Nintendo just released two additional games on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 app. Let’s have a look!
Here’s what I thought:
Nintendo 64 App
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rayman 2: The Great Escape | 3D Platformer | 1 | B- |
tl;drIn many respects, Rayman’s first 3D Platformer has aged remarkably well. The gameplay is still fun, the graphics still look visually-interesting, and the level design is quite distinct from what other contemporary games like Mario and Banjo-Kazooie had to offer. However, nasty camera issues and some pacing problems still hinder the game. Despite this, it’s still well worth playing. | |||
| Tonic Trouble | 3D Platformer | 1 | C |
tl;drThis game feels like it was constructed from leftover parts of Rayman 2. It feels unpolished, lacks much of Rayman’s charm, and suffers from even worse camera issues. You may be able to find some enjoyment here, but there hardly seems any point when you could instead be playing Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, or Rayman 2. | |||
The theme this month is UbiSoft 3D Platformers, and the clear winner here is Rayman 2. For a while, this was the game that was ported to just about every platform in existence, yet in 2025 it’s been a while since we’ve seen its return and it’s a welcome addition to the Nintendo 64 app, despite problems with the game’s camera and pacing.
This is less true for the other game, Tonic Trouble. You can tell that some of the same people worked on both Rayman 2 and this game, but where Rayman’s more silly and absurd elements were balanced by charm, here it just becomes tiresome. And the gameplay and level design seems slapped-together next to Rayman, with collision detection issues, nonsensical level design, and gameplay that just isn’t as enjoyable as what other contemporaries had to offer. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it outright bad, but it’s clear why this game never caught on like numerous other 3D Platformers of the era did.
Still, if only for the addition of Rayman 2 to the Nintendo 64 game library, I’d still say this was a good month for the N64 app!
tl;dr – The Nintendo 64 app gets two more games this month, Rayman 2 and Tonic Trouble. Rayman 2 has camera control issues and pacing problems but is otherwise still a delightful 3D Platformer to this day. Meanwhile, Tonic Trouble feels kludged together from Rayman 2’s leftover parts and is far less successful. Still, Rayman 2’s addition to the N64 app makes this a good update.
