Nintendo just released another game on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ app. Let’s have a look at them!

Here’s what I thought of it:

Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ App

GameGenre# of PlayersScore
Forsaken 64First-Person Shooter / Combat Flight Simulator1-4 Competitive (Local Split-Screen / Online Split-Screen)C+
tl;drYou really need to take some time to re-assign button assignments in the controls to get this to be decently playable, but once you do it’s a pretty decent First-Person Shooter in the vein of games like Descent, where you move around freely in 3-dimensional space. Unfortunately, this means that it is very easy to get disoriented and lost in the game’s repetitive, mazelike environments. However, this is still an enjoyable entry in the genre, and one that’s fairly unique, not only in the Nintendo 64’s game library, but the Nintendo Switch’s game library as well.

Forsaken already has a remastered port on Nintendo Switch for those looking for something that has had a lot more polish to bring it closer to modern standards, but even this version of the game has aged fairly well in many respects. Plus, it benefits from not having many other games quite like it, with Descent-style free-roaming First-Person Shooter gameplay not being all that common in 2025.

While the controls have aged better than most Nintendo 64 First-Person Shooters, the level design hasn’t, with absurdly claustrophobic, mazelike, repetitive environments seemingly designed to confuse players and make them feel lost far too easily. Add to this fast, gravity-defying 3-dimensional movement, and it is far too easy to get disoriented.

Still, the fact that you can wrangle the controls into something fairly decent by modern standards puts this head and shoulders above most First-Person Shooters on the Nintendo 64 apps. As such, it is absolutely a welcome addition.

tl;dr – The N64 Mature 17+ app gets Forsaken 64, which takes a bit of messing with the controls to get it playable, but once you do it’s pretty decent even by today’s standards, with Descent-style gameplay that’s not at all common on modern platforms. The game still has some issues with its level design among other things, but overall this is a pretty good addition to the N64 Mature 17+ app.
