Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack February 2025 Release for Game Boy Advance – Overview

Nintendo just released one more game on their Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Game Boy Advance app. Let’s have a look!

tl;drThis game abandons the shape-changing and most of the puzzle elements of Wario Land 2 and 3 to be a more traditional Platformer like the original Wario Land, while adding in a colorful, detailed, delightfully expressive presentation in line with the WarioWare series. The result is a game I would argue is one of the best in the Wario Land series, second only to Virtual Boy Wario Land. If you’re a fan of Platformers, this is absolutely a game you should want in your collection.

I have previously reviewed this game in its Wii U Virtual Console release, where I considered it one of the finest releases on that platform that had yet to make it to Nintendo Switch Online on Nintendo Switch. And as I say above, I think this is second only to Virtual Boy Wario Land in the series. I’m clearly not alone in seeing this as a highlight of the Wario franchise, as both Pizza Tower and Antonblast were clearly inspired by this specific game.

In short, this is a truly must-play Platformer, and an absolutely welcome addition to the Game Boy Advance app’s lineup!

tl;dr – The Game Boy Advance app gets one game, Wario Land 4, but this one game is a phenomenal platformer and one of the best games in the Wario Land series overall, and one that is still to this day inspiring other game creators. In short, this is a great addition to the Game Boy Advance app – play it!

I never really got into the NSO apps. If I were to, it would be the GBA one for sure, but I couldn’t ever justify paying the money when I hardly make time for gaming anyway. I’m wondering what will be my tipping point. Whatever it is, it’s nice to know that there are gems like this that will be waiting for me.

Personally, I think the SNES app is the real star. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island, Panel de Pon, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out, Star Fox, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Kirby Super Star, Super Mario Kart, Super Ghouls ‘N’ Ghosts… so much good stuff…

But yeah, the GBA app is shaping up quite nicely too. Wario Land 4, WarioWare, Mario & Luigi, Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion, and Zelda: Minish Cap are all outstanding. Plus… a lot of the games in the above list are here too, albeit in worse form.

If for some reason you haven’t played the above games and can set aside the time to, I do highly recommend it!

Ah, but see, I grew up with a GBA and not an SNES so about 80% of my drive here is replaying Golden Sun, haha. I also have a weird amount of nostalgia from the Robirdo boss in Super Mario Advance. Panel de Pon and it’s derivatives (like Pokémon Puzzle League for N64) are excellent though. It’s a shame we don’t have more like it for the Switch. Flipon is the only one I am aware of.

Huh… yeah, Flipon is the only one I can think of at the moment. But honestly, I’d still rather play Panel de Pon, despite the untranslated Japanese in the menus – the soundtrack is just amazing.
