Review:
Formula Bit Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game released in 2021 on PC, and then ported in 2022 to PlayStation 4, Xbox one, and Nintendo Switch. This game has players driving F1-style cars on closed circuit race tracks.
This game’s visuals use simple, colorful 3D for the tracks and vehicles, backed by a decent but forgettable synthesized soundtrack. While clearly nothing impressive, this is still pretty appealing as a vaguely retro-style experience.
The game offers three different camera angles, though there’s all some variation of an overhead view – there’s a top-down view, top-down at an angle, and then a view trailing loosely behind your car from up above. I was tempted to call this game a Top-Down Racing game, but I found the best of these views to be the one following behind your vehicle, so I decided against it. Personally, I would have liked an option for a more traditional viewpoint inside or just behind your car, but what’s here more or less works, I suppose.
For the gameplay, I found the racers to be a tad unwieldy, but this was something I was able to get used to. There’s a gradually-charging “turbo” button, but I found that it was best to use this sparingly and only on straightaways, otherwise it would only lead to crashes that make using the turbo more trouble than it’s worth. Other than this, the racing in this game was fine. Nothing especially noteworthy, but fine.
The game has 20 tracks, which seems a bit low to me, but the $5 price tag makes it easier to overlook this. However, somewhat more difficult to overlook is the lack of multiplayer. For this game to stand as a solid single-player experience, it would need a campaign that has more meat to it, and I’m sorry to say this game’s single-player mode just doesn’t do anything of the sort, only having players go into individual races.
I find myself not having much more to say about Formula Bit Racing. The racing is decent but not especially noteworthy, devoid of options you tend to look for in Racing games, especially multiplayer, and not containing much content, but offsetting this flaw with its low price tag. It’s a decent enough Racing game, but it’s far from anything special or exciting.
tl;dr – Formula Bit Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game that’s fairly decent, but it lacks content, options, and multiplayer. Some of this can be forgiven due to the low $5 price, but even so this is far from a noteworthy or memorable entry in the genre.
