- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Genre: Platformer
Players: 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local)

Review:
One of the initial batch of games to receive free updates on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launched in 2025, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe isn’t exactly a game I would think many people were demanding for a performance update. The original game looks fine on a technical level – it’s clean, with smooth framerates and an overall good performance. It’s problem is that it’s stylistically bland, and style isn’t something a performance update will fix.
Supposedly, this update improves the resolution on Nintendo Switch 2, and… maybe I see it? Honestly, I’m not so sure. The game looks crisp and clean, and I have no complaints about performance… but then, I didn’t have complaints before either.
What I will complain about is something that is still lacking from the game that adding GameShare would have fixed – there’s still no online multiplayer, in a game that places an emphasis on multiplayer. What a disappointment.
So there you go. Not sure that this update really adds anything profound. But it looks good (on a technical level, in any case).
tl;dr – New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port of a family-friendly 2012 Wii U Platformer, along with its standalone sequel. This game is absurdly overpriced and horribly unoriginal, and many players will be better off getting Super Mario Maker 2. Having said that, there’s no denying that the gameplay here is still excellent, and the presentation is absolutely polished. If you’re a fan of Platformers or just looking for a simple, straightforward Mario game, you should be more than satisfied with this game.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Review:
One of the initial batch of games to receive free updates on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launched in 2025, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was an unexpected delight when it released, not only giving us a marvelous new take on Super Mario 3D World, but gifting us the entirely new Bowser’s Fury, Mario’s first stab at something vaguely resembling Open-World, albeit on a small scale. However, this new addition did have its limits, with a lower resolution and occasional framerate drops.
Well, all of that is in the past with this patch on Nintendo Switch 2, which improves both the framerate and resolution, addressing the one lacking part of the presentation. What’s more, Bowser’s Fury also gets HDR lighting, which… why only Bowser’s Fury?
This update also adds GameShare for both games’ multiplayer components, letting you invite friends to join you locally or online in either game. While I’m not sure how much this is going to be appreciated in Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario 3D World is very much multiplayer-focused, so I suspect it will get good use there.
Overall, this is a solid update that adds yet even more reasons to play this great pair of games!
tl;dr – Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers – an upscaled and much-improved port of Super Mario 3D World, and the all-new Open-World game Bowser’s Fury. On their own, each wouldn’t hold a candle to Mario’s best adventures – 3D World isn’t nearly as ambitious as Odyssey or Galaxy, and Bowser’s Fury is too short. However, combined they come very close to that same level of quality, and the resulting package is a must-have for Mario fans.

One of the initial batch of games to receive free updates on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launched in 2025, Super Mario Odyssey is a game that doesn’t feel like it needs any sort of update. It looks great, it plays great… how do you improve on perfection?
Well, if you’re Nintendo, you improve the resolution and add HDR support. And this game looks great on Nintendo Switch 2! Though… well, it looked great before too. This update does add one other thing – GameShare support for the game’s “2-player” mode. A mode that’s so pointless I don’t even include it when listing the number of players the game supports. Yes, now using GameShare, you can get another player to… control Cappy, one of the moves in Mario’s move set. Thank… you?
In short, I’m not convinced that this update is especially noteworthy. But I suppose even an improvement that’s imperceptible to me is still an improvement, and I can’t complain about free. So Super Mario Odyssey was an absolute must-play before, and it still is. I’m definitely not complaining about that.
tl;dr – Super Mario Odyssey is Mario’s long-awaited return to 3D platforming, and it’s just about everything fans of the series could want. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it has damn near perfected it, filling the game with new surprises around every corner. It is an absolute must-have game on the Nintendo Switch

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Genre: 3D Puzzle-Platformer
Players: 1-2 Co-Op (Local), GameShare (Local Wireless / Online)

Review:
One of the initial batch of games to receive free updates on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launched in 2025, Captain Toad isn’t exactly the first game to mind when you think of games that really need a Nintendo Switch 2 update… but apparently Nintendo feels differently.
This update improves the game’s resolutions and adds HDR support, which updates a game that already looks quite nice. However, I think the real value added here is the other upgrade – GameShare support for 2-player co-op play through the entire game’s campaign. While this game’s 2-player support seems a bit tacked-on, it is nevertheless wonderful that you can now share the experience of the game from start to finish with a friend who doesn’t even own the game.
All in all, this is a solid update to a very good game, or at least a solid update for something that costs nothing extra to get, as long as you own the game and a Nintendo Switch 2.
tl;dr – Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a game where players guide the titular non-jumping character through numerous levels that are each like little puzzle boxes. The puzzles are clever, and the presentation is solid, and this is overall a fantastic puzzle game, although it’s not without a few annoyances.
