Review:

Retro Drive is an Arcade-style Racing game released on mobile devices in 2020, ported to PC in 2024 in a new “Revamped” release, with this release ported to Nintendo Switch in 2025. This game has players racing through various levels while dodging obstacles.

The presentation here is fantastic. This game uses fairly simple 3D visuals, but with a retro-futuristic neon aesthetic that looks great, and this is paired with a soundtrack with some really catchy techno-style tunes.

Unfortunately, this excellent presentation isn’t joined by excellent gameplay. While the gameplay here is extremely simple, it’s also outright intolerable thinks to some absolutely horrendous controls. There’s an input lag here that feels like it must be a full second long, and even when your car turns, it struggles to turn very quickly.

Given how challenging this game’s obstacle courses are right from the start, this makes the game unreasonably difficult. You can improve things somewhat by unlocking additional vehicles, but doing so takes quite a while, and I doubt you’ll have the patience to play through this terrible game long enough to do so.

In short, don’t bother with Retro Drive. It may look and sound great, but the control is so terrible you’ll find yourself hating it very quickly. There are countless better Arcade-style Racing games on Nintendo Switch, play one of those instead.

tl;dr – Retro Drive is an Arcade-style Racing game with a wonderful neon aesthetic, a great techno soundtrack, and absolutely horrible controls that make this game excruciating to play. Don’t waste your time or money on this.

Grade: D+
