Review:
Pocket Pool, released in 2022 on Nintendo Switch, is nominally a Pool game, but in many ways it seems closer to Mini-Golf. You’re still aiming your cue ball at one or more balls you’re meant to sink into a pocket, but in this game the tables are various zany shapes, with all sorts of ramps and moving obstacles in your way.
The presentation here is simple, but decent, depicting the table and balls using simple 3D visuals, with the tables surrounded by a sea of small objects doing various little things to make for a bit of visual variety. This is backed by a whimsical soundtrack that isn’t memorable, but works well enough for the game.
As for the gameplay, I think this is an entertaining spin on the genre, though it doesn’t do the best job at indicating where your shots will send the ball, and players buying this game expecting, you know, an actual Pool game may be disappointed.
However, as a unique spin on the genre, and one that only costs $4, Pocket Pool is a fun little distraction. And if you’re a fan of both Pool and Mini-Golf, I think you’ll find this to be an amusing blend of the two game types. It’s not especially deep, but I think it mostly succeeds at what it’s aiming for.
tl;dr – Pocket Pool is a game that combines mechanics of Pool and Mini-Golf to make something quirky that’s sorta’ halfway between the two. It may not be what fans of Pool are expecting, and the game isn’t especially deep, but it’s an enjoyable if somewhat simple game that’s worth the low $4 price tag.
