WARNING: THIS GAME HEAVILY PUSHES MICROTRANSACTIONS
BarBarQ 2, released in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, is a free-to-play online-only multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game where players control one of various cartoonish barbarian-themed characters in a fantasy realm competing to eat the most blue mushrooms, fight the biggest monsters, and/or claim the greatest treasures within a time limit.
The presentation here is both very good and very bad at the same time. On the one hand, the game’s colorful 3D world and cartoonish 3D characters are really appealing… and this game’s terrible unstable framerates and frequent brief screen freezing are extremely frustrating. This is all backed by an upbeat jovial soundtrack that fits the game’s cartoony themes well, but doesn’t make up for the terrible performance issues.
The gameplay has players running around an area, collecting pickups and fighting both computer-controlled enemies and other players with melee attacks as well as pickups found throughout the arena. There are some Roguelike-style elements as you’ll get occasional upgrades, and there are elements of Battle Royale-style games as parts of the map drop away into the ocean and eliminate players still standing on them. However, the type of game this most resembles is MOBA-style games, with players fighting simple enemy “mobs” to power-up until they’re better able to tackle human opponents. This game just lacks the standard “lanes” you find in most MOBA-style games.
Unfortunately, the gameplay here is very simple, and I found it oddly easy to wipe the floor with opponents fairly consistently – just prioritize high-value enemy mobs and boxes, use pickups to damage bigger boss mobs and mess up opposing players, use spacing to avoid enemy attacks and then close in when they’re vulnerable and button-mash your way to defeating them. Easy-peasy.
It’s disappointing that the gameplay here is so shallow, and even more disappointing how little control you have over your character, as they generally auto-aim at whatever enemy they want to, regardless of what you’d prefer they do. Add to this a lack of tutorial and confusing main menu screen layout, and you have a game that screams “designed to be a free-to-play microtransaction-fest”.
Overall, I’m sure some players will enjoy BarBarQ 2, but I found it to be a shallow, repetitive experience with confusing menus and absolutely terrible performance optimization on Nintendo Switch. Even if you’re looking for free-to-play games on Nintendo’s hybrid console, you have numerous better options than this.
tl;dr – BarBarQ 2 is a free-to-play online-only multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game where players battle it out as cartoony barbarians in arenas that blend gameplay elements of Battle Royale, Roguelike, and MOBA-style games. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is extremely shallow, and the performance on Nintendo Switch is terrible. Even in free-to-play games, you have better options than this.
