GameGenreGrade
AlekonFirst-Person Shooter / Misc.A
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre.
Hellblade: Senua’s SacrificeGraphic Adventure / ActionA
tl;drHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an absolutely fantastic Graphic Adventure that delivers an incredibly immersive experience as players are put in the shoes of someone with severe mental illness on a journey into a hellish fantasy domain. The Switch version isn’t quite as impressive as what’s on other platforms, but it still looks fantastic – one of the best-looking games on the Switch. And while the action sequences aren’t quite up to par with the rest of the game, on the whole this is a superb experience that is a truly must-play game.
The Stanley Parable: Ultra DeluxeWalking SimulatorA
tl;drThe Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a port of the decade-old critically-acclaimed fourth wall-breaking Walking Simulator that updates the visuals and adds some surprisingly clever new content that makes this game worth a look even for players who previously played through earlier versions of the game. This is still every bit as funny, rule-breaking, and creative as it was when it first released. In fact, with what’s been added here, it is arguably even more so. Do not miss it.
InscryptionTurn-Based Card Game / Roguelike / First-Person Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drInscryption is a deck-building Card Game and Roguelike with a First-Person Graphic Adventure framing device with players finding themselves in a dark cabin with a mysterious, sinister dealer playing a card game about sacrificing animals. The card game itself is excellent, and the foreboding dark atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, that same darkness can make this game hard to see in handheld mode, and there are a few other minor frustrations here and there. However, in spite of these issues, Inscryption is a macabre delight, and it’s a game I highly recommend, especially to fans of similar games like Slay the Spire.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred HeroesTurn-Based JRPGB-
tl;drEiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a Turn-Based JRPG created to be a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series, and as such it features a huge roster of 120 recruitable characters. There’s a lot to like here, with good combat, an interesting story, and a great presentation, but the game suffers from massive pacing issues, far too many characters that seem disconnected from the plot, and some really awful performance issues on Nintendo Switch that make even using the game’s menus a horrible slog. I do think the good outweighs the bad here, but this is definitely a far lesser game than it could have been, and it’s one you may be better off getting on another platform.
Eiyuden Chronicle: RisingAction-Platformer / Action-RPGD+
tl;drEiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an Action-Platformer with RPG elements with a great presentation, but this game’s pacing is absolutely abysmal, forcing you to sit through countless loading screens, slow-moving conversations, and other speed bumps to the point where the actual gameplay seems scarce, and even when you do finally get to it, it doesn’t seem anywhere near special enough to be worth all the tedium. Skip this one.
