Review:

Dunjungle is an Action-Platformer and Roguelike released in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. In this game, players take the role of a monkey hero chasing after a dark and corrupting figure who is turning friendly creatures in your forest hostile.

The presentation here uses reasonably detailed 2D pixel art visuals with some good animation and backed by a synthesized soundtrack that includes some expected tribal influences but has some good variety to it too. Nothing here is extraordinary, but everything is solid and gives the game a good overall personality.

Dunjungle doesn’t really do anything to dramatically shake up its respective genres, but it does manage to do just about everything it tries very well. Movement and platforming is smooth and fluid, combat is satisfying, there’s a good variety of Roguelike upgrades that make each run through the game play differently and provide some good synergies when you luck into solid combinations. Plus, you have plenty of different ways to upgrade, including some that have excellent risk/reward tradeoffs.

If I had to point to complaints, I’d start by pointing out that the boss fights present a massive difficulty spike. Also, I think your primary and secondary weapon slots fill up quickly, and the game does little to make it worth your while to trade these out after you acquire them, especially after upgrading. This means that during the rest of your run encountering these weapons will fail to excite you at all – new passive upgrades (and permanent “Roguelite” upgrades) are going to be your main draw here.

However, overall these are relatively minor complaints, and Dunjungle is a fantastic entry in both Action-Platformer and Roguelike genres, and if you enjoy these genres I think this is absolutely a game you’ll want to get your hands on.

tl;dr – Dunjungle is a mix of Action-Platformer and Roguelike where players take the role of a monkey hero fighting off corrupted jungle creatures trying to take the jungle back from a mysterious threat. This game doesn’t do anything to dramatically change or innovate in the genre, but almost everything it does, it does well. If you enjoy a good action-packed Roguelike, you’ll definitely want to give this one a try.

Grade: B+
