Review:

Otome Daishi is a Visual Novel released in 2026 on Nintendo Switch. Set in the Chinese-inspired medieval fantasy kingdom of Kayu, where the culture is built around a shared love for “wushu” (martial arts), this game follows a young woman attending a martial arts tournament when it comes under an attack from a mysterious enemy.

As the title indicates, this is an “otome” game, meaning the female protagonist is presented with multiple male love interest characters, with the story splitting based on which of these characters the player chooses to focus on. You have the supportive male friend, the hotheaded childhood friend, the blunt and stoic quiet tough guy, and the polite pretty guy. It’s a bit of an unevenly stacked deck – while the protagonist has at least a little attraction or chemistry with all of the characters, during the opening she spends the most time by far with the supportive male friend whose only obstacle is that the pair see themselves like siblings… even though they both clearly care for each other deeply.

Despite the emphasis on fighting and martial arts in the premise, this game seems pretty light on the action. The prologue takes place at a fighting tournament, yet your character spends most of her time wandering around food and shopping stalls, chatting with her friends, and meeting with people. And when the actual fighting begins, it’s not represented well visually, with the static character art not really depicting characters in fighting poses. The exception to this is in occasional black and white manga-style panels that appear every now and then, which doesn’t really mesh well with the rest of the presentation and seems out-of-place.

The characters and story isn’t very noteworthy either. There’s nothing outright terrible here (well, aside from the annoying cutesy panda mascot character), but there’s also very little here that seems noteworthy. These characters are broad archetypes without a whole lot of personality to them that extends beyond those archetypes.

Barring the lack of action and the odd inclusion of black and white manga panels, the presentation here is mostly pretty good, with some very nice anime-style character artwork backed by a synthesized soundtrack that vague hints of Chinese-ish influences, and with some overall pretty good Japanese-language voice acting for the characters. However, generally speaking, much like the story there’s nothing especially noteworthy or memorable here.

In the end, I think Otome Daishi ends up being a decent but largely disposable “otome”-style Visual Novel game. I suspect fans of this particular type of game will find it enjoyable enough, but also largely forgettable. If all you’re looking for is otome junk food, this will suffice. But if you’re looking for a great story, I think you’re better off looking elsewhere.

tl;dr – Otome Daishi is an “otome”-style Visual Novel set in a Chinese-inspired kingdom with a fixation on martial arts, where players follow the story of a young woman attending a martial arts tournament when the event comes under attack. This game is surprisingly low-action given the martial arts theme, and features a mix of different media types that don’t mesh well. However, for the most part this is an entertaining but largely forgettable entry in the genre.
