Review:

Hyper Torque Racing is a Simulation-style Racing game released on Nintendo Switch in 2023, and it gives players F1-style races in a low-poly 3D visual style similar to classic Racing Games like Virtua Racing.

I’m not opposed to games that evoke a retro style of visuals, and there’s some charm to this game’s style, but it lacks anything memorable to set it apart or make it distinct next to the same classic games it evokes. However, the real flaw with the visuals is that even though they look primitive, they still can’t maintain a consistent, smooth framerate. What’s more, this game completely fails to deliver any sort of sense of speed.

But while the visuals are disappointing, it’s the sound that absolutely drops the ball here. Every facet of the sound falls flat, from engine sounds that lack any sort of power, to collision noises that barely register as anything more than the slightest tap.

Unfortunately, this seems to reflect the gameplay as well. There’s no nuance here, and nothing feels right, with physics that are neither realistic or even consistent. Turning is clunky and unsatisfying, I already mentioned the lack of any sense of speed, and frequently I found competing vehicles overtaking me on straightaways in a way that seemed inexplicable and unavoidable.

It all adds up to a game that is just not satisfying in any way. Hyper Torque Racing has a nice nostalgic look to it, but there’s nothing distinct about it, the sound is awful, and the actual gameplay is terrible. There are multiple other better retro Racing games on Nintendo Switch, including an excellent version of Virtua Racing. Play one of those instead.

tl;dr – Hyper Torque Racing is a Simulation-style Racing Game imitating retro-style games in the genre like Virtua Racing, but it lacks a distinct style, has awful sound, and terrible gameplay. Pass on this one.
