Review:
Devil May Cry V is a Spectacle Fighter that originally released in 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with an expanded Special Edition version released in 2020 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Then, in 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 owners received a Devil Hunter Edition containing all previously-released content and DLC for the game, minus a few omissions cut to keep performance steady – this release doesn’t have Legendary Dark Knight Mode, Turbo Mode, or ray-tracing.
The gameplay in Devil May Cry is as refined and well-crafted as the series has seen thus far, with players given three playable characters that they play at different times in the main campaign (the mechanical-armed Nero, the multi fighting style Dante, and the familiar-summoning V), a fourth bonus playable character (mirror image-summoning Vergil), and plenty of optional upgrades for these characters to build them up to fit your preferences. And all of this with some truly exquisite over-the-top fluid, satisfying action befitting the series that codified the “Spectacle Fighter” style of game. Just for personal preference, I still prefer the control and fluidity of the Bayonetta games, but I could easily see others preferring this game, because it is still a true delight to play.
However, the big question here is one of performance, and simply put, this is a phenomenal port. While I already noted the lack of ray-tracing, this game otherwise looks quite close to the version running on other modern hardware, running at full 60FPS framerates in both docked and handheld mode, and even going up to somewhere around 90FPS in docked mode if you mess with the settings, all while keeping the game’s superb environmental detail, great lighting and shadows, extremely nice character models, and also keeping the hair looking pretty good too (a common issue in modern Nintendo Switch 2 ports, apparently). Add to this the game’s already-great voice acting and rock-heavy soundtrack, and this looks and sounds like an absolute winner.
What’s more, this is all being sold at a pretty good price, $40, the same price as the Special Edition version on other platforms, and $30 less than the Deluxe Edition. No “Switch Tax” here!
Overall, this is an outstanding port of an outstanding game. If you’re a Nintendo Switch 2 owner who enjoys Action games and you have not yet played this game on another platform, or want a good handheld version, this is a must-have. Do not miss it!
tl;dr – Devil May Cry V on Nintendo Switch 2 is a phenomenal port of a phenomenal Spectacle Fighter, with wonderful, responsive, fluid, stylish combat, with graphics that compromise little compared to the versions on other platforms. If you enjoy Action games and have a Nintendo Switch 2, you should consider this a must-have.
