Arcade Brawler

GameGenreGrade
Castle Crashers RemasteredArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drCastle Crashers Remastered is a port of the 2008 Arcade Brawler with updated visuals, all previously-released DLC, and a new game mode. Well, the new game mode is terrible, but the core game is still as great as ever, and fans of the genre who haven’t already played this game to death on other platforms should consider this one a must-have.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game – Complete EditionArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drScott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is quite simply one of the greatest Arcade Brawlers ever made, and its long-awaited release on Nintendo Switch does not disappoint. While this game still bears some of the flaws of the genre (short length, repetitive combat), it is nevertheless an outstanding experience with tons of depth and a great retro-style presentation that is a must-have for any fan of the genre.
Streets of Rage 4Arcade BrawlerA-
tl;drStreets of Rage 4 is a return to Sega’s classic Arcade Brawler franchise after an over 25 year absence, and perhaps the wait was worth it because this is not just the best game in the series, but one of the best games in the genre, with a gorgeous presentation, a fantastic soundtrack, and small but clever improvements to the core gameplay. There are still areas where this game could be improved, but overall this is a must-have game for fans of the genre, as well as co-op Action game fans in general.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s RevengeArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an Arcade Brawler that seeks to recapture the magic of the classic Ninja Turtles arcade games, and I don’t think it quite succeeds at that… but that’s okay because it’s a truly phenomenal entry in the genre in its own right, and one loaded with charm, great gameplay, and tons of wonderful little references to the Ninja Turtles franchise that are sure to please series fans and Arcade Brawler fans alike. If that describes you, you should definitely get ahold of this game.
Capcom Beat ‘Em Up BundleCompilation / Arcade BrawlerB+
tl;drCapcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle is a collection of seven Arcade Brawler games originally released in arcades from 1989 to 1997. These games range from average to very good, with some of the best games in this collection never previously released on consoles. This collection has some good extras, and a good price. If you’re a fan of the genre, or just looking for a decent action game to play in co-op, this game is well worth getting.
Fight ‘N RageArcade BrawlerB+
tl;drFight’N Rage is an Arcade Brawler that is a love letter to the genre, working in numerous references to many of the genre’s classic games, along with an excellent combat system, good graphics, and plenty of extra unlockable content. While there are a few rough edges, this is overall a must-have for fans of the genre.
River City GirlsArcade BrawlerB+
tl;drRiver City Girls is an Arcade-style Brawler in the Kunio-Kun series, with gameplay fittingly similar to River City Ransom. The core fighting gameplay is excellent, the presentation is outstanding, and the soundtrack is incredible, but this game also has a lot of rough edges that make this more frustrating at times than it needs to be. This is still absolutely a highlight of its genre, but its flaws bring it down a notch below the even better game it could have been.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga CollectionCompilation / Arcade Brawler / Fighting Game / Action-PlatformerB+
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a Compilation of 13 of Konami’s classic Ninja Turtles games, with the highlights being 2 different versions of the original Arcade game, 2.5 versions of Turtles in Time, and the frequently overlooked NES game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. Add to this a massive collection of extras and behind-the-scenes content, and this is a must-have collection for Arcade Brawler enthusiasts… even if it’s padded out with a lot of non-Arcade Brawler games that range from mediocre to outright terrible.
The Last FriendTower Defense / Arcade BrawlerB+
tl;drThe Last Friend is a colorful, cartoony post-apocalyptic game that combines Plants Vs. Zombies-style lane-based Tower Defense with Arcade Brawler style action, and while it’s not quite on the same level as Plants Vs. Zombies, it’s still a lot of fun, with the Brawler elements bringing both an added layer of strategy and a more frenzied pace. The game is a bit short and lacking in features, but for the $15 price tag, this is a very good doggo.
Ninjin: Clash of CarrotsArcade BrawlerB
tl;drNinjin: Clash of Carrots is a refreshingly unique arcade brawler hidden under a cutesy exterior. While the presentation leaves something to be desired, the gameplay is original and the sense of humor here is amusing. Fans of the genre, don’t let yourself be fooled by the game’s fluffy visuals, it’s well worth your time.
Tonight We RiotArcade BrawlerB-
tl;drTonight We Riot is an Arcade-style Brawler where players control an anti-capitalist mob looking to fight back the cops and do some real class warfare. The concept of taking a Brawler and expanding it out to a full mob is a fun idea, and while it’s fun, it’s also chaotic and a bit repetitive. Still, if this idea appeals to you, I think you’ll find this game’s satire and core gameplay worth checking out.
Sword of the GuardianArcade BrawlerC+
tl;drSword of the Guardian is an Arcade-style Brawler set in a medieval fantasy world that has you fighting soldiers as one of three characters. Unfortunately, everything about this game is extremely uneven, from a presentation that has some nice visual effects but also mismatched graphical styles and glitches, gameplay that has some nice mechanics but clunky movement, and a story that aspires to be epic but falls flat on its face. Overall, there is some good here, but it’s buried under a confusing mess that’s probably best to just not bother with.
9 Monkeys of ShaolinArcade BrawlerC
tl;dr9 Monkeys of Shaolin is an Arcade Brawler set in a world inspired by classic kung fu films, and it does some interesting things with its gameplay, but these gameplay elements lack polish, and the game suffers due to its world feeling too generic. It’s not a bad entry in the genre, but it fails to make the best use of its elements to deliver a memorable experience.
Bud Spencer and Terence Hill – Slaps and BeansArcade BrawlerC
tl;drSlaps and Beans is a pretty standard Brawler based on a pair of semi-obscure Italian Western stars from a half a century ago. While it’s not without its good qualities, the gameplay isn’t especially noteworthy, and the game’s juvenile sense of humor isn’t well-suited to its T rating. If you’re looking for the next great brawler to play on the Switch, look elsewhere.
Clan NTop-Down Arcade BrawlerC
tl;drClan N is an Arcade Brawler with a zoomed-out, top-down perspective. The presentation here is fantastic, and the game has plenty of variety, but the core gameplay suffers from a multitude of problems that just leave the combat unsatisfying. Fans of Brawlers may want to give it a look if they’re curious to try something a bit different, but most should probably skip this one.
Full Metal FuriesArcade BrawlerC
tl;drFull Metal Furies is an Arcade-style Brawler about a group of four warriors hunting down humanity-threatening titans using anachronistic weaponry. It has some creative mechanics, but unfortunately it also has multiple issues that slow the game down and make it far more tedious and frustrating than it needs to be. You have much better options for Arcade Brawlers on Nintendo Switch.
Jay and Silent Bob: Mall BrawlArcade BrawlerC
tl;drJay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl is an Arcade-style Brawler featuring an original story starring Kevin Smith’s famous pair of miscreants. Fans who follow these characters will enjoy the fanservice, and those who enjoy 8-Bit-style retro games may appreciate the presentation, but beyond that there’s little to set this game apart from the crowd.
Streets of Red – Devils Dare DeluxeArcade BrawlerC
tl;drStreets of Red is an Arcade Brawler that pits videogame character cosplayers against a horde of horror monsters, which sounds like a great idea, but a bland presentation and a poorly thought-out execution system sap much of the fun out of it. It’s still a decent game, but never comes close to meeting the full potential of the sales pitch.
Super Punch PatrolArcade BrawlerC
tl;drSuper Punch Patrol is an Arcade Brawler from the creator of Gunman Clive, and has a similar sketchy cel-shaded presentation. However, beyond that presentation and some nice references to other greats of the genre, there’s not much here that truly excels or innovates in the genre. It’s decent, and as a $5 purchase it’s a decent value, but you’d probably be better off spending a little more to get something even better.
Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler BundleCompilation / Arcade Brawler / Sports (Various)C-
tl;drDouble Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle is a compilation of 14-18 games (depending on how you count) in these respective franchises, largely in the Arcade Brawler genre along with various Sports games, all originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and Famicom. Unfortunately, most of the games here are fundamentally flawed in some way, and the best games in this collection are already available in the Nintendo Switch Online NES app, or able to be purchased separately. As a result, only the most dedicated series fans should bother with this package.
PixelJunk Scrappers DeluxeArcade BrawlerD+
tl;drPixelJunk Scrappers is an Arcade Brawler set in a post-apocalyptic future where players fight robots while trying to collect as much scrap as they can. Unfortunately, the Brawler gameplay here is extremely simple and shallow, and the scrap-collecting serves as a distraction that doesn’t bring much else to the table. You have far better choices for Arcade Brawler games on Nintendo Switch.
ACA NEOGEO King of the Monsters 2Arcade BrawlerD
tl;dr King of the Monsters 2 is an Arcade-style Brawler starring giant city-stomping kaiju monsters. It’s a solid concept, but it’s ruined by frustrating game mechanics and enemies’ ability to keep piling on you after you take a hit, making that one hit into a guaranteed death at times. Skip this one.
Retro Fighter – Dragon’s RevengeArcade BrawlerF
tl;drRetro Fighter is a horrible, buggy, repetitive, incomplete mess of an Arcade Brawler that makes it painfully obvious it is a zero-effort asset flip. Do not waste your time on this game.

.

Arcade Brick Breaker

GameGenreGrade
Shatter Remastered DeluxeArcade Brick BreakerB+
tl;drShatter is an Arcade Brick Breaker that makes multiple innovating additions to the genre, such as the game’s signature “suck/blow” abilities that interact with the physics in various ways. This game doesn’t do anything to revolutionize the genre, but it is nevertheless an outstanding Brick Breaker that should definitely be played by anyone who enjoys the genre.
Sky RacketShmup / Arcade Brick BreakerB+
tl;drSky Racket is a family-friendly game that combines the Shmup and Brick Breaker genres into one fun, cohesive style of gameplay with a fantastic, colorful, expressive art style and some absolutely superb co-op play. There are a few frustrating flaws that may result in you taking a few unearned hits on occasion, but otherwise this game is a joy to play, especially if you have a friend to play it with.
Death’s HangoverArcade Brick BreakerB
tl;drDeath’s Hangover is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker where players take the role of a pair of idiot warriors that Death has resurrected to invade Bastard Dracula’s castle and take back the souls that the villain stole while Death was on a bender. It’s a solid entry into its genre, with some unique and fun mechanics and a silly but endearing personality that set it apart. It’s a bit short and lacking features that were in the PC version, but for $5 it’s well worth a look if you want a cheap, fun Arcade-style game.
DungeonoidArcade Brick BreakerB
tl;drDungeonoid is an Arcade Brick Breaker set in a dark Medieval fantasy castle filled with monsters that shoot status effect magic at your paddle, and with levels where you must collect a key and use it on a chest before you can head to the exit. Clever gimmicks like these aside, Dungeonoid is just an all-around well-crafted Brick Breaker, with good controls and some excellent level design. Fans of this genre will definitely want to pick this game up.
WizorbArcade Brick BreakerB
tl;drWizorb is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker with a medieval fantasy theme. The challenge level is a bit high for my tastes, and I’m frustrated that the game completely avoids the opportunity to add fun permanent upgrades, but for $5 this is still a solid entry in the genre worth checking out.
Arkanoid – Eternal BattleArcade Brick BreakerC+
tl;drArkanoid – Eternal Battle is an Arcade Brick Breaker with multiple game modes that all offer something unique and interesting, but this game suffers overall due to a lack of options, issues with its difficulty curve, and deserted online lobbies. This is still an enjoyable entry in the genre, but it definitely seems like it is a worse game than it could have been.
Brick BreakerArcade Brick Breaker / Party GameC+
tl;drBrick Breaker (not to be confused with Amazing Brick Breaker) is, as the name implies, an Arcade-style Brick Breaker, and a visually good-looking one at that. Unfortunately, the controls are lacking and the physics are wonky. On the bright side though, this game’s multiplayer modes, while feature-poor, are a lot of fun, and while this may be a mediocre Arcade-style Brick Breaker, it’s actually a pretty decent Party Game.
Doughlings: ArcadeArcade Brick BreakerC+
tl;drDoughlings: Arcade is a family-friendly Arcade Brick Breaker where the bricks are actually color-coded “doughlings” critters that fall when they’re not supported by the ceiling, much like in Puzzle Bobble. It’s a decent concept, but one that proves to have just as many drawbacks as benefits. Also, the cheesy presentation isn’t fantastic. All things considered, fans of the genre will still likely find this game to be worth their time, but everyone else is probably better off trying something else.
Strikey SistersArcade Brick BreakerC+
tl;drStrikey Sisters is an Arcade-style brick breaker game that has you batting a magical ball at bricks and enemies in a style reminiscent of games like Arkanoid. Unfortunately, the way you’re incessantly swarmed by enemies as an annoying announcer repeatedly calls out over the action mars what could have been a really fun experience.
Dungeonoid 2 AwakeningArcade Brick BreakerC
tl;drDungeonoid 2, like its predecessor, is an Arcade Brick Breaker set in a Medieval fantasy world, but this sequel aims for a more Arcade-like experience, and it’s worse off as a result. The scrolling mechanic causes hit detection issues at the bottom of the screen (where it’s most important), and results in worse level design. Plus, this game lacks some of the retro charm of the original. The result is a game that, while arguably more ambitious, still ends up being far worse.
#Breakforcist BattleArcade Brick BreakerC-
tl;dr#Breakforcist Battle is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker with a haunted breakfast theme. It has a wonderfully colorful, manic presentation that suits the game well, but the gameplay itself actually feels a bit too manic, to the point where it’s hard to fully understand everything that’s going on. Fans of the genre may enjoy this game, but most are probably better off going with a game that’s less of an assault on the senses.
Breakout: RechargedArcade Brick BreakerC-
tl;drBreakout: Recharged is an Arcade Brick Breaker inspired by the Atari classic. This version improves the presentation, makes progression more fluid, and adds temporary power-ups, but otherwise leaves the original formula mostly intact. Unfortunately, one of the new elements here can lead to occasional no-win scenarios, a needless frustration that makes it hard to recommend this game. Get another Brick Breaker instead.
Energy InvasionArcade Brick Breaker/2-Stick ShooterC-
tl;drEnergy Invasion is a cross between a 2-Stick Shooter and an Arcade-style brick breaker game like Arkanoid. Unfortunately, the game feels unpolished and not especially welcoming to players getting used to its odd concept.
DungeonSmash – Medieval DungeonsArcade Brick BreakerD+
tl;drDungeonSmash is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker with a Medieval theme where players have a ridiculous amount of balls on-screen at a time. This can be viscerally satisfying, but the core gameplay is terribly shallow, the presentation is repetitive and dull, and the advertised level creator is nowhere to be found. While you may get a brief guilty pleasure from this game, overall it simply isn’t worth it.
Glaive: Brick BreakerArcade Brick BreakerD
tl;drGlaive: Brick Breaker is an Arcade-style brick breaker game that’s basically an Arkanoid clone. It’s not without its good qualities, but it is deeply flawed, including terrible ball physics, which kinda’ defeats the point of this sort of game. As it stands, this game is too broken to really enjoy.
Akihabara Crash! 123Stage+1Arcade Brick BreakerD-
tl;drAkihabara Crash is an Arcade-style brick breaker game that tries to toe the line of being an Ecchi game without really having any truly risque content, and as a result it ends up being a game for no one. It’s just creepy enough to be uncomfortable, but not sexy enough to be titillating, and the actual gameplay itself is so uninspired and cookie-cutter that there’s simply no reason I can think of that anyone would find this game entertaining.

.

Mobile-Style 1/2-Button Arcade Games

GameGenreGrade
One Finger Death Punch 2ArcadeA-
tl;drOne Finger Death Punch 2 is an Arcade-style game that has you using only two buttons to have your stick figure fend off an army of attackers, and despite the simple gameplay and visuals, the game is an absolute blast to play. It’s a shame the multiplayer is such a dud, but there’s plenty enough single-player content here to keep you playing for a good long while, and I highly recommend you do.
OctogeddonArcade / Misc. GameB-
tl;drOctogeddon is an odd Arcade-style game where you play a giant octopus and gradually upgrade his various tentacles to ward off incoming threats, in a way that feels a bit reminiscent of a tower defense game, sorta’. It can get a bit repetitive, but it’s an interesting and unique game that’s easy to play and has an amusing presentation. Worth a look.
Tricky TapsArcadeB-
tl;drTricky Taps is a family-friendly 1-Button Arcade-style game where players guide a ball through a machine by controlling mechanical elements of the machine, all with one button. The gameplay is simple but enjoyable, and there’s plenty of content here. It’s just a shame that the presentation is so simple and the game doesn’t capitalize more on the potential this lays the foundation for. But for only $5, this is a fun time-waster worth the small price tag.
One Person StoryArcadeC+
tl;drOne Person Story is a Mobile-Style One-Button Arcade game where you are pressing the button to open and close doors and other objects to try to get a bouncing ball to pass safely from the bottom of the screen to the top. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but there’s enough variety here to make it a decent time-waster, and the music is actually quite good.
Ding Dong XLArcadeC
tl;drDing Dong XL is a decent Arcade-style time-waster where you’re sending a ball back and forth across the screen while trying to avoid colliding with objects. It makes for a decent time-waster, but lacks the depth to be much more than that.
ExitMan DeluxeArcade / Party GameC
tl;drExitMan is a family-friendly Arcade-style Party game where players must run left and right to get under gaps in the ceiling before it comes crashing down to squash those underneath it. There’s a good variety of game modes here, and the gameplay is accessible enough that anyone can play it, but it’s so simple and repetitive that it’s not likely to hold your interest for very long. I suppose for $5, it might make for a mildly amusing distraction, but it’s not a distraction you’re likely to enjoy for long before moving on to something else. And in the meantime, the 888MB file size is going to be hogging space on your Nintendo Switch despite the game having an extremely simple and unimpressive presentation that absolutely does not justify that bloated file size.
Grab LabPuzzle / ArcadeC
tl;drGrab Lab is a Puzzle game with Arcade sensibilities where your character keeps walking forward until you use a grappling hook to rappel to the opposite side of the room. As a puzzle game, it works okay, but doesn’t really do anything especially novel or interesting.
I Wanna FlyArcadeC
tl;drI Wanna Fly is a Mobile-style One-Button Arcade game where you press the button to dodge things on the screen and collect coins. The core gameplay is compelling, but marred by controls that move your character too quickly up and down and are too unforgiving if you hit the edges of the screen. Not a terrible game, but there are better options out there.
IHUGUArcadeC
tl;drIHUGU is an Arcade-style game with a simple premise – you’re greeting a line of various characters one at a time with a ticking clock. You must hug each of them that you have not already hugged before. That’s it.
Jumping Joe! and FriendsArcadeC
tl;drJumping Joe! and Friends is an Arcade-style game where you simply jump up to the left or the right. It works as a time-waster, but lacks any depth or compelling features to keep you playing for more than a few minutes before moving on.
Mon AmourArcadeC
tl;drMon Amour is an Arcade-style game like Flappy Bird that has players floating across the screen to kiss girls. The presentation here is great – lighthearted and funny. Unfortunately, the gameplay is far too unforgiving, and that saps the fun out of the experience.
Risky RescueArcadeC
tl;drRisky Rescue is an Arcade-style game where you’re rescuing stranded people using a helicopter with awkward controls. It plays well enough, but there isn’t anything especially interesting here, save for a terrible soundtrack.
Timberman VSArcade / Party GameC
tl;drTimberman VS is an Arcade/Party Game where you’re using two buttons to chop at the left or right side of a tree while avoiding falling branches. It’s an okay multiplayer time waster, but not much more than that.
Yellow FinsArcadeC
tl;drYellow Fins is an Arcade-style time-waster where you’re pushing one button to move your character down, and releasing it to make it easier to move up hills, trying to gain height and speed. Compared to the free smartphone games with similar gameplay, this game brings nothing new or interesting to the table. It’s fine, but does nothing notable, and even does a few things slightly worse than similar games.
Line Color WorldArcadeC-
tl;drLine Color World is a simple family-friendly mobile-style one-button Arcade game where players hold down one button to move a box through an obstacle course, trying to time your press to avoid the obstacles. There’s nothing surprising or exciting here, and while there are a few minor issues with things like the game’s camera, for the most part there isn’t anything extremely bad here either. In the end, this is just a mediocre time-waster. Take from that what you will.
Odium to the CoreArcadeC-
tl;drOdium to the Core is a game where you use one button to raise or lower a spiky eyeball’s trajectory through a series of twisting corridors. It looks good, but I think the changing perspective works against the gameplay and the controls are too sluggish.
Poosh XLArcadeC-
tl;drPoosh XL is a single-button Arcade-style game where players use a single button-press to propel their circle through a neon-lit gauntlet of obstacles, trying to avoid touching anything. While the core concept here is great, the way this game makes multiple fluctuating factors all tie to a single button press takes far too much control away from the player and makes it feel like success or failure in this game is too dependent on luck. As a result, this game is too frustrating to recommend.
SurfingersArcadeC-
tl;drSurfingers is a simple game where you’re moving a surfer up and down on waves to dodge obstacles and match the level of the next wave. It has a great presentation, but is overly difficult to the point that it saps the fun out of the game.
Switchy RoadArcadeC-
tl;drSwitchy Road is a simple mobile-style 2-button Arcade game where players cycle an object through one of three shapes to fit through gates as they automatically approach. It’s an okay time waster for a very short time, but it’s bare-bones and there’s nothing compelling or memorable about it.
Tap SkatersArcadeC-
tl;drTap Skaters is an Arcade-style game where you’re moving down an endless series of tilted platforms, judging when to move based on the direction they’re tilted. It’s simple, repetitive, and not really as addictive as you’d want for a game like this.
Twist & Switch BundleCompilation / ArcadeC-
tl;drTwist & Switch Bundle is a Compilation of two simple mobile-style Arcade games, Switchy Road and Twister Road. Both of these games work and aren’t terrible, but aren’t good, noteworthy, or even memorable, either. For a pair of time-wasters on Nintendo Switch, you could do worse, but you could also do so much better.
Twister RoadArcadeC-
tl;drTwister Road is an Endless Runner-style Arcade game like Temple Run, where you’re jumping a ball left and right to avoid gaps in an endless tube. It’s not horrible, but it’s repetitive and you’re seen pretty much all the game has to offer in the first few seconds.
Bouncy BobArcade / PlatformerD+
tl;drBouncy Bob is a game where players use a single button to make Bob jump around to avoid enemies. It’s a decent concept, but in practice it just isn’t very fun.
Cake LaboratoryArcadeD+
tl;drCake Laboratory is an Arcade-style game where you’re building a tower of cakes while trying to keep them from toppling over. The game looks pretty good, but it is sadly also absurdly easy and completed within a half hour, leaving little reason to come back to it again. It’s not worth bothering with.
DiggermanArcadeD+
tl;drDiggerman is a arcade-style game where all you do is dig down to the left or right, and it’s got the formula for a decent time-waster except it’s in far too much of a hurry to make you die from a power meter that depletes far too quickly. This game had potential, but as-is, it’s just frustrating.
Hardway PartyArcadeD+
tl;drHardway Party is a two-button Arcade-style game where you’re laying down sections of road on islands before they’re used by an oncoming car. Unfortunately, the game’s challenge curve is absurdly steep, and the game just isn’t fun to play.
Falling Elevator – Hyper Casual Demolish Escape Survival GameArcadeD
tl;drFalling Elevator is a single-button Arcade-style game where players hold a button to put the brakes on a falling elevator to time it so the elevator can pass obstacles on the way down. This is a low-effort asset flip, with simple gameplay, terrible level design, and unimpressive visuals. Do not waste money on this game.
Kawaii Deathu DesuArcadeD
tl;drKawaii Deathu Desu is an Arcade-style game where players violently slice up crazed fans of a pop idol version of Death. It’s a clever concept with a great presentation, but the gameplay consists of nothing but button-mashing. This game is a massive disappointment.
No ThingArcadeD
tl;drNo Thing is an Endless Runner-style Arcade game where you’re turning 90 degrees left and right to navigate a looping course without falling off, with a somewhat off-putting retro-futuristic VR-esque presentation. This game is simple and repetitive and ugly, and I see little reason for anyone to bother with it.
Fly CatArcadeF
tl;drFly Cat is a single button mobile-style Arcade game that’s clearly trying to copy Flappy Bird. And as terrible as Flappy Bird was, somehow Fly Cat manages to be worse, with more claustrophobic, stupidly difficult levels, yet without any significant amount of added variety. Don’t buy this game.

.

Pinball

GameGenreGrade
Pinball FX3Compilation / PinballA-
tl;drPinball FX3 is a free-to-play Compilation that includes two free Pinball tables, Sorcerer’s Lair and Fish Tales, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. This is a well-crafted collection of Pinball games, and I think it’s the best of the free-to-play offerings. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free. And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as there are on other platforms (no Marvel content? What gives!?).
Star Wars PinballCompilation / PinballA-
tl;drStar Wars Pinball is a collection of various digital Pinball tables Zen Pinball has released over the last decade, collected together and joined into a cohesive whole. The amount of value here for the $30 price tag is phenomenal, with some really excellent table designs, great gameplay, a fantastic presentation, and plenty of options and extra content. While there are a few tweaks that could still be made to improve the experience even more, overall this is one of the greatest Pinball games ever made, and if you enjoy Pinball and have a Switch, you need to have this game.
Pinball FXCompilation / PinballB+
tl;drPinball FX, like its predecessor Pinball FX3, is a free-to-play Compilation, this time including three free Pinball tables: Sorcerer’s Lair, Fish Tales, and Wild West Rampage. It’s a solid, polished game and it’s nice to get three tables at no cost, but the lack of compatibility with past DLC is disappointing, and otherwise this seems like little more than a rehash. If you enjoy Pinball, it’s still worth getting because there’s some great gameplay here at no cost, but it’s still hard not to be at least a bit disappointed.
Pinball MCompilation / PinballB+
tl;drPinball M is a free-to-play Pinball game with a focus on tables with an M rating, usually based on a Horror theme. The gameplay is excellent, but it’s really the presentation that sets this game apart as something unique among numerous other Pinball games on Nintendo Switch.
Stern Pinball ArcadeCompilation / PinballB-
tl;drStern Pinball Arcade is a free-to-play Compilation that includes one free Pinball table, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free (unless you also own The Pinball Arcade, which contains the same free table). And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as were previously available.
The Pinball ArcadeCompilation / PinballB-
tl;drPinball Arcade is a free-to-play Compilation that includes one free Pinball table, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free. And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as were previously available.
Zombie Rollerz: Pinball HeroesPinballB-
tl;drZombie Rollerz is a family-friendly Pinball game with Tower Defense elements, where players must use a pinball to protect their ballista from an invading horde of zombies. This game takes a lot of liberties with the genre’s typical formula, and some of these experimental elements work better than others, but this is overall an enjoyable spin on Pinball that’s worth a try.
JALECOlle Famicom Ver. Pinball QuestCompilation / Pinball / RPGC+
tl;dr Pinball Quest is a Compilation of multiple Pinball tables, including one that’s extended into a full RPG-style quest. There are issues with the game’s physics and punishing late-game difficulty, but it’s still a fun and unique combination of its respective genres, and this release includes a surprisingly good amount of extra features. This won’t be for everyone, but players curious about the interesting combination of elements may want to try it.
JetpinPinballC
tl;drJetPin is a Pinball game where you’re trying to propel your ball up one massive cavern, trying to outpace a rising water level. It’s a great concept that’s paired with a nice presentation, but unfortunately it’s hard to enjoy this game due to the game’s unpredictable physics and poor level design. If you’re a fan of Pinball games, you may want to give this a look, but most are better off sticking with more polished entries in the genre.
Pinball Big SplashPinballC-
tl;drPinball Big Splash is a family-friendly sea life-themed Pinball game. This is a decent table with some good animation, but unfortunately the decoration obscured the table and there are some other issues that make this table less fun than it could be. It’s not a horrible Pinball game, but you have better options.
Senran Kagura Peach BallPinballD
tl;drSenran Kagura Peach Ball is a Pinball game where players hit a ball at well-endowed catgirls, bunny-girls and the like who are lounging on the table, with the game clearly designed around enticing players to ogle the lovingly-rendered and well-animated girls (but stopping just short of any X-rated content). Unfortunately, this game is constantly pushing its terrible story at you, the pinball physics are terrible, there are effectively only two tables, and the $40 price tag is just absurd. Also, the sexy content here is enough to make the game feel awkward without being truly arousing. If you want a good pinball game, there are many better options. If you want something sexy, just go watch some porn. This game fails at both.
Arcade Archives PinballPinballF
tl;drThe Arcade version of Nintendo’s Pinball is even worse than the Nintendo Entertainment System version, and in fact it’s possibly the worst Pinball game I’ve ever played. Do not buy it.
