The Best Hidden Gems on the Nintendo Switch

GameGenreGrade
AlekonFirst-Person Shooter / Misc.A
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre.
Backpack HeroRoguelike / Turn-Based RPG / Management SimulationA-
tl;dr Backpack Hero is a game that combines Roguelike, Turn-Based RPG, and Management Simulation elements, with a strong emphasis on organizing equipment in your backpack for the most effective results in battle. The way this game takes a classic RPG mechanic and expands on it to make it such a major element of the gameplay here is absolutely inspired. There are a few areas where this game could do with a bit more work, but overall this game is an absolute delight, and one that is definitely worth a look for fans of RPGs and Roguelikes.
Battle Suit AcesTurn-Based Card RPGA-
tl;dr Battle Suit Aces is a Turn-Based Card RPG where players deploy mechs and drones to fend off enemies in space. This game has a surprisingly compelling story and characters, with a great presentation and excellent voice acting. It also delivers with some well-crafted and deep gameplay with lots of customizability. This game could be better about presenting info to the player, and it might be tough for a newbie, but fans of Card RPGs will absolutely want to give this one a look.
Crysis 3 RemasteredFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drCrysis 3 Remastered is an absolute marvel of a First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, featuring some of the best graphics on the platform, with visuals and performance that far outpaces prior console versions of the game. What’s more, the gameplay has been much-improved over previous entries in the series, with better enemy AI, improved stealth, better pacing and variety. This is an absolute must-have First-Person Shooter campaign. It’s a shame the Nintendo Switch version drops the multiplayer mode that was in the original, but in all other respects, this is a spectacular port to Nintendo’s handheld, and absolutely worth a look for any fans of the genre.
Deemo -Reborn-Music-Rhythm / Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drDeemo Reborn is a re-imagining of the original Deemo that takes the piano-focused Music-Rhythm gameplay of the original, improves the graphics, and adds new Graphic Adventure elements. The graphics are definitely an improvement here, and both the Music-Rhythm and Graphic Adventure gameplay is top-notch, but the two gameplay styles don’t work all that well together, and the much smaller track list compared to the original Deemo means that even though this is still a great game, it doesn’t quite measure up to its predecessor.
Explosionade DXAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drExplosionade is an Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter mechanics and some really delightful game mechanics like its shield/anti-gravity mechanic and adaptable grenades. It’s a bit short and lacking in content, but it’s more than worth its small $6 price tag, and fans of the genre should absolutely give this game a try.
Farm TogetherManagement SimA-
tl;drFarm Together is a Farm Management Sim that has a lot of the trappings of a microtransaction-filled game, but without the microtransactions. Instead, you’ll find it to have nice, relaxing gameplay that puts the focus on playing the game a little bit at a time and gradually watching your farm grow over time. If you’re cool with that sort of thing, this game could surprise you with how enjoyable it is.
FliponMatch-3 PuzzleA-
tl;drFlipon is a Match-3 Puzzle game that directly copies the formula of Panel De Pon, and does so extraordinarily well, not only retaining the quality combo-heavy game mechanics of the original, but adding new features like special abilities and 4-player competitive play. It’s only real flaws are a lackluster presentation and a lack of online play. Still, for $6 this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that’s well worth adding to your collection.
Guardian TalesTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drGuardian Tales is a free-to-play Zelda-style Top-Down Action-RPG with fun gameplay, lots of variety, an appealing presentation, and great writing with a superb sense of humor. The only thing that detracts from this otherwise outstanding game is the overbearing presence of the countless ways this game wants to catch you up in its microtransactions. However, if you can stomach all the gacha mechanics, it’s well worth a look – everything else about this game is outstanding.
Hard WestTurn-Based Strategy-RPG / Interactive Story-Driven AdventureA-
tl;drHard West is an XCOM-style Strategy-RPG that mixes in Choose-Your-Own Adventure mechanics, set in a darker, more supernatural version of the Wild West. It’s not without a few rough edges, but on the whole this is a delightfully inventive take on the genre, well worth a look.
Monaco Complete EditionTop-Down StealthA-
tl;drMonaco is a Top-Down Stealth game that has you as one of various archetypal members of a crew of criminals breaking into and out of places, robbing them, and trying not to get caught while doing so. It’s a difficult game, but it’s delightful in single-player, and an absolute blast in co-op. Online play requires jumping through the Switch’s usual frustrating hoops, but local and local wireless play is excellent, and on the whole this is still a must-have game for co-op fans on the Switch.
Remnants of NaezithPlatformerA-
tl;drRemnants of Naezith is a challenging Platformer where players must use a grappling hook and the game’s fun physics system to swing their way to the end of every level. The gameplay here is great, fast-paced, and gives players a lot they can do despite having a limited move set. If you’re down for a tough but fair Platformer, this is a great choice.
SanabiAction-PlatformerA-
tl;dr Sanabi is an Action-Platformer where players take the role of a revenge-fueled man using his bionic arm’s grappling hook to swing acrobatically through a desolate cyberpunk-style city and gracefully and efficiently eliminate its robotic threats. What’s more, this game has an outstanding story filled with character and atmosphere, and while the story and gameplay can butt heads at time, it hardly matters as both the gameplay and the story had me glued to my screen. This is a truly must-play game for any Action fan on Nintendo Switch.
Shoot 1UP DXShmupA-
tl;drShoot 1UP DX is a Shmup where players control an entire squadron of ships at once, adding potentially dozens of ships to their force. There are multiple creative fun mechanics at work here, difficulty options to cater to every skill level, and just overall this is one of the most enjoyable Shmups I’ve ever played. It’s not as precise and well-crafted as Ikaruga, but it is arguably just as much of a blast to play, and Shmup fans should absolutely add this game to their collection, especially at the fantastic price of $6. Do not miss this one!
SoundfallTop-Down Action-RPG / Music-RhythmA-
tl;drSoundfall is a game that combines Action-RPG and Music-Rhythm elements, where players fight off hordes of enemies and hunt for loot while timing their attacks to the beat of a massive, varied, and overall excellent soundtrack. Some elements of the gameplay and presentation can get a tad repetitive, and there are a few tweaks I would have preferred, but overall this is a truly excellent game well worth playing.
Super Cable BoyPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Cable Boy is a challenging Platformer where players control a Game Boy-like device in a digital world. The visual presentation is striking and fits the game’s themes well, but what really stands out here is the excellent gameplay, which challenges players to swap between different “cartridges” (abilities) to perform some great acrobatic feats. There’s even a solid 2-player co-op mode here as well. In short, if you enjoy challenging Platformers, consider Super Cable Boy a must-have.
ValleyFirst-Person PlatformerA-
tl;drValley is a First-Person game without much in the way of shooting and without any difficult puzzles, but with some really excellent platforming mechanics and great atmosphere (so long as you don’t mind its cringe-worthy story and the graphical downgrade from other platforms). The game isn’t very difficult, and it sadly doesn’t make the fullest use of the great potential of its gameplay, but it has enough moments of pure joy during its short length that it’s worth a look.
1993 ShenandoahShmupB+
tl;dr1993 Shenandoah is a Shmup originally intended for release on the Amiga in 1993, but only just now seeing light of day on the Switch. Its old-fashioned design may put off some players, but the excellent upgrade system, solid local co-op play, and unique presentation all combine to make this a pretty unique game that’s worth checking out for fans of the genre.
Adventures of ChrisPlatformerB+
tl;drAdventures of Chris is a Platformer about a dumpy kid turned into a balloon by a vampire and ultimately using this ability to become a hero. It’s a whimsical game that uses its balloon-like mechanics to make for some clever level design, as well as Mega Man-esque game progression that makes for an overall fun experience. It may not look like much, but if you can get past the lacking presentation, Adventures of Chris is a unique delight of a Platformer.
Art of BalancePuzzleB+
tl;drArt of Balance is a physics-based Puzzle game where you stack blocks and try to keep them from tipping over or falling. This version has a decent amount of content and some multiplayer modes, and the core gameplay here is still as solid as ever.
Batu ta BatuUnlimited Pattern PuzzleB+
tl;drBatu Ta Batu is a Puzzle game that has players combining like-colored squares on a board to accomplish various goals in different game modes. Combining compelling gameplay, a lot of content, some good variety, and a low asking price, this game should be considered a must-have for Puzzle game fans on the Nintendo Switch.
Bleed Complete BundleCompilation / Action-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterB+
tl;drBleed Complete Bundle includes Bleed and Bleed 2, both excellent Action-Platformers with 2-Stick Shooter gunplay, and both also extremely short and extremely overpriced games. Much as with the individual games, if you can get this collection at a discount, absolutely do so because the games are immensely fun. However, even with the savings this bundle provides, it’s still horribly overpriced at its normal price.
Broken AgeGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drBroken Age is a Graphic Adventure by Tim Schaefer. That means you’re getting an incredibly well-written story with a fantastic presentation… along with some frustrating puzzles. Thankfully, the frustration isn’t quite as bad as it used to be, and the story is just as good as those games of old. Genre fans won’t want to miss this.
CaveblazersAction-Platformer / RoguelikeB+
tl;drCaveblazers is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that plays like a more combat-focused version of Spelunky. It’s not without its rough spots, but on the whole this is a surprisingly delightful challenging experience on the Switch.
Chime SharpPuzzleB+
tl;drChime Sharp, like its predecessor, is an excellent, chill sorta’ puzzle game that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down, and has a wonderful presentation. It’s just a shame that there’s no multiplayer.
Cobalt CoreTurn-Based Card RPG / RoguelikeB+
tl;drCobalt Core is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike much like Slay the Spire, but it brings its own clever ideas to the genre, such as battling with spaceships consisting of different parts, and being able to build a deck using three different characters with their own specialties. All of this is within a really endearing presentation. I have my issues with the game’s progression, but overall this is a fantastic addition to this genre, and fans of games like this will definitely want to play it.
Cosmic ExpressPuzzleB+
tl;drCosmic Express is a family-friendly Puzzle Game where players create train routes in various space colonies to deliver aliens to their homes. The gameplay here is simple but well-crafted, with some really clever puzzle design. There’s also a good amount of content here, some good variety, and an adorable presentation. If you enjoy Puzzle games, this is definitely one you’ll want to get.
Couple MakerPuzzleB+
tl;drCouple Maker is a Puzzle game that has players placing tiles to guide characters with the goal of forming color-coded meetings of those characters. It’s lighthearted but with a lot of creativity that went into its puzzle mechanics, and for under $2 there’s a surprising amount of content here. This is a great choice for players looking to add something inexpensive to their Puzzle game library.
Crazy BMX WorldCompilation / Auto-RunnerB+
tl;drCrazy BMX World is a Compilation of the family-friendly Auto-Runner games Bike Rider DX, Bike Rider Dx2: Galaxy, and the previously Japan-only Bike Rider DX3: Time Rider. This Compilation frustratingly forces players to unlock all of its games, doesn’t support Pro Controllers, and lacks the earlier releases’ DLC. However, at $3, this is still an outstanding bargain of a package that contains simple but compelling Auto-Runner gameplay, and anyone who enjoys this sort of game or wants a fun but simple time-waster on the cheap would do well to pick this game up.
Crumble3D PlatformerB+
tl;drCrumble is a 3D Platformer that has players speeding through obstacle course-style levels as a slime with a grappling hook-like tongue. Crumble is sorely lacking polish and has some really terrible performance issues, as well as a bit of a steep learning curve. Yet despite these major flaws, it is an absolute joy to play, with an incredible sense of speed, thrilling physics, phenomenal level design, and an outstanding sense of freedom. It may be far from perfect, but it is still an absolutely must-play game for fans of Platformers.
Crypt StalkerCompilation / Action-PlatformerB+
tl;dr Crypt Stalker is a Compilation of two (and a half) versions of Action-Platformer games inspired by the classic NES and Game Boy Castlevania games, and they succeed at this task beautifully. There are certainly some issues I could nitpick, but overall this is a delightful package that is well worth the $7 price tag.
Crystal ProjectTurn-Based JRPGB+
tl;dr Crystal Project is a Turn-Based JRPG that definitely has its shortcomings – the graphics are extremely unimpressive, the story and characters are virtually nonexistent, and the lack of direction can leave you feeling lost and lead to massive difficulty spikes. However, despite all of these flaws, this is an immensely satisfying JRPG, thanks to its excellent job class system, great combat, liberating exploration, and gorgeous soundtrack. As long as you can overlook the bad stuff and focus on the good stuff, this game is absolutely worth playing.
Epic Astro StoryManagement SimulationB+
tl;dr Epic Astro Story is a Management Simulation where players manage a space colony, and so it is fitting that this game marks developer Kairosoft exploring new territory as well. There are some really creative elements here, and some surprisingly compelling gameplay. Fans of the genre may find this game to be a bit lacking in depth, but for its low $12 price tag this is a superb Management Simulation.
Find the BalancePuzzleB+
tl;drFind the Balance is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle game where players must stack numerous objects without them falling. While this game doesn’t have the nice presentation or some of the features of Art of Balance, it makes up for it with a good variety of game modes, including an excellent Endless mode. If you’re looking for a good, inexpensive Puzzle game, this is well worth trying.
Football Heroes TurboSports (Football)B+
tl;drFootball Heroes Turbo is a silly, cartoony, arcadey game of Football that has players getting into fistfights and scoring money for good plays. It is also an absolute blast to play, and while it can get a bit chaotic at times (and the online lobbies are apparently empty), until the Switch sees a port of Madden, this may very well be the best football game on the console.
Gems of WarPuzzle / RPGB+
tl;drGems of War is a free-to-play Puzzle/RPG hybrid much like its predecessor Puzzle Quest, but Gems streamlines the gameplay, gives it some nice nuances, and elevates the multiplayer by having players challenge each other indirectly, giving them the freedom to choose how tough an opponent they want to take on. The microtransactions here aren’t too bothersome, and the only complaints I have are a lack of local multiplayer and the terrible story. However, the Puzzle gameplay here is top-notch, and fans of Puzzle games should consider this one an absolute must-have on the Switch.
Get Packed: Couch ChaosTop-Down Arcade / Party GameB+
tl;drGet Packed is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players scrambling to remove items from a property and toss them into a moving truck. The co-op gameplay here is good, but lacking content in a way that ensures it won’t last long. The competitive gameplay, on the other hand, is delightful enough to earn this game a proper spot in your Party Game rotation.
HexceedPuzzleB+
tl;drHexceed is a free-to-play Puzzle game that plays similarly to Minesweeper, but with more variety, and game design that never requires the player to guess where it is and isn’t safe to click. The amount of content included here for free is mind-boggling, and there are no microtransactions – only paid expansion content once you exhaust the over 470 levels included for free. And while the presentation may look dull, the gameplay here is absolutely superb. If you are a Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch, you should absolutely download this game immediately.
HextonesPuzzleB+
tl;drHextones is a Puzzle game where players place hexagonal tiles trying to fit them as tightly as possible while matching their colors and symbols. This game features simple, compelling gameplay and a wonderfully calming presentation, and while there’s a disappointing lack of options and features, the $3 price tag makes this a no-brainer for Puzzle game fans.
Hidden in Plain SightStealth / Party GameB+
tl;drHidden in Plain Sight is a Stealth-focused Party Game where players try to figure out which character in a crowd they and their opponents are before everyone else does while performing a simple task. This game doesn’t look like much, but it’s extremely accessible and loads of fun for both veteran gamers and casual gamers alike. If you want a fun, unique Party game to add to your collection, consider this game a must-have.
Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party EditionPuzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Party GameB+
tl;drHome Sheep Home is a family-friendly co-op Puzzle-Platformer and Party Game based on the Shaun the Sheep animated series and films. This game manages to do a great job with all of its disparate elements – the license is scaled-down somewhat, but what’s here does justice to the franchise. The Puzzle-Platformer content is smartly well-crafted, and the Party Game content is fun and varied enough to keep players entertained for a good while. I have some issues with the core Platformer mechanics here, but overall this is an excellent package that does its best to please everyone, and largely succeeds.
Indie Gems Bundle – Explosions EditionCompilation / Bullet Hell Shmup / Roguelike / 2-Stick Shooter / Match-3 PuzzleB+
tl;drIndie Gems Bundle: Explosions Edition is a Compilation of three Action-packed games, each of them ranging from good to great. If you’re a fan of Shmups and 2-Stick shooters, you’re bound to find something to love in this package, even if the savings over purchasing these games individually is minimal.
Inferno 22-Stick ShooterB+
tl;drInferno 2 is a straightforward 2-Stick Shooter that has solid gameplay, a slick presentation, and good Co-Op. It’s a bit on the easy side, but fans of the genre will find it to be an excellent choice, especially for its low price tag.
Jenny LeClue: DetectivuGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drJenny LeClue is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure that tells a story-within-a-story of an author writing a tale about a kid detective. The presentation here is outstanding, with some truly wonderful writing and voice acting. The gameplay isn’t very revolutionary or challenging, but that only makes it a better choice for younger or more inexperienced players, and more skilled players will still probably find the game’s wonderful writing makes this a worthwhile purchase.
Kittens and YarnPuzzleB+
tl;drKittens and Yarn is a family-friendly hex-based tile-swapping Puzzle game that tasks players with rearranging hexagonal tiles to make the lines of colored yarn on the tiles match up. The surprisingly-compelling gameplay is complimented by a warm, soothing presentation. The game is short, but at $3, it’s still well worth picking up, and as such I think Puzzle game fans should consider this a must-have.
KORG GadgetMusic Creation ApplicationB+
tl;drKORG Gadget is a Music Creation Application that is not going to be for everyone. While it does have some decent introductory tutorials to help newbies learn the basics, this is largely a music production studio software suite for professionals, and while this may be targeting a niche audience (especially with a nasty $48 price tag), it serves that audience extremely well, with a massive wealth of options, features, and content. If you wanted to turn your Nintendo Switch into a music production studio (and actually know how to operate one), KORG Gadget is exactly what you’re looking for.
Longstory: A Dating Game for the Real WorldVisual NovelB+
tl;drLongstory is a Visual Novel where players take the role of a Junior High School student in a strange school with a “hug it out”-style principal and one student who never takes off a giant turkey mascot outfit. Despite its eccentricities and occasional dips into groan-worthy “teenage drama”, as well as some frustrating interface issues, overall I think players will be delighted with this game’s wonderful characters, engaging plot, meaningful choices, and surprisingly impressive inclusivity. As of this writing, this game is one of my favorite romance stories on the Nintendo Switch.
MachinariumGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drMachinarium is a Graphic Adventure that tasks you with controlling a wordless robot as he ventures through a strange land filled with unusual puzzles. It’s funny and inventive, and while its odd nature makes it easy to get stuck in places, it’s such a charming game you’ll want to power through those moments to see each new quirky character and surreal locale. Definitely worth a look.
Maggie the MagnetPuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;drMaggie the Magnet is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle-Platformer where players control a magnet by turning on and off its magnetism. The simple one-button gameplay is well-crafted, and combines with excellent level design to make for a thoroughly enjoyable Puzzle game, with a surprisingly hefty amount of content for its small $5 price tag. If you’re a fan of Puzzle games, Maggie the Magnet is well worth picking up.
Metaloid: OriginAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drMetaloid is an Action-Platformer with gameplay that seems straight out of the Mega Man X series, although this game takes a completely different approach to its game structure and weapon upgrades. Fans of classic 16-bit era action-platformers should definitely give this game a look.
Mosa LinaPuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;dr Mosa Lina is a physics-based Puzzle-Platformer that spits in the face of genre conventions, giving players a simple task to perform and outfitting them with tools that may be wholly incapable of completing that task. it’s up to players to experiment and find unique ways to use their randomized set of tools. And sometimes players need to admit they can’t do it, give up, and try something different. This won’t be a game for everyone – some players will surely despise the high difficulty and the game’s absolute refusal to present something well thought-out and polished. But others will be absolutely delighted by the variety, wild creativity, and the bold decision to teach players the hard way that they need to be willing to admit defeat. At the very least, players craving something different in a Puzzle-Platformer should absolutely consider Mosa Lina a must-have.
Ms. Splosion ManPlatformerB+
tl;drMs. Splosion Man is a solid Platformer with good co-op and an amusing presentation, although that presentation can wear a bit thin before long. Still, this is definitely worth a look for fans of the genre.
PianistaMusic-RhythmB+
tl;dr Pianista is a family-friendly Music-Rhythm game that has players playing solo piano themes based on the abridged works of legendary classical artists. This means the song list is much more recognizable than what was in the similar game Deemo, but that song list is also much shorter, and the Nintendo Switch version of Pianista unfortunately lacks Deemo’s great touchscreen gameplay. However, this is still absolutely worth picking up for Music-Rhythm fans on Nintendo Switch.
Piczle Puzzle & Watch CollectionCompilation / Picross Puzzle / Puzzle / SimulationB+
tl;drPiczle Puzzle & Watch Collection is a Compilation of three Puzzle games presented as a Simulation of classic Game & Watch-style handheld LCD devices. The Puzzle games are solid, if a bit simple, and have a good amount of content for the $8 price tag. But what’s really surprising here is just how extensive a Simulation this is, going to some extraordinary lengths to make the LCD devices within the game as realistic as possible. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, this is a solid Compilation for you, but if you’re a fan of retro-style nostalgia, you should absolutely give this game a look.
Pix the CatPuzzle / ArcadeB+
tl;drPix the Cat is a game with Puzzle and Arcade elements that combines the gameplay of Pac-Man and Snake with a really good presentation and a lot of variety across the game’s four modes. It’s a bit on the difficult side, and I feel like a few additions could have made for a huge improvement, but overall this is an excellent game well worth giving a look.
Puddle KnightsPuzzleB+
tl;drPuddle Knights is a character-based Puzzle game that has you moving around knights so that nobles can step on their capes to avoid getting their feet dirty in puddles of mud. It’s a cute concept with an appealing presentation, and it makes for some really clever puzzles despite how simple it is to play and control. Puzzle fans, this is definitely a game you’ll want to take a look at.
Quarantine CircularGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drQuarantine Circular is a Graphic Adventure game about an interrogation of an alien life form in the midst of a global pandemic. This game’s well-told story makes it well worth playing despite its short length and the confusion caused by its character-swapping narrative.
Savage HalloweenAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drSavage Halloween is an Action-Platformer with old-school charm that has players blasting monstrous enemies with an arsenal of guns. This game doesn’t do anything especially original, but overall it’s a fantastic Action-Platformer, and an absolute steal at $5.
Soul LinkFalling-Block PuzzleB+
tl;dr Soul Link is a family-friendly physics-based Falling-Block Puzzle that has players trying to stack Tetris-like blocks to make stable bridges. The gameplay here is excellent, and there’s some good variety for the game’s relatively low price tag. I do wish some of the game mechanics worked better, and the lack of multiplayer is glaring, but despite these issues this is still a superb Puzzle game well worth picking up.
Squad 51 Vs. The Flying SaucersShmupB+
tl;drSquad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers is a Shmup inspired by classic 1950s Sci-Fi B-Movies, and the way this game recreates the presentation of those old films is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The gameplay here is quite good too, though it does have a few small issues, and the Nintendo Switch version’s loading screens are annoying. Still, overall this is a must for Shmup fans and well worth checking out anyone with a fondness for classic cinema.
The House of Da VinciFirst-Person PuzzleB+
tl;drThe House of Da Vinci is a First-Person Puzzle game that has you fiddling with beautifully intricate, deviously-designed devices to find a way to enter farther into Da Vinci’s workshop. This game’s puzzles are fantastic, and the game has an excellent optional hint system to keep you from getting stuck for too long. The only flaw here is the game’s motion controls, which can be awkward and frustrating. However, the rest of the game is so good that they’re worth putting up with.
The Jackbox Party Pack 2Compilation / Party GamesB+
tl;drThe Jackbox Party Pack 2 is a Collection of Party Games that includes five games that players play using their Smartphone instead of a controller. Two of the games in this collection are fantastic, and only one of the games here isn’t worth trying. Overall, the games in this collection aren’t quite as good as what was in the first Party Pack, but there’s more variety here and this is still a superb collection of Party Games.
The Room TwoFirst-Person PuzzleB+
tl;drThe Room Two is a First-Person Puzzle game where players interact with a mechanical puzzle boxes to try to gradually unlock their secrets. This is an outstanding Puzzle game that improves on its predecessor, though it does have some control issues and a disappointingly short length. Still, if you’re a fan of Puzzle games, this is well worth a look.
The Solitaire ConspiracyCard Game (Solitaire – Misc.)B+
tl;drThe Solitaire Conspiracy is a Card Game that presents the game of solitaire as a high-stakes representation of moving around teams of spies to counter a mysterious threat. The core gameplay here is fun and compelling, if a bit on the easy side, and the presentation elevates that gameplay and makes it truly stand out. If you enjoy solitaire and want to try a game that takes the old-fashioned game and modernizes it, you should definitely check this out.
Trine Ultimate CollectionCompilation / Puzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;drTrine Ultimate Collection is a Compilation that includes all four games in the Puzzle-Platformer series about three characters with different abilities using their unique talents to fight enemies and solve puzzles. This is a treasure trove for anyone who enjoys the genre or is looking for a top-notch Co-Op collection for their Switch, with most of these game being visually-stunning as well.
W.A.N.D. ProjectArcade / RoguelikeB+
tl;dr W.A.N.D. Project is an Arcade-style Roguelike in the “Bullet Heaven” style of game that Vampire Survivors pioneered, but it manages to separate itself from the pack with its gameplay that has you combining spell components on a flowchart-like grid to create your own custom attacks for your alien-fighting magical girl. I wish there were more content and even more ability to customize your character’s abilities, but overall this is an inspired take on the genre that anyone who enjoys this sort of game should absolutely check out.
Zombie Night TerrorPuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;dr Zombie Night Terror is a Puzzle-Platformer in the vein of Lemmings, where players indirectly control a zombie horde rampaging through the game’s levels. Level goals could be a bit more clear, and this release is missing the PC version’s level builder, but otherwise this game is an absolute delight that makes fantastic use of the Nintendo Switch’s unique features, has a great presentation, and gives players a truly inspired twist on a classic of the genre.
Zumba GardenMatch-3 PuzzleB+
tl;dr Zumba Garden is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle game which, like its predecessor, is clearly copying the Zuma formula, and like its predecessor it does a surprisingly good job of it. In fact, this time I would argue things are even better, with a solid presentation and an outstanding RPG-style upgrade system. There are a few options and game modes I wish this game had, and a few minor complaints here and there, but it’s hard to complain when for only $3, we’re getting a “copycat” game that’s nearly as good as the original. If you’re a Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch, this is definitely one to get.
