Review:

Developer Simogo has gone all-in on Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, and as of now, all of their Nintendo Switch releases have received free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Let’s take a look at how that affects Lorelei and the Laser Eyes!

Supposedly, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition release brings the game’s framerate and resolution up to 120FPS/1440p or 60FPS/4K in docked mode, and 120FPS/1080p in handheld mode, but in practice, I couldn’t see any difference between playing the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the game – to my eyes, they both look the same, even still having the same aliasing. What’s more, I saw no option to change between performance and graphics modes in the game’s menus. Did they somehow forget to add the intended graphic enhancements in this release? Strange.

Surprisingly, the one biggest change here seems to be the one they’re not advertising, improved loading times. On Nintendo Switch, it took 32 seconds to load to the opening logos, and another 3 seconds to load an individual level. On Nintendo Switch 2, those times are cut to 11 seconds and 2 seconds.

It’s not much of an improvement, but I suppose it’s better than nothing, and I can’t complain too much about a free upgrade, even if it’s a pretty negligible upgrade. As a result, my assessment of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes remains pretty much the same as when it released on Nintendo Switch, for better or worse.

tl;dr – Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a Graphic Adventure game with an extremely strong focus on its Puzzle gameplay, with some really excellent puzzle design that will thrill seasoned puzzle-solvers looking for something challenging and original, but that might cause more casual puzzlers to balk. Add to this an absolutely amazing visual presentation and less-than-amazing controls, and you have something of a mixed bag that some players will absolutely love while others will hate it. Still, I do think the positives outweigh the negatives here, and the game’s target audience will likely be truly delighted with this game.

Developer Simogo has gone all-in on Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, and as of now, all of their Nintendo Switch releases have received free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Let’s take a look at how that affects Sayonara Wild Hearts!

Strange.

One change that is present is a new “Remix Arcade” mode, which appears to just be a continuous play of the entire game all in one go rather than selecting individual levels. I suppose this is a nice addition, but it’s hardly anything truly game-changing.

Surprisingly, the one biggest change here seems to be the one they’re not advertising, improved loading times. On Nintendo Switch, it took 22 seconds to load to the opening intro, and another 5 seconds to load an individual level. On Nintendo Switch 2, those times are cut to 9 seconds and 2 seconds.

It’s not much of an improvement, but then there was never really much to improve in Sayonara Wild Hearts. The game’s stylish audiovisual presentation never relied on high graphical fidelity, so it’s not a great shock that the change isn’t drastic here, but it’s surprising that the only change I could clock was to the… well, clock. The loading times. Between that and the Remix Arcade mode, you’re getting the slightest of upgrades here. Still, Sayonara Wild Hearts remains an absolutely incredible game, and I still highly recommend it.

tl;dr – Sayonara Wild Hearts is a cool, stylish Arcade-style game that ties together multiple elements into simple but fast-paced gameplay that repeatedly finds new ways to surprise the player, all while delivering a stellar, memorable presentation. It has some issues with wild fluctuations in difficulty level, and it’s over far too soon, but this is a unique experience well worth having on the Switch 2.
