Review:
Zombiewood, released in 2012 on mobile devices and ported in 2024 to Nintendo Switch, is a 2-Stick Shooter where players take the role of a newly-hired stuntman tasked with blasting away real zombies on film sets improvised during a zombie outbreak. yes, despite the deadly disaster, opportunists are still looking to make a buck off of the disaster, in a way that doesn’t at all resemble real-life opportunist’s response to a deadly outbreak…
Anyway, in the game’s missions you’ll be tasked with various goals. Sometimes you’ll be trying to take out targets, sometimes you’ll be protecting something or someone the zombies are trying to destroy, and sometimes you’ll just be trying to survive while increasingly getting swarmed by zombies. As you progress, you’ll unlock upgrades and additional weapons to equip, giving this game a good sense of progression.
Despite this, Zombiewood’s levels can get a bit repetitive at times, and the progression can actually work against the game since earlier levels may have goals requiring an item you won’t unlock until later, forcing you to replay the level if you want to complete all goals. Also, enemies can be bullet sponges at times. Also, the smaller size and duration of the levels make this work well enough in brief spurts, but less-satisfying for longer play sessions. These issues aren’t so much that they keep this game from being fun, but they’re still worth noting.
The presentation here is pretty good overall, with colorful, stylized 3D characters and environments looking like squished caricatures of people, backed by a surf rock-esque soundtrack. It’s enough to give this game a distinct look and feel, though nothing here is outright impressive.
Overall, I think Zombiewood is a decent if unspectacular 2-Stick Shooter, and one that might be worth picking up if you’re looking for something to kill time between more substantial releases.
tl;dr – Zombiewood is a 2-Stick Shooter where players take the role of a stuntman blasting away zombies. It’s a bit shallow and repetitive, but it’s enjoyable enough to be a decent time-waster, with a distinct style.
