First-Person Shooter

GameGenreGrade
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate EditionOpen World Action-RPG / First-Person ShooterA+
tl;dr Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2 is a powerfully-impressive showpiece that looks absolutely amazing on the new handheld, and this Open-World Action-RPG and First-Person Shooter plays wonderfully, has an outstanding story with wonderful well-voiced and well-written characters, and a fascinating world to explore. This game isn’t without its flaws, but overall unless you’ve had your fill of Cyberpunk on other platforms, you should consider this an absolute must-have game on Nintendo Switch 2.
Apex LegendsFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;dr Apex Legends is an online-focused free-to-play battle royale-style First Person Shooter where there’s an emphasis on coordinating with your 2- or 3-person team to survive. This is a game with a steep learning curve, so if you haven’t already played the game elsewhere, you’re likely to get killed extremely quickly. That said, the Nintendo Switch 2 release of this game is an absolutely massive improvement over the Nintendo Switch version, with excellent graphics and performance, albeit at a cost of a massive 78.5GB file size. However, if you’re looking for a solid First-Person Shooter that doesn’t have to be a hit to your wallet, this is an excellent choice.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionOpen-World First-Person Shooter / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;dr Metroid Prime 4 is a First-Person Shooter and Metroidvania with Open-World sections, and it is an audiovisual tour de force on Nintendo Switch 2 that is a showcase for the platform’s capabilities, with a gorgeous world, incredible puzzle design, and some clever gameplay elements. It also disappoints with its underwhelming Metroidvania elements, its half-baked Open World elements, and some truly baffling design choices. The result is a game that, while still outstanding, is a bit underwhelming given the 18 years it took for us to finally see this game release.
Deadzone: RogueFirst-Person Shooter / RoguelikeB
tl;dr Deadzone: Rogue is a First-Person Shooter and Roguelike set on a space station orbiting Earth. The First-Person Shooter half of the game is decent but nothing special, but the game is elevated by its Roguelike elements, which add some enjoyable variety and progression. The result is a game well worth trying out on Nintendo Switch 2.

Third-Person Shooter

GameGenreGrade
FortniteCompilation / Open-World Third-Person ShooterA
tl;dr Fortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is a far superior way to play it compared to the original Nintendo Switch.
Full Metal SchoolgirlThird-Person Shooter / Action / RoguelikeC
tl;dr Full Metal Schoolgirl is an Action game with Third-Person Shooter gameplay and Roguelike elements where players take the role of robotic schoolgirls fighting through hordes of robotic enemies in a bad satire of toxic work culture. Everything here is mediocre – mediocre Action gameplay, repetitive environments and enemies, lackluster Roguelike elements, and unimpressive graphics and performance. You can still find some fun here, but you have countless better options.

.

Flight Sim / Combat Flight Sim

GameGenreGrade
Star FoxOn-Rails ShooterA+
tl;drStar Fox is a faithful family-friendly remake of Star Fox 64 that gets pretty much everything right. It preserves the excellent gameplay of the original game while giving it an absolutely stunning makeover, adding in a bunch of new features, expanding on the original game’s story, revamping the multiplayer mode, and overall setting a standard for others to look to when anyone wants to see how to do a truly phenomenal remake of an absolute classic. This is a must-have game, and a showpiece for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Arcade Archives 2 Air Combat 22Combat Flight SimulatorC
tl;drAir Combat 22 is a Combat Flight Simulation game that’s decent but somewhat repetitive, and at $15 for a game that’s 30 years old it seems horribly overpriced. Fans of the genre still may find this worth checking out, but I expect most players will find it’s not worth the expense.

.

Action Brawler (Musou)

GameGenreGrade
Hyrule Warriors: Age of ImprisonmentAction BrawlerA
tl;dr Hyrule Warriors: Age of imprisonment is a “Musou”-style Action Brawler that expands on Zelda’s story from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This game is an outstanding blend of Musou gameplay and Tears of the Kingdom’s characters, world, story, and game mechanics, and the Nintendo Switch 2’s improved hardware ensures that this time there aren’t any performance issues. While the combat can occasionally be repetitive and it feels like this could have gone even farther with its use of Tears of the Kingdom’s game mechanics, this is overall a fantastic game with great action, an excellent story, and outstanding co-op play. Do not miss it.
Dynasty Warriors: OriginsAction BrawlerB-
tl;dr Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an Action Brawler “Musou”-style game that focuses on telling a story loosely based on the first half of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with a greater focus on character-driven story than we’ve seen in earlier games in the series, with combat that more heavily emphasizes blocking, dodging, and parrying. In part due to these changes, this game won’t appeal to everyone, but overall I think it’s a solid entry in the series.

Action (General)

GameGenreGrade
Hades II – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionAction / RoguelikeA
tl;dr Hades II is an excellent follow-up to its predecessor, a fine Action Roguelike with an absolute ton of content, and that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while changing things enough that this feels like a very different sort of game while still fitting in with the original. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game is a free upgrade if you own the Nintendo Switch version, and the improvements to graphics and performance are absolutely noticeable. If you’re looking to play a truly excellent Action game on the go, this is well worth picking up.
Split Fiction3D Platformer / ActionA
tl;drSplit Fiction is a 2-player Co-Op-exclusive 3D Platformer and Action game from the folks who made It Takes Two, and this game takes that formula and turns it up a notch with one great action set piece after another, and with an excellent story about two aspiring authors trapped in a simulation together playing out each of their works. This game gives players just about every possible way to play together, and it’s well-worth doing so – this is an outstanding game that you should absolutely play so long as you have someone to play it with.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate – Nintendo Switch 2 EditionAction / RoguelikeA-
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is an Action Roguelike similar to the Hades series that has players taking the role of one of the four titular Ninja Turtles and fighting through enemies with various random upgrades in each run. While this game doesn’t top Hades, it’s a solid take on that formula with great 4-player co-op that makes this an excellent entry in the genre and a must-have for fans of the Ninja Turtles franchise, with Nintendo Switch 2 bringing better graphics, better performance, and even more multiplayer options.
WarframeThird-Person ActionB+
tl;dr Warframe is a Free-To-Play Third-Person Action game that actually does the “Free-To-Play” part right, and provides a good multiplayer online experience for up to four players, albeit one that’s disorienting for newcomers. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game is a massive improvement over the release on Nintendo Switch, with improved graphics and performance. This is a great way to play a solid game!
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the GoddessAction / Strategy / Tower DefenseB
tl;drKunitsu-Gami is a game that combines Third-Person Action, Strategy, and Tower Defense in a setting inspired by Japanese mythology that has players taking the role of a warrior accompanying a shrine maiden seeking to rally villagers to fight off malicious spirits and seal them away. While all of these individual elements have areas where they’re lacking, together they form something unique and well worth trying out if the individual parts of this game appeal to you.
