Review:
The Super Spy is a First-Person Arcade-style Action game released in 1990 in Japanese arcades, then brought to the NEOGEO home console in 1991 as a launch title, with a port to Neo Geo CD in 2016 after releasing on that platform in Japan as a launch title. This modern release sees the game coming to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2018. This game has players using fists, hand weapons, and firearms to fight through an army of terrorists.
This game has been compared to the following year’s release Crossed Swords, which features a somewhat-similar First-Person gameplay, but with a medieval fantasy theme instead of a spies and terrorists theme. However, I think Crossed Swords is by far the better of the two, with much more well-crafted gameplay. By comparison, The Super Spy seems like it either encourages button-mashing or hit-and-run tactics, which is far less engrossing.
This release of the game includes a new “Hi-Score Mode” that challenges players to score as much as they can in one run before seeing a game over screen. There is also a new “Caravan Mode” that does much the same, but with the limit being five minutes. In addition, this release of the game includes both English and Japanese versions, and gives players a decent array of options, including various display options, sound options, challenge modifiers, button mapping, and online leaderboards.
Overall, I think that while The Super Spy certainly has unique gameplay, that gameplay is far too shallow and lacking in strategy to be worthwhile. If you want something a bit like this but much better-executed, and don’t mind a fantasy-themed game, get Crossed Swords instead.
tl;dr – The Super Spy is a First-Person Arcade-style Action game that puts players in the role of a spy fighting terrorists with fists, hand weapons, and occasionally guns. It’s a fairly unique game, but it’s too shallow to hold your interest for very long, and the fantasy-themed Crossed Swords does this style of gameplay (more or less) much better.
