GameGenreGrade
Mario Kart 8 DeluxeKart RacerA++
tl;drMario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just a Kart Racing game, it is the Kart Racing game, removing the few flaws the Wii U version had and adding even more content to an already content-rich game, making this arguably the best-playing, best-looking and all-around best period when it comes to this type of racing game. If you have a Switch, get this game.
Super Mario Odyssey3D PlatformerA++
tl;drSuper Mario Odyssey is Mario’s long-awaited return to 3D platforming, and it’s just about everything fans of the series could want. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it has damn near perfected it, filling the game with new surprises around every corner. It is an absolute must-have game on the Nintendo Switch
Super Smash Bros. UltimateFighting Game / Platformer / Party GameA++
tl;drSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest in the series of Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game titles, and it is in my mind the greatest, with absolutely tons of content, characters, stages, settings, and more, all built on a foundation of absolutely fun gameplay. A must-own game for the Switch.
The Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimOpen-World First-Person Action-RPGA++
tl;drSkyrim is an Open-World Action-RPG that gives players a huge, detailed world with an epic storyline, and lets them decide what they want to do in that world. It plays surprisingly smoothly on the Switch, although it lacks the graphical upgrades and mod support of other versions. On the other hand, this version of the game includes all of the expansions to the game, and adds in a few unique features of its own, such as gyroscopic aiming. On the whole, this is a surprisingly good release of one of the greatest videogames of all-time, and players who don’t yet own it should consider it a must-buy. Even if you do already own it, the ability to take it on the go might just be enough to convince you to buy it again.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildOpen-World Action-RPGA++
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an Open-World Action-RPG that sheds much of the Zelda series’ formula and tries some really new and amazing things that make this an absolutely unforgettable experience unlike anything else out there, really pushing the thrill of exploration. It’s not without its flaws, but even so, there is so much to love here, so much new ground broken that it’s easy to look past those when everything else here is just pure joy. An absolute must-have.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the KingdomOpen-World Action-RPGA++
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is not just an Open-World Action-RPG that returns to the world we were introduced to in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This is a game that finds new, impressive, and truly compelling ways to explore that world. This is a game that balances the familiar world and gameplay of that incredible game with brilliant new gameplay ideas, a compelling new story, and a massive scope that’s not only far greater than what was in this game’s predecessor, but is even greater than Nintendo led us to believe it would be. If you hated Breath of the Wild, this game won’t change your mind. If you have not yet played Breath of the Wild, you should probably go play that first. For pretty much everyone else, you should consider this an absolute must-have game, and a reason to own a Nintendo Switch.

GameGenreGrade
Animal Crossing: New HorizonsManagement SimA+
tl;drAnimal Crossing: New Horizons is a light-hearted, family-friendly, casual Management Sim where the time and date in the game is the same as in real life, and where players perform small tasks and customize their home and their village. This entry is a huge step forward for the series, adding many new mechanics and gameplay systems that greatly improve the game’s customization elements while giving added quality of life enhancements as well. There constantly seems like something new and fun to do, with new surprises seemingly every day. Unless you have a problem with more relaxed, slower-paced games, you should consider this game a must-have.
Astral ChainSpectacle Fighter / Action-RPGA+
tl;drAstral Chain is a Spectacle Fighter like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, but it plays wildly differently than those games, with a refreshingly unique chain combat system, some Action-RPG elements tied to Arkham-like investigation sections, and a fantastical world inspired by classic anime, all in a package with a truly excellent presentation. This is a must-have game on Switch, especially for fans of Action games and especially especially for those looking for something truly different. Do not miss out on this game.
Batman: Arkham AsylumAction-RPG / MetroidvaniaA+
tl;drSimply put, Batman: Arkham Asylum set the groundwork for this series with an absolute massive success right from the first game, with a perfect blend of exploration, combat, fun gadgets, great story, and lots of variety. While some may prefer the Open-World approach of later games, I feel the more focused Metroidvania level design of this game is every bit as valid. In any case, this is an absolute must-play game for any Bat-fan.
Batman: Arkham CityOpen-World Action-RPGA+
tl;drEverything that Arkham Asylum does well, Arkham City does just as well if not better, as well as bigger and more spectacular. The Open-World game design here is superb, Batman’s expanded moveset and traversal abilities are truly delightful, and the story and world of this game is a thrill to explore. Another must-play for anyone looking for a great Batman game.
Bayonetta 2Spectacle FighterA+
tl;drBayonetta 2, like the first game, is a Spectacle Fighter like Devil May Cry, and it is arguably one of the best games in its genre, with amazing fighting mechanics, a lot of variety, and overall extremely fun gameplay, so long as you’re not bothered by the extremely sexualized main character. This is also clearly the definitive version of the game, so if you don’t mind the M rating, you should consider this game a must-have on the Switch.
Bayonetta 3Spectacle FighterA+
tl;drBayonetta 3 not only delivers on the finely-crafted gameplay this Spectacle Fighter series is known for, but expands on it with the wonderful new Demon Slave ability that has you swapping back and forth between Bayonetta and her kaiju-sized demonic creatures. Add to this some breathtaking setpiece moments and a gorgeous presentation and you have one of the best Action games of recent years. Do not miss this game.
Borderlands Legendary CollectionCompilation / First-Person ShooterA+
tl;drBorderlands Legendary Collection is a compilation of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, all phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. On top of that, this is an outstanding value at $50. Unless you already have these games on another platform, consider Borderlands Legendary Collection a must-have on the Nintendo Switch.
Diablo III: Eternal CollectionTop-Down Action-RPGA+
tl;drDiablo III is the loot-hunting Action-RPG that is currently the standard for the genre, and this is an excellent port that sacrifices little in the transition to the Switch and even adds in a few things. This is one of the best co-op games on the Switch, whether you’re sitting on the same couch or playing online, and it has a huge wealth of content. If you do not already have this game on another platform, you should definitely consider getting the Switch version.
Diablo Prime Evil CollectionTop-Down Action-RPGA+
tl;drDiablo Prime Evil Collection is a Compilation that includes the absolute must-have Top-Down Action-RPG Diablo III: Eternal Collection, as well as the massively disappointing Diablo II: Resurrected, along with a few nice cosmetic items. While this is an uneven package, the price is so good that anyone buying Diablo III on the Nintendo Switch (and you really should) is better off getting this package instead, as it includes more content for the same price.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical FreezePlatformerA+
tl;drDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is about as good as 2D platformers can get – it plays well, it looks great, and the level design is some of the best that’s ever been seen in a videogame. This is a game that should be in every Switch owner’s collection.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land3D PlatformerA+
tl;drKirby and the Forgotten Land is a family-friendly 3D Platformer that marks Kirby’s first fully-fledged 3D adventure, and it is an outstanding game that is one of the best titles in the Kirby franchise. While I have a few complaints about choppy background animations and a relatively easy difficulty level, overall this game is an absolute blast to play, full of personality and originality, all while drawing inspiration from some of the best Mario and Donkey Kong games, as well as Kirby’s own 2D adventures. If you enjoy Platformers, you should absolutely get this game.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of HopeTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA+
tl;drMario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is a family-friendly Turn-Based Strategy-RPG that improves on its predecessor Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle in virtually every way. Players have plenty of ways to adapt and change their party, the combat is delightfully deep but also wonderfully accessible, the game is bursting with personality, has a killer soundtrack, a great sense of humor, and plenty of content to explore. This just about everything you could hope for in a sequel, and then some.
Mega Man Legacy CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerA+
tl;drMega Man Legacy Collection is a collection of the first six NES games in this series of Action-Platformers. Two of these games are absolutely legendary, one is just as good if a bit less-iconic, and the other games here are all at least worth playing. Pair that with an absolute wealth of options and bonus content and a very reasonable price tag and you have an absolute must-have collection that any fan of Action-Platformers should own.
Mega Man X Legacy CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerA+
tl;drMega Man X Legacy Collection is a collection of the first four games in this series of Action-Platformers. Every one of the included games is excellent, with the first in particular being a must-play game that still stands tall as one of the finest in the genre. What’s more, this package includes a huge wealth of bonus content. Fans of Action-Platformers should absolutely have this game in their collection.
Metroid Prime RemasteredFirst-Person Shooter / MetroidvaniaA+
tl;drMetroid Prime Remastered is a remake of a game that combines First-Person Shooter Gameplay with Metroidvania game structure, first released on the GameCube. Not only has Metroid Prime aged incredibly well, but this remake is outstanding, going above and beyond in its graphical improvements, control options, and bonus content. The result is the absolutely definitive version of one of the greatest games ever made.
Octopath Traveler + Octopath Traveler II BundleCompilation / Turn-Based JRPGA+
tl;dr Octopath Traveler + Octopath Traveler II Bundle is a Compilation containing the two named games, both absolutely must-play Turn-Based JRPGs, and with the great value this bundle presents, it’s an even bigger no-brainer than either game on its own. If you enjoy JRPGs on Nintendo Switch and have yet to play the Octopath Traveler games, you should absolutely get this bundle.
Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive EditionMetroidvaniaA+
tl;drOri and the Blind Forest is, quite simply, one of the best Metroidvania games ever made, and not only is this an amazing port of a previously Xbox One-exclusive title, but it’s actually improved in its Switch release, which now stands tall as the truly definitive version of the game. This is a must-have game on the Switch, and if you missed it on the Xbox and PC, you owe it to yourself to get it now.
Ori: The CollectionCompilation / MetroidvaniaA+
tl;drOri: The Collection on Nintendo Switch is a physical-only Compilation of Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. In sum, this is two of the most well-crafted, fun, and stunningly beautiful Metroidvania games ever made. The Compilation is priced about the same as it would cost to get these games separately, but in exchange you get both games on the cartridge, with a few small extras as well. If you have somehow missed out on these games until now, you should definitely remedy that oversight.
Portal Companion CollectionCompilation / First-Person Platformer / PuzzleA+
tl;drPortal Companion Collection is a Compilation of the physics-based First-Person Platformer / Puzzle games Portal and Portal 2. These are two of the greatest games ever made, and this is a pretty comprehensive port with performance that makes it the best console release these games have ever seen. This is an outstanding package, and its outstanding price of $20 makes it a game that you should absolutely add to your collection if you don’t own it already… and perhaps even if you do.
Shovel Knight: Treasure TroveCompilation / Action-PlatformerA+
tl;drShovel Knight: Treasure Trove is a collection of the Action-Platformer Shovel Knight and all four of its expansions, including Plague of Shadows which is not purchasable separately. Shovel Knight was already a must-have game, but this collection is so jam-packed with value it makes the entire package one of the best games to get on the Nintendo Switch. Unless you have this collection on another platform, you need to get it on your Nintendo Switch.

GameGenreGrade
Ace Attorney AnthologyCompilation / Visual Novel / Graphic AdventureA
tl;drAce Attorney Anthology is a Compilation of two Compilations – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, all combined including the first six mainline games in the series. All of these games are a superb blend of Visual Novel and Graphic Adventure with a fun courtroom drama story. If you’ve never tried this series before, this is a great starting point and a good value.
Ace Attorney Turnabout CollectionCompilation / Visual Novel / Graphic AdventureA
tl;drAce Attorney Turnabout Collection is a Compilation of two Compilations – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, the first three games in the series and the two more recent prequels. All of these games are a superb blend of Visual Novel and Graphic Adventure with a fun courtroom drama story, and the compilation is an excellent value. If you’ve never tried this series before and have an interest, this is an excellent package to bring you into the series.
AlekonFirst-Person Shooter / Misc.A
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre.
Alien: IsolationFirst-Person Stealth / Horror GameA
tl;drAlien: Isolation is a port of the 2014 First-Person Horror game with heavy Stealth elements following Ellen Ripley’s daughter as she investigates her mother’s disappearance. This version adds graphical improvements that actually make it look better than the other console versions, and this is on top of an already-impressive game with a stunning presentation and some great cat-and-mouse gameplay. If you’re a fan of Horror with a Nintendo Switch, consider this game an absolute must-have.
Animal WellMetroidvania / Puzzle-PlatformerA
tl;drAnimal Well is a Metroidvania with strong Puzzle-Platforming elements where players take the role of a small blob in a series of caves and ruins teeming with a variety of fauna and flora that they must explore. This game is a masterpiece of graphical design, audio design, puzzle design, and gameplay design. While it falls just short of perfect due to a few minor annoyances, overall this is a game that should be considered a must-play for fans of either Metroidvanias or Puzzle-Platformers.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney TrilogyCompilation / Visual Novel / Graphic AdventureA
tl;drApollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy is a Compilation of Visual Novel and Graphic Adventure games comprising fourth, fifth, and sixth mainline games in the Ace Attorney series. This bundle is an excellent value with three superb games at their very best, with plenty of extra content. I do think you should play the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy first, but if you liked those games, this bundle is an absolute no-brainer.
Axiom VergeMetroidvaniaA
tl;drAxiom Verge is a Metroidvania that is the closest thing to Super Metroid outside of the Metroid series itself, yet it still maintains its own identity, with its own bizarre alien world, an intriguing plot, and unique powers based on the “glitchy” infection spreading through the game’s world. While the game has a few flaws keeping it from perfection (some control issues and a fairly high difficulty level), it is still a phenomenal game that fans of Metroidvanias absolutely need to get.
Axiom Verge 2MetroidvaniaA
tl;drAxiom Verge 2 is a Metroidvania that is a big departure from the first game, focusing on a new character, with new enemies, a completely different set of abilities, and a compelling new sci-fi plot to follow. This game has excellent exploration, some fun and unique traversal options, and while there are definitely some areas where it could be improved, this is overall a must-play entry in the genre.
Axiom Verge 1 & 2 BundleCompilation / MetroidvaniaA
tl;drAxiom Verge 1 & 2 Bundle is a Compilation of two extraordinary Metroidvania games, and while I highly recommend playing both of these games, you’re not really getting any benefit from buying them together in this bundle, which sells for the same price as both games combined. Still, whichever way you go about getting them, these games are well worth playing, and this is a perfectly fine way to get them both.
Battle Chef Brigade DeluxeAction-Platformer/PuzzleA
tl;drBattle Chef Brigade Deluxe is a delicious combination of color-matching puzzle gameplay and action-platformer that is both unique and a lot of fun. It’s just missing a multiplayer mode to make full use of all of the great gameplay that’s on display here.
Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 Digital BundleCompilation / Spectacle FighterA
tl;drBayonetta and Bayonetta 2 Digital Bundle is a Compilation of the first two Bayonetta games, each of the two being one of the best Spectacle Fighter games ever made. You spend about as much on this bundle as you would buying the games separately using the discount, but this is a good way to get them both in one go and not worry about the confusing way that discount is implemented. You’re not saving more by getting the games this way, but it’s a good value on two phenomenal games regardless.
Borderlands: The Handsome CollectionCompilation / First-Person ShooterA
tl;drBorderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, both phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. In fact, the only thing that keeps me from saying this package is an absolute must-have is the existence of the Borderlands Legendary Collection, which is a much better value as a package. However, even if the Legendary Collection is clearly the better way to go, it doesn’t change that this is a phenomenal collection of must-have games well worth owning on the Nintendo Switch.
Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s BoxCompilation / First-Person Shooter / Graphic Adventure / Visual NovelA
tl;dr Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box is a Compilation containing all six Borderlands games released on the Nintendo Switch thus far, including four First-Person Shooters and two Graphic Adventure/Visual Novel games. All of these games are good, and a few are absolute must-haves. The $150 price tag is steep, but still a good savings… however, when this bundle goes on sale, it is an absolute steal that is definitely worth getting.
Braid, Anniversary EditionPuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;dr Braid is a Puzzle-Platformer about a man trying to undo the problems of his past and reunite with his girlfriend, with this taking the form of a game about manipulating time. As in its original release, this game features some truly incredible puzzle design and a gorgeous presentation that looks even better in this release, and it’s joined by new levels and over 12 hours of commentary. All of this adds up to what is truly the definitive version of an absolute must-play Puzzle-Platformer.
Brothers: A Tale of Two SonsPuzzleA
tl;drBrothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a story-driven character-based Puzzle game where players control a pair of brothers, with each one assigned to a single analog stick and trigger button. The game uses these mechanics in creative ways, and this inventive gameplay and the gorgeous presentation work together to tell a moving story, one strong enough that the game’s $15 price tag for a 3-4 hour game doesn’t seem so unreasonable. If you haven’t played this game yet, you should absolutely give it a try.
Castlevania Advance CollectionCompilation / Metroidvania / Action-PlatformerA
tl;drCastlevania Advance Collection is a Compilation of Castlevania: Dracula X, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. While Dracula X and Harmony both have their flaws, they’re both still solid games well worth playing. However, Circle and especially Aria are absolutely fantastic Metroidvania games that are must-play entries in the genre. Add to all of that a wealth of extra content and options and a wonderful $20 price tag, and you have a collection that is a must-buy for both Castlevania fans and Metroidvania-lovers.
Chained EchoesTurn-Based JRPGA
tl;drChained Echoes is a Turn-Based JRPG that takes inspiration from some of the great classics of the genre, but also innovates on its own in multiple ways, with an inventive character-swapping system, its strategic overdrive system, and its deep and complex character progression mechanics. On top of this, the game’s pixel art visuals look great, and it has some excellent characters and writing. Chained Echoes may be too complex for players new to the JRPG genre, but those who are already familiar with JRPGs should consider this game a must-have.
Crypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch EditionTop-Down Roguelike / Music-RhythmA
tl;drCrypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch Edition is a phenomenal mash-up of the Roguelike and Music-Rhythm genres with a great soundtrack and game design that makes it all too tempting to dance your way back into the dungeon for another punishing attempt at getting just a little farther.
Cytus αMusic-RhythmA
tl;drCytus α is a Music-Rhythm game in the vein of Elite Beat Agents and Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, where players are touching notes on the touchscreen in time with a scrolling metronome-like bar. However, while this game was clearly meant for touchscreen, the controls on a traditional controller are surprisingly good as well. This game has issues with an overly-high challenge level, deserted online servers, confusing menus, and frustrating progression that makes you play to unlock the game’s 200 varied songs, but that hardly matters since the game is so very fun to play. This is a must-have for Music-Rhythm fans on the Switch.
Dead CellsAction-Platformer RoguelikeA
tl;drDead Cells is an action-platformer Roguelike that shines as a great example of all of those elements. It’s damn hard, but always compels you to try to get a little farther after each time you die, and the presentation is a wonderful companion to the likes of the Castlevania series.
DeemoMusic-RhythmA
tl;drDeemo is a wonderful Music-Rhythm game with gameplay that recreates in abstract the feeling of playing a piano. It has a huge selection of music, a good number of options, and some absolutely gorgeous artwork, although the gameplay itself is unfortunately visually bland. While you can play Deemo fine in docked mode, this is a game that’s really designed for handheld play, which may limit its appeal. But if you enjoy Music-Rhythm games, this game is a must-have.
Doom EternalFirst-Person ShooterA
tl;drDoom Eternal on Nintendo Switch is, of course, a huge visual downgrade from other versions of the game, but it still looks great, is perfectly playable, and not only a more ambitious port than Doom 2016, but a far more successful one too. This is a solid version of a truly phenomenal, visually-stunning (yes, even on Nintendo Switch) First-Person Shooter with great, fast-paced action and a clever and inventive online 2-vs-1 multiplayer mode. If you can play this game elsewhere, definitely do. But if Nintendo Switch is your platform of choice, know that Doom Eternal is a must-play First-Person Shooter that doesn’t lose much in its transition to the handheld platform.
Dragon Ball FighterZFighting GameA
tl;drDragon Ball FighterZ is an over-the-top 2D Fighting Game in the same vein as the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, with explosive 3-vs-3 tag-team battles. This game absolutely earns its reputation as one of the best fighting games in years with its absolutely spectacular presentation and excellent deep but accessible gameplay. If you’re a fan of the franchise or just someone who enjoys Fighting games, this game absolutely needs to be in your collection.
Dragon Quest Builders 2Action-RPG / Open-World SandboxA
tl;drDragon Quest Builders 2 is an Action-RPG with an open world and creation elements to it that are very comparable to Minecraft, and an anime style and story that are very much a Dragon Quest thing. That said, this game is much more linear and focused than Minecraft, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Regardless, it is an absolutely superb Action-RPG, and an absolutely superb Open-World game, and fans of either type of game should consider this a must-have.
Fast RMXFuturistic RacingA
tl;drFast RMX is a futuristic racing game that isn’t quite on par with F-Zero, but it comes damn close. It looks absolutely fantastic at blazing speeds, plays well, and although it has a few minor issues, it’s still a spectacular game that every racing game fan with a Switch should own.
Fire Emblem: Three HousesTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA
tl;drFire Emblem: Three Houses is a fantastic Turn-Based Strategy-RPG that mixes the series’ strategic gameplay with a fantastic plot and setting that feels like a mix of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, with deep gameplay that has you bolstering character relationships to build up your team of students over multiple long, rewarding campaigns. The graphics aren’t all that impressive, and sometimes the game isn’t as forthcoming with information as I’d like, but overall this is an absolute must-have entry for fans of the genre, as well as those looking for a game with great story, and also those looking for a game they will be playing for a very, very long time.
GrisPuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;drGris is a puzzle-platformer that seeks not to challenge the player, but guide them through an emotional journey of absolutely beautiful sights and sounds, looking into the soul of a young girl working through a dark time in her life. Don’t play this game if you want a great game, play it if you want an absolutely captivating experience.
Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship EditionMetroidvaniaA
tl;drGuacamelee is a Metroidvania with game progression that ties into your character’s fighting abilities, with your fighting prowess and movement options growing in tandem. It’s also a joyous celebration of color, humor, memorable characters, and great music. This is one of my favorite games in this genre in years.
HadesAction / RoguelikeA
tl;drHades is an Action-packed isometric Roguelike that has you fighting through hordes of enemies with mix-and-match enhancements gifted to you by a cast of Greek gods, with this game’s mythological cast all superbly written and impeccably voice-acted. This game’s marriage of great storytelling, great action, and great mix of Roguelike elements that all tie into each other makes for a phenomenal game. Do not miss it.
Hades IIAction / RoguelikeA
tl;dr Hades II is an excellent follow-up to its predecessor, a fine Action Roguelike with an absolute ton of content, and that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while changing things enough that this feels like a very different sort of game while still fitting in with the original. The Nintendo Switch version is visually the ugliest way to play the game, but it still plays perfectly fine, and if you’re looking to play a truly excellent Action game on the go, this is well worth picking up.
Hellblade: Senua’s SacrificeGraphic Adventure / ActionA
tl;drHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an absolutely fantastic Graphic Adventure that delivers an incredibly immersive experience as players are put in the shoes of someone with severe mental illness on a journey into a hellish fantasy domain. The Switch version isn’t quite as impressive as what’s on other platforms, but it still looks fantastic – one of the best-looking games on the Switch. And while the action sequences aren’t quite up to par with the rest of the game, on the whole this is a superb experience that is a truly must-play game.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of CalamityAction BrawlerA
tl;drHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, like the first Hyrule Warriors game, is a “musou”-style game in the same vein as the Dynasty Wars series. This time, this game ties directly into the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exploring the events that preceded that game in some creative ways. What’s more, the presentation, the visuals and music, the style, and numerous gameplay elements all tie back to Breath of the Wild. On top of that, the split-screen co-op here is absolutely phenomenal. Only a few flaws here (like occasionally repetitive combat and some frequent nasty slowdown) keep this game from true greatness, but even with these flaws this is still an outstanding game that most Switch owners would do well to check out.
InsidePuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;drInside is a Puzzle-Platformer that is the spiritual successor to Limbo, and it improves upon the first game in nearly every way, with stunning and stylish visuals, clever and varied gameplay, and a fascinating and detailed world. The only complaint I have is that the game is tragically short – just 3 or 4 hours long. However, it’s an enthralling 3-4 hours, and if you don’t already have this game on another platform (and don’t mind the game’s gruesome violence), you should absolutely pick this one up.
It Takes Two3D PlatformerA
tl;drIt Takes Two is a 3D Platformer with a co-op focus that requires two players to play. This game’s asymmetrical co-op gameplay is phenomenal, with great level design, puzzle design, and boss design. The story is pretty delightful too, with fun characters and great voice acting, along with some wonderful sound design. If you have a friend to play with, this is an absolute must-have co-op game.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker SagaOpen-World 3D Action-Platformer / Third-Person ShooterA
tl;drLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this game revisiting all nine numbered Star Wars films with entirely new gameplay. This is the LEGO game that gets everything right – the new Third-Person Shooter gameplay helps to bring players closer to the action, the comedy is as great as it’s ever been, the presentation is gorgeous, and the world provides lots of interesting places to explore. This is not just a great LEGO game, it’s a great Star Wars game, and just a great game overall. If you only ever play one Traveller’s Tales LEGO game, this is the one to play.
Luigi’s Mansion 3Puzzle / ActionA
tl;drLuigi’s Mansion 3 is an absolutely gorgeous family-friendly game about Mario’s cowardly brother once again having to save the day by using a vacuum to suck up ghosts in a haunted mansion er, hotel. This game has a stunning presentation, that makes it one of the best-looking games on the Nintendo Switch, as well as excellent gameplay that combines Puzzle and Action elements with exploration in a way that’s truly unique. There are a few areas that could do with improvement, but overall this is absolutely a top-tier game on the Nintendo Switch that everyone who owns the console should consider getting.
Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 + 2Compilation / Action-PlatformerA
tl;drMega Man Legacy Collection 1 + 2 contains the first ten numbered games in the original Mega Man series in a physical release, with nearly all of those games being great, and three of them being absolutely phenomenal. What’s more, this package comes loaded with bonus content, and after initially being overpriced is now a better value than buying the two Legacy Collections separately… at least if you don’t mind the 3.3GB download required to play Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. However, save for that flaw, this is an excellent collection of great games that should be considered a must-have for fans of Action-Platformers.
MinecraftOpen-World Action-RPG / Misc.A
tl;drMinecraft is a family-friendly Open-World sandbox game with Action-RPG elements that has you deconstructing and rebuilding the world at your whim, with endless possibilities for those looking to create or explore. The Nintendo Switch version is not the ideal version of the game, and this version also still bears the bugs that every version of the game seems to have, but it is still a must-play game that’s absolutely worth playing despite this.
Monster Hunter RiseAction-RPGA
tl;drMonster Hunter Rise is the first game in this Action-RPG series designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch, and it incorporates improvements made to the series in Monster Hunter World while adding the game-changing new wirebug and palamute to open up a world of new possibilities in traversal and combat. It’s also absolutely gorgeous, one of the best-looking games on Nintendo Switch, and it is an extremely rewarding experience with excellent online co-op play. It’s still a game that’s going to be intimidating for more casual players, and it still bears some of the common flaws of the series, but players who can push through those flaws will find this game to be a must-have on the console.
MoonlighterTop-Down Roguelike Action-RPG / Management SimA
tl;drMoonlighter is an experience somewhere in between a game like Zelda and a game like Stardew Valley, where you balance dungeon raids and shop management. What that amounts to is an addictive experience that’s greater than the sum of its parts, and a game that should be played by fans of either genre.
NevaAction-PlatformerA
tl;dr Neva is a stunning Action-Platformer about a woman and her adopted white wolf cub fighting off an evil corruption. The gameplay here is good, and more substantial than this developer’s previous work, Gris. But the focus here is still on the absolutely beautiful presentation. In any case, this is a stunning game that is absolutely not to be missed.
New Pokemon SnapFirst-Person On-Rails Shooter / Misc.A
tl;drNew Pokemon Snap is just about everything fans could want from a sequel to the N64 classic, and improves on the original in numerous ways while still remaining faithful to its formula. This is a beautiful family-friendly On-Rails First-Person Shooter that has you snapping photos of Pokemon, testing your skill with the lens and your ingenuity with other tools at your disposal to capture the best pictures. Its lack of exploration and laid-back nature may not be for everyone, and there are areas where it could still be improved further, but overall this is a marvelous experience that every Pokemon fan will likely want to have.
Octopath TravelerTurn-Based JRPGA
tl;drOctopath Traveler is a JRPG that mixes old-school game design with refreshing new elements to make for something truly unique and distinctive. While it could have done more with its “eight stories” concept, what’s here is nevertheless an excellent game that fans of the genre should absolutely play.
Octopath Traveler IITurn-Based JRPGA
tl;drOctopath Traveler II is a Turn-Based JRPG that follows a new cast of eight characters who each have their own (sadly mostly separate) stories. There are multiple gameplay improvements here, and while there are certainly some rough edges and flaws, overall this is still a must-play game for fans of the genre.
Ori and the Will of the WispsMetroidvaniaA
tl;drOri and the Will of the Wisps is an outstanding sequel that improves on the first game in multiple areas, and changes enough things to make it distinct, although many of its best qualities are carried over from the first game. The Nintendo Switch version has a few technical issues, but overall this is still a gorgeous, incredibly fun, must-have Metroidvania.
Overcooked Special EditionArcade / PartyA
tl;drOvercooked is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. It’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch.
Overcooked! 2Arcade / PartyA
tl;drOvercooked 2, like the first game, is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. And like the first game, it’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch, with subtle improvements throughout that give it a slight edge over the original.
Overcooked! All You Can EatCompilation / Arcade / Party GameA
tl;dr Overcooked! All You Can Eat is a Compilation containing enhanced versions of the first two Overcooked games, both family-friendly Arcade-style Party Games with a strong focus on co-op play. While I don’t think the Overcooked games have quite managed to maintain their legendary status as the years have passed, these are still two of the best co-op games ever made, and this package adds multiple features, enhancements, and new content to ensure that this is the definitive version of both games, all at a very reasonable price. I wouldn’t recommend this for players who already own both Overcooked games, but for anyone else who enjoys co-op gameplay, this is absolutely worth getting.
Persona 5 RoyalTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA
tl;drPersona 5 Royal is a Turn-Based Monster-Collecting JRPG, and a game that is rightly praised as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. The game has an amazing visual style that is unforgettable, a wonderful jazzy soundtrack, a gripping story with memorable characters, a fun and engaging combat system, and tons of things to do outside of combat. The Nintendo Switch version unfortunately takes a hit in its graphics, but this is a small flaw in an otherwise absolutely must-have game.
Pikmin 3 DeluxeReal-Time Strategy / Action-RPGA
tl;drPikmin 3 Deluxe is an outstanding and unique spin on the Real-Time Strategy genre that puts the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat, and this version of the game adds a slew of new features, including multiple good control options, and more extensive co-op play that I would argue is the absolute highlight of the game. Unless you played the original version of this game on Wii U and have zero interest in the new co-op play, consider this a game that you absolutely should not miss.
Pikmin 4Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPGA
tl;drPikmin 4 is the long-awaited (10 years!) fourth mainline entry in Nintendo’s unique series of Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG hybrid games that have you controlling an insect-sized space explorer commanding an army of ant-plant creatures. This sequel massively improves on prior entries in the series in numerous areas that both open up the game and make it more accessible, and it is visually-gorgeous as well. It’s just a shame that a few of the changes here add in some unfortunate flaws as well, and the lack of a full campaign co-op mode is a disappointing step backwards in a game that is otherwise all massive steps forward for the series. While it falls just short of Pikmin perfection, this is nevertheless an outstanding game, and one I highly recommend to all Nintendo Switch owners.
Prince of Persia: The Lost CrownMetroidvaniaA
tl;dr Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a Metroidvania that does virtually everything exceptionally well. Great Platforming, fantastic combat, a huge and interesting location to explore, excellent visuals, a wonderfully atmospheric soundtrack, superb voice acting, a compelling story and characters, and the Nintendo Switch version of the game sacrifices very little. While in every area it falls just short of perfection, that it excels in just about everything makes it one of the best games the Metroidvania genre has ever received. Do not miss it.
Rocket LeagueRacing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.)A
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch.
Shovel Knight: Shovel of HopeAction-PlatformerA
tl;drShovel Knight: Shovel of Hope is an Action-Platformer that is the first game in the Shovel Knight series. It melds together some of the best parts of classic NES games to create something that is surprisingly original and nostalgic at the same time. Fans of platformers in general absolutely should have this game in their collection.
Splatoon 2Third-Person ShooterA
tl;drSplatoon 2 is a Third-Person Shooter that takes a refreshing approach to the genre, where splatting the area with your color of ink is just as important as taking out enemies. While the game isn’t without its annoying problems, it looks great, plays great, has plenty of variety of weapons and game modes, and will suck you in for hours at a time.
Splatoon 3Third-Person ShooterA
tl;drSplatoon 3 is a multiplayer-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter that adds a bunch of new content, new features, and new improvements on top of what we saw in Splatoon 1 and 2, yet it still feels like much the same sort of experience. To be clear, that experience is an outstanding Third-Person Shooter that looks great, plays great, and is truly unique within the genre… except, well, that’s just it, it’s not completely unique – Splatoon 2 is right there, on the same platform. Still, even if it feels in many ways like “more of the same”, it’s more of the same of something great, and the improvements mean that this is the best Splatoon game yet. Just know that if you didn’t care for earlier games in the series, Splatoon 3 isn’t going to change your mind.
Stardew ValleyTop-Down Action-RPG / Management SimA
tl;drStardew Valley is a “Farming RPG” much like Harvest Moon, but there’s a huge wealth of stuff to do here, with a charming presentation, a constant stream of new things to change up the experience, and even a wonderful online co-op mode. If you want a fun, mellow experience on the Switch, consider this game a must-have.
Steamworld Dig 2PlatformerA
tl;drSteamworld Dig 2, like the first game, is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mine shaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. However, this sequel improves on the first game in just about every way, with more player options, more varied environments, and a longer campaign with a more interesting story. This is a must-have for fans of Platformers, and a no-brainer for anyone who enjoyed the first game.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s FuryCompilation / 3D Platformer / Open-WorldA
tl;drSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers – an upscaled and much-improved port of Super Mario 3D World, and the all-new Open-World game Bowser’s Fury. On their own, each wouldn’t hold a candle to Mario’s best adventures – 3D World isn’t nearly as ambitious as Odyssey or Galaxy, and Bowser’s Fury is too short. However, combined they come very close to that same level of quality, and the resulting package is a must-have for Mario fans.
Super Mario Maker 2PlatformerA
tl;drSuper Mario Maker 2, like its predecessor, is a Mario level creator that’s a creative gamer’s dream, and those who aren’t creative will have a huge wealth of content to enjoy. Even a half a year later the online play is still terrible, and it feels like for every two improvements this game makes it loses one feature from the first game, but overall this is still an excellent game every Mario fan should get.
Super Mario RPGIsometric Turn-Based JRPGA
tl;dr Super Mario RPG is a remake of the 1996 classic SNES Isometric Turn-Based JRPG that’s extremely faithful to the original while adding completely modernized graphics and music, as well as new gameplay features. This is a great remake of a great game, and while it’s somewhat short and easy for a JRPG, it is so enjoyable throughout its 12-20 hour adventure that any fan of the genre should consider it a must-have, and players wanting to try their first RPG should consider this an excellent entry point. Either way, this game is outstanding.
SuperhotFirst-Person ShooterA
tl;drSuperhot is a First-Person Shooter where time slows down to a crawl unless you’re moving. It’s an inspired and unique entry into the genre, and the port to the Nintendo Switch is virtually flawless. I wish the game’s main campaign was longer, but there’s still plenty to do here, and it’s all immensely enjoyable. If you’re a fan of First-Person Shooters, this game is a must-have.
Tents and TreesPicross-style PuzzleA
tl;drTents and Trees is a type of family-friendly Puzzle that’s somewhat similar to Picross, albeit with slightly different rules. While this iteration of Tents and Trees doesn’t do anything that’s particularly revolutionary, every single part of this game is polished and high in quality, from the great gameplay, good amount of content, and excellent features, to the classy visuals and wonderfully relaxing soundtrack. If you’re looking for a wonderful Puzzle game to chill with, this is an absolutely ideal choice.
The Great Ace Attorney ChroniclesCompilation / Visual Novel / Graphic AdventureA
tl;drThe Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a Compilation of two Victorian-era prequels in the Ace Attorney series previously only released in Japan, combining the series’ trademark courtroom drama gameplay with a new setting, new characters, new gameplay elements, outstanding graphics and a superb soundtrack, all at a great value. There are a few elements here that don’t quite work as well as they could, but overall, this is a must-have game in the Visual Novel genre, and even if you’re not a fan of the genre you’ll want to give this game a look if you enjoy courtroom dramas.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of WisdomTop-Down Action-RPGA
tl;dr The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a Top-Down Action-RPG that combines elements of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to make for something that’s truly unique and wonderful within the series, befitting Zelda’s first mainline adventure as the main protagonist. The new echo mechanic, while not quite as groundbreaking as Tears’ Ultrahand, is still inspired, and the puzzle design and boss design is phenomenal. This may not be quite at the same level as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but it is still an absolute must-play game.
The Stanley Parable: Ultra DeluxeWalking SimulatorA
tl;drThe Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a port of the decade-old critically-acclaimed fourth wall-breaking Walking Simulator that updates the visuals and adds some surprisingly clever new content that makes this game worth a look even for players who previously played through earlier versions of the game. This is still every bit as funny, rule-breaking, and creative as it was when it first released. In fact, with what’s been added here, it is arguably even more so. Do not miss it.
The Talos Principle: Deluxe EditionFirst-Person PuzzleA
tl;drThe Talos Principle is a First-Person Puzzle that has players pointing jamming devices at electronic gates and gun turrets while contemplating the meaning of existence. While the quiet, contemplative, philosophical plot may not appeal to quite as many players as Portal’s humor and wit, those who can appreciate it will find this game’s story to be highly engrossing. And pretty much anyone who can enjoy a really good puzzle will find this game’s puzzles to be some of the best to be found in this sort of game. What’s more, this is a solid port to the Switch, and a game perfectly-suited to the platform. If you’re a fan of Puzzle games who doesn’t already own this game on another platform, consider this a must-have.
TowerFallAction-Platformer / ArcadeA
tl;drTowerFall has up to six players in a furious battle shooting arrows at one another or teaming up against enemies in a challenging and rewarding action-packed experience with a fantastic presentation, and with exclusive content that makes the Switch version of the game the definitive way to play it. It’s a bit on the tough side, but if you enjoy skill-based platforming and especially if you want to play with friends, TowerFall is absolutely a game you should own.
UnsightedAction-RPGA
tl;drUnsighted is an Action-RPG where players take the role of a humanoid automaton fighting a horde of the titular mindless robotic enemies to try to save her people. This game expertly combines elements of some of the best Action-RPG and Metroidvania games, with some really great exploration, puzzles, combat, crafting, and tons of secrets to find. And while some of the game’s default elements are brutally difficult, there are also numerous options so players can customize the experience to their own personal challenge level. The result is a phenomenal game that’s an absolute must-play regardless of whether you’re a challenge-seeker or simply want a wonderful, unique adventure.
VoezMusic-RhythmA
tl;drVoez is an absolutely joyous Music-Rhythm game, with fun and simple gameplay, and a wide variety of music. While you can play it fine in docked mode, this is a game that’s really designed for handheld play, which may limit its appeal, but if you enjoy Music-Rhythm games, you owe it to yourself to try this one.
WargrooveTurn-Based StrategyA
tl;drWargroove is a Turn-Based Strategy game that is a damn near perfect spiritual successor to Advance Wars. This game is absolutely loaded with features, and should be considered a must-have for any fan of strategy games.
Wargroove 2Turn-Based StrategyA
tl;drWargroove 2 is a Turn-Based Strategy game which, like the previous Wargroove, clearly takes its inspiration from Nintendo’s Advance Wars series, albeit with a medieval fantasy setting and a wealth of features and improvements over what Nintendo has on offer. This sequel makes multiple small improvements, such as a new Roguelike-esque Conquest mode, but mostly this is more of the same sublime Turn-Based Strategy gameplay we saw in the first game. And in improving on one of the best games in the genre, Wargroove 2 has arguably become the new king of the genre on Nintendo Switch. Plus, with the game costing only $20, Strategy fans will absolutely want to get their hands on this game.
X-Morph DefenseTower Defense / Two-Stick ShooterA
tl;drX-Morph: Defense mixes the Tower Defense genre with the Two-Stick Shooter to create something even better, with impressively detailed environments and some really inventive gameplay. This game is a blast to play, and while the Switch version is sadly missing some features, it’s still an absolutely wonderful game.
Yoku’s Island ExpressMetroidvania / PinballA
tl;drYoku’s Island Express is a Metroidvania Pinball game that puts you in the role of a cartoony dung beetle lugging around a big round rock as he delivers mail across a huge and complex island set up like a gigantic pinball machine. It’s an odd combination of elements that works amazingly well, heightened by a beautiful presentation and an overall joyful experience throughout. Definitely give this game a look.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible LairPlatformerA
tl;drYooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a family-friendly 2D Platformer in the style of the Donkey Kong Country games. While it never quite reaches the excellence of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, it is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, with amazing graphics and sound, and solid gameplay. It even adds a few original ideas of its own, such as a wonderful overworld area with lots of puzzles and exploration, and alternate versions of every level that provide a completely different experience. While it’s not without its faults, it is still one of the best Platforming experiences on the Switch, and well worth playing.
Yoshi’s Crafted WorldPlatformerA
tl;drYoshi’s Crafted World is a family-friendly Platformer that takes the series’ gameplay into a world made of cardboard and other crafting materials, making the entire game look like you’re playing through a child’s diorama. The game really explores this idea well, using it for all sorts of interesting surprises and twists on the gameplay, with some good co-op play and a low challenge level making it ideal for youngsters while still giving more seasoned players challenges to pursue. It’s not perfect, but even so it’s the best game in the Yoshi series since Yoshi’s Island, and a must-have for fans of Platformers.

A-

GameGenreGrade
1000xResistGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr 1000xResist is a Graphic Adventure with a story about… well, piecing together what’s going on is a part of the experience, I think. Suffice it to say, this game tackles both massive world-spanning topics and small, intimate topics with writing, characters, and voice acting that’s truly outstanding. The visuals have some issues, and the story’s disjointed nature will likely be confusing for some players. There is also a fair amount of triggering topic matter here. However, those who can tolerate these things will find this game to be an extremely original and highly rewarding experience.
A Robot Named FightMetroidvania / RoguelikeA-
tl;drA Robot Named Fight is a combination of a Metroidvania that is very clearly trying to be like Super Metroid, and a Roguelike with randomized level design, permadeath, and the gradual unlocking of upgrades. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of Super Metroid, but it’s still an engaging experience that fans of the genre should definitely check out.
A Short HikeOpen-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drA Short Hike is a family-friendly Open-World Action-RPG, albeit one without enemies, dungeons, hit points, or a significant level of challenge, and one that’s smaller than most open worlds. Still, despite this, and despite how short the game is, it is an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Superb writing, a beautiful soundtrack, a memorable visual art style, and wonderful exploration-focused gameplay all make this a hike that, while short, is one well worth taking.
Aaero: Complete EditionMusic-Rhythm / On-Rails ShooterA-
tl;drAaero is a Music-Rhythm game with On-Rails Shooter elements that plays like a more musical version of Rez, with elements of other music-rhythm games added in, ultimately making this game stand alone as a fairly unique entry in the genre. It could do with a bit more content and a few other minor adjustments, but overall this is a fantastic Music-Rhythm game that genre fans should not miss out on.
Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot CampCompilation / Turn-Based StrategyA-
tl;drAdvance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp is a compilation of remakes of the Game Boy Advance Turn-Based Strategy games Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. These are two phenomenal games, and the revitalized presentation looks great. However, there are some important features that are missing here, and in particular this game looks especially feature-poor next to the highly-similar game, Wargroove. I do still highly recommend Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp, but between the two titles I think Wargroove is the better choice.
AggelosMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drAggelos is a Metroidvania game that doesn’t really innovate, but nevertheless delivers an absolutely superb experience with gameplay elements reminiscent of Zelda II, Castlevania II and other classic NES games, but with today’s great gameplay and game design. Well worth owning for fans of the genre.
AI: The Somnium FilesGraphic Adventure / Visual NovelA-
tl;drAI: The Somnium Files is a game that’s part Graphic Adventure, part Visual Novel, that has the player investigating a gruesome murder using a futuristic augmented eye, an AI partner, and Inception-style dream-invasion tech. It’s a game with a fantastic story and presentation, and some wildly inventive puzzles in the Somnium sections of the game, and even though the gameplay in the rest of the game isn’t quite as engaging, this is all-around still an excellent game that really draws you into its world and makes you want to find out more about its characters and story.
Among UsParty GameA-
tl;drAmong Us is a Party game similar to classic social games like Werewolf and Mafia, where players try to figure out which of the others among them are murderous impostors before it’s too late. The port to Nintendo Switch is quite good, includes cross-play, and has controls I strongly prefer over other versions. The barrier for entry here is still a bit high thanks to the sort of conditions you need to get a proper game going, but the small $5 price tag and the massive amount of fun on offer here when this game really gets going make it more than worth the trouble to round up enough friends to play it properly. If you can manage to do that, this game is an absolute must-play.
and RogerInteractive StoryA-
tl;dr and Roger is an Interactive Story whose story and gameplay I dare not get into too much detail on for fear of spoiling it for you. Just know that the gameplay is wholly in service to the story, which is a moving experience, if a brief one that’s over within an hour or so. However, for only $5, I think this is well worth experiencing, if you don’t mind a story that can be heart-wrenching.
Ape OutTop-Down ActionA-
tl;drApe Out is a fantastic action game that’s a hidden gem in the Switch’s game library. While the gameplay is a bit simplistic, the presentation is top-notch and makes this a fun, unique, and memorable experience.
ARMS3D Fighting GameA-
tl;drARMS is a wildly unique 3D Fighting Game that plays like nothing else out there, with players focusing less on skillful moves and more on position and timing as they try to land punches on each other using stretchy arms. It is a surprisingly fun experience, and one that looks great and plays great, including in its 4-Player split-screen mode and in online matches. If you want a great competitive game on your Switch and don’t mind something that’s weird and takes some time getting used to, this is a must-have.
Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel CollectionCompilation / Stealth / Open-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drAssassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection is a compilation of improved ports of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, although not quite as improved as the versions of these games other platforms got. Still, these games are both solid ports that largely lack the flaws the Nintendo Switch port of Assassin’s Creed III had, and they’re better games too, with Assassin’s Creed IV in particular being an absolute joy of a swashbuckling tale that remains not only one of the highlights of the entire franchise, but also a great entry point for newcomers to the series. This is an absolute must-own collection of games, and the Nintendo Switch version is an excellent version of the game.
Assault Android Cactus+2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drAssault Android Cactus is a 2-Stick Shooter that has some fun, unique mechanics and a lot of great, intense action. It’s a blast to play in co-op, and the Switch version is the definitive version of the game. I only wish the sub-weapon dodge-swapping mechanic was better-utilized, and the levels looked more distinct. But those are minor complaints about what is a fantastic game on the Switch.
Astalon: Tears of the EarthMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drAstalon is a retro-style Metroidvania with a great presentation, a fantastic chiptune soundtrack, a clever character-swapping mechanic, wonderful level design, and some nice Roguelike elements. The high challenge level may put off some players, but overall this is a delightful entry in the genre that fans of this sort of game would do well to play.
Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & The Secret HideoutJRPGA-
tl;drAtelier Ryza is the first game in the eighth series of Atelier games (the Secret series), a franchise of JRPGs with a focus on crafting. Ryza is leaps and bounds beyond prior games in the series, both in terms of the quality of its gameplay, its wonderful characters and story, and in its absolutely gorgeous presentation. This is not just a great Atelier game, this is a great, must-play JRPG, full stop. It is only some frustrating graphical issues and a few confusing gameplay elements that keep this from being a contender for the title of best JRPG on Nintendo Switch.
Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & The Secret FairyJRPGA-
tl;drAtelier Ryza 2 is the second game in the eighth series of Atelier games (the Secret series), a franchise of JRPGs with a focus on crafting. Ryza 2 builds on the story and gameplay of the first Atelier Ryza game, weaving a more mature tale in which the first game’s characters have matured some, adding new elements to the ATB-infused combat system, and bringing back the larger, more open-areas the series hasn’t seen since Atelier Firis. However, these improvements are balanced out by the graphical issues this series had faced on the Nintendo Switch that in Ryza 2 have now become too distracting to ignore. While this is still a superb JRPG, these issues keep it from surpassing its predecessor.
Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret KeyJRPGA-
tl;drAtelier Ryza 3 is the third game in the eighth series of Atelier games (the Secret series), a franchise of JRPGs with a focus on crafting. The third and (apparently) final installment in the Ryza series is much bigger in scope and adds new gameplay elements on top of what was in the prior games, but at the same time it also seems somewhat less-polished, and doesn’t quite have the “wow factor” that the original Atelier Ryza did. This is still a solid addition to the series, and a must-play for those who enjoyed the prior two games.
AVICII InvectorMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drAVICII Invector is a Music-Rhythm game that has you moving down a rotating corridor in a spaceship and hitting notes in time with the late artist’s music. This game has fantastic graphics and a great soundtrack, and while there are areas here and there that could do with some tweaking, overall this is a must-have game for Music-Rhythm fans.
Baba Is YouPuzzleA-
tl;drBaba Is You is a character-based puzzle game with wildly inventive mechanics that have you pushing around words to change the rules that the game follows. While the presentation leaves something to be desired, the gameplay here is so absolutely inspired that it really should be played by anyone looking for something new and different, especially fans of puzzle games.
Backpack HeroRoguelike / Turn-Based RPG / Management SimulationA-
tl;dr Backpack Hero is a game that combines Roguelike, Turn-Based RPG, and Management Simulation elements, with a strong emphasis on organizing equipment in your backpack for the most effective results in battle. The way this game takes a classic RPG mechanic and expands on it to make it such a major element of the gameplay here is absolutely inspired. There are a few areas where this game could do with a bit more work, but overall this game is an absolute delight, and one that is definitely worth a look for fans of RPGs and Roguelikes.
BalatroTurn-Based Card RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;dr Balatro is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike that starts with a standard deck of poker cards that players gradually trade out and upgrade, aiming to keep racking up increasingly high scores to get as far as they can. While this game has a few rough spots, overall this is a brilliant mix of accessibility and exquisitely-crafted gameplay that puts it on par with the likes of Slay the Spire as the best this genre has to offer. This is an absolute must-play for any fans of this genre.
Ball x PitArcade / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike / SimulationA-
tl;drBall x Pit is a game that blends a wide variety of disparate genres, such as 2-Stick Shooter, Arcade, Roguelike, and Management Simulation, resulting in something that is wildly unique, offering a lot of depth, yet still highly-accessible and easy to pick up. Consider this a must-have if you’re craving originality, and something still worth checking out even if you just like some of the genres I named.
BayonettaSpectacle FighterA-
tl;drBayonetta is a Spectacle Fighter like Devil May Cry, and it is arguably one of the best games in its genre, with amazing fighting mechanics, a lot of variety, and overall extremely fun gameplay, so long as you’re not bothered by the extremely sexualized main character. There are a few minor graphical issues with this version, but overall it’s much-improved over the Wii U version. All in all, a must-have game for fans of the genre.
Beacon PinesGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drBeacon Pines is a Graphic Adventure game set in a rural town filled with anthropomorphized animals where players follow a young boy trying to uncover the town’s mysteries. This game features a well-told story with wonderful characters, a gorgeous art style, a beautiful soundtrack, and a clever but accessible “charm” and “turning point” mechanic that all make this a must-play game for fans of the genre. The only major flaw I can point to is text that’s at times difficult to read, but it’s worth putting up with this issue because the rest of the game is so delightful.
Bioshock Infinite: The Complete EditionFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drBioshock Infinite takes this First-Person Shooter series to the skyward city of Columbia, resulting in what I believe to be the best story, the best world-building, the best visuals, and the best gameplay in the series. The Nintendo Switch version runs well, but has the most visual cutbacks made to it out of the entire Bioshock trilogy compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 counterparts. Even so, this is a phenomenal First-Person Shooter that still looks and plays great on the Switch, and it’s an absolute must-play game for fans of the genre, especially if you don’t already have it on another platform.
Blaster Master ZeroMetroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drBlaster Master Zero is a remake/reboot of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic Action-packed Metroidvania that I would argue is superior to the original, modernizing it and making it a far more playable game by today’s standards. There are still areas where it could do with improvement, but overall this is a phenomenal Metroidvania that straddles the line between old-school and modern design brilliantly.
Blaster Master Zero 2Metroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drLike its predecessor, Blaster Master Zero 2 is an Action-packed Metroidvania in the same style of the original Nintendo Entertainment System game, although this game is completely new, building on the formula laid down in Blaster Master Zero while adding new gameplay elements that are worked into the game’s design and really do a good job of improving the overall experience. This game does still suffer the same flaws its predecessor had, but overall it’s a better experience, and a fantastic game fans of Metroidvanias and Action games should give a try.
Blaster Master Zero IIIMetroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drBlaster Master Zero III is the third and purportedly final entry in this trilogy of reboot Metroidvania/Top-Down Action games inspired by the 1988 classic, and I would argue that it is the best in the series, taking everything that was great about Blaster Master Zero 2 and improving on it with more cohesive Metroidvania elements, subtle quality-of-life improvements, and overall better progression, with the same great gameplay and retro-style presentation. While not without its flaws, overall if you’re looking for a modern game that channels the spirit of the best that the 8- and 16-bit era had to offer, you should definitely grab this game.
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping KingTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drBlossom Tales is a Top-Down Action-RPG that does a phenomenal job of copying the Zelda formula, looking and playing much like a long-lost Zelda game. It’s short and a bit lacking in originality, but what’s here is still top-notch.
Borderlands: Game of the Year EditionFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drBorderlands is a First-Person Shooter that combines the genre with gameplay progression comparable to something like Diablo, and the result is one of the best co-op experiences you will ever find, both locally and online. While the Nintendo Switch version has some compromises made to its visuals and its split-screen co-op drops down from 4 players to 2, this game still plays great, and it’s an absolute must-have for fans of First-Person Shooters and especially for fans of co-op.
Bravely Default IITurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drBravely Default II is a Turn-Based JRPG that’s technically the third game in the series, but features a completely original story, characters, and world. That story may be somewhat formulaic, but it is well-written, with excellent characters, wonderful voice acting, great music, and solid visuals (though the art style for the characters may not be for everyone). The brave/default combat mechanic and a great job class system keep the gameplay interesting, even if they don’t revolutionize the genre. All things considered, this is a must-have for RPG fans on Nintendo Switch.
Bug Fables: The Everlasting SaplingTurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drBug Fables is a family-friendly Turn-Based RPG made in the style of the first two Paper Mario games, featuring similar gameplay and presentation. The RPG elements here are solid, and the game’s story is wonderful, with some truly memorable characters. However, I feel like the desire to make this game like Paper Mario kept it from striking out on its own, with elements like platforming that simply aren’t very good. This is still a superb RPG, though.
Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch EditionFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drBulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition is an over-the-top testosterone-fueled sci-fi First-Person Shooter filled with tons of variety and lots of fun action. It is also a phenomenal port, graphically stunning on the Switch, although sadly the game lacks multiplayer and doesn’t have gyro aiming. Still, despite these omissions, this is a must-have for Switch owners looking for a fun First-Person Shooter.
Burnout Paradise RemasteredOpen-World Arcade RacingA-
tl;drBurnout Paradise Remastered is a solid port to the Nintendo Switch of an excellent Open-World Arcade-style Racing Game, though the game does show its age somewhat, and the open-world elements detract from some elements of the series like the crash mode and multiplayer. At its new price point of $30, it’s still more expensive than other versions of the game, but this price tag is far more palatable, and Burnout Paradise is such a fantastic racing game that Nintendo Switch racing fans should consider it a must-have.
Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer Featuring The Legend of ZeldaTop-Down Roguelike / Music-RhythmA-
tl;drCadence of Hyrule does an excellent job combining the gameplay of Crypt of the Necrodancer and The Legend of Zelda, and pairing it with an excellent soundtrack… although not without a few issues cropping up here and there. On the whole, it’s still a solid game fans of both series should enjoy.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker3D Puzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drCaptain Toad Treasure Tracker is a game where players guide the titular non-jumping character through numerous levels that are each like little puzzle boxes. The puzzles are clever, and the presentation is solid, and this is overall a fantastic puzzle game, although it’s not without a few annoyances.
Castle Crashers RemasteredArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drCastle Crashers Remastered is a port of the 2008 Arcade Brawler with updated visuals, all previously-released DLC, and a new game mode. Well, the new game mode is terrible, but the core game is still as great as ever, and fans of the genre who haven’t already played this game to death on other platforms should consider this one a must-have.
CastleStormTower Defense / ArcadeA-
tl;drCastleStorm is a side-scrolling Tower Defense game with Arcade-style gameplay elements where players can customize their own castle and then war with opponents in other castles, commanding troops and firing using a ballista to control the battlefield. This is a game that gives players a lot of freedom to make strategic choices, and does a good job making them easy to understand through the game’s campaign. What’s more, this is a fantastic multiplayer game both in co-op and competitive play, local and online (though the online lobbies are empty now), and the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with its excellent touchscreen controls in portable mode. If you enjoy Strategy games and don’t already have this on another platform, you should absolutely give it a try.
Castlevania Anniversary CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerA-
tl;drCastlevania Anniversary Collection is a collection of Action-Platformers that includes eight of the great games from early in the series (well, six great games plus two crappy Game Boy games). This collection gives players a wealth of options and bonus content, and is… actually pretty ideal for a collection of some of the best Action-Platformers ever made. This title is a must for fans of the genre.
Castlevania Dominus CollectionCompilation / Metroidvania / Action-PlatformerA-
tl;dr Castlevania Dominus Collection is a Compilation containing three Metroidvania-style games in the Castlevania series from Nintendo DS, along with the arcade Action-Platformer Haunted Castle and a brand new remake of that game, Haunted Castle Revisited. The original Haunted Castle is clunky and dated, but everything else here ranges from good to outstanding, with Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow being one of the best games in the franchise. This collection does a good job with the dual-screen and touchscreen elements of the original games, and adds a bunch of features and bonus content, overall making for a great package that’s a must-have for any fans of Metroidvania games and the Castlevania series specifically.
Castlevania Collections BundleCompilation / Action-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;dr Castlevania Collections Bundle includes three bundles of Castlevania Action-Platformers: Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Castlevania Advance Collection, and Castlevania Dominus Collection, collectively containing seventeen Action-Platformers and Metroidvania games. The overall level of quality here is extremely high, with very few stinkers, and overall this bundle represents an absolutely massive amount of great gameplay. However, definitely compare the price in this bundle to the sale prices of the individual Collections contained within, as you might get a better deal getting the individual games, depending on the current sale.
Chicory: A Colorful TaleTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drChicory is a family-friendly Top-Down Action-RPG in the style of old-school Zelda games, albeit with more of a focus on puzzles, exploration, and characters than on combat. Chicory is absolutely charming and full of personality, with a delightful presentation, a lovely soundtrack, and some creative gameplay elements. The Nintendo Switch version even has some outstanding optional gyroscopic motion controls (though it’s a tradeoff that also comes with some nasty slowdown at times). There are some gameplay elements here that don’t quite mesh together well, but overall this is an outstanding game that should be considered a Must-Play for anyone who would enjoy a relaxed adventure.
Child of Light: Ultimate EditionTurn-Based RPG / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drChild of Light is an outstanding RPG with Metroidvania elements. There’s a lot of inventive gameplay here, but it’s the game’s dreamy, somber audiovisual presentation that steals the show. And while the game’s story isn’t quite as strong as the rest of the package, this game is still an absolute treat for RPG fans.
Children of MortaTop-Down Roguelike Action-RPGA-
tl;drChildren of Morta is a co-op Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays much like Diablo, but instead of loot, the game uses a Roguelike system that has players playing as different members of a family in a way that enhances both the game’s story and its mechanics. While there are areas that could do with improvement, on the whole this is a wonderful Action-RPG and a fantastic co-op experience that fans of the genre should absolutely give a try.
CindersVisual NovelA-
tl;drCinders is a Visual Novel that takes the classic Cinderella story and breathes new life into it with excellent writing, three-dimensional interpretations of the old story’s characters, and choices that actually matter to the flow of the story. There’s nothing truly revolutionary here to change the Visual Novel genre, but rather a game that makes use of the genre to its fullest, and anyone who enjoys a good, well-told story should absolutely give it a look.
CocoonIsometric Action-RPG / PuzzleA-
tl;dr Cocoon is an Isometric Action-RPG with a strong emphasis on the game’s mind-bending puzzle design, where players control an alien insect and figure out how to use strange technology, including spheres containing their own worlds. The puzzle design here is outstanding, the boss battles are wonderful, and while this game has a few minor annoyances, overall this is a wonderful experience well worth playing, especially for puzzle fans.
Collection of ManaCompilation / Action-RPGA-
tl;drCollection of Mana is a compilation of 3 classic Zelda-style Action-Adventure games, two of which are phenomenal titles with superb music and great co-op gameplay that have withstood the test of time and are arguably two of the best games the genre has ever seen (and Final Fantasy Adventure has its good qualities too). However, the lack of extras and absurd price tag makes it hard to give this collection the enthusiastic recommendation it would otherwise deserve.
Core KeeperOpen-World Top-Down Action-RPG / Survival AdventureA-
tl;drCore Keeper is an Open-World Top-Down Action-RPG with Survival Adventure elements that has players digging through a vast underground world, exploring and discovering new treasures, mysteries, and dangers. For players who enjoy games like Minecraft and Terraria, this should be considered a must-have, and fans of Action-RPGs in general should give this a look too – its well-crafted and varied gameplay and its wonderful presentation make for something truly special.
CrossCodeTop-Down Action-RPG / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drCrossCode is an Action-RPG that combines the melee combat and RPG elements of classics of the genre with fast-paced 2-Stick Shooter action, and pairs it with a wonderful world to explore. There are places where this game could be improved, but overall this is a phenomenal entry in the genre, and Action-RPG fans should definitely take notice.
Crysis 3 RemasteredFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drCrysis 3 Remastered is an absolute marvel of a First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, featuring some of the best graphics on the platform, with visuals and performance that far outpaces prior console versions of the game. What’s more, the gameplay has been much-improved over previous entries in the series, with better enemy AI, improved stealth, better pacing and variety. This is an absolute must-have First-Person Shooter campaign. It’s a shame the Nintendo Switch version drops the multiplayer mode that was in the original, but in all other respects, this is a spectacular port to Nintendo’s handheld, and absolutely worth a look for any fans of the genre.
Crysis Remastered TrilogyCompilation / First-Person ShooterA-
tl;drCrysis Remastered Trilogy is a Compilation of phenomenal ports of three solid First-Person Shooters that are still visually stunning, outpacing prior console releases of the series. These games are a marvel to see running this well on Nintendo Switch, and only the lack of the original games’ multiplayer and a few other minor issues make this anything less than a trilogy of perfect ports. And at $50, this Compilation is an absolute steal, and any fan of First-Person Shooters on the Nintendo Switch should absolutely give this package a look.
CupheadAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drCuphead is an Action-Platformer like Contra and Metal Slug where you’re firing tons of bullets and dodging enemy attacks, but what really makes this game special is its absolutely gorgeous hand-drawn animation and its high difficulty level. Not to be missed.
Dandy Dungeon – Legend of Brave Yamada –Puzzle / RPGA-
tl;drDandy Dungeon combines an RPG with a Puzzle game in a really unique and original way that has you stepping on every tile of each dungeon floor and fighting enemies in your path in the game-within-a-game, all while Yamada prances around in his underwear, sings the game’s music, and constantly adds stuff into the game based on the zany events of his life. It’s wacky, fun, wildly original, and instantly endearing, only being marred by repetitive gameplay and grinding. Definitely worth a look.
Darksiders II: Deathinitive EditionSpectacle Fighter / Action-RPGA-
tl;drDarksiders II: Deathinitive Edition is a game that mixes Spectacle Fighter and Action-RPG elements, and it does so much better than the first game, with improvements in pretty much every area of the game, save for the quality of the port from other platforms. While decent, it’s not quite up to the high bar set by the port of the first game. Still, it’s not a bad port, and any disappointment there is outweighed by just how much better virtually every other part of this game is than its predecessor. If you’re looking for a great game that mixes elements of Zelda-style Action-RPGs, Diablo-style loot collecting, and Devil May Cry-style combat, you should definitely give Darksiders II a look.
Deemo -Reborn-Music-Rhythm / Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drDeemo Reborn is a re-imagining of the original Deemo that takes the piano-focused Music-Rhythm gameplay of the original, improves the graphics, and adds new Graphic Adventure elements. The graphics are definitely an improvement here, and both the Music-Rhythm and Graphic Adventure gameplay is top-notch, but the two gameplay styles don’t work all that well together, and the much smaller track list compared to the original Deemo means that even though this is still a great game, it doesn’t quite measure up to its predecessor.
DeltaruneTurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drDeltarune is a Turn-Based RPG (sorta’) that follows in the footsteps of Undertale but does a few things quite differently, yet is in many ways much the same wildly creative, bizarre, funny, thoughtful and original experience that Undertale was. If you enjoyed Undertale, this is a no-brainer, if you didn’t like it then this probably won’t be any different for you, and if you haven’t played Undertale, then play Undertale before playing this.
Devil May Cry 3 Special EditionSpectacle FighterA-
tl;drDevil May Cry 3 is a Spectacle Fighter that’s a prequel to the first two games, focusing on Dante’s rivalry with his brother Virgil. This game is a return to form for the series that’s still a joy to play to this day, even if the graphics are dated (despite the remastered HD upgrade) and the camera could use a bit of work still. And while the game is still somewhat overpriced, at least this time Nintendo Switch owners are getting something in exchange for that expense – new control options to swap combat styles mid-combo make the Nintendo Switch version the definitive edition of the game. If you’re a fan of this genre, Devil May Cry 3 on the Nintendo Switch may be a must-buy, despite its price point and even if you already own it on another platform. And for those who never played it in the first place, this is a no-brainer.
Dicey DungeonsRoguelike / Board GameA-
tl;drDicey Dungeons is a family-friendly Roguelike with Board Game elements that plays like a cross between Slay the Spire and Yahtzee. While perhaps not as deep as the former, Dicey Dungeons makes up for it by being highly accessible and easy to play, while still having a fair amount of depth. If you enjoy both genres this game is derived from, you’ll definitely want to give it a look.
Disco Elysium – The Final CutGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drDisco Elysium is a phenomenal Graphic Adventure with RPG elements that puts players in the role of an amnesiac cop on a bender after an apparent mental breakdown who’s trying to solve his case while he pieces together the shambles of his former life. This is an outstanding, must-play entry in the genre, but the Nintendo Switch version is somewhat compromised due to frustrating controls and long loading times, among other smaller issues. This is still a game I absolutely recommend you to play, and the Nintendo Switch version of the game is still a playable port… but if at all possible I would nevertheless strongly urge you to play the PC version instead.
Disgaea 5 CompleteTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drDisgaea 5 Complete is a Strategy-RPG in the same style of Final Fantasy Tactics that includes all of the previous content released for the game. This is, in my opinion, the best game in the series, with a wealth of “quality of life” improvements that smooth out the gameplay, and tons of fun and interesting gameplay systems to play with to build up your characters. It’s not perfect – I hate this game’s story and characters and find its music mostly pretty bad, and it’s also not a game for everyone due to its focus on stats and grinding. However, if you’re the sort who enjoys gradually building up your Strategy-RPG characters to be powerhouses, this game is arguably the epitome of the genre.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive EditionTop-Down Turn-Based RPGA-
tl;drDivinity: Original Sin 2 is a Turn-Based RPG that had to sacrifice couch co-op and a lot of graphical fidelity to fit onto the Switch, but the game retains its massive, deep, well-told campaign, excellent strategic gameplay, absolutely beautiful soundtrack and superb voice acting and writing, and superb co-op play in local wireless and online. Plus, the Switch version has exclusive cross-save support with the PC version on Steam. The result is a version of the game that is one of the best RPGs on the Switch, and a must-have for fans of the genre who don’t already own it on another platform.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!Visual Novel / HorrorA-
tl;drDoki Doki Literature Club is an extremely original Visual Novel Dating Sim-style game about a boy who joins a school’s literature club and takes an interest in the club’s cute girls. There is deceptively good writing here, as well as other elements that I can’t discuss here without giving major spoilers. However, suffice it to say that there is some extreme stuff in the game that may not make it suitable for everyone. But those who enjoy the genre and don’t mind challenging topic matter will find this to be a truly inspired take on the genre.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive EditionTurn-Based JRPGA-
tl;drDragon Quest XI S is a graphical wonder on the Nintendo Switch, with calculated cuts to the graphics in the port from the PS4 have done little to reduce its jaw-dropping visual presentation, and the additions to the content are an embarrassment of riches. Unfortunately, the JRPG gameplay remains firmly-rooted in the past, and really feels long in the tooth. This game is still a must-play for JRPG fans, but don’t expect gameplay on par with the graphics.
Drawful 2Party GameA-
tl;drDrawful 2 is a Party Game that players play using their Smartphone instead of a controller. This game challenges players to use their touchscreens to sketch out various prompts and then vote on what other players’ prompts are depicting. This game is a noteworthy improvement over the original, but it’s debatable whether the $10 for this one game is a better value than the $25 for The Jackbox Party Pack containing the first Drawful. Regardless, this is an excellent Party Game, and fans of the genre should certainly get at least one of the games in this series.
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the KnightsMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drEnder Lilies is a Metroidvania that has clearly been strongly-inspired by the Dark Souls franchise, and the resulting mix of elements is fantastic, with the “Souls” side of things helping to make up for a few elements that are a bit lacking on the Metroidvania side of things. The comparisons to Blasphemous are inevitable, but this game mixes its two inspirations differently, with some of its stronger points being its absolutely gorgeous presentation, its strong worldbuilding, its excellent combat and its fantastic boss fights. In any case, if you’re a fan of any of the games that inspired Ender Lilies, consider this game a must-have.
Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the MistMetroidvaniaA-
tl;dr Ender Magnolia is a Metroidvania and follow up to Ender Lilies that features similar gameplay and presentation, but is set in a different world, with far more characters and dialogue. There are elements of the progression that could do with some improvement, but overall this is an outstanding entry in the genre, and one that Metroidvania fans should consider a must-play.
Explosionade DXAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drExplosionade is an Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter mechanics and some really delightful game mechanics like its shield/anti-gravity mechanic and adaptable grenades. It’s a bit short and lacking in content, but it’s more than worth its small $6 price tag, and fans of the genre should absolutely give this game a try.
Fae FarmAction-RPG / Management SimulationA-
tl;dr Fae Farm is a family-friendly “Farming RPG”-style Action-RPG and Management Sim that has players travelling to a magical island surrounded by whirlpools where they will find a pleasant community waiting for them… and of course a vacant farm too. Apart from the “magical” themes, this game doesn’t really do anything particularly new or transformative for the genre. Rather, it takes the standard gameplay of the genre and does that very well, with a wonderful polished presentation. It’s not anything truly groundbreaking, but it is still one of the best games I’ve played in this genre.
FaeriaCollectable Card Game / Turn-Based StrategyA-
tl;dr Faeria combines the Collectable Card Game and Turn-Based Strategy genres in a truly delightful way that makes for a wide variety of wonderful strategic possibilities. The pacing can be a tad slow and tiny text doesn’t work well in handheld mode, but overall this is a fantastic combination of the two genres with plenty of content to explore. Definitely worth a look for anyone who enjoys both genres.
Farm TogetherManagement SimA-
tl;drFarm Together is a Farm Management Sim that has a lot of the trappings of a microtransaction-filled game, but without the microtransactions. Instead, you’ll find it to have nice, relaxing gameplay that puts the focus on playing the game a little bit at a time and gradually watching your farm grow over time. If you’re cool with that sort of thing, this game could surprise you with how enjoyable it is.
Fibbage XLParty Game (Trivia)A-
tl;drFibbage XL is a Party Game where players are given an obscure question and prompted to create their own fake answer. Then players try to guess the correct answer from within all of the fake ones. It’s a hilarious spin on the trivia game that means that even if you’re not a trivia master you can still score big by fooling others. This is an all-around fantastic game, and it touts an additional 50% more questions than the original Fibbage. Having said that, this game is already included in the first of the Jackbox Party Pack series on the Nintendo Switch, so players might want to weigh the value of this game against that package.
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD RemasterCompilation / Turn-Based JRPGA-
tl;drFinal Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is a compilation of every game in the Final Fantasy X saga, with improved graphics and an optional remastered soundtrack. Final Fantasy X alone is an absolute must-play game that makes this compilation worthwhile, although none of the other content here quite measures up to it. If you’re a fan of JRPGs, however, this collection is worth it for that one game alone, and the other content here ain’t too shabby either.
Fire Emblem EngageTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drFire Emblem Engage is a Turn-Based Strategy-RPG that loses a lot of the character interaction and party-building elements featured in the prior game, Three Houses. However, in its place we have the return of some important strategic elements in combat, as well as a new Engage mechanic that provides even more customization and expanded combat options, as well as the extremely fan-servicey use of classic characters from throughout the Fire Emblem series. This still feels like a far less significant game than Three Houses was, but it is nevertheless a solid experience well worth playing for any fan of the genre.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three HopesAction BrawlerA-
tl;drFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes evolves the first Fire Emblem Warriors’ combination of Musou-style Action Brawler gameplay and strategic elements, pairing it with an excellent alternate story using the world and characters from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The Musou-style gameplay is still somewhat shallow, and the game still has some technical issues, overall this is a fun action-packed experience that both Musou fans and Fire Emblem fans will want to get.
FlinthookAction-Platformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drFlinthook is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you fighting through room after room of space pirates with a blaster gun and a grappling hook. The game looks and sounds great, and the grappling hook makes for some really fun gameplay that makes just moving around a joy. It’s a tough game, and the Roguelike elements do have a few issues, but overall this is an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
FliponMatch-3 PuzzleA-
tl;drFlipon is a Match-3 Puzzle game that directly copies the formula of Panel De Pon, and does so extraordinarily well, not only retaining the quality combo-heavy game mechanics of the original, but adding new features like special abilities and 4-player competitive play. It’s only real flaws are a lackluster presentation and a lack of online play. Still, for $6 this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that’s well worth adding to your collection.
Fly Together!ArcadeA-
tl;drFly Together! Is a family-friendly Arcade-style game like Flight Control, where players control the flight paths of planes as they guide them to airports to deliver passengers. It’s not a new concept, but it’s done exceptionally well here, with particularly great co-op and competitive multiplayer play. The single-player content feels like it could have been fleshed out more, but overall this is an excellent game to add to your rotation of fun multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch.
Forgotton AnnePuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drForgotton Anne is a puzzle-platformer with a wonderful, unique story and a fantastic presentation that seems like it’s right out of a Studio Ghibli film. The puzzle design isn’t especially challenging, but you’ll want to play through the game to experience more of its story.
FortniteCompilation / Open-World Third-Person ShooterA-
tl;dr Fortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, and the Nintendo Switch version has some ugly performance issues that make it one of the worst ways to play the game, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive EditionCompilation / Open-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition may have released in a disastrous state, but thanks to post-launch patches it has since become a decent remaster of a trio of phenomenal games, to the point where I would say the worst issue with this bundle is how dated these games are next to more modern Open-World Action-RPGs like Grand Theft Auto V. Those complaints aside, I would definitely say that this Compilation of legendary games is well worth getting on Nintendo Switch.
GrindstoneUnlimited Pattern PuzzleA-
tl;drGrindstone is a Puzzle game that has players guiding a warrior through hordes of color-coded monsters. It’s a compelling, visceral Puzzle game that’s a delight to play, with only a few very minor complaints I can point to. Fans of the genre should definitely give this game a try.
Gris + Neva BundleCompilation / PlatformerA-
tl;dr Gris + Neva Bundle is a Compilation of the two named games, a Platformer and Action-Platformer that are both incredible must-have audiovisual experiences. This bundle is a decent deal if you’re not going to wait for a sale, too… but if you can wait, then just get the games separately, as their sale prices are better than this package’s sale price.
Guacamelee 2MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drGuacamelee 2 is a Metroidvania with a superb fighting engine, and it retains many of the qualities that made the first game great. However, it’s a little less focused and a little rougher than the first game. It’s still one of the best Metroidvanias on the Switch, but not quite as good as its predecessor.
Guardian TalesTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drGuardian Tales is a free-to-play Zelda-style Top-Down Action-RPG with fun gameplay, lots of variety, an appealing presentation, and great writing with a superb sense of humor. The only thing that detracts from this otherwise outstanding game is the overbearing presence of the countless ways this game wants to catch you up in its microtransactions. However, if you can stomach all the gacha mechanics, it’s well worth a look – everything else about this game is outstanding.
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iXAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drGunvolt Chronicles focuses on the Gunvolt series’ supporting character Copen, in an Action-Platformer that plays very much like the Azure Striker Gunvolt games but without the restricted limitations that those games had as they were originally designed for the 3DS and this was not. The result is what I would argue is a far superior game, and although it’s not nearly as memorable as the classic Mega Man games that inspired it, it’s still an excellent game in the same vein as those legends.
Hard WestTurn-Based Strategy-RPG / Interactive Story-Driven AdventureA-
tl;drHard West is an XCOM-style Strategy-RPG that mixes in Choose-Your-Own Adventure mechanics, set in a darker, more supernatural version of the Wild West. It’s not without a few rough edges, but on the whole this is a delightfully inventive take on the genre, well worth a look.
Hollow KnightMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drHollow Knight is a Metroidvania with an absolutely beautiful moody presentation, tons of secrets and things to find, and a punishing difficulty. It’s not without its flaws, but if you like the genre, it’s well worth your time.
Hollow Knight: SilksongMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drHollow Knight: Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to the original Hollow Knight, and it is a fine successor, with an absolutely beautiful presentation and a fascinating new world to explore. Unfortunately, it still has many of the problems the first game had, including a punishing difficulty level and frustrating design choices. Still, even with these issues, this is a game not to be missed for any fan in the genre who isn’t opposed to a challenge.
HoracePlatformerA-
tl;drHorace is a Platformer where players take the role of a robot trying to make sense of the world, help others, and clean up junk. This is a wonderful Platformer with a surprisingly moving and funny story and great characters. It can’t fully seem to decide if it wants to be a Metroidvania or a more straightforward Platformer, but either way this game is a phenomenal Platformer well worth playing.
Hotline Miami CollectionCompilation / Top-Down Action / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drHotline Miami Collection is a pair of solid Top-Down Action games with a colorful 80s-inspired presentation and intense action that makes players consider their plan of attack. It’s a solid experience, although the first Hotline Miami game is clearly the better of the two, thanks to the more cohesive story and better level design.
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive EditionAction BrawlerA-
tl;drHyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors-style Action Brawler with a Zelda setting and characters. It looks a bit dated and has a few issues here and there, but it’s an absolute blast to play in co-op… once you look up online how to actually play in co-op.
I Am SetsunaTurn-Based JRPGA-
tl;drI Am Setsuna is a JRPG that looks to recreate the magic of old-school titles in the genre, specifically Chrono Trigger, and it largely succeeds. The presentation is beautiful, the story and characters are charming, and the gameplay seems like a natural extension of Chrono Trigger’s. While it doesn’t quite reach that game’s heights, it is nevertheless a wonderful game that fans of the genre really should try out.
IkarugaBullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;drIkaruga is a Bullet Hell Shmup that’s at its best on the Switch, which not only plays smoothly while docked, but even has features to make the best use of the Switch in portable mode. If you like this genre, you need this game.
Immortals Fenyx RisingOpen-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drImmortals Fenyx Rising is an Open-World Action-RPG that is very clearly taking more than a few pages from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for its Greek myth-themed adventure. And while it never comes close to being a rival for Zelda, it is nevertheless a solid entry in the genre, and one that looks surprisingly good on the Nintendo Switch, despite the downgrade from other platforms. Players who fancy a new adventure into a large open world should definitely give this game a look.
InscryptionTurn-Based Card Game / Roguelike / First-Person Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drInscryption is a deck-building Card Game and Roguelike with a First-Person Graphic Adventure framing device with players finding themselves in a dark cabin with a mysterious, sinister dealer playing a card game about sacrificing animals. The card game itself is excellent, and the foreboding dark atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, that same darkness can make this game hard to see in handheld mode, and there are a few other minor frustrations here and there. However, in spite of these issues, Inscryption is a macabre delight, and it’s a game I highly recommend, especially to fans of similar games like Slay the Spire.
IroncastUnlimited Pattern Puzzle / Turn-Based RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;drIroncast is a combination of Puzzle, Turn-Based RPG, and Roguelike elements that puts players in the role of an upper-class mech operator in an alternate version of Victorian England at war with France. This is a game that requires players to be mindful of its various interconnected systems as they engage in battles, with some really excellent strategic elements that make the game extremely engaging. There is definitely room here for improvement, but overall this game is a blast to play, and well worth giving a try.
IslandersManagement Sim / PuzzleA-
tl;drIslanders is a family-friendly Management Sim-style game with Puzzle elements that has players placing buildings on procedurally-generated islands. This is a game that boils down the Management Sim genre to an elegant simplicity that makes for a truly compelling experience, and one that is absolutely worth the tiny $5 price tag, even if it could stand to have a little more depth.
Islanders: New ShoresManagement Simulation / PuzzleA-
tl;drIslanders: New Shores is a Management Simulation and Puzzle game that is a follow-up to the original Islanders, and it takes the gameplay of the original game and adds multiple new elements for deeper gameplay, as well as some welcome new options. It’s hard to say whether this deeper gameplay is superior to the more simple and straightforward original game, but overall this is still a great game and an excellent sequel well worth playing for anyone looking for a relaxing game in this combination of genres.
Jamestown+Bullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;drJamestown+ is a Bullet Hell Shmup that has players blasting 17th century colonial European troops and aliens in outer space. The bonkers setting comes with a fantastic presentation, some wonderful and clever game mechanics that add a lot of strategy, plenty of variety and imagination, and a superb co-op mode. It’s a shame the game’s structure makes you re-play levels repeatedly and forces its story on you over and over again, but overall this is one of the best games in this genre on the Switch.
Journey to the Savage PlanetFirst-Person Shooter / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drJourney to the Savage Planet is a First-Person Metroidvania much in the same vein as Metroid Prime, but with a fantastic sense of humor and a really beautiful and inventive world to explore, as well as surprisingly good local wireless and online co-op. This game is definitely flawed, with various elements that don’t work or things that are desperately needed but missing, but even with these flaws, this is an absolutely incredible game that’s a must-play for Metroidvania fans.
Jurassic World Evolution: Complete EditionManagement SimA-
tl;drJurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition is a Management Sim that has you creating and managing your own dinosaur park, controlling everything from the layout and concession prices to the DNA of the dinos themselves. This is a gorgeous and detailed game with a fantastic presentation and wonderfully immersive gameplay… in docked mode. In handheld mode, it’s another story, as the low resolutions mar the otherwise superb experience this game offers. However, beyond this and a few other minor flaws, this is exactly what I’m looking for in a Jurassic Park simulator on the Nintendo Switch.
Kamitsubaki City EnsembleMusic-RhythmA-
tl;dr Kamitsubaki City Ensemble is a Music-Rhythm game that has some rough spots here and there and a soundtrack of exclusively Vocaloid music that won’t be for everyone, but it features solid lane-based gameplay (with superb optional touchscreen controls) and a whopping 48 songs for only $4. If you enjoy Music-Rhythm games and don’t hate Vocaloid music, this is an absolute no-brainer at that price given the massive value present here.
Katamari Damacy RerollArcadeA-
tl;drKatamari Damacy Reroll takes the excellent and crazy-inventive PS2 game about rolling up objects into a giant ball, and brings it into the modern day with HD resolution, higher framerates, and not much else. Still, as the best version of a fantastic game, it’s well worth getting.
Keep Talking and Nobody ExplodesPuzzle / Party GameA-
tl;drKeep Talking and No One Explodes is a cooperative puzzle game where one player is defusing a bomb that others can’t see, and the others are relaying instructions from a manual that the bomb defuser can’t see. It’s a really inventive, fun, and unique game that’s sure to be a blast at parties.
Kirby Star AlliesPlatformerA-
tl;drKirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the Kirby series that largely stays true to the series’ roots, with the main difference being the new “ally” mechanic that has you making helper characters. It’s an audiovisual treat, and an absolute must-have game for those looking for a great kid-friendly co-op experience on the Switch. However, more skilled players looking for a challenge aren’t likely to find it here.
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land DeluxePlatformerA-
tl;drKirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a re-release of a family-friendly Platformer that was originally released on the Wii. Multiple elements have been remade or expanded on here, including redone visuals, expanded features, and a really enjoyable new “Magolor Epilogue”. This combines with the original game’s excellent gameplay and great multiplayer to make for a truly excellent game. Unfortunately, the added content here doesn’t quite seem to justify the $60 price tag for a game that’s over a decade old, but if you’re a Platformer fan who never played the original, consider this a must-have.
LacunaGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drLacuna is a Graphic Adventure that has players as a futuristic FBI agent investigating the assassination of a visiting offworld dignitary, with the plot growing progressively thicker. This game has superb worldbuilding, likable characters, excellent pacing, beautiful pixel art visuals, a great atmospheric soundtrack, and some great puzzles that do a good job making players truly play the part of a detective. The game is stingy about refusing to let players save as they please though, meaning any mistakes you make will be stuck with you as you progress. While this mechanic may not be for everyone, I still think that fans of Graphic Adventures should consider this a must-play game.
LEGO City UndercoverOpen-World 3D Action-PlatformerA-
tl;drLEGO City Undercover on Nintendo Switch is an excellent upgrade to what was previously a Wii U exclusive title, one of the best games in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO 3D Action-Platformers, and an excellent Open-World game. This police spoof is a joy to play, and while it definitely still has areas that need improvement, LEGO fans should consider this a must-play, and those looking for a good Open-World game on Nintendo Switch would do well to give this some consideration.
Let’s Build a ZooManagement SimulationA-
tl;drLet’s Build a Zoo is a Management Simulation about building up and running a zoo. The core gameplay here is solid, epitomizing the genre formula well. However, on top of this, you also have some clever game mechanics and a wonderful presentation. The result is one of the best entries this genre has seen on Nintendo Switch, although it’s certainly not without its flaws. However, if you like Management Simulations, this is definitely one you won’t want to miss.
Light FallPlatformerA-
tl;drLight Fall is a platformer with excellent physics and a really great “magic box” mechanic that makes it really fun to move around, and the game’s presentation is superb… that is, except for the throwaway story and the annoying narration. However, while this game isn’t without its problems, fans of platformers should still give it a try, as it’s still a blast to play.
Lil Gator GameOpen-World Action-RPG / 3D PlatformerA-
tl;drLil Gator Game is a family-friendly game that combines Open-World Action-Adventure and 3D Platformer elements, with gameplay that feels like a very kid-friendly take on the sort of gameplay we saw in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While nowhere near as deep or rewarding as that game, Lil Gator Game is absolutely full to bursting with adorable, endearing, charming personality as players take on the role of a young anthropomorphic alligator trying to rally their friends to join them in their make-believe game that casts them as the epic hero. While not without its flaws (particularly, repetitive scenery and no map), this is still a wonderful entry in the genre well worth playing.
Lil’ GuardsmanGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Lil’ Guardsman is a Graphic Adventure that puts players in the role of a 12 year-old girl made to take a role as a gate guard, deciding whether or not to allow in various silly and bizarre characters. This game’s excellent writing, wonderful characters, engrossing story, and great sense of humor are all fantastic, and the gameplay gives players decent puzzles to solve while frequently changing things up to add variety. There are a few issues here, but overall this is an absolute delight of a game that plays like Papers, Please with a much more jovial tone.
LimboPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drEven eight years after its first release, Limbo is still a master class in efficient game design, with excellent Puzzle-Platformer gameplay using simple, straightforward mechanics, and an impressive, memorable presentation that somehow fits within 123MB of memory. While the game’s gruesome imagery may scare off some, and its repeated and often necessary deaths do get frustrating, overall this is still a fantastic entry in the genre well worth owning on the Switch if you don’t already have it on another platform.
Little Noah: Scion of ParadiseAction-Platformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drLittle Noah is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements (on the “Roguelite” side of the spectrum) where players fight through dungeons as a young woman whose attacks consist of “Lilliput” creatures collected along the way and assigned by the player into their own custom attack combos. This makes for an extremely varied and enjoyable combat system, in an overall polished, appealing, fun and original take on the genre. If you like Roguelikes, this is absolutely a game you should try.
Lost in PlayGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Lost in Play is an absolutely charming family-friendly Graphic Adventure where players take the role of two children playing both in the real world and in their make-believe imaginary world. The presentation is adorable, the characters are wonderfully lovable, the puzzles are clever, and the gameplay is highly accessible. There are maybe a few small complaints here and there, but overall this is an outstanding entry in the genre that’s sure to bring a smile to your face.
Lumines RemasteredPuzzleA-
tl;drLumines is a Tetris-style Puzzle game where players drop blocks and match colors in the shape of squares and rectangles, all to the tempo of the game’s wide variety of music and visuals. The gameplay is solid, the fantastic presentation looks even better in HD, and in short for fans of this genre, this should be considered an absolute must-have.
Mega Man 11Action-PlatformerA-
tl;drMega Man 11 is an Action-Platformer that eschews the nostalgia-driven presentation and gameplay of the ninth and tenth installments and actually makes a top-notch effort to push the series forward for the first time in ages. The result is a breath of fresh air for the series, and a game that absolutely demands to be played by fans of the genre, even those who gave up on the Mega Man series long ago – for the first time in ages, Mega Man feels fresh and new again, and it’s wonderful.
Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy CollectionCompilation / Action-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection is a collection of six games in Mega Man spinoff series on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Some of the biggest complaints about these games (namely, the punishing difficulty) have been addressed with new features, making the otherwise excellent games much more approachable, and the result is a series that is sometimes truly great but always at least pretty good. Plus, the amount of extra content here is fantastic, especially for the low price of $30. If you’re a fan of Action-Platformers, especially if you enjoy Mega Man games, you need to own this collection.
MelatoninMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drMelatonin is a family-friendly Music-Rhythm game that takes the basic gameplay idea of Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven series and adapts it to this game’s dream-inspired levels with a wonderful pastel presentation and bizarre dream logic. Not only does this game feature great gameplay comparable to its inspiration, it actually builds on it with clever ways to shake up that gameplay. I do have a few minor complaints, but overall I think this is a must-have game for Music-Rhythm fans.
Metroid DreadMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMetroid Dread is an excellent fifth entry in this series of 2D Metroidvania games, with stunning visuals, well-crafted gameplay, and excellent bosses. However, some of the level design and stealth elements here keep it from reaching the same highs as Super Metroid. Still, if you’re a fan of Metroidvanias, this game is a must-have for you. And if you’re a Metroid fan, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Metroid Prime 4: BeyondOpen-World First-Person Shooter / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;dr Metroid Prime 4 is a First-Person Shooter and Metroidvania with Open-World sections, and it is an audiovisual tour de force on Nintendo Switch, with a gorgeous world, incredible puzzle design, and some clever gameplay elements. It also disappoints with its underwhelming Metroidvania elements, its half-baked Open World elements, and some truly baffling design choices. The result is a game that, while still outstanding, is a bit underwhelming given the 18 years it took for us to finally see this game release.
Mighty Gunvolt BurstAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drMighty Gunvolt Burst is an Action-Platformer that’s nominally a retro-styled combination of Mighty No. 9 and the Azure Striker Gunvolt series, but save for its characters it’s actually a refreshingly unique take on the classic Mega Man formula with an inspired weapon-creation system that makes this, in my opinion, the pinnacle of both game series. The game is a bit on the short side, but it also has a budget price, and given how much fun this small package is, I urge fans of the genre to give it a try.
Mini MetroPuzzle / SimulationA-
tl;drMini Metro is a superb puzzle/sim game that has you drawing the map for a subway/lightrail as more stops and more passengers demand to be delivered swiftly to their destination. Add in a clean, simple graphical interface perfectly suited for the game, and a soothing soundtrack, and you have a real winner here. The only thing that’s keeping this from puzzle perfection is a lack of options and stiff controls.
MLB The Show 22Sports (Baseball)A-
tl;drMLB The Show 22 is a top-notch simulation-style Baseball game, and while it may not have the same graphical prowess on Nintendo’s handheld as it does on other consoles, it still looks and plays great, with a lot of gameplay customization options. It could stand to be a bit more accessible, and it’s absurd how much memory card space you still need to devote to the game even if you have the physical version, but despite these flaws, this is still one of the best Baseball games on Nintendo Switch.
MLB The Show 23Sports (Baseball)A-
tl;drMLB The Show 23 builds on what was already great in MLB The Show 22, making for yet another excellent Simulation-style Baseball game that’s both deep and highly accessible. The new Negro League mode is a great look back into an important cornerstone of the sport’s history, and while it doesn’t quite live up to its full potential, it’s still an excellent addition to the game. I should note that once again, the Nintendo Switch version of the game is a severe visual downgrade from other versions, but if you’re looking for a Baseball game on Nintendo’s handheld, this is definitely one of your best options.
MLB The Show 24Sports (Baseball)A-
tl;drMLB The Show 24 doesn’t seem to change too much from last year’s entry in the series, but it is nevertheless still a truly superb baseball game that is both deep and also highly accessible. All of the graphical and performance issues of prior years’ versions on Nintendo Switch are still present here, and the game’s massive file size is a major consideration in both digital and physical versions of the game, but those whose only gaming platform is Nintendo Switch will still find this a fantastic baseball game.
Momodora: Moonlit FarewellMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMomodora: Moonlit Farewell is a Metroidvania that greatly improves on the previous game, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, resulting in a game with a gorgeous presentation, challenging but satisfying combat, and pretty good level design and progression. And while I do think there’s room for improvement, this is still an outstanding Metroidvania that every fan of the genre should play.
Monaco Complete EditionTop-Down StealthA-
tl;drMonaco is a Top-Down Stealth game that has you as one of various archetypal members of a crew of criminals breaking into and out of places, robbing them, and trying not to get caught while doing so. It’s a difficult game, but it’s delightful in single-player, and an absolute blast in co-op. Online play requires jumping through the Switch’s usual frustrating hoops, but local and local wireless play is excellent, and on the whole this is still a must-have game for co-op fans on the Switch.
Monster SanctuaryTurn-Based Monster Collecting RPG / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMonster Sanctuary takes Turn-Based Monster-Collecting RPG gameplay and places it in a side-scrolling Metroidvania. I wish the game went farther to incorporate its Metroidvania elements into the game, but overall it’s hard to complain when this is a top-notch Monster Collecting RPG, and one with a lot of depth to its gameplay. Fans of the genre will find it well worth playing.
Mutant Mudds CollectionCompilation / Platformer / Falling Block PuzzleA-
tl;drMutant Mudds Collection is a compilation of the two Mutant Mudds Platformer games and a new Puzzle game, with all three being good entries in their respective genres, and the collection overall being a fantastic value.
My Friend PedroAction-Platformer/2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drMy Friend Pedro is an Action-Platformer with Two-Stick Shooter controls that has players involved in acrobatic gunfights at the command of a talking banana. This game’s intense, ridiculous action is a blast to play, and while there’s a bit of repetition here and there, for the most part this game does an amazing job keeping things fresh and entertaining. A must-have for action game fans.
Neon AbyssAction-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeA-
tl;drNeon Abyss is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that feels a lot like the designers were going for a side-scrolling neon-lit Binding of Isaac, and they largely hit their mark spot-on. Only a few technical flaws keep this game from reaching the same height as that classic Roguelike, but it’s still a phenomenal Action game.
Neon WhiteFirst-Person Shooter / PlatformerA-
tl;drNeon White is a First-Person Shooter with strong Platformer elements that has players speeding through obstacle course-style levels in heaven trying to gun down demons and get to the exit as quickly as possible using cards that act like weapons. The story and premise may seem odd, but the presentation is memorable, the gameplay is fluid, fast-paced and exhilarating, and the level design is impeccable. If you’re a fan of fast-paced action and First-Person Shooters, you should definitely give this game a try.
NeuroVoider2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeA-
tl;drNeuroVoider is a combination of Two-Stick Shooter and Roguelike that has you fighting an army of robots, stealing their parts, and then using them to upgrade your own capabilities. It’s an incredibly fun game with great co-op, a fantastic presentation, and tons of variety and customization. The randomized level design and enemy AI could have used a bit of work, but on the whole this is an absolutely fantastic game that should be owned by anyone who enjoys a good Action game.
Nine SolsMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drNine Sols is a Metroidvania about a warrior reborn after being left for dead and fighting back against those responsible. The exploration elements of this game aren’t quite as good as the best Metroidvanias, but the immensely satisfying and highly-challenging combat more than makes up for this. This isn’t a game for the light of heart, but those who enjoy working towards mastery will find this to be an extremely rewarding game that is not to be missed.
No Man’s SkyOpen-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drNo Man’s Sky is a universe-sized Open-World Action-RPG that more or less delivers the ambitious game to Nintendo Switch intact… well, save for the terribly mangled graphics and performance in this version and the dropped multiplayer and settlements. Make no mistake, this is absolutely the worst version of No Man’s Sky, but even with all of the added flaws, this is still an incredibly satisfying and impressive game. You should absolutely play this game… but if possible, you may want to play it on another platform.
No More Heroes 2: Desperate StruggleSpectacle FighterA-
tl;drNo More Heroes 2 improves on the first game in nearly every way, delivering the same great action and outlandish presentation, but with better graphics, better controls, streamlined game design, better minigames… really, the only thing I can find fault with here is the game’s camera is still a pain and the visuals are a bit dated. However, aside from that, this game is an all-around fantastic Spectacle Fighter that should be played by anyone who enjoys the genre… at least as long as they don’t mind a lot of misogyny and an immature sense of humor.
Nowhere ProphetTurn-Based Card RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;drNowhere Prophet is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike that has players in the role of a leader of a convoy in a Mad Max-esque post-apocalypse. This game has progression somewhat like Slay the Spire and combat closer to Hearthstone, with some clever risk and reward mechanics and resource management elements. While this game isn’t quite as easy to get into as Slay the Spire, it is nevertheless an outstanding entry in the genre with a killer soundtrack, and fans of the genre should consider it a must-buy.
Octahedron: Transfixed EditionPlatformerA-
tl;drOctahedron is a Platformer with some unique mechanics that have you creating your own platforms and surfing on them in a neon-infused presentation with a rocking chiptune soundtrack. This game is a delight that fans of Platformers should absolutely play.
One Finger Death Punch 2ArcadeA-
tl;drOne Finger Death Punch 2 is an Arcade-style game that has you using only two buttons to have your stick figure fend off an army of attackers, and despite the simple gameplay and visuals, the game is an absolute blast to play. It’s a shame the multiplayer is such a dud, but there’s plenty enough single-player content here to keep you playing for a good long while, and I highly recommend you do.
Overwatch Legendary EditionFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drOverwatch is an online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter with a heavy emphasis on its wide cast of memorable and unique characters with different abilities. This is a good port of a fantastic game, but it sacrifices a lot to make the game work on the Switch. If you can play this game on another platform, that is clearly going to be the better option. Otherwise, the Switch version is excellent, and one of the best First-Person Shooters on the platform.
PaladinsFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drPaladins is a Free-to-Play online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter with a heavy emphasis on its wide cast of memorable and unique characters with different abilities, comparable to Overwatch. This is an excellent port of a fantastic game, and while I still slightly prefer Overwatch, Paladins has a lot going in its favor, such as its silky-smooth 60FPS framerates and its customizable loadouts. If you’re looking for a great online First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, you should definitely give this game a try.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year DoorTurn-Based JRPGA-
tl;dr Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a full remake of the classic family-friendly GameCube Turn-Based JRPG, one that series fans swear is still the best in the series, and they have a point – despite a slow start, this game is excellent, with some compelling but straightforward gameplay mechanics, likable characters, and a great story. What’s more, this release features a gorgeous graphical upgrade, a remade soundtrack, and some excellent minor quality-of-life gameplay additions. Overall, that makes this a must-play for RPG fans, and especially for fans of Mario RPGs.
Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of HonjoVisual Novel / Graphic Adventure / HorrorA-
tl;drParanormasight is a Visual Novel with Graphic Adventure and Horror elements following multiple characters who possess “curse stones”, and are enticed to hunt down and use their curses to kill each other to resurrect a friend or loved one. This game has a wonderful Rashomon-style plot, excellent fourth wall-breaking puzzles, and a beautiful art style, all for only $20. It has a few issues, and a somewhat silly premise, but overall this is an outstanding Visual Novel and Graphic Adventure, and in particular fans of those genres who enjoy dark stories of the occult should absolutely consider this a must-have.
PentimentGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Pentiment is a Graphic Adventure that follows a 16th century artist trying to solve a murder mystery. The characters and story are great, the dedication to creating an accurate depiction of the time period is phenomenal, the presentation and especially the sound design are incredible, and the game mechanics truly give you the sense that your character choices are giving you the freedom to investigate the crime in your own unique way. The game’s more relaxed pacing may not appeal to everyone, but overall this is a must-have for any fans of the Graphic Adventure genre.
Persona 4 GoldenTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;dr Persona 4 Golden on Nintendo Switch is a remaster of the PlayStation Vita remake of the original PlayStation 2 release of Persona 4, and this is still one of the best games in this series and the genre as a whole, even if it has aged somewhat. It’s not as flashy as Persona 5, but Persona 4 features a wonderful story with great characters, excellent gameplay, and this is overall a great port of the definitive version of the game. If you’re a JRPG fan with a Nintendo Switch, this game is a must!
Persona 5 StrikersAction-RPGA-
tl;drPersona 5 Strikers is an Action-RPG that acts as a sequel of sorts to Persona 5, albeit with new action-focused gameplay that combines elements of RPGs, musou-style Action-Brawlers, Platformers, and even some Stealth elements, all while retaining Persona 5’s fantastic, stylistic presentation. This game juggles a lot of different elements, and manages to balance most of them quite well, making for a truly unique experience, albeit an experience that’s likely to be best appreciated by those who played Persona 5. If you haven’t, this game is still good enough to consider trying.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney TrilogyCompilation / Visual Novel / Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drPhoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is a collection of the first three games in this series of investigation and legal drama games that lies somewhere between a Graphic Adventure and Visual Novel. This is a fantastic collection of three superb games with memorable characters and wonderful gameplay, but $30 for three games that are nearly 20 years old seems a bit much, even if you’re not likely to find a better deal on these games elsewhere.
Pinball FX3Compilation / PinballA-
tl;drPinball FX3 is a free-to-play Compilation that includes two free Pinball tables, Sorcerer’s Lair and Fish Tales, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. This is a well-crafted collection of Pinball games, and I think it’s the best of the free-to-play offerings. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free. And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as there are on other platforms (no Marvel content? What gives!?).
Pipistrello and the Cursed YoyoTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;dr Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a Top-Down Action-RPG that follows the traditional 2D Zelda formula but with a yo-yo as its central mechanic, with some really creative uses for it that you gain as you progress. This game isn’t without its flaws, but overall this is a fun and unique take on the Action-RPG genre well worth playing.
Pokemon Legends ArceusTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;drPokemon Legends Arceus is a game that takes the Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG gameplay of Nintendo’s long-running Pokemon series and brings it into large, open areas (though not quite Open-World). The change in world design and gameplay here is significant, making this game not only highly enjoyable, but also truly unique in the series. However, this game is also deeply flawed and feels outright rushed – it is lacking a ton of gameplay features, there are multiple poorly-conceived gameplay elements, and the graphics have some major issues. It still manages to be a delight to play despite these issues, but these flaws keep this game from being the absolute triumph it could have been if it got more polish.
Pokemon ScarletOpen-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;drPokemon Scarlet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Violet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. Unfortunately, all of these great qualities are marred by some nasty graphical and performance issues, as well as some gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, but it’s a great game that is damaged severely by its significant flaws.
Pokemon VioletOpen-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;drPokemon Violet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Scarlet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. Unfortunately, all of these great qualities are marred by some nasty graphical and performance issues, as well as some gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, but it’s a great game that is damaged severely by its significant flaws.
PromenadePlatformer / Puzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;dr Promenade is a Platformer with Puzzle-Platformer elements that takes the goal-oriented level design of some 3D Platformers and brings it into a 2D game with plenty of creativity and a solid presentation. This game is absolutely one that Platformer fans should play.
Pure PoolSports (Pool)A-
tl;drPure Pool is quite possibly the best game of Pool I have ever played that didn’t involve picking up a real cue. This game looks absolutely gorgeous, sounds great, plays great, has plenty of content. There are a few areas where I could nitpick – it doesn’t have motion controls, could have used more tutorial content, and players should have been given more control over the camera. But even with these minor issues, this is still an absolutely phenomenal game of Pool at a fantastic price.
Quilts and Cats of CalicoBoard GameA-
tl;dr Quilts and Cats of Calico is a family-friendly videogame adaptation of the Board Game Calico, and it takes a game with wonderful “easy to learn, tough to master” gameplay and translates it exceptionally well to videogame form, with a good selection of game modes and an outstanding presentation with a lovely soundtrack. If you enjoy Board Games or Puzzles and particularly like “cozy games”, consider this a must-have.
Radiant SilvergunBullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;dr Radiant Silvergun is a Bullet Hell Shmup that remains one of the greatest games in the genre thanks to its wide selection of weapons, its excellent level design, and its phenomenal boss design. The high challenge level and technical nature of the gameplay may make this less-appealing to newcomers to the genre, but every serious Shmup fan should consider this game an absolute must-have.
Raging LoopVisual Novel / HorrorA-
tl;drRaging Loop is a Visual Novel with Horror elements about a poor rural Japanese village thrust into a ritual where a few of the villagers secretly transform into werewolves aiming to slaughter everyone else. This game has some pacing issues, presentation issues, and occasionally spotty localization, but it nevertheless thrives due to an amazing story with wonderful world-building and great characters. Visual Novel and Horror fans alike should definitely give this a look.
Red Faction: Guerilla Re-Mars-tered EditionOpen-World Third-Person ShooterA-
tl;drRed Faction: Guerilla Re-Marstered Edition is the HD re-release of the decade-old Open-World Third-Person Shooter that has aged remarkably well and is still unparalleled in its fun and impressive-looking destruction. While not quite as good-looking as other versions of the game, it still looks and plays great, and while the game isn’t without its flaws, the basic gameplay is so compelling that it’s still a joy to play after all these years.
Remnants of NaezithPlatformerA-
tl;drRemnants of Naezith is a challenging Platformer where players must use a grappling hook and the game’s fun physics system to swing their way to the end of every level. The gameplay here is great, fast-paced, and gives players a lot they can do despite having a limited move set. If you’re down for a tough but fair Platformer, this is a great choice.
Return of the Obra DinnFirst-Person Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drReturn of the Obra Dinn is a Graphic Adventure that has players using a magical pocket watch to investigate the deaths on a doomed ship at sea to try and match each of the bodies with their proper identities, cause of death, and killer. The presentation here is phenomenal and unique, the gameplay is absolutely inspired and cleverly balanced, and the story being told is truly thrilling. There are a few inconveniences that make the end drag on a bit, but overall this is an outstanding title that’s one of the finest games I have played in this genre, and a must-have for anyone looking for a truly great detective game.
Ring Fit AdventureSports (Exercise) / Action-RPGA-
tl;drRing Fit Adventure is an Exercise game with light Action-RPG elements that has you plugging a pair of Joy-Cons into the included Ring-Con and leg strap accessories to use the motion-sensing abilities of the controllers to workout in various ways to assist on your adventure. The motion control here works surprisingly well, and the presentation is very good (annoying character voices aside), plus there’s a good selection of minigames here that are extremely creative and fun. I feel the game’s designers could have gone even farther to add game elements into the exercise bits, but overall this is a one of the best exercise games ever made, and well worth getting if you can find it at a reasonable price.
Riptide GP RenegadeFuturistic RacingA-
tl;drRiptide GP: Renegade is a futuristic racing game that’s like someone took F-Zero, Wave Race, SSX, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and threw them into a blender. The result is an intense high-speed racing game that, while light on the number of tracks it offers, is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, well worth getting.
Rogue Legacy 2Action-Platformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drRogue Legacy 2 is an Action-Platformer and Roguelike about a family line trying to explore the depths of a dangerous shape-shifting castle. This game improves on the first game in virtually every way, while keeping what was great about the original game intact. There’s so much variety here, so many ways to upgrade your characters, and countless new elements that make different character types even more distinct and add Metroidvania elements to the gameplay. An absolute must for anyone who enjoyed the first game, and well worth a try for anyone who enjoys Action-Platformers and Roguelikes.
Rune Factory 4 SpecialTop-Down Action-RPG / Management SimA-
tl;drRune Factory 4 Special is an upgraded port of the 3DS “Farming RPG” that adds a greater focus on dungeon crawling, combat, and a more traditional JRPG-style story. However, what really sets it apart from other games in the genre is its charming characters and writing, as well as its very user-friendly gameplay. Fans of Stardew Valley and Japanese-style Action-RPGs in general would do well to give this game a look.
Saints Row IV: Re-ElectedOpen-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drSaint’s Row IV is a super-violent off-the-wall Open-World Action-RPG that starts out like Grand Theft Auto, but soon adds superpowers, becoming something more like Crackdown. It’s a solid port of a joyously good game, but the price difference here is outrageous, and while I think this is a game that should definitely be played, Switch owners who also have another modern gaming platform will save a lot of money getting it elsewhere.
Saints Row: The Big Purple PackageCompilation / Open-World Action-RPGA-
tl;dr Saints Row: The Big Purple Package is a Compilation of two Open-World Action-RPG games – Saints Row: The Third: The Full Package, Saints Row IV: Re-Elected. Both games are outstanding and highly-creative, even if the Nintendo Switch ports had to make unfortunate graphical cutbacks, and this package is a solid deal on the pair of them. If you missed out on these games and want some great Open-World Action on Nintendo Switch, do not miss this bundle.
SanabiAction-PlatformerA-
tl;dr Sanabi is an Action-Platformer where players take the role of a revenge-fueled man using his bionic arm’s grappling hook to swing acrobatically through a desolate cyberpunk-style city and gracefully and efficiently eliminate its robotic threats. What’s more, this game has an outstanding story filled with character and atmosphere, and while the story and gameplay can butt heads at time, it hardly matters as both the gameplay and the story had me glued to my screen. This is a truly must-play game for any Action fan on Nintendo Switch.
Sayonara Wild HeartsArcadeA-
tl;drScott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is quite simply one of the greatest Arcade Brawlers ever made, and its long-awaited release on Nintendo Switch does not disappoint. While this game still bears some of the flaws of the genre (short length, repetitive combat), it is nevertheless an outstanding experience with tons of depth and a great retro-style presentation that is a must-have for any fan of the genre.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game – Complete EditionArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drScott Pilgrim Vs.
Sea of StarsTurn-Based JRPGA-
tl;drSea of Stars is a Turn-Based JRPG inspired by classics of the genre like Chrono Trigger, featuring a beautiful soundtrack, gorgeous pixel art graphics, and endearing and wonderful characters. It’s not without its problems – the overall plot is nothing special, the combat is clever but also frequently tedious, and the progression is slow as molasses. However, while it’s not quite on par with the greats of the genre it’s designed to imitate, Sea of Stars is nevertheless an excellent JRPG that fans of the genre should consider a must-play game.
Sega Ages Sonic the HedgehogPlatformerA-
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog remains a classic platformer, and this release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection.
Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2PlatformerA-
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog 2 is a classic Platformer originally released on the Sega Genesis, and it has aged pretty well. This release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. This is one of the highlights of the series, and well worth grabbing for any fan of Platformers.
SeveredFirst-Person Action-RPGA-
tl;drSevered is a handheld-only First-Person Action-RPG about a girl with a severed arm fighting monsters in a nightmare realm to find her missing family. This game has a stylized, unique look and a wildly inventive combat system, and while the dungeon crawling elements here aren’t quite as inspired, the touchscreen combat is so well-crafted and fun that this should be a must-buy for players who play their Nintendo Switch primarily in handheld mode and don’t already have the game on another platform.
Shantae and the Pirate’s CurseMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drShantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a Metroidvania with some of the best-animated pixel art you’re likely to find in a videogame, and the gameplay is top-notch as well, even if it’s not doing anything especially new or novel. If you’re a fan of the genre, consider this game a must-have.
Shantae: Half-Genie HeroAction-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drShantae: Half-Genie Hero is an Action-Platformer with Metroidvania elements that takes the series’ already-amazing presentation to new levels with gorgeous, exquisitely-animated hand-drawn visuals. And while some players may not be thrilled with this game dialing back the series’ Metroidvania elements, the gameplay here is still plenty of fun and well worth playing for fans of 2D Platforming action.
Shin Megami Tensei VTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;drShin Megami Tensei V is a Turn-Based Monster-Collecting JRPG where players build up a team of demonic creatures to fight their way through a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. No prior experience with the series is needed, but do know that this is a very tough game with a somewhat off-putting presentation, and as such it isn’t going to be for everyone. However, the amount of freedom players are given here to explore and build their own team of monsters is absolutely wonderful, with some deep combat mechanics as well. And series fans will be delighted at how this game streamlines elements of prior games while adding additional depth. While this is a somewhat niche game, it fills that niche extraordinarily well, and if you like complexity and challenge in your RPGs, you should absolutely get this game.
Shoot 1UP DXShmupA-
tl;drShoot 1UP DX is a Shmup where players control an entire squadron of ships at once, adding potentially dozens of ships to their force. There are multiple creative fun mechanics at work here, difficulty options to cater to every skill level, and just overall this is one of the most enjoyable Shmups I’ve ever played. It’s not as precise and well-crafted as Ikaruga, but it is arguably just as much of a blast to play, and Shmup fans should absolutely add this game to their collection, especially at the fantastic price of $6. Do not miss this one!
Shotgun Cop ManAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drShotgun Cop Man is an Action-Platformer and 2-Stick Shooter about the titular Shotgun Cop Man who has been sent on a mission to hell to arrest Satan, with this silly story joined by gameplay that has players using their firearms to propel themselves around the air as they fight demons. Movement and combat in this game is an absolute delight, and the absurdity of the story only adds to the joy of this game. The only thing lacking is the PC version’s level creator, but otherwise this is a must-have Action-Platformer on Nintendo Switch.
Shovel Knight DigPlatformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drShovel Knight Dig is a Platformer with strong Roguelike elements, tweaking the excellent Platformer gameplay of the original Shovel Knight and using it to have the player digging down into the earth in a Roguelike-style structure. This game captures much of what worked so well in the original Shovel Knight but recontextualizes it into a Roguelike experience, and for the most part this works brilliantly, though the high challenge level may put off fans of the original game. Still, if you’re not intimidated by a challenge, this is a superb game well worth playing.
Shovel Knight: Specter of TormentAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drShovel Knight: Specter of Torment is a standalone expansion to Shovel Knight, the second expansion out of four. This is an Action-Platformer that follows the Specter Knight boss from the first game, who has a unique move-set built around a wall run and a diagonal air slash attack. The game design and level design here is every bit as good as the first game, though it does re-use some assets and Specter Knight isn’t quite as fun a character to play as his shovel-wielding contemporary. Still, this is a solid entry in the series and an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
Shovel Knight: King of CardsAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drShovel Knight: King of Cards is a standalone expansion to Shovel Knight, the third expansion out of four. This is an Action-Platformer that follows the King Knight boss from the first game, who has a unique and fun move-set built around combo-ing shoulder bashes into pirouette spins. The game design and level design here is every bit as good as the first game, though it does re-use some assets and makes some changes to the map that are a bit disappointing. Also, the newly-added card game is decent, but nothing truly great. Still, this is a solid entry in the series and an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
Slay the SpireTurn-Based Card RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;drSlay the Spire is a game that combines a Card Battle RPG with Roguelike elements for an experience that’s extremely addictive. The game is not without its frustrations, in particular how much the element of luck plays into your success. However, the combination of excellent gameplay and a good amount of variety make this a game that more than makes up for its shortcomings.
Sonic ManiaPlatformerA-
tl;drSonic Mania is a Platformer that mixes classic throwback levels with newer, remixed stage design to create something unique and refreshing that stands as the best the series has ever been. It may not top Mario in my book, but it’s a must-have game regardless.
SoundfallTop-Down Action-RPG / Music-RhythmA-
tl;drSoundfall is a game that combines Action-RPG and Music-Rhythm elements, where players fight off hordes of enemies and hunt for loot while timing their attacks to the beat of a massive, varied, and overall excellent soundtrack. Some elements of the gameplay and presentation can get a tad repetitive, and there are a few tweaks I would have preferred, but overall this is a truly excellent game well worth playing.
South Park: The Stick of TruthTurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drSouth Park: The Stick of Truth is a Turn-Based RPG set in the universe of the irreverent TV show, perfectly mimicking its style and its excellent sense of humor. For fans of the show who somehow missed out on prior releases of this game, consider this a must-own. For those who haven’t seen the show, maybe a watch a few episodes first to see if South Park appeals to you. And for those who already got this game on other platforms, know that this is a good port, but not one that adds anything new.
Spyro Reignited TrilogyCompilation / 3D PlatformerA-
tl;drSpyro Reignited Trilogy is a collection of the original three PlayStation Spyro games, family-friendly 3D Platformers that have withstood the test of time and are presented here with absolutely gorgeous graphics. While there are a few elements that haven’t aged well, like the camera, on the whole this is an absolute joy that fans of platformers should consider a must-have.
Spyro + Crash Remastered Game BundleCompilation / 3D PlatformerA-
tl;dr Spyro + Crash Remastered Game Bundle is a Compilation containing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, with both of those games being full remakes and compilations of three classic family-friendly PlayStation 3D Platformers. All of the games included here are great, and buying them together shaves a bit off of the price you’d pay separately (even more if you catch a good sale). Platformer fans should absolutely consider getting this bundle, unless they already own one of these games.
Star Wars PinballCompilation / PinballA-
tl;drStar Wars Pinball is a collection of various digital Pinball tables Zen Pinball has released over the last decade, collected together and joined into a cohesive whole. The amount of value here for the $30 price tag is phenomenal, with some really excellent table designs, great gameplay, a fantastic presentation, and plenty of options and extra content. While there are a few tweaks that could still be made to improve the experience even more, overall this is one of the greatest Pinball games ever made, and if you enjoy Pinball and have a Switch, you need to have this game.
Steamworld DigPlatformerA-
tl;drSteamworld Dig is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mineshaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. This is a game well worth getting.
StrayMisc.A-
tl;dr Stray is a game that has players taking the role of a cat exploring a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk-style city, and while it is difficult to pin to a genre, it shines through with its blend of superb level design and gameplay variety, its engrossing story and lore, and its impressive graphics that, while clearly downgraded from other platforms, still looks fantastic on Nintendo Switch. And while I have some nitpicks with controls and occasionally unclear goals, overall I think this is a magnificent game that absolutely needs to be played.
Streets of Rage 4Arcade BrawlerA-
tl;drStreets of Rage 4 is a return to Sega’s classic Arcade Brawler franchise after an over 25 year absence, and perhaps the wait was worth it because this is not just the best game in the series, but one of the best games in the genre, with a gorgeous presentation, a fantastic soundtrack, and small but clever improvements to the core gameplay. There are still areas where this game could be improved, but overall this is a must-have game for fans of the genre, as well as co-op Action game fans in general.
Super Cable BoyPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Cable Boy is a challenging Platformer where players control a Game Boy-like device in a digital world. The visual presentation is striking and fits the game’s themes well, but what really stands out here is the excellent gameplay, which challenges players to swap between different “cartridges” (abilities) to perform some great acrobatic feats. There’s even a solid 2-player co-op mode here as well. In short, if you enjoy challenging Platformers, consider Super Cable Boy a must-have.
Super Mario 3D All-StarsCompilation / 3D PlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Mario 3D All-Stars is a compilation of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, all with improved resolution and full game soundtracks, and not much else. These games are legends, although of the three only Galaxy remains every bit as good as that legend. However, given the games’ age, the lack of enhancements, the lack of extra content, the high $60 price tag and the outrageous promise to yank the game from stores in a half a year, this otherwise must-have collection seems a lot less enticing than it should. It’s still a trio well worth owning for any fan of Platformers, but it’s one that’s hard for me to enthusiastically recommend.
Super Mario Bros. WonderPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. Wonder is a family-friendly Platformer that brings Mario back to 2D with brand new “wonder effects” that transform every level in the game in creative, inventive ways that infuse this game with tons of variety and personality. What’s more, this game has plenty of new multiplayer features and accessibility options to make this game ideal for younger and less-experienced players. This game is far more inspired than the New Super Mario Bros. games that preceded it… just don’t expect something as incredible as the classic games of Mario’s 8-bit and 16-bit eras or you’ll be disappointed. However, while this game doesn’t reach the same heights as Mario’s classic adventures, it is nevertheless a truly excellent Platformer that any fan of the genre should absolutely play.
Super Mario Party JamboreeParty Game / Minigame CollectionA-
tl;drSuper Mario Party Jamboree is, in my opinion, the absolute best that the Mario Party series of family-friendly Party Game and Minigame Collection titles has ever had to offer. This game has an absolute wealth of varied content, gives players the option to cut down on the series’ infamous randomness, and has some delightfully inspired game modes, including some excellent online-focused multiplayer play. Apart from underwhelming single-player (never this series’ focus), there’s little to complain about here, and so very much to love. Going forward, I believe this will be the Mario Party game all future titles in the series will be measured against.
Super Meat BoyPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Meat Boy is a challenging platformer with a great physics engine, superb gameplay, and a generally great presentation, and the Switch version even adds in a nice 2-player mode. But it also doesn’t have the original game’s fantastic soundtrack, and that’s a big loss for an otherwise incredible game.
Super Mega Baseball 3Sports (Baseball)A-
tl;drSuper Mega Baseball 3 improves on the previous game with a new franchise mode, customizable pennant races, various small gameplay improvements, and perhaps the best new feature: online cross-play, all while keeping the original game’s excellent deep but accessible family-friendly gameplay. If you’re looking for a baseball game on the Nintendo Switch, this is the one you want… just so long as you don’t mind the cartoony characters and lack of officially-licensed teams and players.
Super Mega Baseball 4Sports (Baseball)A-
tl;drSuper Mega Baseball 4 adds real-life retired pro players to its lineup, and makes a few other nice additions, but for the most part this is a game that doesn’t shake things up too much and simply provides us with yet another solid entry in a series known for its superb deep but accessible Baseball gameplay. The load times and aliasing on Nintendo Switch are disappointing, and those who own the prior game in the series may not find there to be quite enough new content here to make it worth an additional purchase, but players who want the best Baseball game on Nintendo Switch will nevertheless find this game to be a contender for that title.
Super Mega ZeroPlatformer / ShmupA-
tl;drSuper Mega Zero is a challenging Platformer with some Shmup sections where players control a zero who can’t jump, but who can touch numbers to jump or dash that many times. This is one of many creative gameplay mechanics that this game is constantly adding into the mix, and combined with excellent level design, a fantastic soundtrack, and some really fun (if a bit overly-easy) Shmup levels all make for a game that’s a lot of fun, and should be a no-brainer for fans of challenging Platformers.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s RevengeArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an Arcade Brawler that seeks to recapture the magic of the classic Ninja Turtles arcade games, and I don’t think it quite succeeds at that… but that’s okay because it’s a truly phenomenal entry in the genre in its own right, and one loaded with charm, great gameplay, and tons of wonderful little references to the Ninja Turtles franchise that are sure to please series fans and Arcade Brawler fans alike. If that describes you, you should definitely get ahold of this game.
Tetris Effect: ConnectedFalling Block PuzzleA-
tl;drTetris Effect: Connected is a version of the classic family-friendly Falling-Block Puzzle Game that gives the game an amazing audiovisual presentation with a fantastic soundtrack and beautiful visuals, a wealth of single-player and multiplayer game modes, and online multiplayer gameplay with cross-play and excellent matchmaking. It’s missing features I’d want to see and it has a few other minor issues, but overall this is quite possibly the best version of Tetris ever made. If you like Puzzle games, you need to own this game.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeA-
tl;drThe Binding of Isaac is a Two-Stick Shooter Roguelike that places you in the role of a young child fighting grotesque monsters with his tears. It’s a lot of fun, but the roguelike elements can make any given playthrough very hit-and-miss, which can be frustrating. It’s still well worth playing, though.
Thank Goodness You’re Here!Graphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Thank Goodness You’re Here! is a Graphic Adventure where players take the role of a quiet, diminutive salesman wandering around an absurd British town, helping the locals with their silly problems. This game is absolutely full of great humor, it’s wildly creative, and it manages to keep surprising you as you play it. It’s a bit too easy to get lost or not know where you need to go next, but this game’s wonderful humor and adorable charm far outweigh any issues it has. If you’re looking for a great comedy game, this is a must-play.
The Cosmic Wheel SisterhoodGraphic Adventure / Visual NovelA-
tl;dr The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a game with Graphic Adventure and Visual Novel elements that puts players in the role of an exiled witch who makes a forbidden deal with a powerful and ominous entity, starting a chain of events that has her reading cards to foretell the future for others in her coven during a highly contentious time This game’s story, characters, and soundtrack are all excellent, and while the card creation elements are poorly-explained, this is a minor complaint about a game that not only weaves a thoughtful and emotional story, but makes you the one weaving much of that story. I cannot recommend this enough.
The Jackbox Party Pack 3Compilation / Party GamesA-
tl;drThe Jackbox Party Pack 3 is a Collection of Party Games that includes five games that players play using their Smartphone instead of a controller. Of all the Jackbox collections so far, this is my favorite, with three of the games here being absolutely fantastic, and even the worst game here still has some excellent qualities. On top of that, there’s a lot of variety in this package, and some truly great presentation in some of the games here. In short, this is a must-have collection for fans of Party Games.
The MessengerAction-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drThe Messenger is an Action-Platformer that later in the game unfolds into a Metroidvania with strong gameplay, nostalgic visuals, and a great sense of humor, and it’s difficult without being as punishing as the Ninja Gaiden games that clearly inspired it. It’s just a pity that some design choices do still cause some frustration here and there.
The Red Strings ClubGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drThe Red Strings Club is a Graphic Adventure with an extremely well-written cerebral cyberpunk neo noir plot, and some great atmosphere to go with it, as well as some great bartending gameplay elements that fit surprisingly well with the game’s themes of emotional empathy and information gathering. It’s not super-long and the controls are less than ideal, but players looking for a fantastic, well-told story should absolutely look into this game.
The Walking Dead: The Complete First SeasonGraphic Adventure / Horror GameA-
tl;drThe Walking Dead: The Complete First Season brings to Switch the five numbered episodes and “400 Days” that collectively form the first game in the series of Graphic Adventure games set in the same universe as the TV show and comics. While many of the elements of this game have aged somewhat, together they still form a powerful experience that’s still well worth playing today, and anyone who missed out on it the first time should definitely give the game a try now.
Theatrhythm Final Bar LineMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drTheatrhythm Final Bar Line is the latest game in Square Enix’s self-celebratory family-friendly Music-Rhythm series, and it outdoes itself with an absolutely enormous list of great songs from throughout its history, with excellent gameplay that’s pretty accessible (though it sadly doesn’t have touchscreen support). The RPG elements here still seem unnecessary and superfluous, and there are a few other minor complaints, but overall this game should be considered an absolute must-have for Music-Rhythm fans.
ThumperMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drThumper is a music-rhythm game that’s nothing like other games in the genre, making it into a simple but compelling high-speed race into dark, hostile territory with an aggressive thumping soundtrack and visuals ripped from heavy metal album covers.
TimespinnerMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drTimespinner is a Metroidvania about a time-traveling girl looking to use her abilities to take down the evil empire that destroyed her village, or perhaps find a way to set things right. This is a game that is very clearly trying to imitate Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in numerous ways, and for the most part it does a stellar job of it, though the game is overall smaller and its map more spread out, which lead to some other issues. However, while it may not be quite as good as Symphony, it’s still a superb Metroidvania, and one well worth playing for fans of the genre.
Tiny MetalTurn-Based StrategyA-
tl;drTiny Metal is a Turn-Based Strategy game that attempts to show us what the Advance Wars series would look like if it was done using more modern graphics, and it succeeds brilliantly. It’s just a shame that it’s a bit feature-poor in comparison to the legacy it’s taking after. Also, be sure to mess with the settings before you start, as the default settings can cause issues.
Tinykin3D PlatformerA-
tl;drTinykin is a family-friendly 3D Platformer where players control a tiny space explorer controlling a horde of insect creatures to explore a planet that’s clearly Earth from an insect’s point of view. However, despite the similarities to the Pikmin franchise, Tinykin stands on its own, offering excellent 3D Platformer gameplay with a wonderful world to explore and tons of secrets to find. There are a few areas where this game could be improved, but even so this is a must-play game for anyone who enjoys this genre.
Toki Tori 2+: Nintendo Switch EditionPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drToki Tori 2 is a Puzzle-Platformer that plays very differently from the first game, with players limited to only two basic abilities, and progressing through the game by learning how the various parts of the environment react to those abilities and each other. It’s a refreshing and streamlined approach that suits the game very well, making it a unique experience that’s bolstered by an excellent presentation, with some extremely clever puzzle design.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE EncoreTurn-Based JRPGA-
tl;drTokyo Mirage Sessions is a Turn-Based RPG that is a port of the Wii U game that is at least loosely tied to the Fire Emblem and Persona franchises, but is really its own thing. It’s a game that feels like its characters, setting and story were pulled straight from an anime, with a solid presentation that makes the game feel truly unique. The gameplay is also pretty good, despite a few frustrating elements popping up from time to time. JRPG fans should definitely give this game a look.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2Compilation / Sports (Skateboarding)A-
tl;drTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a superb Compilation and Remake of the first two highly-celebrated games in the Skateboarding series that updates their gameplay and combines them into one whole cohesive experience while retaining what made them so beloved in the first place. The Nintendo Switch version is a severe downgrade in both graphical fidelity and performance from the versions of the game on more powerful hardware, and if you can get one of those versions, I highly recommend it. However, this is still a very playable version of the game and is otherwise intact and feature-complete, including solid online play. If you’ve been waiting for a great Skateboarding game on Nintendo Switch, this is it.
Toodee and TopdeePuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drToodee and Topdee is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has players swapping between two characters – one who controls like a Platformer, and one who controls like a Top-Down character-driven Puzzle Game character. This game’s fantastic level design makes wonderful use of the game’s central gameplay mechanic, and supplements it with a nice presentation and adorable characters. There are a few places where this game could have been improved, but overall this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that fans of the genre should definitely play.
TransistorTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drTransistor is a Top-Down Action-RPG where combat involves bursts of action interspersed with the ability to stop time and set up a powerful series of automated attacks. It’s refreshingly original and has a superb presentation, although the combat can at times feel a bit uneven.
Trine 4: The Nightmare PrincePuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drTrine 4 returns the series to its classic 2D Puzzle-Platformer gameplay, and it is in absolutely fine form here, with jaw-droppingly gorgeous graphics, superb puzzles, and some of the best Co-Op you’re going to find in any game anywhere, with a focus on using the unique abilities of its three protagonists to get past puzzles and obstacles. It’s unfortunate that the combat is sub-standard, because otherwise everything about this game is an absolute triumph.
TunicIsometric MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drTunic is an Isometric Metroidvania where players control an anthropomorphic fox on a quest to… well, you’re gonna’ have to figure that part out yourself. This game’s way of having players try to figure out what they’re meant to be doing from incomplete information is one of Tunic’s greatest strengths, and it has a lot of them, including clever level design, deceptively beautiful graphics, and a great soundtrack. Really, the biggest flaw I can point to here is that the challenging combat and confusing goal structure is likely to scare off less-skilled players who may find themselves otherwise attracted to this game’s approachable presentation. However, for most players Tunic will be an absolute delight.
UFO 50CompilationA-
tl;drUFO 50 is a Compilation containing 50 retro-style games purportedly created by fictional game developer UFOSoft. This collection has a ton of variety and creativity, and while not every game ends up working out, enough succeed to make this collection worthwhile, especially for players who enjoy retro-style games.
Ultimate Chicken HorsePlatformer / Party GameA-
tl;drUltimate Chicken Horse is a family-friendly Platformer with a robust creation tool set and a focus on multiplayer gameplay that challenges players to create levels that they can beat but the other players can’t. It’s a tremendously good time, and while the presentation and core gameplay aren’t on par with Super Mario Maker 2, the multiplayer in this game is clearly superior, making this a fantastic party game. If you’re looking for a good supplement to Mario Maker or a fun game to bring out at a party, Ultimate Chicken Horse is a must-have.
UnavowedGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drUnavowed is a Graphic Adventure about a new inductee into a paranormal investigation organization solving gruesome mysteries and finding answers about the demon who possessed you. The game looks great, the writing is sharp, the characters are fantastic, the voice acting is excellent, and the character-swapping mechanic gives players numerous ways to solve problems. The game doesn’t provide you quite as much freedom as one would hope, but overall this game should be considered a must-play for fans of Graphic Adventures and especially fans of classic LucasArts-style point-and-click games.
UndertaleTurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drUndertale is an RPG that does all sorts of wild, inventive things with the genre, from its bullet hell-esque battle system to its quirky story about a world of monsters that you can opt to talk to or befriend instead of fight. It’s not an RPG for everyone, but fans of the genre absolutely should give it a try.
Unicorn OverlordReal-Time Strategy-RPGA-
tl;dr Unicorn Overlord is a Real-Time Strategy-RPG that plays like the classic Ogre Battle games, but is superior to those games in pretty much every way. An absolutely gorgeous presentation, well-crafted strategic gameplay, and free exploration of the game’s world all make this a game that both RPG and Strategy fans should definitely try out.
Unravel TwoPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drUnravel Two is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing as a pair of small yarn-creatures as they use their yarn to help each other get past various obstacles in a real world environment. The presentation, while not on par with other versions, is still fantastic, and the puzzles are superb, whether you’re playing solo or in co-op. The only thing holding this game back is its short length, but with its low price, this game is absolutely worth getting on Switch if you don’t already have it elsewhere.
Valkyria ChroniclesTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drValkyria Chronicles is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that does a few unique and interesting things with the genre while delivering an absolutely gorgeous anime-inspired cel-shaded presentation. A must-have for fans of the genre.
Valkyria Chronicles 4Turn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drValkyria Chronicles 4 is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that takes place at roughly the same time as the first game but with a different set of characters. Like the first game, the fourth game in the series combines XCOM-style Strategy-RPG gameplay with real-time movement and a beautiful anime-esque cel-shaded presentation, and it builds on the formula set in the first game with a new unit type as well as the ability to form commanders. Make no mistake, this is an improvement over the first game, but it’s a marginal one. However, this still means it is a must-have for Strategy-RPG fans, especially those who love anime.
Valkyria Chronicles + Valkyria Chronicles 4 BundleCompilation / Turn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drValkyria Chronicles + Valkyria Chronicles 4 Bundle is a Compilation of the two titular games, both outstanding XCOM-style Strategy-RPGs with wonderful and unique gameplay and a gorgeous cel-shaded anime-style presentation. This bundle offers a decent savings over buying both games separately too, though be aware that it doesn’t come with the Valkyria Chronicles 4 DLC that was in that game’s Complete Edition. Still, this is an excellent price on two fantastic games, and you’re still getting a great deal even if you decide you want to buy the DLC later.
ValleyFirst-Person PlatformerA-
tl;drValley is a First-Person game without much in the way of shooting and without any difficult puzzles, but with some really excellent platforming mechanics and great atmosphere (so long as you don’t mind its cringe-worthy story and the graphical downgrade from other platforms). The game isn’t very difficult, and it sadly doesn’t make the fullest use of the great potential of its gameplay, but it has enough moments of pure joy during its short length that it’s worth a look.
Vampire SurvivorsArcade / RoguelikeA-
tl;drVampire Survivors is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players automatically attack, and must work their way through thousands of enemies while carefully selecting their upgrades. The game can seem a bit simple and repetitive at first, and the new 4-player co-op mode is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall this is a delightfully compelling Action game, and at $5 it’s an absolute steal. Definitely a must-have for Action fans.
Vitamin Connection2-Stick Shooter / ArcadeA-
tl;drVitamin Connection is a Two-Stick Shooter that splits up the ship’s functions between two Joy-Cons in a way that makes this game ideal for two-player co-op. It’s got an appealing presentation, a great soundtrack, and makes some really clever use of the Joy-Cons’ functionality, and really the only negative things I can say about it are that it’s not a game you can play in portable mode, and it’s not a game you’ll really want to play solo. But if you have a friend to join you, this game is a must-have.
VVVVVVPlatformerA-
tl;drVVVVVV is a gravity-changing Platformer designed to look like an old-school Commodore 64 game, but its simple exterior hides an extremely well-designed game underneath, with a memorable soundtrack, excellent level design, and a really good challenge level. Also, the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with more features and a better framerate than other versions. It’s just a shame that the game is still too damn short. Still, it’s amazing while it lasts.
WandersongPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drWandersong is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players in the role of a bard looking to save the world by singing different musical notes to solve puzzles. Despite its simple, unimpressive graphics and lack of challenging gameplay, this game has an absolutely charming presentation, a wonderful story, excellent music, and is overall a fantastic experience for all ages.
We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal ReverieArcadeA-
tl;drWe Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie is a remake of a PlayStation 2 classic Arcade-style game that has you rolling a ball to pick up various objects to make your ball bigger to roll up even bigger objects. This is the second game in the Katamari series, and takes the concept to even kookier places than the first game, but overall remains a great blend of surprisingly compelling gameplay and a delightfully silly nonsensical presentation. This remaster adds a few improvements, but mostly this is a fairly minor update of the classic game rather than an entirely new experience. Having said that, it’s still a joy to play, and I highly recommend it.
What the Golf?Sports (Golf) / Misc.A-
tl;drWhat the Golf? Is a family-friendly game that starts with the basic concept of golf and then re-works it and messes with its basic fundamentals in as many ways as possible. The result is a game with tons of variety, a great sense of humor, and a surprisingly fun multiplayer mode. Definitely worth a try even if you’re not a fan of golf.
Winds Of ChangeVisual NovelA-
tl;drWinds of Change is a Visual Novel advertised as “The Ultimate Furry Tale”, but far from being anything salacious, this is a surprisingly compelling fantasy tale about a seer coming into possession of a dangerous magic blade sought after by an evil empire. The story takes quite a few common genre conventions and explores them in unique and interesting ways, with strong writing, good characters, a solid presentation, and plenty of meaningful player choices. Even if you’re not normally a “furry” fan, if you enjoy fantasy stories you’ll want to give this game a look.
World of Final Fantasy MaximaTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;drWorld of Final Fantasy Maxima is a fanservice-filled love letter to fans of the Final Fantasy games, with gameplay similar to the Pokemon games, although with plenty enough originality to set it apart. The game has a great presentation with excellent music, and there’s some good depth to the game’s battle systems. Fans of the Final Fantasy series, fans of Monster collecting games, and fans of traditional JRPGs should definitely give this game a look.
World of GooPuzzleA-
tl;drWorld of Goo is a physics-based puzzle game that’s oozing with personality and overflowing with inventive ideas.
WunderlingAuto-RunnerA-
tl;drWunderling is an Auto-Runner that has players in the role of a Goomba-like creature hunting down this game’s stand-in for Mario. The concept here is clever, and the story surrounding it even more so, but what’s really fantastic about this game is its excellent level design and well-crafted gameplay. If you enjoy Platformers, Wunderling is definitely a game you should try.
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive EditionJRPGA-
tl;drXenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition takes the epic, sprawling JRPG from 10 years ago and finally gives it the release it truly deserves, updating the visuals and music, adding in tons of great quality of life improvements, and adding a brand new 10 hour epilogue. The result is the best version of a spectacular JRPG. There are some areas that could have been improved even further, but overall this is a must-play entry in the genre.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3JRPGA-
tl;drXenoblade Chronicles 3 is a JRPG that features a story about two teams of soldiers on opposite sides of a bitter war who find themselves forced to work together as they’re hunted by their former comrades and try to find the truth behind their endless struggle. While Xenoblade Chronicles 3 may not be quite as impressive as any of the prior games in the series, it features the series’ most well-rounded gameplay, and an outstanding cast of characters in an excellent story, making this my favorite game in the franchise. If you’re a JRPG fan on Nintendo Switch, this is definitely worth a look.
XeodrifterMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drXeodrifter is a Metroidvania game that really does a good job of feeling like a Metroid game, although it’s a bite-size experience that lacks the scope of the actual Metroid titles.
Yars: Recharged2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drYars: Recharged is a 2-Stick Shooter inspired by the Atari classic Yars’ Revenge, but this game far surpasses its inspiration, using elements from that game to craft an excellent boss rush-style 2-stick shooter where players must whittle down enemies’ defenses. Regardless of whether or not you’ve played the original, this is an outstanding Action game, and at only $10 it’s an easy game to recommend.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DanaAction-RPGA-
tl;drYs VIII is an Action-RPG where you play an adventurer caught in a shipwreck and charting out the mysterious island he finds himself on while trying to uncover its secrets. It’s a really fun game with a lot of variety, but the graphics of the Switch version are clearly inferior to other versions of the game. You should definitely get this game if you’re a fan of the genre, but the Switch is not the best place to be playing it.
