Review:

Skypeace is an Arcade-style game released on Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2018, with players taking the role of an anime-style character on a flying surfboard. This game plays a bit like a Shmup minus the shooting, or “Avoid-’em-Up”, as I’ve seen them called, though it bears one distinct difference in that players can only move in a three-by-three grid, with neutral input returning the player to center.

The presentation is one of the better parts of this game, although the light synthesized soundtrack isn’t especially noteworthy, but the character art and pixel art 2D visuals are quite nice, with fluid animation and a good sense of speed. However, this speed is also a double-edged sword, as there’s so much happening on screen that it can sometimes be difficult to get a clear sense of what’s happening or properly anticipate danger ahead. Also, while the visuals are nice, they can get a tad repetitive.

Beyond these issues, Skypeace is a decent Arcade-style game, albeit a very simple one. Collect coins and gems, avoid enemies. That’s it. To the game’s credit, the level layouts are at least somewhat well-done, but if you’re looking for any depth, you won’t find it here.

Having said that, it bears mention that Skypeace is a $1 game, and at that price what’s here seems decent enough. I wish the visuals were cleaner and less repetitive, and I wish there were more nuance to the gameplay, but for $1, this is a decent time-waster.

tl;dr – Skypeace is an Arcade-style game where players take the role of an anime-style character on a flying surfboard in fast-paced Arcade-style “Avoid-’em-Up” gameplay. It’s simple and repetitive, and the visuals are at times difficult to keep track of, but for only $1 you may still find this to be a decent time-waster.
