1000xResist – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Review:

It’s honestly kinda’ surprising to see so many indie games getting Nintendo Switch 2 Editions while major game releases still haven’t gotten the upgrade. However, I’m still happy to see 1000xResist get an upgrade, especially since this is a free upgrade for anyone who owns the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Let’s see what you get with that!

In my review of the Nintendo Switch version of the game, I mentioned nasty aliasing and terrible framerate drops, and looking back at that version now I also see some pop-in. In the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, the pop-in is still present, but the other issues are now gone. This is undoubtedly thanks in part to a bump to 4K resolution in docked mode and 1080p resolution in handheld mode, as well as a stable 30FPS framerate – not impressive, but better than what we saw in the Nintendo Switch release of the game.

In addition, I noticed some added visual effects in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, like extra lighting effects. The game still doesn’t look visually-impressive by any stretch, but it absolutely looks better on Nintendo Switch 2

Finally, there’s the loading times. On Nintendo Switch, it took me 1 minute 1 second to load to the main menu, with the game save loading pretty much instantly after that. On Nintendo Switch 2, the load time to get to the main menu was reduced to 38 seconds – an improvement, but not as massive an improvement as one may hope for.

Overall, as free Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades go, this is a solid one, eliminating the performance issues of the Nintendo Switch version of the game and making for an overall more pleasant-looking game. This game still won’t blow anyone’s socks off visually, but if you’re looking for a thoughtful story, this is still a magnificent game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is definitely an improvement.

tl;dr – 1000xResist is a Graphic Adventure with a story about… well, piecing together what’s going on is a part of the experience, I think. Suffice it to say, this game tackles both massive world-spanning topics and small, intimate topics with writing, characters, and voice acting that’s truly outstanding. The story’s disjointed nature will likely be confusing for some players, and there is also a fair amount of triggering topic matter here. However, those who can tolerate these things will find this game to be an extremely original and highly rewarding experience.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Genre: Top-Down Action-RPG

When it comes to games that I really want to see getting Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases, 2D pixel art games are pretty low on my list. Unless there’s some new feature, I just feel like they don’t usually benefit very much from the added horsepower. I suppose I’m glad that Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo has another chance to garner attention, as it’s a magnificent game, and I certainly won’t complain about getting a free upgrade, but does it really make that much of a difference?

Honestly… not really. The eShop page for this version says it has higher resolution and enhanced framerates, but if that’s the case, I really don’t see it.

The only change I’m seeing here is improved loading times – it took me 42 seconds to load to the title screen on Nintendo Switch, and only 20 seconds on Nintendo Switch 2, with both versions only taking 2 seconds to load up a game save.

It’s not much, as far as Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases go, and even at no cost it’s hard not to wonder why they’d even bother releasing a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition that does so little. But if you already have the game, you might as well upgrade, since it won’t cost you anything.

tl;dr – Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a Top-Down Action-RPG that follows the traditional 2D Zelda formula but with a yo-yo as its central mechanic, with some really creative uses for it that you gain as you progress. This game isn’t without its flaws, but overall this is a fun and unique take on the Action-RPG genre well worth playing.
