Nintendo Switch 2 Reviews: Simulation

Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in each genre, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.

Simulation (Management / God Simulations)

GameGenreGrade
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionManagement SimA+
tl;dr Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a light-hearted, family-friendly, casual Management Sim where the time and date in the game is the same as in real life, and where players perform small tasks and customize their home and their village. This entry is a huge step forward for the series, adding many new mechanics and gameplay systems that greatly improve the game’s customization elements while giving added quality of life enhancements as well. There constantly seems like something new and fun to do, with new surprises seemingly every day, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds improved resolution and greatly-improved loading times along with a few other more minor updates. Unless you have a problem with more relaxed, slower-paced games, you should consider this game a must-have.
Ball x PitArcade / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike / SimulationA-
tl;dr Ball x Pit is a game that blends a wide variety of disparate genres, such as 2-Stick Shooter, Arcade, Roguelike, and Management Simulation, resulting in something that is wildly unique, offering a lot of depth, yet still highly-accessible and easy to pick up. Consider this a must-have if you’re craving originality, and something still worth checking out even if you just like some of the genres I named.
Dave the Diver – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionAction-RPG / Arcade / Management SimulationB
tl;dr Dave the Diver combines Action-RPG sections where players dive into the sea to catch various fish, and Arcade-style Restaurant sections with some Management Simulation elements when you’re serving up those fish to clamoring customers. The gameplay in both sections is good, and both work well together, but each has some flaws that hamper the enjoyment, and the game overall has problems with frequent loading screens and pacing-stopping character conversations. This is still a fun and original game, but these small annoyances do gradually add up.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionOpen-World Action-RPG / Management SimulationB
tl;dr Fantasy Life i is an Action-RPG and follow-up to the Nintendo 3DS original game. This game is burdened with numerous issues, with the first 4-5 hours or so being pretty terrible. However, players who stick with it will find that this is a game that has massive depth, a ton of variety, and plenty of things to see and do. And thankfully, the Nintendo Switch 2 version fixes the performance issues of the Nintendo Switch version, and for only $3, making this a pretty good deal. As long as you have the patience to get through the lousy opening hours, this is worth a look.
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionAction-RPG / Management SimulationB
tl;dr Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is an Action-RPG and “Farming RPG” Management Simulation that brings the long-running series in a new direction with a traditional Japanese-inspired aesthetic, and evolves both the combat and the farming gameplay in mostly-excellent new ways. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game improves the performance and adds mouse mode support to the town building parts of the game, making for a decent but not massive improvement to the game. Overall this is a solid new entry in this series and well worth a look for fans of its respective genres.
Star Trek: Voyager – Across the UnknownManagement SimulationC+
tl;dr Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown is a Management Simulation that has players managing the titular ship as players play through the events of the 1990s TV series. The core Management Simulation elements are enjoyable, but this game does little to take full advantage of its premise, and the presentation is terrible. Fans of the show who enjoy Simulation games may find this amusing, but it’s far from a great take on the genre, or the series for that matter.
