Review:

Immortals Fenyx Rising was a pretty blatant Greek- themed copycat of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but if you’re going to copy someone you copy the best, and the result here was a very good game, albeit one that clearly suffered due to the limitations of the Nintendo Switch hardware. Without any sort of official upgrade, does the game get any sort of boost playing on Nintendo Switch 2? Let’s have a look.

Unfortunately, there seems to be little difference in terms of visuals or performance when playing this game on Nintendo Switch 2. Same low resolution, same passable but unimpressive framerates. There might have been a reduction in slowdown, but honestly it’s hard to tell.

The one change I noticed here was to the loading times, and it’s not a dramatic change either. On Nintendo Switch, it took me 35 seconds to load to the main menu, another 22 seconds to load a game save, and 23 seconds to fast travel. On Nintendo Switch 2, those times were reduced to 28 seconds, 13 seconds, and 11 seconds.

While it was impressive that this game looked as good as it did on the underpowered Nintendo Switch, it’s similarly unimpressive on Nintendo Switch 2. If you don’t have any other platform to play it on, it’ll be fine, but if you can play it on another modern platform, that’s going to be the preferable way to go.

tl;dr – Immortals Fenyx Rising is an Open-World Action-RPG that is very clearly taking more than a few pages from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for its Greek myth-themed adventure. And while it never comes close to being a rival for Zelda, it is nevertheless a solid entry in the genre, and one that looked surprisingly good on the Nintendo Switch, but disappointingly isn’t improved much at all on Nintendo Switch 2. Players who fancy a new adventure into a large open world should definitely give this game a look, but if possible I recommend getting it on a non-Nintendo platform.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Review:

Square Enix has been frustratingly inconsistent when it comes to Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Nintendo Switch games. A few of them have gotten a minor patch, a few have gotten Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases, and many of them have gotten completely separate releases with no upgrade path. As dumb luck would have it, one of those games to receive an actual Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade is Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, which can be upgraded from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for $10. What does that upgrade get you? Let’s have a look.

The eShop page for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game lists improved resolution and framerates in this version, bringing the game up to dynamic 1440p in docked mode and dynamic 1080p in handheld mode and increasing the framerates to 60FPS. Both of these changes are instantly noticeable, but it’s the boost to framerates that really makes the difference here, making a much smoother overall experience.

In addition, the eShop page also mentions an improvement to loading times, and this is also true: On Nintendo Switch, it took me 29 seconds to load the game to the title screen, and another 34 seconds to load a game save, while on Nintendo Switch 2 those times were reduced to 13 seconds and 12 seconds, respectively.

This release does also claim to support HD Rumble 2, but… well, I honestly didn’t notice the rumble at all in this game, so I can’t say that makes much of a difference here.

Overall, this upgrade absolutely makes this version an improvement over the Nintendo Switch release… but I would argue it’s not a $10 improvement. Sorry, but a boost to resolution, framerates, and loading times just doesn’t seem like a $10 value, especially when the original game was already decent enough in those areas. I suppose if you own the Nintendo Switch version of this game and have a great fondness for it, you may find it worth your while to enjoy the improved version on Nintendo Switch 2, but I think most players are better off playing one of numerous other better RPGs already on the platform.

tl;dr – Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the second time a remake of this 1992 Turn-Based JRPG has come to Nintendo Switch (and now Nintendo Switch 2), but this remake is far more extensive, giving an overhaul to the graphics and soundtrack, as well as brushing up the localization and making the game more user-friendly. The result is a much better, much more well-rounded game… but one that’s still pretty dated. Fans of the SaGa series will definitely want to give this a look, but I think most players are better off playing other JRPGs.
