Sushi Time! is an Arcade-style game released on Nintendo Switch in 2019. Like many so-called “restaurant tycoon” games, this isn’t actually about managing a business, but instead purely an Arcade-style experience where you take the role of a sushi chef trying to prep and food for customers order in a timely manner, with this game focused on, naturally, sushi.

The presentation here is okay, featuring cartoony 2D visuals backed by Asian-themed music that’s pretty repetitive yet surprisingly catchy. Unfortunately, while some parts of the presentation are good, the game’s interface absolutely reeks of mobile game design. Overall, this game doesn’t look bad, but it definitely isn’t great.

As for the gameplay, this is pretty much what I think most players have come to expect from these “restaurant tycoon” games, which basically just have you following instructions and multitasking multiple things at once to try to complete orders in a timely manner. I do think Sushi Time has one thing that makes it better than average for this sort of game though, and that is the sushi boats.

When you make sushi in this game, it automatically goes to one of the rotating sushi boats moving across the middle of the screen, provided there’s one with an empty spot. This gives players an extra tool for time management, letting them prep sushi to add to boats in anticipation of what future customers might want. However, players will have to be careful with this, since filling up all the sushi boats will prevent them from adding further sushi to serve customers.

Beyond this nice mechanic, there’s not too much to talk about here – the game doesn’t have a ton of variety, and there’s no multiplayer either. However, at only $5 it’s easy to forgive these limitations.

Overall, I think Sushi Time! is a solid addition to the “restaurant tycoon”-style Arcade games, even if it’s a bit simple and lacking in variety and features. The core gameplay is good, and the sushi boat mechanic is a nice added touch. If you’re looking for a light Arcade-style game and particularly if you enjoy sushi, this game may be worth a look.

tl;dr – Sushi Time! is an Arcade-style game that has players taking orders and prepping food before customers lose patience. This is mostly a pretty typical “restaurant tycoon”-style game (without Simulation elements) though it does have a nice sushi boat mechanic that adds a layer of strategy and planning to the gameplay. It doesn’t have much in the way of variety or options, but it’s still worth a look due to its enjoyable gameplay and low $5 price point.
