Nintendo Switch Reviews: Auto-Runners

Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in these genres, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.

  1. Side-Scrolling Auto-Runner
  2. Auto-Runner (Other)

Side-Scrolling Auto-Runner

GameGenreGrade
WunderlingAuto-RunnerA-
tl;drWunderling is an Auto-Runner that has players in the role of a Goomba-like creature hunting down this game’s stand-in for Mario. The concept here is clever, and the story surrounding it even more so, but what’s really fantastic about this game is its excellent level design and well-crafted gameplay. If you enjoy Platformers, Wunderling is definitely a game you should try.
Crazy BMX WorldCompilation / Auto-RunnerB+
tl;drCrazy BMX World is a Compilation of the family-friendly Auto-Runner games Bike Rider DX, Bike Rider Dx2: Galaxy, and the previously Japan-only Bike Rider DX3: Time Rider. This Compilation frustratingly forces players to unlock all of its games, doesn’t support Pro Controllers, and lacks the earlier releases’ DLC. However, at $3, this is still an outstanding bargain of a package that contains simple but compelling Auto-Runner gameplay, and anyone who enjoys this sort of game or wants a fun but simple time-waster on the cheap would do well to pick this game up.
Be Brave, BarbAuto-RunnerB
tl;drBe Brave, Barb is a side-scrolling Auto-Runner with light Puzzle-Platformer elements where players maneuver an anthropomorphic potted cactus plant who can go off the sides of platforms and change her gravity to reflect this change in direction. It’s a clever game mechanic that the game makes good use of in its excellent level design, even if the core gameplay is a bit too simple. And on top of everything, this game has an adorable presentation with a really lovable protagonist. Platformer fans looking for something a bit different should definitely try this one out.
Bit.Trip RunnerAuto-Runner / Music-RhythmB
tl;drBit.Trip Runner is an Auto-Runner that incorporates Music-Rhythm elements for a wonderful audiovisual experience that compels you to keep trying even after failing. Which you will do repeatedly, as this game is unforgiving of mistakes. The high challenge level may put off some players, but this game is nevertheless one of the highlights of its genre, even still to this day.
KoloroAuto-RunnerB
tl;drKoloro is an Auto-Runner about a girl transformed into a square wall-jumping back and forth in a surprisingly massive number of well-designed levels, with some great co-op levels to play as well. If you’re looking for a simple, challenging, well-designed Platformer, this game is absolutely worth a look.
Minit Fun RacerAuto-RunnerB
tl;drMinit Fun Racer is an old-fashioned Arcade-style Auto-Runner that plays out like an obstacle course with some “Roguelite” elements. You likely won’t get more than an hour or so out of this game, but for the low price of $3 it manages to be enjoyable enough while it lasts to worth the price, and the pledge that all earnings from the game will go to charity makes it that much easier to give it a try.
Top RunAuto-Runner / Action-PlatformerB
tl;drTop Run is an Auto-Runner with Action-Platformer elements that has some really excellent arcade-style gameplay and a great 80s-inspired motif with a killer soundtrack. The game is a bit shallow and repetitive, but it succeeds at what it’s aiming to do, and is an overall fun arcadey experience.
Atomik: RunGunJumpGunAuto-Runner / Action-PlatformerB-
tl;drAtomik is an Auto-Runner with Action-Platformer elements where players use a chain gun to alternately blast away obstacles or propel themselves up into the air. It’s super-challenging, and I would’ve liked the player to have more agency, but overall this is a fast-paced, fun, adrenaline-fueled take on the genre that’s well worth playing.
Chalk Dash CarnivalAuto-Runner / Platformer / Party GameB-
tl;drChalk Dash Carnival is a game that’s basically two different games in one. There’s one game that uses traditional controls, and it’s terrible, with sluggish movement and gameplay that has you dying a lot to unavoidable obstacles. However, when using the touchscreen in portable mode, this becomes a surprisingly decent, if a bit simple, game that has you drawing platforms and barriers to protect a character and guide them to an exit. For that mode alone, this game is worth a try.
Runner3Auto-RunnerB-
tl;drRunner3 is an Auto-Runner that is the third game in the Bit.Trip Runner series. This game features some wildly imaginative visuals, along with fairly standard gameplay for the genre, complete with a high difficulty level that spikes at irregular intervals. If you’re looking for a challenging Platformer, this game may be just what you’re looking for, but most will probably find this too frustrating for their tastes.
Super Meat Boy ForeverAuto-RunnerB-
tl;drSuper Meat Boy Forever is a sequel of sorts to the original game that takes its brand of challenging gameplay into the realm of the Auto-Runner, with mixed results. The presentation and moment-to-moment level design is still absolutely superb, with this game doing some wildly creative things with its simple two-button control scheme. However, that same control scheme limits the player’s utility to tackle the game’s difficult challenges, and the much-touted randomized level design only really succeeds at hiding content that would be better off presented in a more traditional, linear fashion. Ultimately, this game’s good qualities still make Super Meat Boy Forever worth a look, even if the flaws definitely detract from the experience.
Super One More JumpAuto-RunnerB-
tl;drSuper One More Jump is an Auto-Runner that incorporates a shifting gravity element that has players trying to anticipate how their jumps will re-orient as they pass between and around platforms. There’s some good puzzle potential here, and a healthy amount of options, but mostly this just ends up playing like any other challenging endurance-focused Auto-Runner, with a gimmick that doesn’t shake things up nearly as much as you might hope.
Aerial_Knight’s Never YieldAuto-RunnerC
tl;drAerial_Knight’s Never Yield is a mediocre Auto-Runner with a fantastic presentation. The visuals are slick, the soundtrack phenomenal, the gameplay is fundamentally flawed, and the game overall is completed within a span of a few hours. While it’s not terrible, there are better entries in the genre and games that cost less.
Croc’s World RunAuto-RunnerC
tl;drCroc’s World Run is an Auto-Runner that pairs the shameless rip-off of Super Mario Bros. of the three numbered Croc’s World games with gameplay that’s a shameless rip-off of Super Mario Run. Ironically, it’s the most change this series has ever seen, but it’s still an unoriginal and uninspired game that does nothing to set itself apart.
O-Void: Console EditionAuto-RunnerC
tl;drO-Void is an Auto-Runner that has you constantly moving forward in a circle as the level’s geometry is created in front of you. The presentation here is minimalist but not bad, and there’s even some variety in the challenges the levels throw at you. Unfortunately, it feels like all of this game’s challenge comes from poor gameplay and the game design making it difficult to see what’s going on. That’s rarely fun, and as a result I can’t recommend this game.
Run Sausage Run!Auto-RunnerC
tl;drRun Sausage Run! is a side-scrolling Auto-Runner where players try to get an anthropomorphic sausage to safety. This game has one good idea, and that is that one button does two things – it speeds you up and makes you duck underneath high obstacles. Unfortunately, it does nothing with this gimmick, and in fact the randomized levels lack any kind of structure at all. This isn’t a terrible game, but it’s not a very good one either.
DeadlingsAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drDeadlings is an Auto-Runner where players command various zombies through levels full of death traps. The presentation here isn’t very appealing, and the gameplay is overly frustrating and unforgiving. Most will be better off skipping it.
Geki Yaba Runner Anniversary EditionAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drGeki Yaba Runner is an Auto-Runner where players take the role of a gnome collecting socks. This game has a few decent design ideas, but these are far outweighed by the terrible controls. Skip this one.
Kid TrippAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drKid Tripp is an Auto-Runner with a bright, nostalgic presentation and a frustratingly hard difficulty level. Unless you like punishingly difficult Auto-Runners, this game isn’t for you.
Magical Girl DashAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drMagical Girl Dash is a side-scrolling Auto-Runner where players take the role of said Magical Girl as she fights invading catlike aliens to return Earth’s stolen sweets. While this concept and the game’s old-school presentation are delightful, it doesn’t make up for unforgiving gameplay and terrible button assignments that the game won’t let you change. I recommend you skip this one.
Summer CatchersArcade / Auto-RunnerC-
tl;drSummer Catchers is an Arcade-style game with Auto-Runner elements that has you using power-ups to get your speeding wooden car past obstacles. Unfortunately, both the power-ups and obstacles are randomized, leading to a lot of deaths due to that randomization. And while the presentation here is absolutely delightful, it doesn’t make up for gameplay that just isn’t fun.
Watermelon BlocksAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drWatermelon Blocks is an Auto-Runner where the character, pickups, and stages are all made of watermelon. Beyond that, there’s nothing all that interesting or original here. Skip this one.
ZikSquareAuto-Runner / Music Creation ToolC-
tl;drZikSquare is a Music Creation Tool that allows you to play the tracks you create in an Auto-Runner-style game. It’s a clever idea, but the music creator isn’t very user-friendly and has frustrating controls, and the game only includes 15 pre-made tracks, and has no ability to share tracks with other players, leaving the Auto-Runner starving for content. Good concept, poor execution.
Joe Jump Impossible QuestAuto-RunnerD+
tl;drJoe Jump is an Auto-Runner with a frustratingly hard difficulty level and not much else going for it. Unless you like punishingly difficult Auto-Runners, this game isn’t for you.
AstrorunAuto-RunnerD
tl;drAstrorun is a side-scrolling Auto-Runner that has you using different kinds of gas clouds to reach a green gem at the end of each level. This game’s poor gameplay, poor design choices, and highly repetitive nature exemplify the worst qualities of the Auto-Runner genre, and as such I absolutely do not recommend it.
Crayon Shinchan The Storm Called Flaming Kasukabe Runner!!Auto-RunnerD
tl;drCrayon Shinchan The Storm Called Flaming Kasukabe Runner!! is a pretty straightforward Auto-Runner with a terrible presentation, an ear-wrenching soundtrack, and a price tag that’s way too high for what’s on offer here. Fans of the franchise may like it, but everyone else should stay far, far away.
Knight TerrorsAuto-RunnerD
tl;drKnight Terrors is a runner-style game with not much more going for it beyond its retro-style presentation, and even that fails to hit the mark when it comes to nostalgia.
Never StopAuto-RunnerD
tl;drNever Stop is a Auto-Runner-style game with simple, boring graphics and gameplay that doesn’t give you enough time to respond to oncoming obstacles, nor enough control over your jumps. Skip it.
Peasant KnightAuto-RunnerD-
tl;drPeasant Knight is a runner-style game with a ridiculously hard challenge level and not a lot going for it. It seems like it was designed specifically to frustrate players. If that’s the case, it worked with me.

Auto-Runner (Other)

GameGenreGrade
Extreme Speed Bundle Go! Fish Go! Adrenaline Rush, Jet Ski RushCompilation / Auto-RunnerB-
tl;dr Extreme Speed Bundle is a Compilation of three family-friendly over-the-shoulder-style Auto-Runner games: Adrenaline Rush – Miami Drive, Go! Fish Go!, and Jet Ski Rush. While Jet Ski Rush isn’t very good, the other games are decent entries in their genre, and this bundle is a decent deal, especially if you catch it on sale. Fans of this genre may want to pick up this package.
Go! Fish Go!Auto-RunnerB-
tl;drGo! Fish Go! Is an Auto-Runner in the style of Temple Run, and for a $2 game it does a pretty good job with the genre, with nice fast-paced cartoony visuals and some solid “let me just give this one more try” gameplay. It’s a tad frustrating that your character’s movement lags behind your controls, making for occasional deaths that don’t feel like they’re your fault. However, overall this is a decent time-waster.
Super Glitch DashFirst-Person Auto-RunnerB-
tl;drSuper Glitch Dash is a family-friendly First-Person Auto-Runner where players avoiding obstacles and collecting pickups in a futuristic corridor as it is constructed in front of them. This game doesn’t do too much out of the norm for the genre, and its price seems a bit high, but otherwise this is a decent representation of this style of game, and if you’re looking for a decent Auto-Runner this should suffice.
Corridor ZAuto-Runner / HorrorC+
tl;drCorridor Z is an Auto-Runner that depicts the action from in front of a character running from a horde of zombies in a school and trying to toss debris in their way as it comes into view. It’s not a bad entry in the genre, but the view does give players less time to react, and the game still suffers the repetition that many of this genre’s games fall prey to.
Om Nom: RunAuto-RunnerC+
tl;drOm Nom: Run is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner starring the little green creature from the Cut the Rope series. As games in this genre go, this game works well enough and is reasonably polished, but it doesn’t really do anything noteworthy to set itself apart. If you’re looking for an Auto-Runner you’ll probably be satisfied with this, but I doubt you’ll be ecstatic about it.
Coin RushAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drCoin Rush is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner, and it is a competent but simple and repetitive entry in the genre that doesn’t have any major flaws, but it also does nothing interesting or exceptional. Players looking for an Auto-Runner on Nintendo Switch have better alternatives than this.
Jet Ski RushAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drJet Ski Rush Is a family-friendly Auto-Runner in the style of Temple Run, and everything this game does well it copied off of Go! Fish Go!, and in many ways it is a worse game than its predecessor. Worse controls, worse visuals, less variety, steeper difficulty curve. If you want an Auto-Runner just like this but better, just stick with Go! Fish Go!
Om Nom: Run 2Auto-Runner / RacingC-
tl;drOm Nom: Run 2 is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner starring the little green creature from the Cut the Rope series. This game adds a lot more variety over the first game, but forces you into three-round races making for required repetition against cheating AI opponents. This largely outweighs all the improvements this game features, and makes this game an overall worse experience.
Pirates: All Aboard!Compilation / Top-Down Auto-Runner / Arcade / Party GameC-
tl;drPirates: All Aboard! Is a Compilation of a single-player Top-Down Auto-Runner where players move a ship through obstacles, and a multiplayer Arcade-style Party Game where players navigate their ships trying to sink each other. Both modes are bland and uninspired, and the single-player mode is even worse due to an unforgiving challenge level and poor hit detection. In the end, this game (or pair of games) isn’t without some enjoyment to be had, but you’re much better off getting something else instead.
Super Box Delivery: Beyond the HorizonAuto-RunnerC-
tl;drSuper Box Delivery is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner where players drive a vehicle collecting and dropping off packages. The graphics in this game are surprisingly good, but the music is absolutely terrible, and the terrible turning controls ruin any fun this game could provide. You have better options than this on the Nintendo Switch.
Dead Fun Pack: Aliens and Penguins Strike AgainCompilation / Auto-Runner / ArcadeD+
tl;drDead Fun Pack is a compilation of two games – a terrible Auto-Runner, and a decent Wack-A-Mole game. There’s just not much here to make this package worthwhile.
War TitansAuto-Runner / ArcadeD+
tl;drWar Titans is a game that combines Auto-Runner and Arcade Game elements with gameplay that has you transforming back and forth from a mech to a car on a road filled with enemies. This fun concept is ruined by tedious, repetitive gameplay and horrible loading times. Don’t bother with this disappointment of a game.
OrbitblazersFuturistic Racing / Auto-RunnerD
tl;drOrbitblazers is a Futuristic Racing Game that plays more like an Auto-Runner, and while it delivers a clean presentation with a great sense of speed, it’s lacking in multiple areas, the worst being its unresponsive controls. The result is a game that’s not worth playing.
Ultimate RunnerAuto-RunnerD
tl;drUltimate Runner is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner where players control a character running from cannibals trying to cook them for dinner. Apart from the dated racism and an absolutely insulting $20 price tag, this game has nothing to offer that you can’t get in countless other Auto-Runners. Skip it.
