Review:

Mech Wars, not to be confused with the mobile game by the same name, is a First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter released in 2024 on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch where players pilot a mech on missions in enemy territory.

The presentation is a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s not a very good mix either. You’ll start with a dull intro where a bunch of proper nouns tossed into a blender with the most generic sci-fi plot about some conflict that we’re not given any reason to care about before loading into a level. There, we’ll see some decent 3D environments, textures, and lighting. We will also see odd debris floating in mid-air that clips right into the ground for some reason. More importantly, there’s also a framerate that is surely in the single digits. Yeah, this game is outright painful to play, with everything running like a slide show.

It’s not just visually-painful though. The game also suffers from some absolutely nasty input lag, making your machine in-game respond in a terribly sluggish fashion. This might be something you could brush off as a part of the “simulation” of piloting a mech, but your controls are very limited here, and you don’t even have basic things like a full area map, so it definitely doesn’t come across as if it’s trying to be any sort of simulation.

The combat is simple, with little more than shooting enemies when they come on-screen and trying to dodge by moving. There’s not much in the way of music but you’ll have constant annoying beeping that I’m sure corresponds to something happening but it’s unclear what.

Look, I absolutely hated Mech Wars. The only reason I’m not giving it the worst possible grade is that the graphics appear to have had some effort put into them, even if that effort is absolutely destroyed by the horrendous framerates. But trust me when I say, this is not a game worth playing, if you can even consider this playable.

tl;dr – Mech Wars is a First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter that has you piloting a mech against various enemies, and it is an absolute disaster. Painful slide show framerates, sluggish controls, simple gameplay, and constant annoying beeping sounds. Don’t subject yourself to this awful, awful game.

Grade: D-
