Here’s games in this category that I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch 2, sorted alphabetically by title.

| Game | Genre | Switch Grade | Switch 2 Grade | |||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Management Sim | A+ | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $5 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, greatly improved loading times, higher multiplayer limit, CameraPlay, Megaphone Tool, Dynamic Mouse Mode in some sections. | |||||||||||
tl;drAnimal Crossing: New Horizons is a light-hearted, family-friendly, casual Management Sim where the time and date in the game is the same as in real life, and where players perform small tasks and customize their home and their village. This entry is a huge step forward for the series, adding many new mechanics and gameplay systems that greatly improve the game’s customization elements while giving added quality of life enhancements as well. There constantly seems like something new and fun to do, with new surprises seemingly every day, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds improved resolution and greatly-improved loading times along with a few other more minor updates. Unless you have a problem with more relaxed, slower-paced games, you should consider this game a must-have. | ||||||||||||
| Apex Legends | First-Person Shooter | C+ | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free platform-specific release | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, improved resolution, improved textures, improved character models, greatly-improved framerates, Dynamic Mouse Mode controls. | |||||||||||
tl;drApex Legends is an online-focused free-to-play battle royale-style First Person Shooter where there’s an emphasis on coordinating with your 2- or 3-person team to survive. This is a game with a steep learning curve, so if you haven’t already played the game elsewhere, you’re likely to get killed extremely quickly. That said, the Nintendo Switch 2 release of this game is an absolutely massive improvement over the Nintendo Switch version, with excellent graphics and performance, albeit at a cost of a massive 78.5GB file size. However, if you’re looking for a solid First-Person Shooter that doesn’t have to be a hit to your wallet, this is an excellent choice. | ||||||||||||
| Asphalt Legends | Arcade Racing | B+ | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Some loading times improved, others worse. Worse aliasing. | |||||||||||
tl;drAsphalt 9: Legends is a Free-To-Play Arcade Racer that’s bogged down by all sorts of nasty microtransactions, which is a shame because the game underneath all of that is one of the best racing games on the Switch. I’d argue that the microtransactions can be worked around, and since the game is free to play, you should definitely at least give it a try – on balance, I’d argue that the game is definitely worth the hassle. | ||||||||||||
| ARMS | 3D Fighting Game | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, HDR support, improved framerates in split-screen multiplayer. | |||||||||||
tl;drARMS is a wildly unique 3D Fighting Game that plays like nothing else out there, with players focusing less on skillful moves and more on position and timing as they try to land punches on each other using stretchy arms. It is a surprisingly fun experience, and one that looks great and plays great, including in its 4-Player split-screen mode and in online matches. If you want a great competitive game on your Switch and don’t mind something that’s weird and takes some time getting used to, this is a must-have. | ||||||||||||
| Big Brain Academy: Brain Vs. Brain | Party Game / Minigame Collection | C | C | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: GameShare Support. | |||||||||||
tl;drBig Brain Academy: Brain Vs. Brain is a Minigame Collection and Party game with numerous extremely simple games with a vaguely educational theme. However, the educational value of this game is dubious, and its enjoyment as a game is extremely limited by its simplicity. You may have some fun with this one for a short while, but you’ll get bored with it quickly. | ||||||||||||
| Broforce | Action-Platformer | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Minor improvement to loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drBroforce is an action-platformer that pumps up testosterone-fueled shooting action to parody level, with lots of characters that are amazing parodies of classic action film heroes. It’s just frustrating that you’re never allowed to choose which hero you’re playing as. | ||||||||||||
| Bugsnax | First-Person Puzzle / Misc. | B- | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved loading times, improved framerates. | |||||||||||
tl;drBugsnax is an odd game with various elements I feel I can best describe as a First-Person Puzzle game about an island of muppet-like “grumpus” people who have become enamored with the titular “bugsnax”, critters that look like food and are purportedly delicious. This game is limited by its lack of stuff to do outside its core game structure, as well as issues with accomplishing the goals you’re given. However, it largely makes up for this with its adorable presentation and excellent story. The result is a game that feels like it could have been something much better, but is still worth playing for the stuff it gets right. | ||||||||||||
| Captain Toad Treasure Tracker | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved Resolution, HDR Support, GameShare Support. | |||||||||||
tl;drCaptain Toad Treasure Tracker is a game where players guide the titular non-jumping character through numerous levels that are each like little puzzle boxes. The puzzles are clever, and the presentation is solid, and this is overall a fantastic puzzle game, although it’s not without a few annoyances. | ||||||||||||
| Children of Morta | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved loading times, smoother scrolling. | |||||||||||
tl;drChildren of Morta is a co-op Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays much like Diablo, but instead of loot, the game uses a Roguelike system that has players playing as different members of a family in a way that enhances both the game’s story and its mechanics. While there are areas that could do with improvement, on the whole this is a wonderful Action-RPG and a fantastic co-op experience that fans of the genre should absolutely give a try. | ||||||||||||
| Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics | Compilation / Card Games / Board Games / Sports / Misc. | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: GameShare Support. | |||||||||||
tl;drClubhouse Games is a family-friendly Compilation of 51 various games (plus a piano toy software) ranging from time-honored classic card and board games to simple sports and arcade games. While most of the individual games are pretty feature-poor, there is a massive amount of content here, and most of it plays well and is excellently-presented. There are even a few delightful surprises here as well. Add in good local competitive play and decent online play, and you have a superb game collection well worth owning. | ||||||||||||
| Cooking Mama: Cookstar | Arcade | C- | C- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly-improved gyroscopic motion control. | |||||||||||
tl;drCooking Mama Cookstar is an Arcade-style game that has been surrounded by rumors and controversy, with the game pulled from the eShop shortly after its release. However, the reality of the situation is that this game is neither a hidden masterpiece nor an epic disaster. It’s just a mediocre game that neither meets its series’ potential nor is it an interesting enough train wreck to make for a fun spectacle. It is merely a mediocre but playable game with slow pacing, lackluster controls, and simple, boring gameplay. | ||||||||||||
| Core Keeper – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Top-Down Action-RPG / Survival Adventure | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly-improved loading times, improved framerates, improved lighting and shadow effects, improved water effects, improved particle effects, 8-player online co-op. | |||||||||||
tl;drCore Keeper is an Open-World Top-Down Action-RPG with Survival Adventure elements that has players digging through a vast underground world, exploring and discovering new treasures, mysteries, and dangers. For players who enjoy games like Minecraft and Terraria, this should be considered a must-have, and fans of Action-RPGs in general should give this a look too – its well-crafted and varied gameplay and its wonderful presentation make for something truly special. | ||||||||||||
| Daemon X Machina | Third-Person Action | C+ | C+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drDaemon X Machina is a third-person mech Action game with a striking anime look that controls well and has some good customization elements, but it’s brought down somewhat by its incomprehensible story crowding in on the action, a lock-on feature that could do with improvement, and a slow buildup of its customization features. In the end, this is still a good game, but its flaws stand in the way of it being a much better one. | ||||||||||||
| Dave the Diver – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Action-RPG / Arcade / Management Simulation | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drDave the Diver combines Action-RPG sections where players dive into the sea to catch various fish, and Arcade-style Restaurant sections with some Management Simulation elements when you’re serving up those fish to clamoring customers. The gameplay in both sections is good, and both work well together, but each has some flaws that hamper the enjoyment, and the game overall has problems with frequent loading screens and pacing-stopping character conversations. This is still a fun and original game, but these small annoyances do gradually add up. | ||||||||||||
| Deltarune | Turn-Based RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free download for owners of Nintendo Switch release | Switch 2 Version Differences: Exclusive Mouse Mode bonus room. | |||||||||||
tl;drDeltarune is a Turn-Based RPG (sorta’) that follows in the footsteps of Undertale but does a few things quite differently, yet is in many ways much the same wildly creative, bizarre, funny, thoughtful and original experience that Undertale was. If you enjoyed Undertale, this is a no-brainer, if you didn’t like it then this probably won’t be any different for you, and if you haven’t played Undertale, then play Undertale before playing this. | ||||||||||||
| Descenders | Offroad Bike Racing / Extreme Sports (Offroad Biking) | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, improved resolution, improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drDescenders is an Offroad Bike Racing game with Extreme Sports elements that has players speeding through randomly-generated environments and performing tricks, with gameplay that incorporates Roguelike elements to challenge the player to push themselves without taking too many risks. It’s a fantastic game, and although it’s still not on par with the version released on other platforms, the performance has been massively improved on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to the Nintendo Switch. It’s still far from the best way to play this game, but it’s not quite as wide a gap now as it used to be. | ||||||||||||
| Disney Speedstorm | Kart Racing | B- | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free platform-specific release | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, improved resolution, improved loading times, improved shadows, improved anti-aliasing. | |||||||||||
tl;drDisney Speedstorm is a free-to-play Kart Racing game featuring high-tech races with courses and racers inspired by classic Disney franchises. I have some issues with the microtransactions here, the lack of courses, and the rubber-banding… but despite those numerous flaws, this is still a wonderfully fun, fast-paced racing game with an outstanding presentation (greatly-improved over on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to the original Nintendo Switch) and a great soundtrack. As long as you can tolerate this game’s flaws, I think you’ll find it to be a great addition to your Racing game collection. | ||||||||||||
| Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Top-Down Turn-Based RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, some loading times faster while others are slower, improved resolution. | |||||||||||
tl;drDivinity: Original Sin 2 is a Turn-Based RPG that had to sacrifice couch co-op and a lot of graphical fidelity to fit onto the Switch, but the game retains its massive, deep, well-told campaign, excellent strategic gameplay, absolutely beautiful soundtrack and superb voice acting and writing, and superb co-op play in local wireless and online. Plus, the Switch 2 version has exclusive cross-save support with the PC version on Steam. The result is a version of the game that is one of the best RPGs on the Switch 2, and a must-have for fans of the genre who don’t already own it on another platform. | ||||||||||||
| Donkey Kong Country Returns HD | Platformer | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved loading times, GameShare support. | |||||||||||
tl;drDonkey Kong Country Returns HD is a solid remaster of an excellent Platformer from Wii and Nintendo 3DS (improved further with smoother visuals and better loading times on Nintendo Switch 2), but this release doesn’t add much, and overall does little to justify its $60 price tag, especially when Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is also on Nintendo Switch and an overall superior game. By comparison, this feels a bit like taking a step backwards at this point. | ||||||||||||
| Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze | Platformer | A+ | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is about as good as 2D platformers can get – it plays well, it looks great, and the level design is some of the best that’s ever been seen in a videogame. This is a game that should be in every Nintendo Switch owner’s collection, and every Nintendo Switch 2 owner’s collection too, for that matter. | ||||||||||||
| Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake | Turn-Based JRPG | B- | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly improved loading times, improved framerates or improved resolution (not both). | |||||||||||
tl;drDragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a new version of the classic 1988 Turn-Based JRPG that updates the game with a new HD-2D presentation, along with numerous quality-of-life improvements. The result is a gorgeous and much-improved version of a JRPG with dated gameplay, a dated story, and playable characters with zero personality. If you’re looking to play a polished-up version of a classic JRPG from nearly 40 years ago, this is absolutely the best way to play this fan-favorite entry of one of the genre’s biggest franchises (even better on Nintendo Switch 2). But just be aware that under the shining polish is a game that has not aged very well. | ||||||||||||
| Eggy Party | Arcade / 3D Platformer | F | F | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Literally unplayable. | |||||||||||
tl;drEggy Party is a free-to-play game that is not only a buggy, nearly-unplayable disaster on Nintendo Switch, but it consistently crashes when trying to load up the game on Nintendo Switch 2, making it literally unplayable. Take my advice and stay far away from this utter disaster. | ||||||||||||
| Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes | Turn-Based JRPG | B- | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drEiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a Turn-Based JRPG created to be a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, and as such it features a huge roster of 120 recruitable characters. There’s a lot to like here, with good combat, an interesting story, and a great presentation, but the game suffers from massive pacing issues, far too many characters that seem disconnected from the plot, and some performance issues on Nintendo Switch (much-improved but still present on Nintendo Switch 2). I do think the good outweighs the bad here, but this is definitely a far lesser game than it could have been. | ||||||||||||
| Fall Guys | Arcade / 3D Platformer | B- | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved loading times, smoother menu navigation. | |||||||||||
tl;drFall Guys is a free-to-play online-focused multiplayer game that has players competing in a variety of different competitions with up to 59 other players. While there’s a decent variety in the gameplay, and some fun to be had doing so, the sluggish controls feel limiting. Thankfully, improved framerates, loading times, and menu navigation on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch make a big difference here. The result is a game that, while it has its issues, is still a really enjoyable free-to-play game well worth checking out on Nintendo Switch 2. | ||||||||||||
| Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Action-RPG / Management Simulation | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $2.99 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved resolution, improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drFantasy Life i is an Action-RPG and follow-up to the Nintendo 3DS original game. This game is burdened with numerous issues, with the first 4-5 hours or so being pretty terrible. However, players who stick with it will find that this is a game that has massive depth, a ton of variety, and plenty of things to see and do. And thankfully, the Nintendo Switch 2 version fixes the performance issues of the Nintendo Switch version, and for only $3, making this a pretty good deal. As long as you have the patience to get through the lousy opening hours, this is worth a look. | ||||||||||||
| Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly improved framerates, slightly improved resolution, improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drFinal Fantasy Tactics is a genre-naming game for the “Tactics-style” Turn-Based Strategy RPG genre, and for good reason, it’s outstanding, and it is presented here in the best version we’ve ever gotten of the game, albeit not the definitive version, nor one without its own flaws and frustrations. Still, the original game has aged well, and the new quality-of-life improvements and voiced dialogue makes this game even better. If you enjoy Strategy-RPGs, consider this a must-buy. | ||||||||||||
| Fire Emblem Warriors | Action Brawler | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drFire Emblem Warriors combines the Musou-style action-focused gameplay of games like Hyrule Warriors and Dynasty Warriors with some of the strategic elements of the Fire Emblem franchise, along with tons of (sometimes embarrassing) fan service for that series, resulting in a game that’s delightfully fun, if a bit shallow. Map and menu issues detract from this game a bit, but overall this is a wonderful action-packed romp. | ||||||||||||
| Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes | Action Brawler | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly improved loading times, greatly improved framerates, improved distance animations, improved resolution | |||||||||||
tl;drFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes evolves the first Fire Emblem Warriors’ combination of Musou-style Action Brawler gameplay and strategic elements, pairing it with an excellent alternate story using the world and characters from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The Musou-style gameplay is still somewhat shallow, but overall this is a fun action-packed experience that both Musou fans and Fire Emblem fans will want to get, and its performance is notably improved by the jump from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2. | ||||||||||||
| Fortnite | Open-World Action-RPG | A- | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free platform-specific release | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, greatly improved resolution, reduced pop-in, Mouse Mode support (not dynamic) | |||||||||||
tl;drFortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is a far superior way to play it compared to the original Nintendo Switch. | ||||||||||||
| Game Builder Garage | Content Creation Application | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, Mouse Mode support | |||||||||||
tl;drGame Builder Garage is a Content Creation Application that acts as a “simple” game design tool, though it’s debatable just how “simple” it is. It is extremely limited in multiple ways, and even with an extremely lengthy tutorial it could stand to do better ensuring players understand how to use the tools contained within. Still, for a mere $30 this is a fun application to play around with, albeit not as versatile or user-friendly as some others that have been released elsewhere. | ||||||||||||
| Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Compilation / Open-World Action-RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition may have released in a disastrous state, but thanks to post-launch patches it has since become a decent remaster of a trio of phenomenal games, to the point where I would say the worst issue with this bundle is how dated these games are next to more modern Open-World Action-RPGs like Grand Theft Auto V. Those complaints aside, I would definitely say that this Compilation of legendary games is well worth getting on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. | ||||||||||||
| GRID Autosport | Racing Simulation | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: GameCube controller support, improved framerates in performance mode | |||||||||||
tl;drGRID Autosport is a port of a 2014 Racing Sim that improves the graphics over the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, as well as adding a huge variety of options and different ways to play. This was already a solid Racing Sim before, and the improvements the Nintendo Switch version makes (improved further on Nintendo Switch 2) make this the definitive version – just be sure to play with a GameCube controller. This is an all-around excellent Racing Sim, and currently the best game in the genre on the Switch, a deserving honor even if there’s not much competition for that honor right now. | ||||||||||||
| Hades II | Action / Roguelike | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, improved framerates, improved resolution | |||||||||||
tl;drHades II is an excellent follow-up to its predecessor, a fine Action Roguelike with an absolute ton of content, and that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while changing things enough that this feels like a very different sort of game while still fitting in with the original. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game is a free upgrade if you own the Nintendo Switch version, and the improvements to graphics and performance are absolutely noticeable. If you’re looking to play a truly excellent Action game on the go, this is well worth picking up. | ||||||||||||
| Hollow Knight: Silksong – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Metroidvania | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates (depending on display mode), improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drHollow Knight: Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to the original Hollow Knight, and it is a fine successor, with an absolutely beautiful presentation and a fascinating new world to explore. Unfortunately, it still has many of the problems the first game had, including a punishing difficulty level and frustrating design choices. Still, even with these issues, this is a game not to be missed for any fan in the genre who isn’t opposed to a challenge. | ||||||||||||
| Hogwarts Legacy | Open-World Action-RPG | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch 2 release discounted to $10 for owners of digital version of Nintendo Switch game | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved character models, improved resolution, improved framerates, reduced pop-in, improved distance animations, improved lighting, improved shadows, improved reflections, removal of location transition loading screens, Mouse Mode support (only in menus), HD Rumble 2 Support | |||||||||||
tl;drHogwarts Legacy is an Open-World Action-RPG set in the world of Harry Potter but in the 1800s, and as a result the setting is the same but the characters and conflicts are largely unique. Everything about this game’s approach to telling a story within this franchise is a true delight, but the gameplay features some questionable design choices, and while the Nintendo Switch 2 version is overall superior to the Nintendo Switch version, it still has quite a few flaws. This is still a very playable game, and it’s well worth playing to explore this game’s magnificent setting and story. But there’s no question that this is a highly-compromised experience in numerous ways. | ||||||||||||
| Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition | Action Brawler | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, greatly improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drHyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors-style Action Brawler with a Zelda setting and characters. It looks a bit dated and has a few issues here and there, but it’s an absolute blast to play in co-op… once you look up online how to actually play in co-op. | ||||||||||||
| Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity | Action Brawler | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, greatly improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, like the first Hyrule Warriors game, is a “musou”-style game in the same vein as the Dynasty Wars series. This time, this game ties directly into the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exploring the events that preceded that game in some creative ways. What’s more, the presentation, the visuals and music, the style, and numerous gameplay elements all tie back to Breath of the Wild. On top of that, the split-screen co-op here is absolutely phenomenal. Only a few flaws here (like occasionally repetitive combat) keep this game from true greatness, but even with these flaws this is still an outstanding game that most Switch owners would do well to check out. | ||||||||||||
| Island Saver | First-Person Shooter / Educational | B- | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drIsland Saver is a Family-Friendly Free-to-Play First-Person Shooter that has you using a vacuum gun to suck up litter and spray water to clean up pollution. It has a surprisingly polished presentation, especially given that the game seems nearly free from monetization, and the game’s Educational elements act as a nice (albeit abstract) kid-friendly introduction to environmentalism as well as finance and the economy. Older players may find that the game lacks challenge and is filled with repetitive busywork, but for younger players, this is well worth getting. | ||||||||||||
| Islanders | Management Simulation / Puzzle | A- | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, greatly improved resolution, greatly improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drIslanders is a family-friendly Management Sim-style game with Puzzle elements that has players placing buildings on procedurally-generated islands. This is a game that boils down the Management Sim genre to an elegant simplicity that makes for a truly compelling experience, and one that receives significant performance improvements on Nintendo Switch 2, even without a patch. This is absolutely worth the tiny $5 price tag, even if it could stand to have a little more depth. | ||||||||||||
| Islanders: New Shores | Management Simulation / Puzzle | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, slightly improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drIslanders: New Shores is a Management Simulation and Puzzle game that is a follow-up to the original Islanders, and it takes the gameplay of the original game and adds multiple new elements for deeper gameplay, as well as some welcome new options. It’s hard to say whether this deeper gameplay is superior to the more simple and straightforward original game, but overall this is still a great game and an excellent sequel well worth playing for anyone looking for a relaxing game in this combination of genres. | ||||||||||||
| Katamari Damacy Reroll | Arcade | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drKatamari Damacy Reroll takes the excellent and crazy-inventive PS2 game about rolling up objects into a giant ball, and brings it into the modern day with HD resolution, higher framerates, and not much else. Still, as the best version of a fantastic game, it’s well worth getting. | ||||||||||||
| Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World | 3D Platformer | A+ | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $20 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved distance animation, slightly improved loading times, new Star-Crossed World campaign | |||||||||||
tl;drKirby and the Forgotten Land is a family-friendly 3D Platformer that marks Kirby’s first fully-fledged 3D adventure, and it is an outstanding game that is one of the best titles in the Kirby franchise. While I have a few complaints about the relatively easy difficulty level, overall this game is an absolute blast to play, full of personality and originality, all while drawing inspiration from some of the best Mario and Donkey Kong games, as well as Kirby’s own 2D adventures. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition doubles the framerate and adds a collection of excellent new levels to play through. If you enjoy Platformers, you should absolutely get this game. | ||||||||||||
| L.A. Noire | Graphic Adventure / Open-World Action-RPG | B+ | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, improved resolution, improved framerates. | |||||||||||
tl;drL.A. Noire combines Graphic Adventure and Open-World Action-RPG elements into an ambitious detective game that’s a bit uneven, with the detective stuff and hard-boiled story generally excellent but other parts of the game underbaked. On Nintendo Switch 2, the performance is still far from what you see on other modern platforms, but it’s much better than on the original Nintendo Switch. Overall, this is a superb detective game, and this is a good way to play it on the go. | ||||||||||||
| Little Inferno | Puzzle / Misc. | C- | C | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved motion controls | |||||||||||
tl;drLittle Inferno is an interactive toy with Puzzle elements that has you setting fire to various objects to watch them burn. It’s amusing but shallow, and while you may enjoy this game for a little bit, it’s not likely to be a game you’ll spend much time with before moving on. However, while it won’t be for everyone, the improved “pointer” motion controls on Nintendo Switch 2 definitely make this an improvement over playing the game on the Nintendo Switch. If you’re going to play this game, you should play it on Nintendo Switch 2. | ||||||||||||
| Mario Vs. Donkey Kong | Puzzle-Platformer | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drMario Vs. Donkey Kong is a remake of a Game Boy Advance Puzzle-Platformer that not only completely recreates the visuals and sound from scratch, but adds multiple new features and a bunch of new levels as well. This is an all-around solid remake of a solid game, which is why it’s disappointing that the price seems overly high for what’s on offer here. Still, if you’re a fan of Puzzle-Platformers this is a game you’d be advised to give it a chance if you can snag it on sale. | ||||||||||||
| MLB The Show 25 | Sports (Baseball) | B+ | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times, greatly improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drMLB The Show 25 once again brings back Sony’s stellar Baseball series with great gameplay, but at this point it’s getting harder to overlook the ugly graphics. If Nintendo Switch 2 is your only platform to play games on, this will still give you a solid Baseball game, but it’s definitely not going to be one that’s great to look at, even if it’s definitely better than the way the game plays on the original Nintendo Switch. | ||||||||||||
| Monster Hunter Rise | Action-RPG | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Massively improved loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drMonster Hunter Rise incorporates improvements made to the series in Monster Hunter World while adding the game-changing new wirebug and palamute to open up a world of new possibilities in traversal and combat. It’s one of the best-looking games from the original Nintendo Switch, and it is an extremely rewarding experience with excellent online co-op play. It’s still a game that’s going to be intimidating for more casual players, and it still bears some of the common flaws of the series, but players who can push through those flaws will find this game to be a must-have on the console. And while playing the game on Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t make it look or run any better, the absolutely enormous reduction in loading times is a huge improvement that makes this game even better on Nintendo’s new hardware. | ||||||||||||
| My Time at Portia | Action-RPG / Management Sim | B- | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drMy Time at Portia is and Action-RPG / Management Sim much like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, with more of a focus on gathering resources and crafting than farming (though you can farm as well). There’s plenty of variety and some really great gameplay at the core of this game, but unfortunately the game is plagued with terrible interface problems, loading screens (still present but much-improved on Nintendo Switch 2), and numerous other frustrations that sap much of the fun out of the experience. It’s still good, but it should have been so much better. | ||||||||||||
| New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe | Platformer | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly improved resolution | |||||||||||
tl;drNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port of a family-friendly 2012 Wii U Platformer, along with its standalone sequel. This game is absurdly overpriced and horribly unoriginal, and many players will be better off getting Super Mario Maker 2. Having said that, there’s no denying that the gameplay here is still excellent, and the presentation is absolutely polished. If you’re a fan of Platformers or just looking for a simple, straightforward Mario game, you should be more than satisfied with this game. | ||||||||||||
| Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly reduced loading times. | |||||||||||
tl;drNickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a game that combines game that combines Fighting Game, Platformer, and Party Game elements much like the Super Smash Bros. series, but featuring Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Ninja Turtles. The gameplay and presentation is overall decent, but also feels lacking in some areas, and some odd choices have been made with the art direction. Overall this is still a solid entry in the genre, and well worth picking up when the game goes on sale for $5. | ||||||||||||
| Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | C+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly reduced loading times, improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drNickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is a game which, much like its predecessor, combines Fighting Game, Platformer, and Party Game elements much like the Super Smash Bros. series, but featuring Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Ninja Turtles. This game addresses many of the issues the first game had, and presents exciting new gameplay elements… but at the same time, it doesn’t expand the roster and instead cuts half of the first game’s characters to make room for new ones, drastically changes characters that are still here, and on Nintendo platforms the framerate is stuck at 30FPS with a fairly low resolution. That said, the framerates are more stable on Nintendo Switch 2, and the massive loading times are severely reduced. The result is a game that, while still flawed, is far more playable here than on the original Nintendo Switch. | ||||||||||||
| Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound | Action-Platformer | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drNinja Gaiden: Ragebound is an Action-Platformer inspired by the classic Nintendo Entertainment System entries in the series, but taking the gameplay in new directions. For the most part, this makes for a game with plenty of variety and an absolutely gorgeous presentation, but occasional gameplay issues and lower framerates on Nintendo Switch hold this game back a bit. It’s still absolutely worth playing for Action-Platformer fans though, especially players who crave a challenge. | ||||||||||||
| No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Action-RPG | A- | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Online multiplayer and base-building content, beacon update, improved framerates, improved resolution, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drNo Man’s Sky is a universe-sized Open-World Action-RPG that is epic in scale and scope, and not only does the Nintendo Switch 2 present players with an uncompromised version of the game, but it does so with a free upgrade for anyone who bought the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Unless you’ve had your fill of this game on other platforms, this is an absolute must-buy. | ||||||||||||
| Octopath Traveler 0 | Turn-Based JRPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Separate releases, no upgrade path | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOctopath Traveler 0 is a Turn-Based JRPG that acts as a prequel to the series, and delivers similar gameplay with some nice new elements, such as some Management Simulation elements and quality-of-life improvements. However, it’s hard to ignore how this game is a somewhat lazy recycling of prior games in the series, particularly the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, and the result is something that, while still highly enjoyable, lacks the loving care the series is generally known for. If you’re an RPG fan or a fan of this series, this game is still worth playing, but don’t expect it to meet the same high standards as other Octopath games. | ||||||||||||
| On Your Tail | Open-World Action-RPG | C | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Some bugginess, greatly improved framerates, improved resolution, greatly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOn Your Tail is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure game set in a “furry” version of Italy that puts you in the role of an aspiring writer solving mysteries in the small coastal town of Borgo Marina. There’s a lot of character here, a wonderful presentation, and a fantastic cozy vibe… and also some worrisome bugs that plague the game. However, this is still an absolutely massive improvement over the way the game runs on Nintendo Switch, with improvements to graphics, framerates, and a huge reduction of loading times. While it’s still far from a perfect game, on Nintendo Switch 2 the flaws are actually tolerable, and I think players looking for a cozy detective game should give this a consideration. | ||||||||||||
| Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition | Metroidvania | A+ | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOri and the Blind Forest is, quite simply, one of the best Metroidvania games ever made, and not only is this an amazing port of a previously Xbox One-exclusive title, but it’s actually improved in its Switch release, which now stands tall as the truly definitive version of the game. This is a must-have game on the Switch, and if you missed it on the Xbox and PC, you owe it to yourself to get it now. | ||||||||||||
| Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Metroidvania | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOri and the Will of the Wisps is an outstanding sequel that improves on the first game in multiple areas, and changes enough things to make it distinct, although many of its best qualities are carried over from the first game. The Nintendo Switch version has a few technical issues (still present on Nintendo Switch 2), but overall this is still a gorgeous, incredibly fun, must-have Metroidvania. | ||||||||||||
| Ori: The Collection | Compilation / Metroidvania | A+ | A+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOri: The Collection on Nintendo Switch is a physical-only Compilation of Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. In sum, this is two of the most well-crafted, fun, and stunningly beautiful Metroidvania games ever made. The Compilation is priced about the same as it would cost to get these games separately, but in exchange you get both games on the cartridge, with a few small extras as well. If you have somehow missed out on these games until now, you should definitely remedy that oversight. | ||||||||||||
| Overcooked! 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Arcade / Party Game | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: CameraPlay support, GameShare support, new character, improved framerates, improved resolution, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drOvercooked 2, like the first game, is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. And like the first game, it’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch 2, with subtle improvements throughout that give it a slight edge over the original Overcooked, as well as multiple improvements over the Nintendo Switch version of the game. | ||||||||||||
| Persona 3 Reload | Turn-Based Monster-Collecting JRPG | B | B- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Separate releases (Persona 3 Portable), No upgrade path | Switch 2 Version Differences: Redesigned 3D characters and environments, more populated environments, improved menu design, expanded and remastered soundtrack, newly-recorded voice acting, quality-of-life updates, removed story content from other versions, worse loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drPersona 3 Reload on Nintendo Switch 2 is a remake of the classic Monster-Collecting JRPG, but there’s no upgrade path here, and for a full-priced release this is a disappointingly lackluster remake, even if it is probably the best version yet of a truly great game. If you have yet to play this game, I absolutely recommend it. But if you already own another version, I don’t think it’s going to be worth it for you to buy it again for this compromised remake. | ||||||||||||
| Pizza Possum | Stealth | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drPizza Possum is a family-friendly Stealth game where players take the role of a hungry possum trying to gobble up all food in sight without being nabbed by the cops. The core mechanics here are simple but work well, with some inspired mechanics that put a new spin on the Stealth genre, and an absolutely adorable presentation. I do wish this game built on the core gameplay to give it longer legs, but the short length is easily excused by the low $7 price. Overall, this is an outstanding game well worth checking out for casual gamers and Stealth die-hards alike. | ||||||||||||
| Pokemon Legends Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Monster-Collecting RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved textures, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drPokemon Legends Z-A is a family-friendly Open-World RPG set within Pokemon X and Y’s Lumiose City, with battles now in real-time, plenty of things to do, but all in an area that looks very samey and unimpressive throughout. This is still a highly-enjoyable game, and it’s the most polished a Pokemon RPG has been in years (especially on Nintendo Switch 2), but it’s hard not to be disappointed to see this series still struggle to bring us something as grandiose as the Pokemon franchise seems like it should be capable of. | ||||||||||||
| Pokemon Scarlet | Open-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, greatly improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drPokemon Scarlet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Violet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. The Nintendo Switch 2’s free game update fixes many (though not all) of the game’s graphical and performance issues, though a few gameplay frustrations remain. Despite that, this is one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, and this feels like the way this game was always meant to be played. | ||||||||||||
| Pokemon Violet | Open-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | A | |||||||||

The Nintendo Switch 2’s free game update fixes many (though not all) of the game’s graphical and performance issues, though a few gameplay frustrations remain. | Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, greatly improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drPokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet Double Pack pairs up both versions of the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, which it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. The Nintendo Switch 2 update for these games is a huge improvement to the game’s visuals and overall performance, though there are still flaws and gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, though as a bundle this is basically just two copies of the same game, so there’s little reason to get it, and it actually costs a tiny bit more than buying the games separately. | ||||||||||||
| Red Dead Redemption – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Action-RPG | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Mouse Mode support, HDR support, slightly improved loading times, greatly-improved framerate, improved resolution, reduced pop-in | |||||||||||
tl;drRed Dead Redemption is an Open-World Action-RPG set in the American Wild West, and this release is mostly a straight port of the legendary 15 year-old original game with a few very minor tweaks, and its Undead Nightmare expansion, but also missing the original game’s multiplayer, all at a bloated $50 price tag. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition doesn’t add any content, but improves the performance dramatically, with a free update for players who own the Nintendo Switch version of the game. It’s still feature-poor and overpriced, but otherwise this is an outstanding way to play this classic. | ||||||||||||
| Rocket League | Racing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.) | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game detects Nintendo Switch 2 and automatically adds improvements | Switch 2 Version Differences: Combines resolution of graphics mode and framerates of performance mode, improved loading times, improved textures, improved lighting, improved shadows, improved visual effects | |||||||||||
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It now features improved performance and visuals on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to the original Nintendo Switch, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. If you’re looking to add a great free-to-play game to your Nintendo Switch 2 library, consider this a must-have. | ||||||||||||
| Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Action-RPG / Management Simulation | B | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved resolution, reduced pop-in, improved shadows, Mouse Mode support in some sections | |||||||||||
tl;drRune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is an Action-RPG and “Farming RPG” Management Simulation that brings the long-running series in a new direction with a traditional Japanese-inspired aesthetic, and evolves both the combat and the farming gameplay in mostly-excellent new ways. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game improves the performance and adds mouse mode support to the town building parts of the game, making for a decent but not massive improvement to the game. Overall this is a solid new entry in this series and well worth a look for fans of its respective genres. | ||||||||||||
| Saints Row: The Third: The Full Package | Open-World Action-RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drSaint’s Row: The Third is a Grand Theft Auto-style Open-World Action-RPG with the absurdity level set to absolute maximum (including the sex and violence). The game still has some graphical issues even on Nintendo Switch 2, but they don’t interfere too much with the gameplay, which is absolutely brilliant, and well worth playing. | ||||||||||||
| Saints Row IV: Re-Elected | Open-World Action-RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drSaint’s Row IV is a super-violent off-the-wall Open-World Action-RPG that starts out like Grand Theft Auto, but soon adds superpowers, becoming something more like Crackdown. It’s a solid port of a joyously good game made even better on Nintendo Switch 2, even if there are still some graphical issues still remaining. | ||||||||||||
| Saints Row: The Big Purple Package | Compilation / Open-World Action-RPG | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drSaints Row: The Big Purple Package is a Compilation of two Open-World Action-RPG games – Saints Row: The Third: The Full Package, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected. Both games are outstanding and highly-creative, even if the Nintendo Switch ports had to make unfortunate graphical cutbacks (though this is somewhat improved on Nintendo Switch 2), this package is a solid deal on the pair of them. If you missed out on these games, don’t mind dated graphics (and in Saints Row The Third, outright ugly visuals) and want some great Open-World Action on Nintendo Switch 2, do not miss this bundle. | ||||||||||||
| Sky: Children of the Light | 3D Exploration | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: “Staticky” look, improved resolution, improved framerates, | |||||||||||
tl;drSky: Children of the Light is a free-to-play 3D Exploration game that follows directly in the footsteps of the developer’s prior game, Journey. While it never quite reaches the level of simple elegance or the emotional heights of that legendary game, Sky is nevertheless an audiovisual masterpiece that on balance looks better on Nintendo Switch 2. It’s certainly worth a try for those who are curious, especially with the price tag of “free”. | ||||||||||||
| Skylanders Imaginators | Action-RPG / 3D Platformer | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved loading times (Note: Skylanders figurines still scan fine on Nintendo Switch 2 controllers) | |||||||||||
tl;drSkylanders Imaginators is the sixth and currently final game in this Toys-to-Life series, a family-friendly Action-RPG with Platformer elements. This game doesn’t do anything truly major to shake up the formula, but rather refines it, making for the best game in the franchise. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch version is arguably the best game in the series thanks largely to the game not needing a “portal” device, and saving your Skylanders figurines so you don’t have to keep scanning them (and it’s slightly better on Nintendo Switch 2 thanks to improved loading times). Unfortunately, by 2025 this is also by far the most expensive version of the game, meaning that as fantastic as it is, you’re probably better off spending less to play any other version of the game. | ||||||||||||
| Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Kart Racer | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drSonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a family-friendly Kart Racer with a gimmick that each lap has players teleport to a different course. The course design here is wonderfully creative, the racing feels great, and the graphical performance on Nintendo Switch 2 is on par with or even better than some other modern platforms. But the frustration of far too many “bumper car” moments and nasty rubber-banding AI opponents suck a lot of the fun out of this game. This is still an enjoyable Kart Racing game, but its flaws keep it from being a truly great one. | ||||||||||||
| Splatoon 3 | Third-Person Shooter | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly-improved framerates, improved resolution, improved shadows | |||||||||||
tl;drSplatoon 3 is a multiplayer-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter that adds a bunch of new content, new features, and new improvements on top of what we saw in Splatoon 1 and 2, yet it still feels like much the same sort of experience. To be clear, that experience is an outstanding Third-Person Shooter that looks great, plays great, and is truly unique within the genre… except, well, that’s just it, it’s not completely unique – Splatoon 2 is right there, on the same platform. Still, even if it feels in many ways like “more of the same”, it’s more of the same of something great, and the improvements mean that this is the best Splatoon game yet. Just know that if you didn’t care for earlier games in the series, Splatoon 3 isn’t going to change your mind. | ||||||||||||
| Spyro Reignited Trilogy | Compilation / 3D Platformer | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly-improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drSpyro Reignited Trilogy is a collection of the original three PlayStation Spyro games, family-friendly 3D Platformers that have withstood the test of time and are presented here with absolutely gorgeous graphics, though still nowhere near as nice as what’s available on non-Nintendo platforms. While there are a few elements that haven’t aged well, like the camera, on the whole this is an absolute joy that fans of platformers should consider a must-have. | ||||||||||||
| Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | Compilation / 3D Platformer / Open-World | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerate, improved resolution, HDR support (only in Bowser’s Fury), GameShare support | |||||||||||
tl;drSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers – an upscaled and much-improved port of Super Mario 3D World, and the all-new Open-World game Bowser’s Fury. On their own, each wouldn’t hold a candle to Mario’s best adventures – 3D World isn’t nearly as ambitious as Odyssey or Galaxy, and Bowser’s Fury is too short. However, combined they come very close to that same level of quality, and the resulting package is a must-have for Mario fans. | ||||||||||||
| Super Mario Odyssey | 3D Platformer | A++ | A++ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, HDR support, GameShare support | |||||||||||
tl;drSuper Mario Odyssey is Mario’s long-awaited return to 3D platforming, and it’s just about everything fans of the series could want. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it has damn near perfected it, filling the game with new surprises around every corner. It is an absolute must-have game on the Nintendo Switch | ||||||||||||
| Super Mario Party Jamboree: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV | Party Game / Minigame Collection | A- | B | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $20 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, new Jamboree TV game mode with Mouse Mode support, microphone support, and camera support | |||||||||||
tl;drSuper Mario Party Jamboree is, in my opinion, the absolute best that the Mario Party series of family-friendly Party Game and Minigame Collection titles has ever had to offer, and this is still true on Nintendo Switch 2. Unfortunately, just about every “upgrade” the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has to offer is either a mixed bag or an absolute flop, from negligible graphical upgrades that don’t extend to the original game’s content, a terrible lack of new minigames, camera minigames that just don’t work right, and poorly-conceived mic minigames. At the very least the mouse mode minigames are quite good, but there’s only 14 of them, and to play them you have to ditch the original Mario Party Jamboree’s excellent Pro mode. Overall, this paid expansion is a major disappointment, and the fact that the original game is still truly outstanding is the only reason this is still being rated as highly as it is. | ||||||||||||
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition | Open-World First-Person Action-RPG | A++ | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free download for owners of digital version of Nintendo Switch game (must own Anniversary Edition expansion) | Switch 2 Version Differences: Dynamic Mouse Mode support, improved resolution, improved textures, improved lighting, improved fog, improved loading times, water level glitch | |||||||||||
tl;drSkyrim is an Open-World Action-RPG that gives players a huge, detailed world with an epic storyline, and lets them decide what they want to do in that world. This version of the game includes all of the expansions to the game, adds in a few unique features of its own, such as gyroscopic aiming, and has a curated selection of enhancements from other platforms’ Anniversary Edition releases, but don’t expect anything close to parity with those versions. Rather, this release only manages to update the graphics to merely tolerable specs, add in mouse mode, and make a few small visual improvements while also adding in some bugs. This is still one of the greatest videogames of all time, but it’s disappointing that this is all Nintendo Switch 2 got when the hybrid console is capable of so much more. | ||||||||||||
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Action-RPG | A++ | A++ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade, free with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, greatly improved resolution, HDR support, improved textures, improved loading times, added save slot, support for Zelda Notes smartphone app features (includes stats, location app, “Voice memories” voice clips, item share feature, photo editor) | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an Open-World Action-RPG that remains one of the greatest games of all-time, and this release is absolutely the best version of this game ever made. It isn’t without its flaws, and many of its new features are superfluous and don’t add much, but even just the improvements to graphics and performance are enough to put this game well beyond the original release of the game. Unless you feel like you already got your fill of the original release, this is an absolute must-have. | ||||||||||||
| The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom | Top-Down Action-RPG | A | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: improved framerates, HDR support | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a Top-Down Action-RPG that combines elements of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to make for something that’s truly unique and wonderful within the series, befitting Zelda’s first mainline adventure as the main protagonist. The new echo mechanic, while not quite as groundbreaking as Tears’ Ultrahand, is still inspired, and the puzzle design and boss design is phenomenal. This may not be quite at the same level as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but it is still an absolute must-play game, and it plays even better on Nintendo Switch 2, without the framerate issues it was noted to have on Nintendo Switch. Definitely worth a look! | ||||||||||||
| The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening | Top-Down Action-RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Free Nintendo Switch 2 Patch | Switch 2 Version Differences: improved framerates, HDR support | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a remake of the classic Game Boy games that gives the game a new, memorable art style, but mostly leaves the gameplay of the original intact. Unfortunately, this release has numerous flaws, including control issues, and missed opportunities in what little new content there is, although the framerate issues the game had on Nintendo Switch are fixed on Nintendo Switch 2. However, in addition, the $60 price tag is ridiculous. It’s still a great game, but in many ways it’s also a disappointing one. | ||||||||||||
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Open-World Action-RPG | A++ | A++ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $10 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade, free with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improved framerates, greatly improved resolution, HDR support, improved textures, improved loading times, added save slot, support for Zelda Notes smartphone app features (includes stats, location app, “Voice memories” voice clips, item share feature, photo editor, autobuild sharing) | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an Open-World Action-RPG that remains one of the greatest games of all-time, and this release is absolutely the best version of this game ever made. It isn’t without its flaws, and many of its new features are superfluous and don’t add much, but even just the improvements to graphics and performance are enough to put this game well beyond the original release of the game. Unless you feel like you already got your fill of the original release, this is an absolute must-have. | ||||||||||||
| The Outer Worlds | Open-World Action-RPG / First-Person Shooter | B | C+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Greatly improves loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Outer Worlds is an Open-World Action-RPG and First-Person Shooter that’s much in the same vein as the Fallout games, and it features some incredibly good writing and voice acting, as well as some comparable gameplay, albeit with a bit more focus on its First-Person Shooter elements. Having said that, the segmented map design the of the game’s world-hopping make the Open-World elements far less appealing, and the Nintendo Switch version is still graphically far inferior compared to other versions, even on Nintendo Switch 2. It’s still perfectly playable and fans wanting a solid Open-World game on the go may want to look into it, but those who can get it on another platform are better off doing so. | ||||||||||||
| The Touryst Deluxe | Action-RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch 2 release discounted to $5 for owners of the digital version on Nintendo Switch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, slight improvement to loading times, improved anti-aliasing, dynamic ambient occlusion, improved “depth of field” effect, improved wave voxel effects | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Touryst is an Action-RPG similar to the classic Zelda games, minus the combat, where players play a tourist exploring a series of islands and solving puzzles. There’s a lot of variety and creativity here, but it frequently lacks depth, and occasionally has tedious backtracking. There’s also absolutely terrible platforming with a horrible, uncooperative camera. There’s a lot to love in this game, but a lot to be frustrated with as well. Overall it’s still worth playing, despite its glaring imperfections. Also, if you own the Nintendo Switch version of the game, you can get the Nintendo Switch 2 version for only $5, which is a nice bonus. | ||||||||||||
| The Wonderful 101 Remastered | Spectacle Fighter | C | C | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Slightly-improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drThe Wonderful 101: Remastered is a Spectacle Fighter where players command a large group of heroes who can get into different formations to combat enemies. While this port does what it can to make the game work on the Nintendo Switch, it’s clear that this game was designed with the Wii U in mind, and the attempt at bringing those features over to the Switch is clunky and frankly the game itself is nowhere near as wonderful as Platinum’s other games on the Nintendo Switch. | ||||||||||||
| Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 | Compilation / Sports (Skateboarding) | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a superb Compilation and Remake of the first two highly-celebrated games in the Skateboarding series that updates their gameplay and combines them into one whole cohesive experience while retaining what made them so beloved in the first place. The Nintendo Switch version is a severe downgrade in both graphical fidelity and performance from the versions of the game on more powerful hardware, and playing it on Nintendo Switch 2 brings only modest framerate improvements. This is still a very playable version of the game and is otherwise intact and feature-complete, including solid online play. It’s an acceptable way to play Tony Hawk on Nintendo Switch 2, though players may want to wait for the soon-to-be-released sequel. | ||||||||||||
| Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Action-RPG / Turn-Based JRPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: $1 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved resolution, improved framerates, improved loading times, greater environmental detail, improved shadows, improved distance animation | |||||||||||
tl;drTrails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a full remake of a 21 year-old classic that reworks the game from the ground up with massive improvements to gameplay and presentation. Some elements of the story and character customization still feel a tad dated, but overall this is a superb blend of Turn-Based JRPG and Action-RPG, and a great entry point for anyone curious about the Trails franchise. | ||||||||||||
| Trials Rising | 2D Stunt Racing | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: GameCube controller support, greatly improved loading times, improved framerates | |||||||||||
tl;drTrials Rising is a 2D Stunt Racing game where you race a motorcycle on an obstacle course. The game really pushes microtransactions at you, and is still inferior to other versions of the game, but this game gets multiple excellent improvements on Nintendo Switch 2 over the same game played on Nintendo Switch, and the core gameplay is still excellent and well worth trying out. | ||||||||||||
| We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie | Arcade | A- | A- | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: improved loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drWe Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie is a remaster of a family-friendly PlayStation 2 classic Arcade-style game that has you rolling a ball to pick up various objects to make your ball bigger to roll up even bigger objects. This is the second game in the Katamari series, and takes the concept to even kookier places than the first game, but overall remains a great blend of surprisingly compelling gameplay and a delightfully silly nonsensical presentation. This remaster adds a few improvements, but mostly this is a fairly minor update of the classic game rather than an entirely new experience. Having said that, it’s still a joy to play, and I highly recommend it. | ||||||||||||
| World of Goo | Puzzle | A- | A | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved motion controls | |||||||||||
tl;drWorld of Goo is a physics-based Puzzle game that’s oozing with personality and overflowing with inventive ideas, where you build towers and bridges to get cute little goo balls to a pipe at the exit. On Nintendo Switch 2, the flaws in this game’s “pointer” motion controls that were present on Nintendo Switch are no more, leaving a delightful game that is absolutely worth adding to your Nintendo Switch 2 library. Do not miss it! | ||||||||||||
| Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition | Open-World RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch game played on Nintendo Switch 2 | Switch 2 Version Differences: Improved framerates, improved resolution, greatly reduced loading times | |||||||||||
tl;drXenoblade Chronicles X is an Open-World RPG about the remnants of humanity trying to survive on a distant planet after fleeing an Earth destroyed by a massive battle between alien forces. This is a massive, ambitious game, one with a lot of complex systems at work, and thankfully the Nintendo Switch version of the game adds a wealth of improvements and additional content over the Wii U version. If you’re an RPG fan with a Nintendo Switch, this is definitely a game you should look into, although it is still far from flawless. Despite this, it remains a truly unique and enjoyable game, and one still very much worth playing. | ||||||||||||
| Yakuza Kiwami | Action-RPG | B+ | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch 2 release discounted to $10 for owners of the digital version on Nintendo Switch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Additional language options, slightly improved loading times, greatly improved framerates, greatly improved resolution | |||||||||||
tl;drYakuza Kiwami is an Action-RPG focusing on the criminal underworld of contemporary Tokyo, with an extremely detailed world that begs to be explored, and an excellent story with some excellent twists and turns. Unfortunately, the inconsistent combat and an extremely linear early game hinder this otherwise excellent experience. Still, if you can put up with its flaws, I still think this game is absolutely worth playing. It’s a mixed bag, but that mix is mostly very good. | ||||||||||||
| Yooka-Replaylee | Puzzle | B | B+ | |||||||||
| Switch 2 Upgrade Type: Nintendo Switch 2 release discounted to $21 for owners of the digital version (of Yooka-Laylee) on Nintendo Switch | Switch 2 Version Differences: Completely remade progression, altered move set, altered level designs, added quality-of-life features, improved resolution, improved texture detail, added environmental detail, improved lighting, improved water, remastered soundtrack | |||||||||||
tl;drYooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer that deliberately follows in the footsteps of the classic Banjo-Kazooie, and it definitely still has that same sort of magic, even if it’s a formula that feels like it’s aged poorly in some areas. This reworked version of the game on Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive overhaul that tows the line between remaster and remake, and is absolutely the best version of the game, and a must-play for fans of 3D Platformers. | ||||||||||||
