Review:
Yuureikun is an Arcade-style game that originally released in 1989 on the Japan-only MSX2 computer platform, with this modern release in 2025 on Nintendo Switch as a part of the EGGCONSOLE series marking the game’s first release in the West.
This game has you playing as a ghost trying to find answers to how he died, and has you fighting various Japanese spirits and demons. You do this either by shooting a spirit weapon at them, which is super-slow, super-weak, and cannot be fired again until it boomerangs back… or by using a sideways butt-bash move, that has limited uses and requires you to aim yourself away from your enemy before using it.
Needless to say that both of these methods of combat are highly unsatisfying, and given that this is a combat-heavy game… well, it makes for a pretty bad game.
Being a part of the EGGCONSOLE series brings with it multiple extra options and features common within that series. This includes save states, a rewind feature, button reassignment, screen settings, adjustable game speed settings, and a virtual keyboard if you need it for any reason.
Overall, while Yuureikun is certainly an interesting game, it’s not a good one, and certainly not one that I can see many players enjoying in the modern day. Unless you’re curious about an obscure game from nearly 30 years ago, I don’t recommend buying this.
tl;dr – Yuureikun is an Arcade-style game that has you playing as a ghost attacking enemies with slow-moving spirit energy attacks or awkward butt bashes. Neither method of attack is satisfying, and in a game full of enemies to fight, it makes for a pretty bad game. Unless you take joy in collecting obscure oddities, stay away from this one.
