Review:

Couple Maker is a Puzzle game released in 2025 on PC and Nintendo Switch. This game was a free release on PC, but on Nintendo Switch, players will have to spend $1.30 to get it, though in exchange they’ll get an extra 40 stages, for a total of 116. The premise here is that players are trying to guide characters to each other, combining red-colored and blue-colored characters to meet each other.

What this works out to is placing tiles down on a board instructing characters which direction to walk, starting with simple arrows but over time becoming more involved, with rotating arrows that spin characters around, portals that warp them from one spot to another, and switches that change the direction of arrows. There’s surprisingly a lot of creativity here for a game that’s so inexpensive.

The presentation is decent but nothing special, with a background depicting an anime-style woman who is supposedly writing out the romances we’re puzzling out here, and with the actual moving characters depicted in a more simple chibi-esque style, with everything using light, pastel colors, and all of this backed by a lighthearted piano theme. It’s all generally pleasant but unimpressive.

When it comes to complaints, I don’t have much to complain about here. It’s frustrating that the game often doesn’t tell you what new tiles do, but that also means that you’re challenged to try to figure it out on your own. And while the game does let you change in the options what sort of couples the game pairs up (male-female, female-female, male-male, anyone-anyone), the characters are so abstract that you often can’t tell what their intended gender is, and the game itself misgenders them in the flavor text anyway.

Honestly, when it comes to inexpensive Puzzle games, Couple Maker is a steal of a game. Despite the price tag under $2, there’s a good amount of content here, a cute concept, and some really clever gameplay that adds various clever ideas to that core concept. If you’re looking for a lighthearted Puzzle game for your Nintendo Switch but don’t have much to spend, Couple Maker is a fantastic choice.

tl;dr – Couple Maker is a Puzzle game that has players placing tiles to guide characters with the goal of forming color-coded meetings of those characters. It’s lighthearted but with a lot of creativity that went into its puzzle mechanics, and for under $2 there’s a surprising amount of content here. This is a great choice for players looking to add something inexpensive to their Puzzle game library.
