Review:
Perils of Baking is a Platformer released in 2018 on PlayStation 4, then ported to Nintendo Switch in 2019, with a remake of the game releasing in 2022. This game follows the adventure of a heroic baker out to stop his brother, whose quest to become the better baker has led him to a cursed baker’s hat that has started turning baked treats into monsters.
The presentation in this game makes use of some nostalgic 2D pixel art visuals that look like they’re from an early Windows game, with a primitive chiptune soundtrack that is absolutely terrible, and you’ll want to mute the game soon after starting.
As for the gameplay itself, this is okay, but with jerky overly-precise movement and nothing especially interesting to set it apart. The level design isn’t especially engaging, and the game mechanics are dull. It’s not so bad that this becomes a terrible game, but it is a pretty mediocre one.
Unless you are absolutely enchanted by this game’s baking theme, I recommend you skip Perils of Baking. It does nothing truly exceptional, and there are plenty of other better Platformers on the Nintendo Switch more deserving of your time and money.
tl;dr – Perils of Baking is a Platformer with a cute concept where your enemies are all based on confectionary treats, but that is is pretty much the only thing this game has going for it. Beyond that, this game is painfully mediocre, and there are countless other Platformers on Nintendo Switch you’re better off playing instead of this.
