Rush Hour Deluxe – The Ultimate Traffic Jam Game!, from here on simply referred to as Rush Hour Deluxe, is a digital version of a classic Puzzle Game originally created as a physical toy in the 1970s. This version of the game was released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in 2022.
The presentation here is pretty good, with 2D visuals that replicate the look of the physical puzzle, backed by relaxing music that works well for this sort of contemplative game.
For those unfamiliar with this style of puzzle, the basic idea is that vehicles are arranged on a six-by-six grid, and each vehicle can only slide on one axis – either vertically or horizontally. By sliding these vehicles back and forth, players must make a path for the red car to move all the way to the right side of the grid, where it can exit.
This release is a decent version of this classic game, and though it doesn’t really do anything extraordinary with the classic formula, what’s here works fine. What doesn’t work is the price – At $20, this is absurdly high, especially since countless other games have copied this style of puzzle for far less. What’s more, if I wanted to get the actual physical puzzle, I could get one for well under this price.
As a result, it’s hard for me to recommend Rush Hour Deluxe. Yes, this is a decent enough take on the classic Puzzle game, but the asking price is far too high. Perhaps this might be worth it when the game goes on sale, but definitely don’t buy it at full price.
tl;dr – Rush Hour Deluxe is a videogame version of the classic Puzzle Game that has players sliding vehicles around a grid to try to make room for a red car to exit. While the game itself is fine, the $20 price tag is absurd, and I cannot recommend it for that price, especially when you have numerous other less-expensive ways to play this game.
