Review:
HIX: Puzzle Islands is a family-friendly Puzzle game released on Nintendo Switch in 2021. In this game, players must swap hexagonal tiles to restore pathways that were destroyed by the devil-like Dix in 180 levels.
I’ve seen games with this style of gameplay before. Most notably, it has been done quite well in the game Kittens and Yarn, and somewhat less well in Hex Cats. The basic premise remains the same though – you’re trying to make all paths connect their source to their other end in an unbroken line, and usually you’re doing so with multiple cris-crossing lines. The gameplay here is about as good as this formula generally gets, with gameplay that works well, doesn’t waste your time with long loading screens, and has full touchscreen support when playing in portable mode.
The presentation is quite nice too, with some nice colorful visuals that seem to combine 2D and simple 3D elements, all joined by a relaxed synthesized soundtrack that fits this game’s chill tone perfectly.
Honestly, it’s hard to find much to complain about here. HIX: Puzzle Islands doesn’t break any new ground or do anything truly extraordinary, but what it does do, it does very well. If you enjoy Puzzle games and want something relaxing and fairly inexpensive with a price tag of only $8, this is a good choice.
tl;dr – HIX: Puzzle Islands is a family-friendly Puzzle Game that has players swapping hexagonal tiles to try to restore pathways that were destroyed by the devil-like Dix. This game doesn’t do anything revolutionary, but it is nevertheless a wonderful relaxed Puzzle game that fans of the genre will likely find well worth picking up.
