Nintendo has released one additional game for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics app. Let’s have a look!

tl;drWhile many found this game to be a disappointing follow-up to Super Mario 64, it actually holds up pretty well, and even 18 years later the water effects still look nice, even if the character models and textures have aged some. The camera and controls have also improved greatly, although both still suffer from some issues. The addition of the FLUDD water pack results in this game controlling differently from any of the other 3D Mario games, which may take some getting used to. However, overall this is a decent Mario game, albeit not a great one. | |||
While Super Mario Sunshine was technically already playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 via the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, that Compilation was delisted years ago, though you find copies of the game in some places, with prices as of this writing starting around $65 for a used copy. It’s still disappointing that Nintendo chose such a consumer-unfriendly jerkwad move, but at the very least now players who missed out on that collection’s release have another way to play all three games, at least on Nintendo Switch 2.
Super Mario Sunshine is seen by many as a huge disappointment after its absolutely groundbreaking, Earth-shaking predecessor, Super Mario 64. However, I would argue that Sunshine has aged somewhat better, with controls and camera that both work much better, as well as some clever mechanics like its unique and inspired use of GameCube controller’s “click-in” analog triggers (which of course works the same using Nintendo’s Nintendo GameCube Controller). And while I don’t hold Sunshine in the same high esteem as Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Odyssey, Sunshine remains an absolutely solid 3D Platformer.
Super Mario Sunshine has its flaws, but make no mistake – this is an absolutely essential GameCube game, and one that unquestionably needed to be a part of the GameCube app to make it whole. If you enjoy Platformers, this is a must-play.
tl;dr – The Nintendo GameCube app on Nintendo Switch 2 gets Super Mario Sunshine, a game that has aged surprisingly well given how mixed reactions to the game were in its original release. This is an essential part of the GameCube library, and a must-play for any fans of Platformers.
