Nintendo just released an additional game on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 app. Let’s have a look at it!
Here’s what I thought:
Nintendo 64 App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Killer Instinct Gold | Fighting Game | 1-2 Competitive (Local, Online) | B- |
tl;drThis is a solid follow-up to the original Killer Instinct, though its new combo system may take some getting used to. You’ll want to make it a point to go into the options and change the button layout before you start though – the default button assignments on the Nintendo 64 app are absolutely insane. | |||
I am really glad the original Killer Instinct Gold game included button reassignment in the settings menu, because the default button assignments in the Nintendo 64 app are absolutely insane, and until you fix these controls the game is pretty much unplayable.
Once you do, this becomes a pretty good Fighting Game, though it takes some time to get used to its combo system, even if you played the original Killer Instinct. This is pretty much an entirely different game, with many of the returning characters playing completely differently.
Overall, this is a solid addition to the Nintendo 64 app, but it’s also a frustrating reminder that Nintendo Switch Online refuses to let player map button controls natively. Apparently, the version of the Nintendo 64 app that will be on Nintendo Switch 2 will change this, though that raises the question of why we don’t have that option on the Nintendo Switch 1. Frustrating…
tl;dr – The Nintendo 64 app gets one more game this month, Killer Instinct Gold. You need to be sure to remap the controls (the default controls on the Nintendo 64 app are insanely stupid), and even then it will take some time to get used to this game’s combo system, but once you do, this is a pretty good Fighting Game. Definitely a nice addition to the Nintendo 64 App.
