Review:

Way back when eShopperReviews was nothing more than posts on another website, one of my earliest reviews was the Nintendo Switch release of Don’t Die, Mr Robot DX. This was an early unexpected surprise for me – the game’s presentation did not seem at all enticing to me, and my expectations were low, yet this game presented some really compelling gameplay and a lot of charm.

Now, over a half a decade later, we’ve gotten the release of a fully-fledged sequel, 3D Don’t Die Mr. Robot, which released in 2024 on PC and was ported in 2025 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. However, the premise remains much the same, being an “Avoid-‘Em-Up” where players don’t attack directly, but must instead set off chain reactions of explosive fruit to destroy enemies.

The major advertised change here is the presentation, which now uses 3D cel shaded visuals. While this removes the unimpressive “clip art” look of the original game, I feel like it also loses some of that game’s simple charm, and in fact on Nintendo Switch large explosion chains now cause brief moments of slowdown, which isn’t great. However, one upgrade I wholeheartedly approve of here is the excellent techno-style soundtrack, which often has the stage jumping in time with the music and really elevates the game. Some good examples of the game’s catchy tracks are Don’t Die, Mr. Robot!, Neon Dunjun, Black Cherry, Arcade Mode, Banana Fritter, Acid Drops, Remix Select, Hold Up, Eights, and Golden Delicious.

In addition to the reworked presentation, 3D Don’t Die Mr. Robot also adds multiple different game modes to mix up the gameplay, with different goals ranging from collecting fruit, destroying enemies, or simply living as long as possible. The different game modes do help to add variety here, but at its core this is still the same simple but thoroughly compelling gameplay that was in the original game.

Do I have complaints? Well, I think that the laser enemy type should forecast its attack a bit more before attacking, but overall I feel like my biggest complaint is that this game could have expanded upon its core premise even more, adding in Roguelike elements or actually making use of the 3D visuals for some sort of gameplay element that wasn’t still strictly 2D.

Still, despite the missed opportunity here, 3D Don’t Die Mr. Robot is still an absolute blast of a family-friendly Arcade-style game that builds on the original game’s formula with more game modes and an excellent soundtrack. And while I feel like there’s even more room for this franchise to expand, I think players craving a great Arcade-style experience with a strong “just one more run” quality to it would do well to give this one a try.

tl;dr – 3D Don’t Die, Mr. Robot! is a family-friendly Arcade-style “Avoid-Em-Up” where players evade enemies and take them out indirectly by collecting fruit for chain reaction explosions. This game takes the gameplay of the original game and expands on it with an updated audiovisual presentation and multiple game modes, making for a delightful Arcade-style experience that pushes you to keep coming back for one more run. Definitely worth a look!
