Nintendo Switch Game Re-Reviews

Game1st Grade2nd GradeReason
Burnout Paradise RemasteredBA-Price reduction from $50 to $30
tl;drBurnout Paradise Remastered is a solid port to the Nintendo Switch of an excellent Open-World Arcade-style Racing Game, though the game does show its age somewhat, and the open-world elements detract from some elements of the series like the crash mode and multiplayer. At its new price point of $30, it’s still more expensive than other versions of the game, but this price tag is far more palatable, and Burnout Paradise is such a fantastic racing game that Nintendo Switch racing fans should consider it a must-have.
Eggy PartyC+FStability and performance issues
tl;drEggy Party is a free-to-play, online-only, multiplayer-focused Arcade-style 3D Platformer that is clearly trying to copy the Fall Guys formula. Unfortunately, while this game’s performance was always horrible, in the time since my original review it has become outright unplayable. Do not waste time downloading this absolute disaster of a game.
FortniteB+A-Added content
tl;drFortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, and the Nintendo Switch version has some ugly performance issues that make it one of the worst ways to play the game, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game.
GRID AutosportBB+Added features, including online multiplayer
tl;drGRID Autosport is a port of a 2014 Racing Sim that improves the graphics over the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, as well as adding a huge variety of options and different ways to play. This was already a solid Racing Sim before, and the improvements almost make this the definitive version, although the lack of analog triggers on most Nintendo Switch controllers are one noteworthy flaw (though one you can address with a GameCube controller if you have the adapter). Otherwise, this is an all-around excellent Racing Sim, and currently the best game in the genre on the Switch, a deserving honor even if there’s not much competition for that honor right now.
Mario Golf: Super RushB-B-Added courses, characters, and game modes
tl;drMario Golf: Super Rush is a cartoony game of Golf starring Mario and friends, with this entry in the series adding a new Adventure mode, a Speed Golf mode, and a Battle Golf mode. While the core golf gameplay here is good, many of the other elements of this game are poorly thought-out, flawed, or severely lacking content (still lacking even with free DLC adding more content post-launch). The result is a game that’s very good… and also a huge disappointment.
MinecraftA++AGame bugginess and instability
tl;drMinecraft is a family-friendly Open-World sandbox game with Action-RPG elements that has you deconstructing and rebuilding the world at your whim, with endless possibilities for those looking to create or explore. The Nintendo Switch version is not the ideal version of the game, and this version also still bears the bugs that every version of the game seems to have, but it is still a must-play game that’s absolutely worth playing despite this.
Missile Command: RechargedC+C-Price raised from $3 to $10
tl;drMissile Command: Recharged is a reimagining of the classic ‘80s Arcade game where players blast away incoming bombs with missile strikes. The presentation here is great, the new progression mechanics are nice, and the great classic gameplay still works well today. However, the game’s ridiculously high difficulty spikes almost immediately, and the inflated price makes this game seem like far from a good value. There’s some fun to be had here for a select audience, but most players are better off skipping this.
Nintendo Switch SportsBB+Added content (Golf), features (local wireless play)
tl;drNintendo Switch Sports is a worthy successor to the Wii Sports franchise, with excellent versions of Bowling, Chambara (swordfighting), Golf, and Soccer, decent versions of Tennis and Volleyball, and a terrible version of Badminton. The game is colorful and polished, the sports are fun and accessible, and the online play works great. This game doesn’t do much to evolve this series, but it is a well-rounded and highly enjoyable entry in the series nonetheless.
NorthgardFC+Better understanding that the game’s issues come from poorly-conveyed information, not design flaws
tl;drNorthgard is a Real-Time Strategy game about vikings exploring a new land while warring with competing tribes. This game has a good variety of options and decent core gameplay, but it’s more complex than it initially appears, and does a terrible job conveying vital information to the player. This game is also poorly optimized for Nintendo Switch. If you’re a fan of the genre, you may find this game to be enjoyable, but definitely consult a wiki guide before you start playing.
Rocket LeagueAAUpdated review to reflect the game going from $20 to free-to-play
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch.
Shovel Knight: Treasure TroveAA+Updated review to include added expansion content
tl;drShovel Knight: Treasure Trove is a collection of the Action-Platformer Shovel Knight and all four of its expansions, including Plague of Shadows which is not purchasable separately. Shovel Knight was already a must-have game, but this collection is so jam-packed with value it makes the entire package one of the best games to get on the Nintendo Switch. Unless you have this collection on another platform, you need to get it on your Nintendo Switch.
Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ FunC+B+Original review failed to account for touchscreen controls, and didn’t include the various Party Game minigames
tl;drTaiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ Fun is the first Nintendo Switch entry in Namco’s family-friendly Japanese taiko drumming Music-Rhythm game series. Be warned that if you don’t by the taiko drum accessory, the motion controls are terrible, and the gamepad controls lack a soul, but the touchscreen controls are excellent and the “Party Game” mode makes for great gameplay in the same vein as Rhythm Heaven. This game’s cutesy, Japanesey presentation won’t be for everyone, but if you can work around its flaws, Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ Fun is a solid addition to your Nintendo Switch Music-Rhythm library.
Tetris 99CC+Updated review to include added expansion content and updates
tl;drTetris 99 is a Falling Block Puzzle game that takes the original Tetris and has players fighting it out to be the top player out of a field of 99 competitors, and it’s free to play for anyone with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Unfortunately, matchmaking is so terrible that most players will never win a match. The $10 DLC definitely improves the game, but even then all of the added content seems to be flawed in some way or another. There are some good ideas here, and there is some fun to be had for those who can put up with those flaws, but regardless of whether you play the free version or get the DLC, Tetris 99 is still a disappointment.
Turok 2: Seeds of EvilBBUpdated review to include new online multiplayer
tl;drTurok 2 is a port of the old-school N64 FPS that does a good job of cleaning up the game to be playable in the modern day. It still looks blocky and archaic, but the smooth framerates make this a great way to enjoy the fast-paced action, so long as you aren’t frustrated by the backtracking, the loss of split-screen multiplayer, and the abandoned online multiplayer.
WandersongBA-Updated review to reflect my change in opinion about this game
tl;drWandersong is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players in the role of a bard looking to save the world by singing different musical notes to solve puzzles. Despite its simple, unimpressive graphics and lack of challenging gameplay, this game has an absolutely charming presentation, a wonderful story, excellent music, and is overall a fantastic experience for all ages.

Exlene Wireless Pro ControllerB+A-Updated review to include new information about rumble feature and pricing
tl;drExlene Wireless Pro Controller has two features that are unusual for a third-party Nintendo Switch controller – it can wake the Nintendo Switch from sleep mode, and it can scan Amiibo figurines. It also has some nice, user-friendly extra features like turbo functionality, as well as PC and mobile device support. I don’t like the form factor quite as much as Nintendo’s own Pro Controller, and there are a few other minor issues, but otherwise this is an outstanding controller on Nintendo Switch, and at a price that ranges from the very good $50 down to a ridiculously good $30, I’d say this controller is one that needs to be in the discussion when talking about the best controllers on the Nintendo Switch.
