Review:
Daidassou is an Arcade-style game originally released on the Japan-only PC-8801 computer platform in 1984, with this modern release in 2025 on Nintendo Switch as a part of the EGGCONSOLE series marking the game’s first release in the West.
Daidassou has players taking the role of a soldier infiltrating an enemy Prisoner Of War camp with the goal of freeing his imprisoned comrades. To do so, you’ll need to evade or subdue the guards and break into the cells containing your comrades, then lead them to the exit.
This game has so many problems. The isometric view makes the already-stiff controls even more unwieldy, the AI of your comrades is moronic, the simple visuals make it hard to tell important details like the direction guards are facing and whether they’re in your line of sight, there’s nasty flickering throughout that makes the game even harder to see… and in the end, this game simply is not fun.
Being a part of the EGGCONSOLE series brings with it multiple extra options and features common within that series. This includes save states, a rewind feature, button reassignment, screen settings, adjustable game speed settings, and a virtual keyboard if you need it for any reason. And Daidassou also includes scans of the original game’s Japanese-language instruction manual and box art.
I really appreciate that Daidassou is making available an obscure relic from videogames’ past, and one previously unavailable in the West. Having said that, outside of its value as an odd curio, this game is just not worth playing in the modern day. Unless you’re a collector, skip this one.
tl;dr – Daidassou is an Arcade-style game that has players breaking into an enemy POW camp and rescuing comrades while evading guards. Unfortunately, between the terrible controls, terrible visuals, terrible friendly AI, and lack of anything resembling fun here, I don’t see any reason to get this game outside of its value as an obscure bit of gaming history.
