Review:

Virtua Fighter V is a Fighting Game that originally released in Japanese arcades in 2006, and since then it has been updated and re-released on numerous platforms, with the latest version of the game releasing in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025, and then coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

I’ll say right now, I’ve never personally cared for the Virtua Fighter franchise. To me, it has always seemed stiff and unsatisfying to play, and this latest release of Virtua Fighter 5 doesn’t change my opinion. Fans of the series will tell you its gameplay is deep and technical, but for me it remains frustrating and inaccessible for newer players looking to have some sort of strategy beyond button-mashing. To be clear, I’m not saying that strategy doesn’t exist, I’m saying it’s not apparent to players who don’t want to invest the time into finding this series’ depth.

The R.E.V.O. World Stage version of Virtua Fighter 5 adds the titular World Stage campaign, which has players facing off against opponents whose fighting style is based on real-life tournament champions. This release also features the use of rollback netcode and cross-play in online play, which should please players looking to take on opponents online. On the other hand, this is a 20 year-old game, and even as of this update it only includes 17 playable characters. It’s hard not to feel like this is a case of skimpy and aged reheated leftovers.

The presentation of this game doesn’t help either. While certainly not bad, this game’s age does show, and while it might have looked great back in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 days, we’ve seen far more visually-thrilling Fighting Games since then.

Now, I need to take a step back and say that while this game feels dated in numerous ways, to its credit the price reflects this – at only $20, it’s clear that Sega isn’t positioning this as a modern release on par with the likes of Street Fighter 6. Rather, this is a solid port of an older game with a few extra features. And if you’re a Virtua Fighter fan, or just an overall fan of the Fighting Game genre, that in itself might be more than enough to justify a purchase. For me, a rehash of a game that’s two decades old that I didn’t enjoy in the first place isn’t one I’m especially enamored with.

tl;dr – Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is an updated port of a Fighting Game that is now 20 years old, and it shows. That isn’t to say it looks or plays poorly (though I personally find it stiff and just not fun to control), but that it doesn’t hold up to modern entries in the genre. However, this is a solid port, and with its $20 budget price tag it’s sure to satisfy fans of the series. I just don’t see this having the same appeal for most players, even fans of the Fighting Game genre.

Grade: C+
