WARNING: THIS GAME HEAVILY PUSHES MICROTRANSACTIONS

Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra, released in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, is a free-to-play game that brings the popular Dragon Ball franchise to the MOBA genre, letting players take the role of Goku, Vegeta, or various other characters from the anime and head out with their team to conquer the standard three lanes to win the match.

While this does put a Dragon Ball flair on the genre, it doesn’t do anything too out of the norm for the genre. You’ll still be “jungling” by fighting computer-controlled enemies, though these now litter the paths rather that being spread among the areas between. Battles have a more visceral feel to them than many MOBAs, with KOed players getting a brief cutscene of them being sent flying by the enemy’s attack. And the game’s characters have a pretty wide array of attacks compared to many other games in the genre.

However, Gekishin Squadra has its flaws as well. Its menu screen is unnecessarily confusing, information in battle isn’t displayed very clearly, and the ability to power-up your characters with currency that can be purchased with real-world money adds a gross pay-to-win elements to the gameplay.

The presentation is overall strong, using cel-shaded 3D visuals that do a good job copying the style of the anime, though not quite as well as Dragon Ball FighterZ. This is joined by energetic music and voice clips for all the characters in battle, though in tutorial scenes some characters are limited to text-only speech.

Overall, I do think this is a successful pairing of the MOBA genre and the Dragon Ball franchise, but it lacks the polish it needed to make it a great one. If you’re a fan of the MOBA genre and/or the Dragon Ball franchise, you might want to give this a look. However, I would argue that fans of one or the other have better options for entry points into the other side of that equation.

tl;dr – Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra is a free-to-play MOBA featuring characters from the Dragon Ball franchise, and it’s mostly a good pairing, though unfortunately both inside and outside of battle information is displayed in a confusing manner. However, fans of both the genre and the franchise should find this to be worth a look.

Grade: C+
