Review:

ココロアップリケ/KoKoRo Appliqué, from here on simply referred to as KoKoRo Appliqué, is a Visual Novel released in 2026 on Nintendo Switch. This game follows the story of a spoiled wealthy high school girl named Frill who suffers from nightmares of disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis, who finds herself meeting a boy calling himself The Guardian of Dreams, who pushes Frill to try to recall memories she had forgotten.

At least… that the best I can gather here. KoKoRo Appliqué is presented in both Japanese and English at the same time, but the English is localized extremely poorly, with misspelled words, confusingly using the wrong gender pronoun making it confusing who’s talking, referring to a stuffed animal as a “child” and at times mistakenly making it seem like the stuffed animal is talking, and just in general using incredibly poor grammar that makes it an ordeal to try to parse what’s going on here.

From what I can parse, Frill seems to be a pretty unsympathetic and at times nonsensical protagonist, seeming to be a spoiled brat, and none of the other characters get even remotely fleshed-out in the game’s 20-30 minute play time, in which no choices are made.

Oh, before I forget, this is one of those games that can inexplicably only be played using a touchscreen, making it unplayable in docked mode for no good reason, so right from the start you get a feel for the sort of care that was placed into this game’s creation.

The presentation here uses hand-drawn 2D art of characters with animal ears for some reason, in front of more detailed 2D backgrounds that generally look nice enough. This is backed by a soundtrack which, apart from a Japanese-voiced vocal main theme on the title screen, otherwise absolutely clashes with the rest of the game, seeming like a low-quality MIDI recreation of bombastic jovial circus music that sounds terrible. Even silence or simple environmental noises would have fit this game better. This is joined by Japanese-language voice acting that actually seems decent for what it’s worth.

For a game that costs under $1.50, you probably wouldn’t expect much, but I would hope you could expect more than this. I feel like I could easily write a short story that would carry more emotional weight and gravitas than this, and it would certainly be more readable. So I guess credit to this game for making me feel like maybe I could make a videogame that would be worth a few bucks on the eShop… but only because KoKoRo Appliqué definitely isn’t.

tl;dr – KoKoRo Appliqué is a Visual Novel about a spoiled high school girl who has nightmares about disasters meeting a boy calling himself The Guardian of Dreams. Even for a game under $2 that lasts 20-30 minutes, this is pretty miserable, with extremely poor localization, a terrible soundtrack, and a protagonist who’s extremely unlikeable. Save your $2 and get a better Visual Novel instead of wasting money on this.
