Nintendo just released three games on the Nintendo Switch Online Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics App. Let’s have a look!
Here’s what I thought of these games:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind | Platformer | 1 | D+ |
tl;drClaws Encounters is the first Bubsy game, and honestly after this start it’s difficult to see how the series ever got a second one. The loose platforming and faster movement speed feels a little reminiscent of Sonic, but the larger characters make it harder to see what’s coming up ahead, and the game is absurdly unforgiving when it comes to taking damage from enemies or even taking a fall from too high. Add in tons of leaps of faith, and this just seems like a very poorly thought-out Platformer. | |||
| Fatal Fury Special | Fighting Game | 1-2 Competitive (Local / Online) | C |
tl;drFatal Fury Special is a Fighting Game that is an iterative sequel to Fatal Fury 2, adding a few gameplay tweaks and almost doubling the playable roster of characters. Again, a huge improvement over prior games in the franchise, though the gameplay is still a bit stiff by today’s standards. I would argue this is only a game for series fans – everyone else is better off going for a more recent game in the franchise, or a more recebt Fighting Game. | |||
| Mario & Wario | Puzzle-Platformer | 1 | B |
tl;drNever before released outside of Japan, this game requires either a USB mouse or a Nintendo Switch 2 with a Joy-Con 2 controller in order to play. This game bears some similarities to the classic game Lemmings, with players interacting with stage objects to help safely get a blind Mario to Luigi safely. It’s a tad fast-paced, and the stages can feel a bit cramped, but overall this is a clever take on the genre that’s fairly unique. Definitely worth a look! | |||
Of the three games added to the SNES app this month, Mario & Wario is the clear stand-out. Not only is this the game’s first time releasing officially outside of Japan, but it’s actually surprisingly good for a game Nintendo deemed unworthy of a Western release, though this was likely due to the game’s requirement of a mouse, which limited its potential audience. Likewise, if you want to play it on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, you’ll either need a USB mouse plugged into your console, or you’ll need to have a Joy-Con 2 controller.
When it comes to the other two games, Fatal Fury Special may be of interest to fans of SNK Fighting games, but I feel like this game aged pretty poorly when compared to the Street Fighter franchise it was competing against in its day. However, Bubsy aged far worse, with unforgiving gameplay mechanics, loose controls, and far too many leaps of faith.
Still, even if I’m not thrilled with two of this month’s games, getting Mario & Wario is huge, and an unexpected benefit of the Super Nintendo app’s new support of mouse controls.
tl;dr – The SNES app gets three games this month, Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, Fatal Fury Special, and Mario & Wario. The first two of these games have aged poorly, but Mario & Wario is a true delight, with this being the game’s first official release in the West. You need either a USB mouse or a Joy-Con 2 controller to play it, but it’s worth it for this unique and clever Puzzle-Platformer. Thanks to this one game, I’d say this was a good month for the SNES app!
