Review:

Discounty, released in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, is an Action-RPG and Management Simulation that has players managing a grocery store in a small town, with gameplay that feels a bit like a midpoint between Stardew Valley and Moonlighter.

Players take the role of a youth invited from out of town by an aunt to help run her business, a sort of story setup that’s textbook for the “Farm RPG” style of game exemplified by Stardew Valley. However, in this case that business is a grocery store, where you’ll be expected to stock product, man registers, purchase new stock, clean up, and handle promotion.

Players will have the freedom to arrange their store as they please, with players gradually getting additional stock as well as items to place to attract attention and encourage sales. When ringing up customers you’ll actually be required to do the math yourself, something that wasn’t required in similar shopkeeping games like Moonlighter. Having to do these calculations in real-time provides a fun and thematically-appropriate challenge, though players who have a disdain for math may feel quite the opposite.

In addition to looking after the shop during the work hours of the in-game clock, you’ll also be running around the town and doing tasks for the townsfolk, ranging from collecting or delivering items, or putting specific items for sale in your shop. These sorts of quests are often tied to progression, and can open up new options in your shop.

There’s a fun gameplay loop here, going back and forth between shopkeeping during the day and interacting with the rest of the town in mornings and evenings. However, I think that Discounty lacks the variety of activities available in Stardew Valley, and it lacks the combat and Roguelike elements on Moonlighter, as well as lacking the ability to set your own prices that Moonlighter offered.

When it comes to the presentation, Discounty uses some colorful pixel art visuals with cute cartoony character designs. This is backed by an excellent synthesized soundtrack that fits well with Discounty’s “cozy game” vibe, with nice tracks like Serve With a Smile, Place the Item in the Bagging Area, Do You Work Here, Blomkest’s Business, Derek’s Lament, and Ragged Forest.

Overall, I think Discounty does an excellent job providing players with a solid shopkeeper Management Simulation and Action-RPG, without doing much to truly shake up the genre. If you’re already a fan of this style of game, I think it’s a safe bet that you’ll find this game very much to your liking, though it probably won’t become your new favorite in the genre. And for newcomers to this style of game, I think this is a solid choice, though it lacks some elements you’ll find in other games in this genre.

tl;dr – Discounty is an Action-RPG and Management Simulation that has players managing their own grocery store while assisting townsfolk with various tasks. This is a good entry in this corner of the “cozy game” space, though it doesn’t do anything too out of the norm for the genre. Still, if you’re a fan of this style of game, I think Discounty is a no-brainer for you.
