Review:
Egglien is a Platformer released in 2022 on PC and ported in 2023 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This game takes place after the destruction of Earth, where an alien is gifted with the ability to produce rapid-fire eggs and tasked with restoring Earth by… apparently beating the other aliens that have been sent to stop it. Yeah, the plot doesn’t make a lot of sense.
The game is presented with 4-color monochrome 2D pixel art visuals clearly designed to mimic the original Game Boy, with a synthesized soundtrack to match. I normally tend to think that this sort of visual style is done more to be lazy than for aesthetic reasons, but I have to admit the visuals do have a sort of simple charm to them.
As for the gameplay itself, players can move and jump, and pressing jump in the air fires a stream of eggs downward, acting both as a temporary rocket propulsion and as a downward attack. Using this attack and environmental hazards, players need to take out every enemy in a stage to proceed to the next stage.
There’s nothing revolutionary here, but it largely works. However, there are flaws – the limited screen size can mean that you bump into enemies and enemy attacks more often than you should, especially since enemies can attack you from off-screen. Also, the gameplay can get a tad repetitive due to its simplicity.
Overall, I think Egglien is a decent time-waster, but it’s not a game that’s likely to wow anyone. If you’re looking for an inexpensive Platformer on Nintendo Switch, you have numerous better options, but I don’t think you’ll be terribly upset if you get this one.
tl;dr – Egglien is a Platformer where players control an alien who shoots rapid-fire eggs out of its bottom, and using this it must defeat all enemies in a stage. The Game Boy-style presentation is okay, and the core gameplay works, but there’s nothing here to truly set this game apart. It’s an okay time-waster, but you have numerous better options for inexpensive Platformers on Nintendo Switch.
