eShopper Reviews 1000th Review Celebration: Nintendo Switch Top 10 Lists! (2020 Edition)

In addition to the Top 100 Games List, I wanted to do something a little extra, and highlight some of the games that truly excelled in one area of the other for me personally in my time reviewing games on the Nintendo Switch. As such, I’ve put together some “Top 10” lists for you to look over. As with the Top 100 list, my opinion on these may change over time, but here’s what I think as of right now. Please have a look!

.

Top 10 Most-Played Games

I tend to enjoy playing games with repetitive actions like Picross to relax, so that might help to explain why the numbers for Pic-a-Pix Deluxe are so high. I should also note that if I included the hours spent on these games on other platforms, the numbers for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be much higher, and everything on this list would be absolutely dwarfed by my numbers for Skyrim, Minecraft, the Borderlands games, and Disgaea 1.

10. Fitness Boxing – 20 Hours

9. Moonlighter – 25 Hours

8. Super Mario Maker 2 – 30 Hours

7. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 40 Hours

6. Super Mario Odyssey – 55 Hours

5. Slay the Spire – 90 Hours

4. Disgaea 5: Complete – 100 Hours

3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 205 Hours

2. Pic-a-Pix Deluxe – 210 Hours

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 590 Hours

Top 10 Best Surprises

These are the games that most exceeded my expectations. For some of these games, I was expecting absolutely nothing special. For others, I outright expected to hate the game. Heck, in the case of Wandersong I didn’t actually realize how great it was until I had initially brushed it off and dismissed it outright. Yet each of these games was so good that they worked past my initial reservations and proved that they were something truly special.

Top 10 Games I Think You Probably Haven’t Played, But Should

Top 10 Games You Probably Disagree With Me On

You can call this the “Unpopular Opinion Award”. These are the games that I think most people tend to hold in much higher regard than I do. Some of these are games I even like, but most people I hear talking about them speak about them as if even just liking them isn’t enough, and complaints about their flaws are tantamount to Nintendo Switch treason. Well, by all means go ahead and downvote me. I set myself up for it, after all.

10. XCOM 2 Collection

9. Final Fantasy VII

8. Hollow Knight

7. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition

6. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI

Top 10 Games I think Metacritic Got Wrong

Normally I find Metacritic to be a good indication of a game’s quality, but we don’t always see eye to eye. These are games I think deserved much better scores than the average reviewer gave. Listed above are Metacritic’s score and my own grade for the game, with the order being how much I look at the Metacritic score and wonder “what the heck were you guys thinking, scoring it so low!?”.

10. Paladins (Metacritic’s Score: 74; My Grade: A-)

9. Xeodrifter (Metacritic’s Score: 71; My Grade: A-)

1. Asphalt 9 Legends (Metacritic’s Score: 61; My Grade: B+)

Top 10 Best Ports to Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch gets a lot of hand-me-down games from other platforms, but often this is a great thing, as it gives developers a chance to actually improve on what the original game had to offer, or bring to Nintendo’s less-powerful hardware a game that many would feel couldn’t be done on the Switch. Here are the games I feel took the most of that opportunity.

Top 10 Previously-released games I would like to see ported to the Nintendo Switch

Everyone has their wishlist of Switch ports, and here’s mine. I’ll refrain from including games published by Microsoft and Sony to keep this list somewhat more realistic (yes, I know, Microsoft still allowed Minecraft, Cuphead, and the Ori games on Switch, but let’s not assume that means Halo is coming too). I’m also restricting this to games I actually think would run well on the Nintendo Switch.

10. Xenoblade Chronicles X

9. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

8. Metroid: Samus Returns

7. Plants Vs. Zombies
