Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in this genre, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.
Roguelike
| Game | Genre | Grade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch Edition | Top-Down Roguelike / Music-Rhythm | A | |
tl;drCrypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch Edition is a phenomenal mash-up of the Roguelike and Music-Rhythm genres with a great soundtrack and game design that makes it all too tempting to dance your way back into the dungeon for another punishing attempt at getting just a little farther. | |||
| Dead Cells | Action-Platformer Roguelike | A | |
tl;drDead Cells is an action-platformer Roguelike that shines as a great example of all of those elements. It’s damn hard, but always compels you to try to get a little farther after each time you die, and the presentation is a wonderful companion to the likes of the Castlevania series. | |||
| Hades | Action / Roguelike | A | |
tl;drHades is an Action-packed isometric Roguelike that has you fighting through hordes of enemies with mix-and-match enhancements gifted to you by a cast of Greek gods, with this game’s mythological cast all superbly written and impeccably voice-acted. This game’s marriage of great storytelling, great action, and great mix of Roguelike elements that all tie into each other makes for a phenomenal game. Do not miss it. | |||
| Hades II | Action / Roguelike | A | |
tl;drHades II is an excellent follow-up to its predecessor, a fine Action Roguelike with an absolute ton of content, and that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while changing things enough that this feels like a very different sort of game while still fitting in with the original. The Nintendo Switch version is visually the ugliest way to play the game, but it still plays perfectly fine, and if you’re looking to play a truly excellent Action game on the go, this is well worth picking up. | |||
| Moonlighter | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG / Management Sim | A | |
tl;drMoonlighter is an experience somewhere in between a game like Zelda and a game like Stardew Valley, where you balance dungeon raids and shop management. What that amounts to is an addictive experience that’s greater than the sum of its parts, and a game that should be played by fans of either genre. | |||
| A Robot Named Fight | Metroidvania / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drA Robot Named Fight is a combination of a Metroidvania that is very clearly trying to be like Super Metroid, and a Roguelike with randomized level design, permadeath, and the gradual unlocking of upgrades. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of Super Metroid, but it’s still an engaging experience that fans of the genre should definitely check out. | |||
| Backpack Hero | Roguelike / Turn-Based RPG / Management Simulation | A- | |
tl;drBackpack Hero is a game that combines Roguelike, Turn-Based RPG, and Management Simulation elements, with a strong emphasis on organizing equipment in your backpack for the most effective results in battle. The way this game takes a classic RPG mechanic and expands on it to make it such a major element of the gameplay here is absolutely inspired. There are a few areas where this game could do with a bit more work, but overall this game is an absolute delight, and one that is definitely worth a look for fans of RPGs and Roguelikes. | |||
| Balatro | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drBalatro is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike that starts with a standard deck of poker cards that players gradually trade out and upgrade, aiming to keep racking up increasingly high scores to get as far as they can. While this game has a few rough spots, overall this is a brilliant mix of accessibility and exquisitely-crafted gameplay that puts it on par with the likes of Slay the Spire as the best this genre has to offer. This is an absolute must-play for any fans of this genre. | |||
| Ball x Pit | Arcade / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike / Simulation | A- | |
tl;drBall x Pit is a game that blends a wide variety of disparate genres, such as 2-Stick Shooter, Arcade, Roguelike, and Management Simulation, resulting in something that is wildly unique, offering a lot of depth, yet still highly-accessible and easy to pick up. Consider this a must-have if you’re craving originality, and something still worth checking out even if you just like some of the genres I named. | |||
| Children of Morta | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG | A- | |
tl;drChildren of Morta is a co-op Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays much like Diablo, but instead of loot, the game uses a Roguelike system that has players playing as different members of a family in a way that enhances both the game’s story and its mechanics. While there are areas that could do with improvement, on the whole this is a wonderful Action-RPG and a fantastic co-op experience that fans of the genre should absolutely give a try. | |||
| Dicey Dungeons | Roguelike / Board Game | A- | |
tl;drDicey Dungeons is a family-friendly Roguelike with Board Game elements that plays like a cross between Slay the Spire and Yahtzee. While perhaps not as deep as the former, Dicey Dungeons makes up for it by being highly accessible and easy to play, while still having a fair amount of depth. If you enjoy both genres this game is derived from, you’ll definitely want to give it a look. | |||
| Flinthook | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drFlinthook is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you fighting through room after room of space pirates with a blaster gun and a grappling hook. The game looks and sounds great, and the grappling hook makes for some really fun gameplay that makes just moving around a joy. It’s a tough game, and the Roguelike elements do have a few issues, but overall this is an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing. | |||
| Inscryption | Turn-Based Card Game / Roguelike / First-Person Graphic Adventure | A- | |
tl;drInscryption is a deck-building Card Game and Roguelike with a First-Person Graphic Adventure framing device with players finding themselves in a dark cabin with a mysterious, sinister dealer playing a card game about sacrificing animals. The card game itself is excellent, and the foreboding dark atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, that same darkness can make this game hard to see in handheld mode, and there are a few other minor frustrations here and there. However, in spite of these issues, Inscryption is a macabre delight, and it’s a game I highly recommend, especially to fans of similar games like Slay the Spire. | |||
| Ironcast | Unlimited Pattern Puzzle / Turn-Based RPG / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drIroncast is a combination of Puzzle, Turn-Based RPG, and Roguelike elements that puts players in the role of an upper-class mech operator in an alternate version of Victorian England at war with France. This is a game that requires players to be mindful of its various interconnected systems as they engage in battles, with some really excellent strategic elements that make the game extremely engaging. There is definitely room here for improvement, but overall this game is a blast to play, and well worth giving a try. | |||
| Little Noah: Scion of Paradise | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drLittle Noah is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements (on the “Roguelite” side of the spectrum) where players fight through dungeons as a young woman whose attacks consist of “Lilliput” creatures collected along the way and assigned by the player into their own custom attack combos. This makes for an extremely varied and enjoyable combat system, in an overall polished, appealing, fun and original take on the genre. If you like Roguelikes, this is absolutely a game you should try. | |||
| Neon Abyss | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drNeon Abyss is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that feels a lot like the designers were going for a side-scrolling neon-lit Binding of Isaac, and they largely hit their mark spot-on. Only a few technical flaws keep this game from reaching the same height as that classic Roguelike, but it’s still a phenomenal Action game. | |||
| NeuroVoider | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drNeuroVoider is a combination of Two-Stick Shooter and Roguelike that has you fighting an army of robots, stealing their parts, and then using them to upgrade your own capabilities. It’s an incredibly fun game with great co-op, a fantastic presentation, and tons of variety and customization. The randomized level design and enemy AI could have used a bit of work, but on the whole this is an absolutely fantastic game that should be owned by anyone who enjoys a good Action game. | |||
| Nowhere Prophet | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drNowhere Prophet is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike that has players in the role of a leader of a convoy in a Mad Max-esque post-apocalypse. This game has progression somewhat like Slay the Spire and combat closer to Hearthstone, with some clever risk and reward mechanics and resource management elements. While this game isn’t quite as easy to get into as Slay the Spire, it is nevertheless an outstanding entry in the genre with a killer soundtrack, and fans of the genre should consider it a must-buy. | |||
| Rogue Legacy 2 | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drRogue Legacy 2 is an Action-Platformer and Roguelike about a family line trying to explore the depths of a dangerous shape-shifting castle. This game improves on the first game in virtually every way, while keeping what was great about the original game intact. There’s so much variety here, so many ways to upgrade your characters, and countless new elements that make different character types even more distinct and add Metroidvania elements to the gameplay. An absolute must for anyone who enjoyed the first game, and well worth a try for anyone who enjoys Action-Platformers and Roguelikes. | |||
| Shovel Knight Dig | Platformer / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drShovel Knight Dig is a Platformer with strong Roguelike elements, tweaking the excellent Platformer gameplay of the original Shovel Knight and using it to have the player digging down into the earth in a Roguelike-style structure. This game captures much of what worked so well in the original Shovel Knight but recontextualizes it into a Roguelike experience, and for the most part this works brilliantly, though the high challenge level may put off fans of the original game. Still, if you’re not intimidated by a challenge, this is a superb game well worth playing. | |||
| Slay the Spire | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drSlay the Spire is a game that combines a Card Battle RPG with Roguelike elements for an experience that’s extremely addictive. The game is not without its frustrations, in particular how much the element of luck plays into your success. However, the combination of excellent gameplay and a good amount of variety make this a game that more than makes up for its shortcomings. | |||
| The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drThe Binding of Isaac is a Two-Stick Shooter Roguelike that places you in the role of a young child fighting grotesque monsters with his tears. It’s a lot of fun, but the roguelike elements can make any given playthrough very hit-and-miss, which can be frustrating. It’s still well worth playing, though. | |||
| Vampire Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drVampire Survivors is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players automatically attack, and must work their way through thousands of enemies while carefully selecting their upgrades. The game can seem a bit simple and repetitive at first, and the new 4-player co-op mode is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall this is a delightfully compelling Action game, and at $5 it’s an absolute steal. Definitely a must-have for Action fans. | |||
| 20XX | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;dr20XX is an Action-Platformer with strong Roguelike elements. It is obviously very strongly inspired by the Mega Man series and especially Mega Man X, although the Roguelike elements definitely make this distinct and different enough to stand on its own, albeit not without losing a few of the positive qualities of the Mega Man games while doing it. | |||
| 30XX | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;dr30XX is an Action-Platformer that’s a sequel to 20XX, and like that game, it gives players a Roguelike-style take on the classic Mega Man X series… but this time around, you can also opt to play the game much in the same way as the actual Mega Man games. Either way, this is an exceptionally well-crafted game that so perfectly imitates Mega Man-style gameplay that it’s better than everything that series has released in the past two decades. It’s just a shame the PC version’s level builder didn’t make it into the Nintendo Switch version of the game, but even without it this is an outstanding Action-Platformer. | |||
| 20XX / 30XX | Compilation / Action-Platformer / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;dr20XX / 30XX is a physical-only Compilation of the two named games plus 30XX’s DLC. Both games are excellent and worth playing, and this is a well-priced package, but if a physical release isn’t important to you, you’ll save more money just by buying the individual games when they go on sale, so do that instead. | |||
| Artifact Seeker | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drArtifact Seeker is a game with Arcade and Roguelike elements that’s similar to Vampire Survivors, with a bit of Slay the Spire tossed in for good measure. It’s a great combination that adds depth to the fun “Bullet Heaven” gameplay, though the terrible menu interface and at times unclear information can be frustrating. Still, this is a great addition to this genre that’s definitely worth trying if you’re looking for a new Vampire Survivors-alike. | |||
| Cobalt Core | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drCobalt Core is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike much like Slay the Spire, but it brings its own clever ideas to the genre, such as battling with spaceships consisting of different parts, and being able to build a deck using three different characters with their own specialties. All of this is within a really endearing presentation. I have my issues with the game’s progression, but overall this is a fantastic addition to this genre, and fans of games like this will definitely want to play it. | |||
| Destropolis | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drDestropolis is a Two-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements where players try to survive for as long as they can while blasting away red geometric shapes. The game is simple and a tad repetitive, and the weapon overheating can be frustrating, but this is still a lot of fun packed into a small package, and players looking for an inexpensive, compelling 2-Stick Shooter with good co-op should find this to be a delightful distraction that keeps pulling them back for just one more run. | |||
| Dicefolk | Turn-Based RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drDicefolk is a Turn-Based RPG Roguelike game where players are managing a trio of monstrous “chimeras” as well as upgradeable dice that represent their potential moves in battle. There are some really clever game mechanics here, and while it’s not without its issues, overall this is an enjoyable and unique entry in the genre well worth playing. | |||
| Dreamscaper | Action-RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drDreamscaper is an Action-RPG and Roguelike where players fight monsters in the dreams of the protagonist, which are shaped by her memories. This game features solid gameplay and an excellent presentation, and while it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as Hades, it is still well-crafted enough that it’s worth checking out in its own right. | |||
| Enter the Gungeon | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drEnter the Gungeon is a two-stick shooter with roguelike elements that packs a lot of fun gameplay and a high difficulty level. An excellent game for fans of the genre looking for a challenge. | |||
| Fury Unleashed | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drFury Unleashed combines Action-Platformer, 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike elements into one great co-op package, with an added fourth-wall breaking “comic book” presentation. If a joyfully action-packed blend of testosterone and Roguelike sounds good to you, this game will not disappoint. | |||
| Galak-Z: The Void: Deluxe Edition | 2D Space Shooter / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drGalak-Z is a 2D Space Shooter with Roguelike elements. The game’s protagonist is a twerp, and the difficult controls may not appeal to everyone, but those who work to learn those controls will find this is a deep and rewarding game with excellent gameplay. | |||
| Indie Gems Bundle – Explosions Edition | Compilation / Bullet Hell Shmup / Roguelike / 2-Stick Shooter / Match-3 Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drIndie Gems Bundle – Explosions Edition is a Compilation of three Action-packed games, each of them ranging from good to great. If you’re a fan of Shmups and 2-Stick shooters, you’re bound to find something to love in this package, even if the savings over purchasing these games individually is minimal. | |||
| Inkulinati | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drInkulinati is a game that combines side-scrolling Turn-Based Strategy-RPG gameplay with Roguelike elements to create something pretty unique, that has players strategically moving anthropomorphic animals around on a battlefield while being mindful of resources. The controls are unnecessarily confusing, and the game does a poor job conveying information to the player, but despite these flaws this is a truly inspired Strategy-RPG that is absolutely worth playing. | |||
| Into the Breach | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drInto the Breach is a Strategy-RPG with Roguelike elements that simplifies the genre and has players focusing on just the strategy. It’s very difficult, but fans of the genre will find it to be an excellent challenge. | |||
| Loop Hero | Roguelike / RPG / Management Simulation | B+ | |
tl;drLoop Hero is a game that combines elements of the Roguelike, RPG, and Management Simulation genres into unique gameplay that has players changing the terrain on an endless loop a hero walks along fighting monsters. There are areas where the game could have done with a few adjustments, but overall this is a highly compelling and wildly original game well worth playing. | |||
| Peglin | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drPeglin is a game that mixes gameplay clearly inspired by Peggle with Roguelike elements, in the guise of an RPG. The blending of different gameplay elements here is outstanding, though it could do with a tutorial and more balanced level design, and it could stand to be a good deal longer. However, despite these flaws, this is a delightful game that Peggle fans and Roguelike lovers will both want to get their hands on. | |||
| PlateUp! | Party Game / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drPlateUp! is a family-friendly Arcade-style Party Game with Roguelike elements that is basically an off-brand Overcooked Roguelike. However, while it’s a bit repetitive and its online lobbies are empty, this is still a phenomenal local co-op game, and one that gives players opportunities the Overcooked games lack, like designing your restaurant’s layout. In the end, if you’re looking for a great game to play with friends, this is an outstanding choice. | |||
| Risk of Rain 2 + Risk of Rain 1 | Compilation / Roguelike / Third-Person Shooter / Action-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drRisk of Rain 2 + Risk of Rain 1 is a Compilation available only in physical form containing the two named games, both included on the cartridge. The first game is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements, while the second game brings the formula of the first game into 3D as a Third-Person Shooter. These games aren’t without their issues (particularly bullet sponge enemies), but they’re solid action games, and this Compilation is such a good bargain that I would argue that unless you insist on getting your games in digital form, you should absolutely get this package instead of buying either game separately. | |||
| Rogue Legacy | Action-Platformer Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drRogue Legacy is an action-platformer Roguelike that gives players a great sense of progression as they build up their family line with each attempt at exploring the cursed castle. The gameplay and presentation is a bit on the simple side, but the game manages to be charming and enjoyable regardless. Well worth giving a look. | |||
| Shogun Showdown | Roguelike / Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drShogun Showdown combines Roguelike game structure with side-scrolling Turn-Based Strategy-RPG gameplay in a feudal Japanese setting that stresses the importance of timing and positioning. It’s shorter than I’d like and the controls take come getting used to, but despite these issues, this is an excellent and refreshing take on both genres that’s absolutely worth a look for anyone who fancies themselves a combat tactician. | |||
| Sparklite | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drSparklite is a Top-Down Action-RPG Roguelike where players explore a shifting landscape, discovering landmarks and gradually building up their abilities. It’s a solid entry in the genre, although the start of the game is a bit frustrating. Once you move past that though, this game is a delight. | |||
| Void Scrappers | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drVoid Scrappers is a mix of Arcade-style gameplay with Roguelike mechanics in the “Bullet Heaven” style popularized by Vampire Survivors, with the theme this time being spaceships fighting hordes of enemy ships to collect scrap. To its credit, this game has a similar kind of compelling gameplay to Vampire Survivors that will keep bringing players back for just one more run, and although it has multiple issues that keep it from reaching that other game’s greatness, it’s different enough that it’s still worth getting in its own right. | |||
| W.A.N.D. Project | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drW.A.N.D. Project is an Arcade-style Roguelike in the “Bullet Heaven” style of game that Vampire Survivors pioneered, but it manages to separate itself from the pack with its gameplay that has you combining spell components on a flowchart-like grid to create your own custom attacks for your alien-fighting magical girl. I wish there were more content and even more ability to customize your character’s abilities, but overall this is an inspired take on the genre that anyone who enjoys this sort of game should absolutely check out. | |||
| Wildfrost | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drWildfrost is a Turn-Based Roguelike Card RPG where players must help their chosen hero fend off enemies in a frozen wasteland. It doesn’t offer quite enough agency or variety to surpass the likes of Slay the Spire, but it’s a delightful entry in the genre all the same, and one absolutely worth playing. | |||
| Abyss Seeker–What Do You See Deep in The Abyss | Top-Down 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drAbyss Seeker is a 2-Stick Shooter Roguelike that has players altering their magical attacks with upgrades they collect in each run. While this game has some gameplay mechanics in common with its predecessor Heaven Seeker, the more simplified gameplay actually works in its favor, and the rock-bottom $2 price makes this an easy game to recommend. If you’re looking for something cheap with some fun action, this is worth a look. | |||
| Black Future ’88 | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drBlack Future ‘88 is an Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike elements that has a fantastic presentation, a killer soundtrack, and some slick, fast-paced action. However, some players may feel frustrated by how the game is constantly rushing you, and the tiny, hard-to-read text will almost certainly frustrate you. Still, if you’re looking for a challenging Action game, Black Future ‘88 is well worth a try. | |||
| Castle Morihisa | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drCastle Morihisa is a deck-building Card-Based RPG Roguelike that is very clearly cribbing a lot of its notes directly from Slay the Spire, though it does change a few things and the mythological Japanese theme does help to set it apart. This game isn’t anywhere near as good as the game that so clearly inspired it, but it’s still an enjoyable entry in the genre worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for something as close as possible to Slay the Spire. | |||
| Crown Trick | Top-Down Dungeon-Crawler / Turn-Based RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drCrown Trick is a Top-Down Dungeon-Crawler that has players venturing into a world of nightmares with a talking crown. This is an all-around good entry in the genre, albeit one that’s not without its flaws and frustrations. If you like this sort of game, Crown Trick is well worth checking out. | |||
| Deflector | Action / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drDeflector is an Action Roguelike where players take the role of a test subject created to combat an organic virus. The gameplay here is solid, and this game’s use of elements of Bullet Hell Shmups, as well as its central deflection mechanic, help to set it apart from other games in the genre. That’s good, because Deflector can’t compete with the likes of Hades in terms of that game’s fluid and satisfying combat and wonderful story and characters. However, Deflector manages to be unique enough to be worth trying out despite this, especially if you’re a fan of this style of game. | |||
| Dig Dog | Platformer / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drDig Dog is a simple Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you playing as a dog digging through the Earth to get to a bone, avoiding enemies along the way. The game is fairly unforgiving, but still well worth playing thanks to how good the core gameplay is. | |||
| Everspace – Stellar Edition | Space Combat Game / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drEverspace is a Space Combat Roguelike game, where you’re flying a spaceship, fighting off enemies, dying, and then making another attempt at it with some of what you acquired on the previous run. The game’s core gameplay is good, and the Roguelike elements work well with it, but the game is repetitive and in great need of a better variety of environments and stuff to do. | |||
| Fights in Tight Spaces | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Card RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drFights in Tight Spaces is a game that combines Turn-Based Strategy-RPG, Card RPG, and Roguelike elements to create a game that is all about thoughtful, strategic decisions during a brawl with multiple opponents. The mindful combat in this game is superb, but at times it can be slow-paced, and mistakes in your deckbuilding snowball far too quickly. Meanwhile, the presentation has a good soundtrack, and the visuals are striking, but also visually-monotonous. This is a very good game, but one with significant flaws. | |||
| Geometry Survivor | Arcade / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drGeometry Survivor is an Arcade-style game and Roguelike clearly trying to copy the success of Vampire Survivors, but also copying the art style and gameplay mechanics of the Geometry Wars franchise. The result is a game that, while not quite on par with either of those inspirations, is nevertheless unique and enjoyable enough to be worth playing in its own right. | |||
| Griftlands | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drGriftlands is a Turn-Based Card RPG with Roguelike elements that bears a lot of similarities to Slay the Spire. By contrast, it offers a lot more nuance with its two-deck mechanic, variety of characters to befriend or oppose, and its focus on story. However, it suffers from doing a poor job conveying information to the player, and the controls are terrible. On balance, this is still a solid game that does multiple creative things with the genre, but it doesn’t come close to unseating the king. | |||
| Heroes of Hammerwatch – Ultimate Edition | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike / 2-Stick Shooter | B | |
tl;drHeroes of Hammerwatch is a Top-Down Action-RPG with Two-Stick Shooter mechanics that ditches the lighter Arcadey feel of the first game in favor of a Roguelike, and the change adds some welcome depth. It’s a shame that this game dropped the local co-op, and the changes to the gameplay put this game in direct competition with other games that I’d argue are superior. However, if you’re looking for a solid Roguelike Action-RPG, this one is still well worth your time. | |||
| Immortal Redneck | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drImmortal Redneck is an old-school FPS with Roguelike elements that add compelling depth to the otherwise simplistic gameplay. Fans of the FPS genre might find this a fun distraction. | |||
| Mech Armada | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drMech Armada is a Turn-Based Strategy and Roguelike that has players earning random mech parts in each run and combining them to make mechs to fight hordes of monsters. The controls are clunky and the visuals are far from impressive, but this game’s approach to the Strategy-RPG and Roguelike genres is enjoyable and unique enough to overlook its flaws. | |||
| Rising Hell | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drRising Hell is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that has players climbing a tower and ripping into demonic enemies with claws. This game’s metal-infused presentation and visceral combat are compelling, but the challenge level may be a bit too high for some, in part thanks to somewhat slow attacks and the automatic hellbreak ability. On balance, this game is well worth looking into if you’re up for a challenge and looking for a combat-focused Platformer. | |||
| Risk of Rain 2 | Third-Person Shooter / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drRisk of Rain 2 is a Third-Person Shooter with Roguelike elements that’s faithful to the first game while bringing its formula into the world of 3D. Overall I’d say this game is a marked improvement over the first game, with some really good action, although again I’m frustrated by the bullet sponge enemies. | |||
| Robobeat | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike / Music-Rhythm | B | |
tl;drRobobeat combines First-Person Shooter, Roguelike, and Music-Rhythm elements in gameplay that has to blasting away enemies in time with the beat. The gameplay can get a bit too hectic with a lot going on at once, and the Roguelike elements could stand to be more pronounced, but despite these issues the core gameplay remains enjoyable, and a nice change of pace for all of this game’s individual genres. | |||
| Stellar Interface | Shmup / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drStellar Interface is a Shmup with Roguelike elements, and while the Shmup side of things can get a bit samey and the random elements hinder the level design, the Roguelike elements really help to keep things interesting and make for a lot of potential fun. As a result, this is far from a perfect entry in the Shmup genre, but it’s fun and unique enough to be worth a look. | |||
| Steredenn: Binary Stars | Bullet Hell Shmup / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drSteredenn is a Bullet Hell Shmup that incorporates elements of Roguelikes into its game progression. The presentation here is phenomenal, with fantastic pixel art graphics and a great soundtrack, however, the randomized elements and some questionable design choices make for a game that’s even more difficult than the usual Shmup, making this a game mostly only the biggest fans of the genre will have the patience for. | |||
| Streets of Rogue | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drStreets of Rogue is a Top-Down Action-RPG Roguelike that gives players a few goals in each level and lets the player decide how to best go about completing those goals. When it works well, it’s fantastic to have so much freedom, though it feels like the game occasionally pushes players towards simple brute force violence, undermining that sense of freedom. Still, this is overall a fun game with a lot of variety. | |||
| The Swords of Ditto: Mormo’s Curse | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drThe Swords of Ditto is a fun riff on the Zelda formula that has you playing the reincarnated hero fighting the evil wizard in a more modernized world where the whole “reincarnated hero” thing has become old hat for everyone. It’s a clever idea that gets a great presentation here, but the actual gameplay itself can get a bit tedious at times. Still, the game is well worth playing for its constant originality. | |||
| UnderMine | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drUnderMine is an Action-RPG with Roguelike elements where players fight through hordes of enemies in a randomized mine, hunting for treasure and gradually building up their expendable succession of adventurers. It’s a solid Roguelike, but it can’t hold a candle to the likes of games like The Binding of Isaac, which it stands in the shadow of. Still, if you’re a fan of the genre, it should be worth a look. | |||
| Vinebound: Tangled Together | Arcade / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drVinebound is a family-friendly Arcade-style Roguelike in roughly the same style as Vampire Survivors, but with a focus on co-op play. These co-op elements are well-crafted and really help to set the game apart from others in the genre, and while I do think the game is a tad content-poor and the single-player gameplay seems like an afterthought, this is well worth getting for players looking for a solid co-op experience, especially with this game only setting you back $5. | |||
| City of Brass | First-Person Action | B- | |
tl;drCity of Brass is a First-Person Action game with Roguelike elements that has you using a sword and whip to slash your way through enemies and try to avoid traps in a shifting ancient Arabian city. The core gameplay here is good, but the Roguelike elements can be a bit frustrating. Still, those who don’t mind a challenge might find this game worthwhile. | |||
| Crying Suns | Real-Time Strategy / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drCrying Suns is a game that combines Real-Time Strategy and Roguelike, putting you in the role of a cloned admiral awakened to bring his galactic empire back from the brink of a mysterious calamity. The pacing here is pretty slow, the controls are awkward, the Strategy elements are a bit simple and the Roguelike elements are marred by the pacing, but despite these issues, this is still a pretty solid game that overall makes good use of its Strategy and Roguelike elements to craft a worthwhile experience for fans of those genres. | |||
| Cult of the Lamb | Action-RPG / Roguelike / Management Simulation | B- | |
tl;drCult of the Lamb is an Action-RPG with strong Roguelike and Management Simulation elements, in which players take the role of a lamb charged with managing a cult to worship an ancient deity, while heading out to gather resources and slaughter enemies. The presentation and Management Sim parts of this game are original and quite enjoyable, but the Action-RPG sections of the game are less successful thanks to issues with unclear hit detection and this game’s performance on Nintendo Switch. While there’s still plenty to enjoy here, I feel like there are other games that manage to do the individual elements of this game better, even if there’s nothing else that offers quite the same overall package. | |||
| EcoGnomix | Board Game / Roguelike / Management Simulation | B- | |
tl;drEcoGnomix is a game that combines Board Game, Roguelike, and Management Simulation elements in gameplay that’s primarily about sending small teams of gnomes into a mine to gather resources while fending off ravenous bats. There’s some really compelling and original gameplay here, but I feel like each of the main components of this game are flawed in some way, keeping the game from reaching its full potential. It’s still fun and original enough to be worth a look though, especially if you’re a fan of its individual genres. | |||
| Go Mecha Ball | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drGo Mecha Ball is a 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike with some 3D Platformer elements that has players taking on enemies using a mech suit that can transform into a ball. The action here is excellent, combining the genre with gameplay elements from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Unfortunately, some pretty nasty framerate issues on Nintendo Switch make this the worst version of the game. If at all possible, play this somewhere else. | |||
| Helvetii | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drHelvetii is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements, and while the Roguelike side of things is kinda’ half-baked, the Action-Platformer combat is good, making for an enjoyable game that’s worth trying out. | |||
| Monster Slayers | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drMonster Slayers is a game that combines a Card Battle RPG with Roguelike elements. It does a good job balancing player utility and the Roguelike elements, but unfortunately it stumbles when it comes to the way it presents information to the player, and the presentation feels pretty generic. | |||
| Ocean Keeper: Dome Survival Roguelike | Top-Down 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drOcean Keeper offers a unique blend of Top-Down 2-Stick Shooter gameplay, side-scrolling mining sequences, and Roguelike structure, and while each of these elements is flawed in some way, they come together to form something that’s fairly original and oddly compelling. There’s a lot of room for improvement here, but overall this is still well worth playing. | |||
| Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon | Falling Block Puzzle Game / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drShovel Knight Pocket Dungeon takes the popular indie game character and drops him in a fusion of the Falling Block Puzzle and Roguelike genres. The presentation here is solid, the game is polished, and the gameplay is clever and original… but some of the core elements of that gameplay feel tedious and keep this from being a truly compelling entry in the genre. Some fans of Shovel Knight, Puzzle games, and Roguelikes might enjoy it, but it just did not work for me. | |||
| The Flame in the Flood | Survival Adventure | B- | |
tl;drThe Flame in the Flood is a Survival Adventure where you raft down a flooded area scrounging through wreckage for supplies to stay alive. It’s punishingly difficult, but it’s a rewarding experience if you stick with it. | |||
| Volta-X | RPG / Real-Time Strategy / Roguelike | B- | |
tl;drVolta-X is a game that has you managing a team controlling a mech in a one-on-one battle, with gameplay that combines elements of RPGs and Real-Time Strategy games, with base building and Roguelike elements as well. The gameplay is fast-paced and chaotic, and will not appeal to everyone. However, if you are good at multitasking and enjoy a challenge, you may find this game to be refreshingly original and well worth a look. | |||
| Battlezone Gold Edition | Action / First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drBattlezone is a reboot of the arcade classic that has you driving a tank and blasting away enemies in a digital landscape. The Action elements here combine well with some Roguelike elements, and while the gameplay here has some small frustrations, this is overall a satisfying Action title. | |||
| Black Paradox | Bullet Hell Shmup / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drBlack Paradox is a Bullet Hell Shmup that has you flying a ship designed to look like a Delorean. The game has good gameplay, but the high difficulty and slow upgrade progression makes this a game only fans of the genre are likely to thoroughly enjoy. | |||
| Blazing Beaks | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drBlazing Beaks is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements with a cartoony pixel art presentation featuring anthropomorphic birds with guns. Unfortunately, the game’s high difficulty doesn’t really fall in line with the cartoony presentation, and the nice unique features the game has only add to that difficulty. Action fans looking for a challenge might enjoy this, but I did not. | |||
| Card-en-Ciel | Turn-Based Card RPG / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drCard-en-Ciel is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike loosely inspired by Mega Man Battle Network. There is some fun and creative gameplay here, but there are also a lot of confusing gameplay mechanics, pacing problems, and a mishmash of presentation elements that don’t always work well together. The result is a game that fans of this style of game may still want to try out, but that most players are better off skipping in favor of better-designed entries in the genre. | |||
| Caverns of Mars: Recharged | Arcade / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drCaverns of Mars: Recharged is an Arcade-style game with Roguelike elements inspired by the classic Atari PC game, though it takes multiple liberties with the gameplay in this successor. Many of these changes are great, and the risk-reward of trying to avoid taking damage while being mindful of dwindling fuel is excellent. It’s a shame that this strong gameplay is marred by a Roguelike mechanic that punishes you more than it helps you. As a result, this game is merely a decent game that seems like it could have been much better. | |||
| Couch Co-Op Bundle Vol. 2 | Compilation / Shmup / Roguelike / Action-Platformer | C+ | |
tl;drThe Couch Co-Op Bundle Vol. 2 is a Compilation of Black Paradox, Bleed, Shikhondo – Soul Eater, and Vertical Drop Heroes HD. This is a decent selection of games with a modest discount, but there’s nothing to get super-excited about here. If you’re looking to fill out the co-op action games in your Nintendo Switch library you may want to give this bundle a shot, but don’t set your expectations too high. | |||
| Death Road to Canada | Action-RPG / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drDeath Road to Canada is an Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays like the Oregon Trail set in a zombie apocalypse. However, while the game does a great job giving players all kinds of unique twists and turns in their journey, the actual action itself is tedious and repetitive, which lets down a game that otherwise had lots of potential. | |||
| Going Under | Action / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drGoing Under is an Action Roguelike that puts you in the role of a low-level office worker sent into the dungeons below her tech company to slay monsters. This game has a unique presentation, some good office satire, and a lot of variety, but the combat is somewhat lacking and the weapon-breaking game element is frustrating. It’s still a decent Roguelike, but it comes nowhere close to challenging the likes of Hades. | |||
| Gonner2 | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drGoNNER2 is an Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike elements that, like the first game, is very odd, and has no intention of explaining any of what the heck is going on. This is certainly an improvement, with both the 2-Stick Shooter mechanics and multiplayer being significant additions. But in the end, this game still suffers from the same issues as its predecessor – this is a very niche game that’s just not welcoming to new players. | |||
| Guild of Ascension | Action-RPG / Strategy-RPG / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drGuild of Ascension is a game that combines Action-RPG, Strategy-RPG, and Roguelike elements in a game where you’re controlling two warriors fighting their way up a fantastical tower. The blending of different gameplay elements here is absolutely inspired, but unfortunately the game does little to build on that excellent potential, leaving this feeling repetitive and tiresome. It’s a shame this game wastes so much potential, and unless you’re curious to see something clever and different that can’t live up to that potential, you’re better off skipping this one. | |||
| Heaven Seeker – The Savior of This Cruel World | Top-Down 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drHeaven Seeker is a 2-Stick Shooter Roguelike that has players altering their magical attacks with upgrades they collect in each run. While it has its flaws, this isn’t a bad entry in the genre. unfortunately, being merely “not bad” hardly seems like enough when there are tons of better alternatives on the Nintendo Switch. I suggest playing one of those better games instead. | |||
| Maze Blaze | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drMaze Blaze is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements where players move through a neon-soaked maze with corridors that raise into view as they approach, giving the game a very distinctive visual look. Unfortunately, the slow walking speed, inability to change button assignments, and the way the maze-based level design conflicts with the 2-Stick Shooter gameplay all hold this game back, though it still has some positive qualities that may make some players want to give it a look despite these flaws. | |||
| Post Void | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drPost Void is a First-Person Shooter with Roguelike elements that takes the simple gameplay of classic retro First-Person Shooters, pushes players to blast through it at high speed with death always just seconds away, and gives it a surreal and garishly colorful presentation. The result is a game that will absolutely not appeal to everyone, but those who do enjoy it will find it unlike anything else out there. | |||
| Raspberry Mash | Roguelike Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drRaspberry Mash is a Top-Down Action game with Roguelike and 2-Stick Shooter elements. Unfortunately, while the melee in this game is really fun and visceral, the ranged weaponry is pretty terrible, and the way the game forces you to slow down to contend with ranged threats wrecks the game’s pacing. This is definitely not a bad entry in this genre, but there are just far too many other better games in this genre to waste your time with this one. | |||
| Risk of Rain | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drRisk of Rain is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that has some interesting ideas it brings to the genre, but ultimately it doesn’t quite meet its potential thanks to its poor AI and bullet sponge enemies. | |||
| Road Redemption | Arcade Racing / Action / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drRoad Redemption is a modern re-imagining of the classic game Road Rash, with players racing a motorcycle down a freeway and fighting off other bikers along the way. It’s a unique formula that’s made even better with modern visuals and Roguelike elements, but the way players are asked to multitask racing and fighting feels like it’s far too demanding for most players. As a result, this game is sure to have its appeal, but only to the narrow target audience of players who can manage this game’s balancing act. | |||
| Rogue Lords | Roguelike / Turn-Based RPG | C+ | |
tl;drRogue Lords is a Roguelike and Turn-Based RPG where players take the role of The Devil, sending out minions to spread fear and chaos in the human world. This game has some really clever mechanics and some outstanding character art, but slow pacing and some absolutely horrible performance issues mean that this game falls short of what it could have been, and even as-is this is a game that’s better on other platforms. | |||
| Sweet Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drSweet Survivors is a mix of Arcade-style gameplay with Roguelike mechanics in the “Bullet Heaven” style popularized by Vampire Survivors, with the theme this time being baristas delivering coffee while being mobbed by cats. The core gameplay is good, and there are a few interesting ideas here, but overall this still doesn’t measure up to Vampire Survivors. | |||
| The Persistence | First-Person Stealth / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drThe Persistence is a First-Person Stealth game with some Roguelike and minor Horror elements that has you controlling a series of clones trying to retake a spaceship from deformed clone zombies. The Roguelike elements are a nice touch, and some of the mechanics here are fairly unique within the Stealth genre, but the slow movement and sub-par combat drag this game down and keep it from meeting its full potential. Still worth a look for fans of the genre, but most will probably be better off skipping this one. | |||
| This War of Mine: Complete Edition | Survival Adventure | C+ | |
tl;drThis War of Mine is a Survival Adventure that has you guiding a group of civilians trying to survive in the rubble of a war zone. It does a good job balancing ethical dilemmas with the survival elements, but unfortunately the game has too many moments of tedium and frustration to make it truly deliver on the potential of its great premise. | |||
| Void Bastards | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drVoid Bastards is a First-Person Shooter and Roguelike where players board derelict spacecraft to acquire supplies while fighting off the residents of those spacecraft. This game’s tough difficulty, oppressive environments and limited supplies will mean this won’t be a game for everyone. However, if that sort of challenge appeals to you, you may want to check this out. | |||
| Cycle 28 | 2D Space Shooter / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drCycle 28 is a 2D Space Shooter that controls like Asteroids, but with a Roguelike game structure. There are some good ideas here and some classic arcade-style gameplay, but those good ideas aren’t well-utilized, and overall the game is too repetitive. | |||
| Flame Keeper | Action / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drFlame Keeper is an Isometric Action Game with Roguelike elements where players take the role of an anthropomorphic piece of flaming coal fighting dark creatures and trying to return flame to massive pyres. There are some interesting ideas at the heart of this game, such as a system where players must use their own life force, fire, as a currency to unlock progress. However, these interesting elements usually just make for more tedium as you grind to refill your fire over and over again. This game isn’t without its charms, but you have better options within the genre. | |||
| Gonner | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drGonner is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that is very odd, and has no intention of explaining any of what the heck is going on. This is frustrating enough, but in addition, the game is punishingly difficult. At the very least, the presentation is truly unique, though not everyone will enjoy it. While i don’t think this is a bad game, it is an extremely niche one that’s not for everyone. | |||
| Good Night, Knight | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drGood Night, Knight is a Top-Down Action-RPG with Roguelike elements. It has a fantastic sense of humor and some interesting equipment leveling elements, but for the most part this game’s presentation and gameplay just falls flat. While not terrible, I can’t give it a high recommendation. | |||
| Gravity Oddity | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drGravity Oddity is a game that combines Action-Platformer, 2-Stick Shooter, and Roguelike elements with a gameplay mechanic that lets players walk on any surface and use a teleport gun to zap between surfaces. Unfortunately, poor level design, poor boss design, and an underwhelming presentation all prevent this game from fully reaching the potential of its premise. | |||
| HyperParasite | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drHyperParasite is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements that has you playing as an alien parasite taking over its human enemies to fight. It’s a great premise, but the game never really lives up to that premise, thanks to limits on who you can possess, and their limited capabilities. | |||
| Lovecraft’s Untold Stories | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drLovecraft’s Untold Stories is a Roguelike and 2-Stick Shooter based on Lovecraft’s horrific insanity-inducing creations. The presentation and Roguelike elements here are fantastic, but the 2-Stick Shooter gameplay and menu navigation are so bad that they drag down the rest of the game. The result is something only the biggest Cthulhu fans will love. | |||
| Project Starship X | Bullet Hell Shmup / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drProject Starship X is a Bullet Hell Shmup with Roguelike elements, but this game’s focus on fast-paced random zany antics often means players will be left scratching their heads how various elements interact with their ship and the all-important dodge function. This game can be amusing, but it’s too volatile to provide the long-lasting experience that some of the better Shmups on the Nintendo Switch can provide. | |||
| Utopia 9 – A Volatile Vacation | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drUtopia 9 – A Volatile Vacation is a 2-Stick Shooter/Roguelike that has a lot of inventive ideas for a different spin on the genre, but its dreadfully slow pacing saps much of the fun out of the experience. | |||
| Vertical Drop Heroes HD | Action-Platformer / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drVertical Drop Heroes HD is an Action-Platformer and Roguelike that has you delving into vertically-scrolling randomized levels. Unfortunately, the game does little to set itself apart within the genre, and has tedious combat and a forgettable presentation. It’s not bad, but it’s not very good either. | |||
| Wizard of Legend | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drWizard of Legend is a Top-Down Action-RPG Roguelike that has you creating a loadout of spells to challenge randomized levels in a series of “trials”. The fighting here is fast-paced, but your cooldowns unfortunately are not, and while this game certainly isn’t bad, there are others in the genre that are far more deserving of your time. | |||
| Blacksea Odyssey | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drBlacksea Odyssey is a Two-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements that is basically Captain Ahab In Space. That sounds really cool, but the terribly slow combat and sluggish movement make it hard to get into, and players will likely find the game too tedious to want to play for very long. | |||
| Book of Demons | Top-Down Action-RPG / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drBook of Demons is a Diablo-style Action-RPG with Roguelike elements, but simplified. Unfortunately, this simplification, while novel, is done pretty poorly here, and all of the interesting things the game tries only cause frustration. Not a terrible game, but you have better options on the eShop. | |||
| Dead Ground | Tower Defense / Two-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drDead Ground is a game that combines Tower Defense, Two-Stick Shooter, and Roguelike elements, a pairing that works well in theory, but in practice simply can’t get past the fact that this game fails in the execution of every single element of the game. I commend the game for having some great ideas, but unfortunately those are ideas it just doesn’t get to work properly. | |||
| Grit and Valor – 1949 | Real-Time Strategy / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drGrit and Valor is a blend of Real-Time Strategy and Roguelike set in an alternate-history version of World War II with mechs. There are some creative ideas here, but faulty controls and at-times poor game design cause far too many problems for this to be enjoyable. | |||
| King Krieg Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drKing Krieg Survivors is an Arcade-style game and Roguelike clearly trying to copy the success of Vampire Survivors, and while this game does attempt something unique with its custom magic system, and its metal-inspired soundtrack is good, it is otherwise inferior to Vampire Survivors in every way, including its price. As such, there’s just no reason to play this when you could be playing Vampire Survivors instead. | |||
| ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove | Roguelike / Misc. Game | C- | |
tl;drToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove plays like a direct sequel to the first game in the series, and like that game you’ll be searching through levels for presents and ship parts while avoiding humans. Fans of the original game will love this, as this is a love letter to that game. However, everyone else will find it tedious and dull. | |||
| TumbleSeed | Arcade / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drTumbleSeed is a unique game that combines Arcade and Roguelike elements, having a player using both analog sticks to balance a seed on a vine as it teeters left and right on the game’s procedurally-generated levels. There are some clever, unique ideas here, but it’s hard to appreciate them with controls and game design that are seemingly designed to frustrate the player. Only the most patient players should bother with this one. | |||
| Despot’s Game | Strategy / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drDespot’s Game is a game that combines Roguelike and Strategy elements in a setting where players command a horde of humans being put through a mazelike gauntlet of enemies by an evil AI. There are some really original ideas here, but the complete lack of control in battles and the many ways the game sabotages your ability to make strategic choices really hurts this game. Even worse, the control interface on Nintendo Switch is absolutely disastrous. While I really like some of the ideas this game presents, the game itself is an absolute mess. | |||
| Galaxy Squad | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drGalaxy Squad is a game that combines XCOM-style Strategy-RPG gameplay with Roguelike elements as players guide their spacefaring party through the galaxy while balancing the needs of their ship and crew. There are some interesting ideas here, but the game is absolutely ruined by a wealth of clunky interface problems and a horrible lack of polish. Skip this one. | |||
| Halftime Heroes | Arcade / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drHalftime Heroes is a “Bullet Heaven” Arcade-style Roguelike that aims for the same sort of gameplay as titles like Vampire Survivors, but fails miserably, with terrible graphics that suffer from multiple issues, abilities and upgrades that seem to have little attachment to your choices, and other issues… all for the same $5 price as Vampire Survivors. As a result, it’s hard to see any reason to bother with this game. | |||
| Mighty Mage | Arcade / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drMighty Mage is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players take the role of one of four elemental mages fending off enemies in waves. The core gameplay here is decent enough, but the game is so terribly devoid of depth and variety that you’ll breeze through to the ending within 15 minutes. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Sword of Glory | Roguelike / Action | D+ | |
tl;drSword of Glory is a Roguelike Action game where players are essentially just participating in a series of gladiatorial fights. Unfortunately, virtually everything about this game is poorly-constructed, amateurish, and unpolished, and while the Roguelike elements aren’t bad, that doesn’t make up for the poor combat, the nonsensical story, the ugly visuals, the terrible sound design… in short, don’t get this game. | |||
| Atomic Heist | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | D | |
tl;drAtomic Heist is a 2-Stick Shooter with unimpressive visuals and punishing gameplay that requires players to conserve their ammo but also not take too long in the game’s levels. The result is a distinct lack of fun in a genre the Nintendo Switch has in ready supply – get another better game instead. | |||
| Dungeon Arsenal | Roguelike / RPG | D | |
tl;drDungeon Arsenal is a Roguelike RPG that uses a Card Game aesthetic, but the presentation is dull and the gameplay has far too little player agency. Don’t waste your time or money with this one. | |||
| Unalive 010 | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | D | |
tl;drUnalive 010 is a 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike where players take the role of a survivor of a research laboratory accident who must shoot your way out through randomly-generated rooms filled with monsters. This game is dreadfully ugly, monotonous, has bad hit detection, issues with its non-tutorial tutorial, and it is simply not fun to fire your slow, boring gun in this game. You have countless better options for this sort of game on Nintendo Switch, play one of those games instead. | |||
| OS Omega | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | F | |
tl;drOS Omega is a 2-Stick Shooter with Roguelike elements that has you playing an anthropomorphized computer program fighting other programs and microchips… or something. This game looks terrible, sounds terrible, controls terrible, and in so many ways just feels like a broken and incomplete experience. Do not buy it. | |||
