Sheepy is a Platformer released in 2024 on PC and ported in 2025 to Nintendo Switch. Set in a mysterious underground facility ruined by some unknown calamity, players take the role of a stuffed animal sheep that has been animated by some sort of mysterious energy or spirit, who ventures into the facility searching for… something.
Okay, so this game’s plot is really vague. It’s not exactly clear what happened in this place, who or what you are, or what you want. That said, Sheepy is absolutely filled with amazing worldbuilding. The ruined facility clearly had a purpose and a history, and it’s filled with the aging remains of the various people who didn’t manage to escape before… whatever happened here. You’ll come across their notes strewn about the place, encounter signs instructing or warning people, hear voiced announcements whose recordings are deteriorating due to time.
The rest of the presentation is similarly impressive. The 2D pixel art visuals are nicely-detailed and wonderfully-animated, with some nice lighting and some outstanding details in the backgrounds. What’s more, this is joined by some great environmental sounds that emphasize the quiet loneliness and vague sense of danger in the place you’re exploring, an excellent orchestral soundtrack that accentuates this game’s dramatic moments, with quiet somber themes while exploring the ruins, tense and fast-paced themes for dangerous encounters, and invigorating themes for moments of triumph, with highlights including Come Alive, Again, The First Exploration, A Journey’s Pace, Enter Over, Fluorescent North, The Violet Pike, and The Gateway Assembly.
The gameplay in Sheepy is simple, but what’s here is done well. At the start of the game, you don’t have anything other than the ability to jump and cling onto platform edges, though as you progress you gain additional abilities. Moving around and jumping feels good, though movement is a tad slower than I’d like. The level design is good, and although it’s mostly linear, there is a bit of exploration to hunt down secrets. There mostly aren’t enemies here, but the game does have occasional boss battles. However there’s not really combat in these boss battles – you’ll mostly get through these boss battles by dodging.
I’m sorry if I’m not being very specific about things, but it’s hard to do so without spoiling the game, since Sheepy can be easily completed in under an hour. Yes, the “Short Adventure” in the title is accurate. And in a way, this short play time is the game’s biggest flaw – not because it feels like there should be more here for the game’s low $2 price tag. Quite the contrary, this game could have easily sold at $5 and still been a bargain.
No, the short play time is a problem just because what’s here is so very good and I wanted more of it. More of the excellent atmosphere, more of the solid Platforming and strong level design, more of the great soundtrack and nice visuals, more of the fascinating world. I would have gladly paid ten times this game’s price tag for a game like this that was five times as long.
Sheepy is free to download on Steam, and I can only assume that the $2 price on Nintendo Switch is just to cover the cost of porting the game over, but honestly even at $2 for one hour of play time, this is an insanely good deal because of just how high-quality Sheepy is all-around. If you play on PC, you should already be downloading this game right now. And if you prefer to game on Nintendo Switch, I can say that your $2 will be well-spent here. I can only hope that this is followed up with a bigger, longer sequel at some point in the future
tl;dr – Sheepy is a Platformer where players take the role of an animated stuffed sheep doll exploring a ruined facility. The visuals, sound design, soundtrack, and worldbuilding are all superb here, and while the platforming gameplay doesn’t do anything revolutionary, it’s still well-made and enjoyable. The biggest flaw I can point to is that it’s all over in under an hour, and I want much more than that. Still, for only $2 this is an absolute steal, and I highly recommend it.
