Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch that I feel are good games for younger players or more casual players, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same grade, they will be sorted alphabetically.
| Game | Genre | Grade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Kart Racer | A++ | |
tl;drMario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just a Kart Racing game, it is the Kart Racing game, removing the few flaws the Wii U version had and adding even more content to an already content-rich game, making this arguably the best-playing, best-looking and all-around best period when it comes to this type of racing game. If you have a Switch, get this game. | |||
| Super Mario Odyssey | 3D Platformer | A++ | |
tl;drSuper Mario Odyssey is Mario’s long-awaited return to 3D platforming, and it’s just about everything fans of the series could want. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it has damn near perfected it, filling the game with new surprises around every corner. It is an absolute must-have game on the Nintendo Switch | |||
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Management Sim | A+ | |
tl;drAnimal Crossing: New Horizons is a light-hearted, family-friendly, casual Management Sim where the time and date in the game is the same as in real life, and where players perform small tasks and customize their home and their village. This entry is a huge step forward for the series, adding many new mechanics and gameplay systems that greatly improve the game’s customization elements while giving added quality of life enhancements as well. There constantly seems like something new and fun to do, with new surprises seemingly every day. Unless you have a problem with more relaxed, slower-paced games, you should consider this game a must-have. | |||
| Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze | Platformer | A+ | |
tl;drDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is about as good as 2D platformers can get – it plays well, it looks great, and the level design is some of the best that’s ever been seen in a videogame. This is a game that should be in every Switch owner’s collection. | |||
| Kirby and the Forgotten Land | 3D Platformer | A+ | |
tl;drKirby and the Forgotten Land is a family-friendly 3D Platformer that marks Kirby’s first fully-fledged 3D adventure, and it is an outstanding game that is one of the best titles in the Kirby franchise. While I have a few complaints about choppy background animations and a relatively easy difficulty level, overall this game is an absolute blast to play, full of personality and originality, all while drawing inspiration from some of the best Mario and Donkey Kong games, as well as Kirby’s own 2D adventures. If you enjoy Platformers, you should absolutely get this game. | |||
| Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | A+ | |
tl;drMario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is a family-friendly Turn-Based Strategy-RPG that improves on its predecessor Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle in virtually every way. Players have plenty of ways to adapt and change their party, the combat is delightfully deep but also wonderfully accessible, the game is bursting with personality, has a killer soundtrack, a great sense of humor, and plenty of content to explore. This just about everything you could hope for in a sequel, and then some. | |||
| Alekon | First-Person Shooter / Misc. | A | |
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre. | |||
| Deemo | Music-Rhythm | A | |
tl;drDeemo is a wonderful Music-Rhythm game with gameplay that recreates in abstract the feeling of playing a piano. It has a huge selection of music, a good number of options, and some absolutely gorgeous artwork, although the gameplay itself is unfortunately visually bland. While you can play Deemo fine in docked mode, this is a game that’s really designed for handheld play, which may limit its appeal. But if you enjoy Music-Rhythm games, this game is a must-have. | |||
| Dragon Quest Builders 2 | Action-RPG / Open-World Sandbox | A | |
tl;drDragon Quest Builders 2 is an Action-RPG with an open world and creation elements to it that are very comparable to Minecraft, and an anime style and story that are very much a Dragon Quest thing. That said, this game is much more linear and focused than Minecraft, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Regardless, it is an absolutely superb Action-RPG, and an absolutely superb Open-World game, and fans of either type of game should consider this a must-have. | |||
| It Takes Two | 3D Platformer | A | |
tl;drIt Takes Two is a 3D Platformer with a co-op focus that requires two players to play. This game’s asymmetrical co-op gameplay is phenomenal, with great level design, puzzle design, and boss design. The story is pretty delightful too, with fun characters and great voice acting, along with some wonderful sound design. If you have a friend to play with, this is an absolute must-have co-op game. | |||
| LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer / Third-Person Shooter | A | |
tl;drLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this game revisiting all nine numbered Star Wars films with entirely new gameplay. This is the LEGO game that gets everything right – the new Third-Person Shooter gameplay helps to bring players closer to the action, the comedy is as great as it’s ever been, the presentation is gorgeous, and the world provides lots of interesting places to explore. This is not just a great LEGO game, it’s a great Star Wars game, and just a great game overall. If you only ever play one Traveller’s Tales LEGO game, this is the one to play. | |||
| Luigi’s Mansion 3 | Puzzle / Action | A | |
tl;drLuigi’s Mansion 3 is an absolutely gorgeous family-friendly game about Mario’s cowardly brother once again having to save the day by using a vacuum to suck up ghosts in a haunted mansion er, hotel. This game has a stunning presentation, that makes it one of the best-looking games on the Nintendo Switch, as well as excellent gameplay that combines Puzzle and Action elements with exploration in a way that’s truly unique. There are a few areas that could do with improvement, but overall this is absolutely a top-tier game on the Nintendo Switch that everyone who owns the console should consider getting. | |||
| New Pokemon Snap | First-Person On-Rails Shooter / Misc. | A | |
tl;drNew Pokemon Snap is just about everything fans could want from a sequel to the N64 classic, and improves on the original in numerous ways while still remaining faithful to its formula. This is a beautiful family-friendly On-Rails First-Person Shooter that has you snapping photos of Pokemon, testing your skill with the lens and your ingenuity with other tools at your disposal to capture the best pictures. Its lack of exploration and laid-back nature may not be for everyone, and there are areas where it could still be improved further, but overall this is a marvelous experience that every Pokemon fan will likely want to have. | |||
| Minecraft | Open-World Action-RPG/Misc. | A | |
tl;drMinecraft is a family-friendly Open-World sandbox game with Action-RPG elements that has you deconstructing and rebuilding the world at your whim, with endless possibilities for those looking to create or explore. The Nintendo Switch version is not the ideal version of the game, and this version also still bears the bugs that every version of the game seems to have, but it is still a must-play game that’s absolutely worth playing despite this. | |||
| Overcooked Special Edition | Arcade / Party | A | |
tl;drOvercooked is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. It’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch. | |||
| Overcooked! 2 | Arcade / Party | A | |
tl;drOvercooked 2, like the first game, is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. And like the first game, it’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch, with subtle improvements throughout that give it a slight edge over the original. | |||
| Overcooked! All You Can Eat | Compilation / Arcade / Party Game | A | |
tl;drOvercooked! All You Can Eat is a Compilation containing enhanced versions of the first two Overcooked games, both family-friendly Arcade-style Party Games with a strong focus on co-op play. While I don’t think the Overcooked games have quite managed to maintain their legendary status as the years have passed, these are still two of the best co-op games ever made, and this package adds multiple features, enhancements, and new content to ensure that this is the definitive version of both games, all at a very reasonable price. I wouldn’t recommend this for players who already own both Overcooked games, but for anyone else who enjoys co-op gameplay, this is absolutely worth getting. | |||
| Pikmin 3 Deluxe | Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | A | |
tl;drPikmin 3 Deluxe is an outstanding and unique spin on the Real-Time Strategy genre that puts the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat, and this version of the game adds a slew of new features, including multiple good control options, and more extensive co-op play that I would argue is the absolute highlight of the game. Unless you played the original version of this game on Wii U and have zero interest in the new co-op play, consider this a game that you absolutely should not miss. | |||
| Pikmin 4 | Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | A | |
tl;drPikmin 4 is the long-awaited (10 years!) fourth mainline entry in Nintendo’s unique series of Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG hybrid games that have you controlling an insect-sized space explorer commanding an army of ant-plant creatures. This sequel massively improves on prior entries in the series in numerous areas that both open up the game and make it more accessible, and it is visually-gorgeous as well. It’s just a shame that a few of the changes here add in some unfortunate flaws as well, and the lack of a full campaign co-op mode is a disappointing step backwards in a game that is otherwise all massive steps forward for the series. While it falls just short of Pikmin perfection, this is nevertheless an outstanding game, and one I highly recommend to all Nintendo Switch owners. | |||
| Rocket League | Racing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.) | A | |
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Stardew Valley | Top-Down Action-RPG / Management Sim | A | |
tl;drStardew Valley is a “Farming RPG” much like Harvest Moon, but there’s a huge wealth of stuff to do here, with a charming presentation, a constant stream of new things to change up the experience, and even a wonderful online co-op mode. If you want a fun, mellow experience on the Switch, consider this game a must-have. | |||
| Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | Compilation / 3D Platformer / Open-World | A | |
tl;drSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers – an upscaled and much-improved port of Super Mario 3D World, and the all-new Open-World game Bowser’s Fury. On their own, each wouldn’t hold a candle to Mario’s best adventures – 3D World isn’t nearly as ambitious as Odyssey or Galaxy, and Bowser’s Fury is too short. However, combined they come very close to that same level of quality, and the resulting package is a must-have for Mario fans. | |||
| Super Mario Maker 2 | Platformer | A | |
tl;drSuper Mario Maker 2, like its predecessor, is a Mario level creator that’s a creative gamer’s dream, and those who aren’t creative will have a huge wealth of content to enjoy. Even a half a year later the online play is still terrible, and it feels like for every two improvements this game makes it loses one feature from the first game, but overall this is still an excellent game every Mario fan should get. | |||
| Super Mario RPG | Isometric Turn-Based JRPG | A | |
tl;drSuper Mario RPG is a remake of the 1996 classic SNES Isometric Turn-Based JRPG that’s extremely faithful to the original while adding completely modernized graphics and music, as well as new gameplay features. This is a great remake of a great game, and while it’s somewhat short and easy for a JRPG, it is so enjoyable throughout its 12-20 hour adventure that any fan of the genre should consider it a must-have, and players wanting to try their first RPG should consider this an excellent entry point. Either way, this game is outstanding. | |||
| Tents and Trees | Picross-style Puzzle | A | |
tl;drTents and Trees is a type of family-friendly Puzzle that’s somewhat similar to Picross, albeit with slightly different rules. While this iteration of Tents and Trees doesn’t do anything that’s particularly revolutionary, every single part of this game is polished and high in quality, from the great gameplay, good amount of content, and excellent features, to the classy visuals and wonderfully relaxing soundtrack. If you’re looking for a wonderful Puzzle game to chill with, this is an absolutely ideal choice. | |||
| Voez | Music-Rhythm | A | |
tl;drVoez is an absolutely joyous Music-Rhythm game, withe fun and simple gameplay, and a wide variety of music. While you can play it fine in docked mode, this is a game that’s really designed for handheld play, which may limit its appeal, but if you enjoy Music-Rhythm games, you owe it to yourself to try this one. | |||
| Yoku’s Island Express | Metroidvania / Pinball | A | |
tl;drYoku’s Island Express is a Metroidvania Pinball game that puts you in the role of a cartoony dung beetle lugging around a big round rock as he delivers mail across a huge and complex island set up like a gigantic pinball machine. It’s an odd combination of elements that works amazingly well, heightened by a beautiful presentation and an overall joyful experience throughout. Definitely give this game a look. | |||
| Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair | Platformer | A | |
tl;drYooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a family-friendly 2D Platformer in the style of the Donkey Kong Country games. While it never quite reaches the excellence of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, it is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, with amazing graphics and sound, and solid gameplay. It even adds a few original ideas of its own, such as a wonderful overworld area with lots of puzzles and exploration, and alternate versions of every level that provide a completely different experience. While it’s not without its faults, it is still one of the best Platforming experiences on the Switch, and well worth playing. | |||
| Yoshi’s Crafted World | Platformer | A | |
tl;drYoshi’s Crafted World is a family-friendly Platformer that takes the series’ gameplay into a world made of cardboard and other crafting materials, making the entire game look like you’re playing through a child’s diorama. The game really explores this idea well, using it for all sorts of interesting surprises and twists on the gameplay, with some good co-op play and a low challenge level making it ideal for youngsters while still giving more seasoned players challenges to pursue. It’s not perfect, but even so it’s the best game in the Yoshi series since Yoshi’s Island, and a must-have for fans of Platformers. | |||
| A Short Hike | Open-World Action-RPG | A- | |
tl;drA Short Hike is a family-friendly Open-World Action-RPG, albeit one without enemies, dungeons, hit points, or a significant level of challenge, and one that’s smaller than most open worlds. Still, despite this, and despite how short the game is, it is an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Superb writing, a beautiful soundtrack, a memorable visual art style, and wonderful exploration-focused gameplay all make this a hike that, while short, is one well worth taking. | |||
| Assault Android Cactus+ | 2-Stick Shooter | A- | |
tl;drAssault Android Cactus is a 2-Stick Shooter that has some fun, unique mechanics and a lot of great, intense action. It’s a blast to play in co-op, and the Switch version is the definitive version of the game. I only wish the sub-weapon dodge-swapping mechanic was better-utilized, and the levels looked more distinct. But those are minor complaints about what is a fantastic game on the Switch. | |||
| Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling | Turn-Based RPG | A- | |
tl;drBug Fables is a family-friendly Turn-Based RPG made in the style of the first two Paper Mario games, featuring similar gameplay and presentation. The RPG elements here are solid, and the game’s story is wonderful, with some truly memorable characters. However, I feel like the desire to make this game like Paper Mario kept it from striking out on its own, with elements like platforming that simply aren’t very good. This is still a superb RPG, though. | |||
| Captain Toad Treasure Tracker | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drCaptain Toad Treasure Tracker is a game where players guide the titular non-jumping character through numerous levels that are each like little puzzle boxes. The puzzles are clever, and the presentation is solid, and this is overall a fantastic puzzle game, although it’s not without a few annoyances. | |||
| Chicory: A Colorful Tale | Top-Down Action-RPG | A- | |
tl;drChicory is a family-friendly Top-Down Action-RPG in the style of old-school Zelda games, albeit with more of a focus on puzzles, exploration, and characters than on combat. Chicory is absolutely charming and full of personality, with a delightful presentation, a lovely soundtrack, and some creative gameplay elements. The Nintendo Switch version even has some outstanding optional gyroscopic motion controls (though it’s a tradeoff that also comes with some nasty slowdown at times). There are some gameplay elements here that don’t quite mesh together well, but overall this is an outstanding game that should be considered a Must-Play for anyone who would enjoy a relaxed adventure. | |||
| Dicey Dungeons | Roguelike / Board Game | A- | |
tl;drDicey Dungeons is a family-friendly Roguelike with Board Game elements that plays like a cross between Slay the Spire and Yahtzee. While perhaps not as deep as the former, Dicey Dungeons makes up for it by being highly accessible and easy to play, while still having a fair amount of depth. If you enjoy both genres this game is derived from, you’ll definitely want to give it a look. | |||
| Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition | Turn-Based JRPG | A- | |
tl;drDragon Quest XI S is a graphical wonder on the Nintendo Switch, with calculated cuts to the graphics in the port from the PS4 have done little to reduce its jaw-dropping visual presentation, and the additions to the content are an embarrassment of riches. Unfortunately, the JRPG gameplay remains firmly-rooted in the past, and really feels long in the tooth. This game is still a must-play for JRPG fans, but don’t expect gameplay on par with the graphics. | |||
| Fae Farm | Action-RPG / Management Simulation | A- | |
tl;drFae Farm is a family-friendly “Farming RPG”-style Action-RPG and Management Sim that has players travelling to a magical island surrounded by whirlpools where they will find a pleasant community waiting for them… and of course a vacant farm too. Apart from the “magical” themes, this game doesn’t really do anything particularly new or transformative for the genre. Rather, it takes the standard gameplay of the genre and does that very well, with a wonderful polished presentation. It’s not anything truly groundbreaking, but it is still one of the best games I’ve played in this genre. | |||
| Farm Together | Management Sim | A- | |
tl;drFarm Together is a Farm Management Sim that has a lot of the trappings of a microtransaction-filled game, but without the microtransactions. Instead, you’ll find it to have nice, relaxing gameplay that puts the focus on playing the game a little bit at a time and gradually watching your farm grow over time. If you’re cool with that sort of thing, this game could surprise you with how enjoyable it is. | |||
| Flipon | Match-3 Puzzle | A- | |
tl;drFlipon is a Match-3 Puzzle game that directly copies the formula of Panel De Pon, and does so extraordinarily well, not only retaining the quality combo-heavy game mechanics of the original, but adding new features like special abilities and 4-player competitive play. It’s only real flaws are a lackluster presentation and a lack of online play. Still, for $6 this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that’s well worth adding to your collection. | |||
| Forgotton Anne | Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drForgotton Anne is a puzzle-platformer with a wonderful, unique story and a fantastic presentation that seems like it’s right out of a Studio Ghibli film. The puzzle design isn’t especially challenging, but you’ll want to play through the game to experience more of its story. | |||
| Islanders | Management Sim / Puzzle | A- | |
tl;drIslanders is a family-friendly Management Sim-style game with Puzzle elements that has players placing buildings on procedurally-generated islands. This is a game that boils down the Management Sim genre to an elegant simplicity that makes for a truly compelling experience, and one that is absolutely worth the tiny $5 price tag, even if it could stand to have a little more depth. | |||
| Katamari Damacy Reroll | Arcade | A- | |
tl;drKatamari Damacy Reroll takes the excellent and crazy-inventive PS2 game about rolling up objects into a giant ball, and brings it into the modern day with HD resolution, higher framerates, and not much else. Still, as the best version of a fantastic game, it’s well worth getting. | |||
| Kirby Star Allies | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drKirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the Kirby series that largely stays true to the series’ roots, with the main difference being the new “ally” mechanic that has you making helper characters. It’s an audiovisual treat, and an absolute must-have game for those looking for a great kid-friendly co-op experience on the Switch. However, more skilled players looking for a challenge aren’t likely to find it here. | |||
| Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drKirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a re-release of a family-friendly Platformer that was originally released on the Wii. Multiple elements have been remade or expanded on here, including redone visuals, expanded features, and a really enjoyable new “Magolor Epilogue”. This combines with the original game’s excellent gameplay and great multiplayer to make for a truly excellent game. Unfortunately, the added content here doesn’t quite seem to justify the $60 price tag for a game that’s over a decade old, but if you’re a Platformer fan who never played the original, consider this a must-have. | |||
| LEGO City Undercover | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drLEGO City Undercover on Nintendo Switch is an excellent upgrade to what was previously a Wii U exclusive title, one of the best games in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO 3D Action-Platformers, and an excellent Open-World game. This police spoof is a joy to play, and while it definitely still has areas that need improvement, LEGO fans should consider this a must-play, and those looking for a good Open-World game on Nintendo Switch would do well to give this some consideration. | |||
| Lil Gator Game | Open-World Action-RPG / 3D Platformer | A- | |
tl;drLil Gator Game is a family-friendly game that combines Open-World Action-Adventure and 3D Platformer elements, with gameplay that feels like a very kid-friendly take on the sort of gameplay we saw in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While nowhere near as deep or rewarding as that game, Lil Gator Game is absolutely full to bursting with adorable, endearing, charming personality as players take on the role of a young anthropomorphic alligator trying to rally their friends to join them in their make-believe game that casts them as the epic hero. While not without its flaws (particularly, repetitive scenery and no map), this is still a wonderful entry in the genre well worth playing. | |||
| Lost in Play | Graphic Adventure | A- | |
tl;drLost in Play is an absolutely charming family-friendly Graphic Adventure where players take the role of two children playing both in the real world and in their make-believe imaginary world. The presentation is adorable, the characters are wonderfully lovable, the puzzles are clever, and the gameplay is highly accessible. There are maybe a few small complaints here and there, but overall this is an outstanding entry in the genre that’s sure to bring a smile to your face. | |||
| Melatonin | Music-Rhythm | A- | |
tl;drMelatonin is a family-friendly Music-Rhythm game that takes the basic gameplay idea of Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven series and adapts it to this game’s dream-inspired levels with a wonderful pastel presentation and bizarre dream logic. Not only does this game feature great gameplay comparable to its inspiration, it actually builds on it with clever ways to shake up that gameplay. I do have a few minor complaints, but overall I think this is a must-have game for Music-Rhythm fans. | |||
| Mini Metro | Puzzle / Simulation | A- | |
tl;drMini Metro is a superb puzzle/sim game that has you drawing the map for a subway/light rail as more stops and more passengers demand to be delivered swiftly to their destination. Add in a clean, simple graphical interface perfectly suited for the game, and a soothing soundtrack, and you have a real winner here. The only thing that’s keeping this from puzzle perfection is a lack of options and stiff controls. | |||
| Mutant Mudds Collection | Compilation / Platformer / Falling Block Puzzle | A- | |
tl;drMutant Mudds Collection is a compilation of the two Mutant Mudds Platformer games and a new Puzzle game, with all three being good entries in their respective genres, and the collection overall being a fantastic value. | |||
| Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door | Turn-Based JRPG | A- | |
tl;drPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a full remake of the classic family-friendly GameCube Turn-Based JRPG, one that series fans swear is still the best in the series, and they have a point – despite a slow start, this game is excellent, with some compelling but straightforward gameplay mechanics, likable characters, and a great story. What’s more, this release features a gorgeous graphical upgrade, a remade soundtrack, and some excellent minor quality-of-life gameplay additions. Overall, that makes this a must-play for RPG fans, and especially for fans of Mario RPGs. | |||
| Pokemon Legends Arceus | Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | |
tl;drPokemon Legends Arceus is a game that takes the Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG gameplay of Nintendo’s long-running Pokemon series and brings it into large, open areas (though not quite Open-World). The change in world design and gameplay here is significant, making this game not only highly enjoyable, but also truly unique in the series. However, this game is also deeply flawed and feels outright rushed – it is lacking a ton of gameplay features, there are multiple poorly-conceived gameplay elements, and the graphics have some major issues. It still manages to be a delight to play despite these issues, but these flaws keep this game from being the absolute triumph it could have been if it got more polish. | |||
| Pokemon Scarlet | Open-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | |
tl;drPokemon Scarlet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Violet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. Unfortunately, all of these great qualities are marred by some nasty graphical and performance issues, as well as some gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, but it’s a great game that is damaged severely by its significant flaws. | |||
| Pokemon Violet | Open-World Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | |
tl;drPokemon Violet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Scarlet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. Unfortunately, all of these great qualities are marred by some nasty graphical and performance issues, as well as some gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, but it’s a great game that is damaged severely by its significant flaws. | |||
| Promenade | Platformer / Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drPromenade is a Platformer with Puzzle-Platformer elements that takes the goal-oriented level design of some 3D Platformers and brings it into a 2D game with plenty of creativity and a solid presentation. This game is absolutely one that Platformer fans should play. | |||
| Quilts and Cats of Calico | Board Game | A- | |
tl;drQuilts and Cats of Calico is a family-friendly videogame adaptation of the Board Game Calico, and it takes a game with wonderful “easy to learn, tough to master” gameplay and translates it exceptionally well to videogame form, with a good selection of game modes and an outstanding presentation with a lovely soundtrack. If you enjoy Board Games or Puzzles and particularly like “cozy games”, consider this a must-have. | |||
| Ring Fit Adventure | Sports (Exercise) / Action-RPG | A- | |
tl;drRing Fit Adventure is an Exercise game with light Action-RPG elements that has you plugging a pair of Joy-Cons into the included Ring-Con and leg strap accessories to use the motion-sensing abilities of the controllers to workout in various ways to assist on your adventure. The motion control here works surprisingly well, and the presentation is very good (annoying character voices aside), plus there’s a good selection of minigames here that are extremely creative and fun. I feel the game’s designers could have gone even farther to add game elements into the exercise bits, but overall this is a one of the best exercise games ever made, and well worth getting if you can find it at a reasonable price. | |||
| Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog remains a classic platformer, and this release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. | |||
| Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog 2 is a classic Platformer originally released on the Sega Genesis, and it has aged pretty well. This release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. This is one of the highlights of the series, and well worth grabbing for any fan of Platformers. | |||
| Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse | Metroidvania | A- | |
tl;drShantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a Metroidvania with some of the best-animated pixel art you’re likely to find in a videogame, and the gameplay is top-notch as well, even if it’s not doing anything especially new or novel. If you’re a fan of the genre, consider this game a must-have. | |||
| Shantae: Half-Genie Hero | Action-Platformer / Metroidvania | A- | |
tl;drShantae: Half-Genie Hero is an Action-Platformer with Metroidvania elements that takes the series’ already-amazing presentation to new levels with gorgeous, exquisitely-animated hand-drawn visuals. And while some players may not be thrilled with this game dialing back the series’ Metroidvania elements, the gameplay here is still plenty of fun and well worth playing for fans of 2D Platforming action. | |||
| Sonic Mania | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSonic Mania is a Platformer that mixes classic throwback levels with newer, remixed stage design to create something unique and refreshing that stands as the best the series has ever been. It may not top Mario in my book, but it’s a must-have game regardless. | |||
| Spyro Reignited Trilogy | Compilation / 3D Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSpyro Reignited Trilogy is a collection of the original three PlayStation Spyro games, family-friendly 3D Platformers that have withstood the test of time and are presented here with absolutely gorgeous graphics. While there are a few elements that haven’t aged well, like the camera, on the whole this is an absolute joy that fans of platformers should consider a must-have. | |||
| Spyro + Crash Remastered Game Bundle | Compilation / 3D Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSpyro + Crash Remastered Game Bundle is a Compilation containing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, with both of those games being full remakes and compilations of three classic family-friendly PlayStation 3D Platformers. All of the games included here are great, and buying them together shaves a bit off of the price you’d pay separately (even more if you catch a good sale). Platformer fans should absolutely consider getting this bundle, unless they already own one of these games. | |||
| Star Wars Pinball | Compilation / Pinball | A- | |
tl;drStar Wars Pinball is a collection of various digital Pinball tables Zen Pinball has released over the last decade, collected together and joined into a cohesive whole. The amount of value here for the $30 price tag is phenomenal, with some really excellent table designs, great gameplay, a fantastic presentation, and plenty of options and extra content. While there are a few tweaks that could still be made to improve the experience even more, overall this is one of the greatest Pinball games ever made, and if you enjoy Pinball and have a Switch, you need to have this game. | |||
| Super Mario 3D All-Stars | Compilation / 3D Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSuper Mario 3D All-Stars is a compilation of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, all with improved resolution and full game soundtracks, and not much else. These games are legends, although of the three only Galaxy remains every bit as good as that legend. However, given the games’ age, the lack of enhancements, the lack of extra content, the high $60 price tag and the outrageous promise to yank the game from stores in a half a year, this otherwise must-have collection seems a lot less enticing than it should. It’s still a trio well worth owning for any fan of Platformers, but it’s one that’s hard for me to enthusiastically recommend. | |||
| Super Mario Bros. Wonder | Platformer | A- | |
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. Wonder is a family-friendly Platformer that brings Mario back to 2D with brand new “wonder effects” that transform every level in the game in creative, inventive ways that infuse this game with tons of variety and personality. What’s more, this game has plenty of new multiplayer features and accessibility options to make this game ideal for younger and less-experienced players. This game is far more inspired than the New Super Mario Bros. games that preceded it… just don’t expect something as incredible as the classic games of Mario’s 8-bit and 16-bit eras or you’ll be disappointed. However, while this game doesn’t reach the same heights as Mario’s classic adventures, it is nevertheless a truly excellent Platformer that any fan of the genre should absolutely play. | |||
| Super Mario Party Jamboree | Party Game / Minigame Collection | A- | |
tl;drSuper Mario Party Jamboree is, in my opinion, the absolute best that the Mario Party series of family-friendly Party Game and Minigame Collection titles has ever had to offer. This game has an absolute wealth of varied content, gives players the option to cut down on the series’ infamous randomness, and has some delightfully inspired game modes, including some excellent online-focused multiplayer play. Apart from underwhelming single-player (never this series’ focus), there’s little to complain about here, and so very much to love. Going forward, I believe this will be the Mario Party game all future titles in the series will be measured against. | |||
| Super Mega Baseball 3 | Sports (Baseball) | A- | |
tl;drSuper Mega Baseball 3 improves on the previous game with a new franchise mode, customizable pennant races, various small gameplay improvements, and perhaps the best new feature: online cross-play, all while keeping the original game’s excellent deep but accessible family-friendly gameplay. If you’re looking for a baseball game on the Nintendo Switch, this is the one you want… just so long as you don’t mind the cartoony characters and lack of officially-licensed teams and players. | |||
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge | Arcade Brawler | A- | |
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an Arcade Brawler that seeks to recapture the magic of the classic Ninja Turtles arcade games, and I don’t think it quite succeeds at that… but that’s okay because it’s a truly phenomenal entry in the genre in its own right, and one loaded with charm, great gameplay, and tons of wonderful little references to the Ninja Turtles franchise that are sure to please series fans and Arcade Brawler fans alike. If that describes you, you should definitely get ahold of this game. | |||
| Tetris Effect: Connected | Falling Block Puzzle | A- | |
tl;drTetris Effect: Connected is a version of the classic family-friendly Falling-Block Puzzle Game that gives the game an amazing audiovisual presentation with a fantastic soundtrack and beautiful visuals, a wealth of single-player and multiplayer game modes, and online multiplayer gameplay with cross-play and excellent matchmaking. It’s missing features I’d want to see and it has a few other minor issues, but overall this is quite possibly the best version of Tetris ever made. If you like Puzzle games, you need to own this game. | |||
| Theatrhythm Final Bar Line | Music-Rhythm | A- | |
tl;drTheatrhythm Final Bar Line is the latest game in Square Enix’s self-celebratory family-friendly Music-Rhythm series, and it outdoes itself with an absolutely enormous list of great songs from throughout its history, with excellent gameplay that’s pretty accessible (though it sadly doesn’t have touchscreen support). The RPG elements here still seem unnecessary and superfluous, and there are a few other minor complaints, but overall this game should be considered an absolute must-have for Music-Rhythm fans. | |||
| Tinykin | 3D Platformer | A- | |
tl;drTinykin is a family-friendly 3D Platformer where players control a tiny space explorer controlling a horde of insect creatures to explore a planet that’s clearly Earth from an insect’s point of view. However, despite the similarities to the Pikmin franchise, Tinykin stands on its own, offering excellent 3D Platformer gameplay with a wonderful world to explore and tons of secrets to find. There are a few areas where this game could be improved, but even so this is a must-play game for anyone who enjoys this genre. | |||
| Toki Tori 2+: Nintendo Switch Edition | Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drToki Tori 2 is a Puzzle-Platformer that plays very differently from the first game, with players limited to only two basic abilities, and progressing through the game by learning how the various parts of the environment react to those abilities and each other. It’s a refreshing and streamlined approach that suits the game very well, making it a unique experience that’s bolstered by an excellent presentation, with some extremely clever puzzle design. | |||
| Toodee and Topdee | Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drToodee and Topdee is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has players swapping between two characters – one who controls like a Platformer, and one who controls like a Top-Down character-driven Puzzle Game character. This game’s fantastic level design makes wonderful use of the game’s central gameplay mechanic, and supplements it with a nice presentation and adorable characters. There are a few places where this game could have been improved, but overall this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that fans of the genre should definitely play. | |||
| Ultimate Chicken Horse | Platformer / Party Game | A- | |
tl;drUltimate Chicken Horse is a family-friendly Platformer with a robust creation tool set and a focus on multiplayer gameplay that challenges players to create levels that they can beat but the other players can’t. It’s a tremendously good time, and while the presentation and core gameplay aren’t on par with Super Mario Maker 2, the multiplayer in this game is clearly superior, making this a fantastic party game. If you’re looking for a good supplement Mario Maker or a fun game to bring out at a party, Ultimate Chicken Horse is a must-have. | |||
| Unravel Two | Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drUnravel Two is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing as a pair of small yarn-creatures as they use their yarn to help each other get past various obstacles in a real world environment. The presentation, while not on par with other versions, is still fantastic, and the puzzles are superb, whether you’re playing solo or in co-op. The only thing holding this game back is its short length, but with its low price, this game is absolutely worth getting on Switch if you don’t already have it elsewhere. | |||
| Vitamin Connection | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | A- | |
tl;drVitamin Connection is a Two-Stick Shooter that splits up the ship’s functions between two Joy-Cons in a way that makes this game ideal for two-player co-op. It’s got an appealing presentation, a great soundtrack, and makes some really clever use of the Joy-Cons’ functionality, and really the only negative things I can say about it are that it’s not a game you can play in portable mode, and it’s not a game you’ll really want to play solo. But if you have a friend to join you, this game is a must-have. | |||
| Wandersong | Puzzle-Platformer | A- | |
tl;drWandersong is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players in the role of a bard looking to save the world by singing different musical notes to solve puzzles. Despite its simple, unimpressive graphics and lack of challenging gameplay, this game has an absolutely charming presentation, a wonderful story, excellent music, and is overall a fantastic experience for all ages. | |||
| What the Golf? | Sports (Golf) / Misc. | A- | |
tl;drWhat the Golf? Is a family-friendly game that starts with the basic concept of golf and then re-works it and messes with its basic fundamentals in as many ways as possible. The result is a game with tons of variety, a great sense of humor, and a surprisingly fun multiplayer mode. Definitely worth a try even if you’re not a fan of golf. | |||
| World of Final Fantasy Maxima | Turn-Based Monster Collecting JRPG | A- | |
tl;drWorld of Final Fantasy Maxima is a fanservice-filled love letter to fans of the Final Fantasy games, with gameplay similar to the Pokemon games, although with plenty enough originality to set it apart. The game has a great presentation with excellent music, and there’s some good depth to the game’s battle systems. Fans of the Final Fantasy series, fans of Monster collecting games, and fans of traditional JRPGs should definitely give this game a look. | |||
| World of Goo | Puzzle | A- | |
tl;drWorld of Goo is a physics-based puzzle game that’s oozing with personality and overflowing with inventive ideas. | |||
| A Monster’s Expedition | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drA Monster’s Expedition is a family-friendly Puzzle Game where players take the role of a cuddly monster exploring an outdoor museum of humanity. The puzzle design is good and becomes more involved over time, the presentation is lovely with particularly good sound design, and the clever satire caused by monsters trying to understand humanity is excellent. The game can feel a bit repetitive at times, and it’s not always clear where you can and can’t reach just yet, but overall this is a superb Puzzle Game well worth playing. | |||
| Art of Balance | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drArt of Balance is a physics-based Puzzle game where you stack blocks and try to keep them from tipping over or falling. This version has a decent amount of content and some multiplayer modes, and the core gameplay here is still as solid as ever. | |||
| Astro Bears | Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drAstro Bears is a family-friendly Party game that expands on the earlier game Astro Bears Party, with the same core gameplay – it plays like a 3D version of Snake and Tron Bikes, with players leaving trails to try to snag others while avoiding trails themselves. It’s a fast-paced, fun, accessible Party game, but even with additional content over its predecessor, the game feels a bit… well, bare. Still loads of fun in short bursts, but not likely to be a game you play for hours. | |||
| Bakeru | 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drBakeru is a family-friendly 3D Platformer that puts players in the role of a tanuki magically transformed into a human (among other things), in a wacky adventure through an anachronistic version of Japan with spirits, mechs, and plenty of absurdity in between. This game doesn’t do anything especially new or truly extraordinary, but everything it does is fun, accessible, and varied, making for an overall enjoyable adventure well worth checking out for any fan of 3D Platformers. | |||
| Boomerang Fu | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drBoomerang Fu is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade-style Party Game where players play as anthropomorphized food items trying to off one another with boomerangs. The core mechanics here are excellent, giving players a lot of nuance and variety while maintaining simple controls that are easy for anyone to pick up. It could use more content, but overall this is an excellent Party Game well worth adding to your collection. | |||
| Cat Quest II | Action-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drCat Quest II, like the first game, is a family-friendly Action-RPG that simplifies numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined, user-friendly, and… well, full of puns. And this game builds on its predecessor by adding an exceptional and well thought-out co-op mode. It still may not have the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre, but it is nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable game, and one fans of the genre would do well to give a look. | |||
| Catastronauts | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drCatastronauts is a family-friendly multiplayer co-op focused Arcade-style game where players scramble around a spaceship in the midst of a battle with an enemy ship, managing multiple tasks. In short, this game plays kinda’ like Overcooked meets Star Trek, with simple but enjoyable gameplay that makes for an excellent co-op experience. Its single-player is a bit lacking, there’s no online, and the stage variety has nothing on Overcooked, but otherwise this is a great game in that same style, and anyone who enjoys that franchise should definitely give this a try. | |||
| Chico and the Magic Orchards DX | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drChico and the Magic Orchards DX is a family-friendly character-based Top-Down puzzle game stylized to look like a Game Boy Color game, where players take the role of a squirrel solving puzzles by pushing around a walnut. The puzzle design and boss design here is phenomenal, and the presentation is pitch-perfect to capture nostalgia. And while there are some irritating control issues, overall this game is an absolute winner, well worth playing. | |||
| Cosmic Express | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drCosmic Express is a family-friendly Puzzle Game where players create train routes in various space colonies to deliver aliens to their homes. The gameplay here is simple but well-crafted, with some really clever puzzle design. There’s also a good amount of content here, some good variety, and an adorable presentation. If you enjoy Puzzle games, this is definitely one you’ll want to get. | |||
| Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy | Compilation / 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drCrash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a collection of the original three PlayStation Crash Bandicoot games, family-friendly 3D Platformers that have been given a glorious makeover here. The gameplay is still excellent as well, though it has aged a bit in places – the restricted level design and unforgiving gameplay can be a cause for frustration. However, overall this is a superb collection well worth having. | |||
| Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time | 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drCrash Bandicoot 4 is a family-friendly Platformer that is an excellent follow-up to the N. Sane Trilogy, and a solid (albeit downgraded) port from more powerful platforms that still looks outstanding on Nintendo Switch. While this game can’t offer the same kind of value seen in the N. Sane Trilogy, or the same level of depth and variety as an average Mario game, this is nevertheless an outstanding Platformer well worth adding to your collection. | |||
| Crash Bandicoot – Quadrilogy Bundle | Compilation / 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drCrash Bandicoot – Quadrilogy Bundle is a Compilation that includes Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4, which combined include 4 fantastic family-friendly Action-Platformers. As a package it’s a tad pricey, but it’s still a decent deal if you’re looking to add some great Platformers to your collection. | |||
| Crazy BMX World | Compilation / Auto-Runner | B+ | |
tl;drCrazy BMX World is a Compilation of the family-friendly Auto-Runner games Bike Rider DX, Bike Rider Dx2: Galaxy, and the previously Japan-only Bike Rider DX3: Time Rider. This Compilation frustratingly forces players to unlock all of its games, doesn’t support Pro Controllers, and lacks the earlier releases’ DLC. However, at $3, this is still an outstanding bargain of a package that contains simple but compelling Auto-Runner gameplay, and anyone who enjoys this sort of game or wants a fun but simple time-waster on the cheap would do well to pick this game up. | |||
| De Blob 2 | 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drDe Blob 2 is a port of a 3D platformer originally released on multiple platforms in 2011, with players controlling a blob bouncing around levels to splash color onto the monochrome surroundings. This game is much-improved over its predecessor, with better controls and level design, and more variety. This is a solid 3D platformer with a fun, unique premise, well worth checking out. | |||
| Debris Infinity | 2-Stick Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drDebris Infinity is a Two-Stick Shooter that’s like a mash-up of Geometry Wars and Asteroids. It looks good, plays well, and the Slow-Mo feature actually brings something interesting to the table. The game is a bit short on features, but what’s here is top-notch. | |||
| Dragon Quest Builders | Action-RPG / Open-World Sandbox | B+ | |
tl;drDragon Quest Builders is an Action-RPG with an open world and creation elements to it that are very comparable to Minecraft, and an anime style and story that are very much a Dragon Quest thing. That said, this game is much more linear and focused than Minecraft, and although it doesn’t have many of the improvements made in Builders 2, it still has a lot to offer, and it’s a fantastic game well worth playing for fans of Action-RPGs and Open-World games alike. | |||
| Draknek and Friends Puzzle Bundle | Compilation / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drDraknek and Friends Puzzle Bundle is a Compilation of four solid family-friendly Puzzle games – three of them are different takes on the “block pushing puzzle”, and one that has you creating train routes. The savings over buying the games separately is moderate, but well worth it as there aren’t any stinkers here. This package is a good choice for Puzzle Game fans. | |||
| Draknek & Friends Puzzle Bundle (6 Games) | Compilation / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drDraknek and Friends Puzzle Bundle (6 Games) is a Compilation of six family-friendly Puzzle games – four of them are different takes on Sokoban-style “block pushing puzzles”, but despite this these games all remain distinct in their own right. The savings over buying the games separately is pretty good, and the overall quality of this bundle is pretty high. This package is definitely worth a look for Puzzle Game fans. | |||
| Farewell North | 3D Platformer / Puzzle-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drFarewell North is a 3D Platformer and Puzzle-Platformer that has players moving through an emotional story of a woman and her dog visiting Scottish islands after the death of a beloved family member. The gameplay here is fine but nothing special, but this gameplay isn’t really the point. This is more about the moving story and beautiful presentation, and in that regard this game absolutely succeeds. | |||
| Figment | Graphic Adventure/Top-Down Action | B+ | |
tl;drFigment is a Graphic Adventure that puts you in the role of a resident of a mind under attack by inner demons. The game has some delightfully inventive visuals, memorable characters, and clever puzzles that are just the right amount of tricky. The game’s big flaw is its boring, tedious combat, which is really unnecessary, but also thankfully uncommon through the game. | |||
| Find the Balance | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drFind the Balance is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle game where players must stack numerous objects without them falling. While this game doesn’t have the nice presentation or some of the features of Art of Balance, it makes up for it with a good variety of game modes, including an excellent Endless mode. If you’re looking for a good, inexpensive Puzzle game, this is well worth trying. | |||
| Freedom Planet 2 | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drFreedom Planet 2 once again delivers its great take on the core Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay, and this time improves on multiple elements in the gameplay and presentation. The result is an outstanding Platformer that any fan of Sonic-style games should absolutely get their hands on. | |||
| Freshly Frosted | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drFreshly Frosted is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players place conveyor belts to guide donuts from their ovens to the display shelf. The puzzle mechanics here are simple but good, and the presentation is absolutely delightful, with a wonderfully upbeat and calming atmosphere that makes this game a joy to play. Puzzle fans will definitely want to give this one a look. | |||
| Get Packed: Couch Chaos | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drGet Packed is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players scrambling to remove items from a property and toss them into a moving truck. The co-op gameplay here is good, but lacking content in a way that ensures it won’t last long. The competitive gameplay, on the other hand, is delightful enough to earn this game a proper spot in your Party Game rotation. | |||
| Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Owltimate Edition | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drGiana Sisters is a family-friendly Platformer that has players swapping between two different versions of the world to use different abilities and get past obstacles. This game feels similar to Donkey Kong Country, but its mechanics are all its own. This is a beautiful game with fun mechanics that’s absolutely a must-play for fans of the genre, even if it suffers a bit of sameyness throughout. | |||
| Hexologic | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drHexologic is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players placing dots in hexagonal tiles to add up to line totals surrounding the tiles. The gameplay is simple but compelling, and the presentation is excellent with a wonderful calming soundtrack. For the low asking price of $3, this game is an excellent addition to any Puzzle gamer’s collection. | |||
| Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition | Puzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drHome Sheep Home is a family-friendly co-op Puzzle-Platformer and Party Game based on the Shaun the Sheep animated series and films. This game manages to do a great job with all of its disparate elements – the license is scaled-down somewhat, but what’s here does justice to the franchise. The Puzzle-Platformer content is smartly well-crafted, and the Party Game content is fun and varied enough to keep players entertained for a good while. I have some issues with the core Platformer mechanics here, but overall this is an excellent package that does its best to please everyone, and largely succeeds. | |||
| Inferno 2 | 2-Stick Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drInferno 2 is a straightforward 2-Stick Shooter that has solid gameplay, a slick presentation, and good Co-Op. It’s a bit on the easy side, but fans of the genre will find it to be an excellent choice, especially for its low price tag. | |||
| Is This Seat Taken? | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drIs This Seat Taken? is a family-friendly logic-based Puzzle game that has you trying to assign seating to a group of people so that all their individual needs are satisfied. The gameplay here is straightforward and accessible but still enjoyable, with new quirks and complications added as you continue playing, and the quaint presentation is wonderfully appealing. This game doesn’t push any envelopes, but it also doesn’t have any significant flaws. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, you’ll definitely want to give this a try. | |||
| Jenny LeClue: Detectivu | Graphic Adventure | B+ | |
tl;drJenny LeClue is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure that tells a story-within-a-story of an author writing a tale about a kid detective. The presentation here is outstanding, with some truly wonderful writing and voice acting. The gameplay isn’t very revolutionary or challenging, but that only makes it a better choice for younger or more inexperienced players, and more skilled players will still probably find the game’s wonderful writing makes this a worthwhile purchase. | |||
| Kaze and the Wild Masks | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drKaze and the Wild Masks is a Family-Friendly Platformer that is clearly directly based on the Donkey Kong Country games, and while it may not be very original, the gameplay here is excellent, the level design and enemy design is great, there’s good pacing and variety. This is a superb Platformer, and a must-have for Donkey Kong Country fans. | |||
| Kittens and Yarn | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drKittens and Yarn is a family-friendly hex-based tile-swapping Puzzle game that tasks players with rearranging hexagonal tiles to make the lines of colored yarn on the tiles match up. The surprisingly-compelling gameplay is complimented by a warm, soothing presentation. The game is short, but at $3, it’s still well worth picking up, and as such I think Puzzle game fans should consider this a must-have. | |||
| Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series | Compilation / Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drKlonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a Compilation of modern remakes of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil, a pair of charming family-friendly Platformers that both do a superb job of combining 2D gameplay with 3D elements, all wrapped in a presentation that’s absolutely wonderful, if a tad quaint and outdated. There are a few places here or there where I feel like these games could be further improved, and the selling of bonus content for an additional $20 seems unnecessarily greedy, but overall it’s hard to see this Compilation as anything but a wonderful package that any Platformer fan should absolutely snatch up. | |||
| LEGO DC Super-Villains | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drLEGO DC Super-Villains is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this being the fourth major crossover into the DC Universe. The focus on the franchise’s villains really gives this game a unique story and tone, and the new character customization system is an absolute highlight of this game, making this one of the best LEGO games in the series thus far. This still isn’t likely to change your opinion if you previously lost interest in the Traveller’s Tales LEGO games, but if you still enjoy them you should consider this a must-have. | |||
| Lethal League Blaze | Sports (Dodgeball) / Fighting Game / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drLethal League Blaze is a mishmash of genres that combines dodge ball with Fighting Game and Party Game elements to craft something truly unique, with a stylish cel-shaded presentation. It could do with more content, and I really wish the online servers weren’t deserted, but if you have a group of players on your couch to share this with, you’ll be in for a great time. | |||
| Loddlenaut | Open-World Action-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drLoddlenaut is a family-friendly Open-World Action-RPG that has players exploring and cleaning up underwater environments, then recycling the junk they collected to upgrade their gear. This is a short but relaxing and satisfying experience with compelling gameplay, and if its topic matter appeals to you, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. | |||
| Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD | Puzzle / Action | B+ | |
tl;drLuigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is the second game in this Action Puzzle franchise starring Mario’s brother cowering and vacuuming his way through a gorgeous game with tons of personality and a fascinating world to explore. Unfortunately, this release changes little from the original Nintendo 3DS version of the game, and yet it jacks the price up a full $20, making this feel like a rip-off, especially when Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the same price and a better game overall. Play that instead. | |||
| Lunistice | 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drLunistice is a family-friendly 3D Platformer with visuals that evoke the classic PlayStation, and game design that’s a lot like Sonic Adventure with less of a focus on speed and more of a focus on platforming. The result is a brilliant love letter to the era that’s delightful to play, and while it’s a bit short and has a few minor issues here and there, for only $5 this is an absolute no-brainer for anyone who loves the Platforming genre, especially those who pine for the golden age of the genre. Do not miss this one! | |||
| Maggie the Magnet | Puzzle-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drMaggie the Magnet is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle-Platformer where players control a magnet by turning on and off its magnetism. The simple one-button gameplay is well-crafted, and combines with excellent level design to make for a thoroughly enjoyable Puzzle game, with a surprisingly hefty amount of content for its small $5 price tag. If you’re a fan of Puzzle games, Maggie the Magnet is well worth picking up. | |||
| Mario & Luigi: Brothership | Turn-Based JRPG | B+ | |
tl;drMario & Luigi: Brothership is a Turn-Based JRPG that once again has you controlling the titular brothers with gameplay that uses timing-based attacks in combat and has you controlling the brothers’ actions separately outside of combat… however, this time so much of what Luigi does has been automated that you can effectively ignore him most of the time, only to tap “L” when he has a “Luigi Logic” moment and does something on his own. Due to this and other flaws, this is my least-favorite game yet in the Mario & Luigi series, but still an enjoyable, polished RPG that’s well worth playing despite its flaws. | |||
| Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drMario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that plays a bit like the XCOM games, but is designed to be more approachable for players who are new to the genre. It looks gorgeous, has some unique gameplay elements, and is pretty user-friendly overall, although genre veterans may find some elements of the game frustrating. | |||
| Monument Valley | Isometric Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drMonument Valley is a family-friendly character-based Isometric Puzzle game where players need to navigate M.C. Escher-like structures by making use of perspective to form pathways. The presentation and puzzle design here is fantastic, though the game is a bit short, the gamepad controls are far from ideal, and touchscreen controls aren’t supported on Nintendo Switch. Despite these issues, this is still well worth a look for Puzzle game fans on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Monument Valley 2 | Isometric Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drMonument Valley 2 is a family-friendly character-based Isometric Puzzle game much like the first game, where players need to navigate M.C. Escher-like structures by making use of perspective to form pathways, but this time they’re joined by their character’s daughter, whose movements they must also keep in mind. The presentation and puzzle design here is once again fantastic, though the game is still short, the gamepad controls are far from ideal, and touchscreen controls aren’t supported on Nintendo Switch. Despite these issues, this is still well worth a look for Puzzle game fans on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Nairi: Tower of Shirin | Graphic Adventure | B+ | |
tl;drNairi: Tower of Shirin is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure about a young girl who finds herself suddenly on the run from forces seeking to capture her, and trying to find answers both to her family’s wearabouts as well as her connection to an ancient mystery. The gameplay here is fairly standard for the genre, but the charming characters, story, and presentation make this well worth a look for fans of the genre, especially for the low $5 price tag. | |||
| New Super Lucky’s Tale | 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drNew Super Lucky’s Tale is a 3D Platformer that takes the Xbox One game and reworks numerous parts of it to create an entirely new and improved experience. This is a solid, polished Platformer through and through, and even if it doesn’t bring anything especially new to the genre, it is still an excellent addition to the Nintendo Switch library, and fans of 3D Platformers should definitely give it a try. | |||
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Compilation / Sports (Various) | B+ | |
tl;drNintendo Switch Sports is a worthy successor to the Wii Sports franchise, with excellent versions of Bowling, Chambara (swordfighting), Golf, and Soccer, decent versions of Tennis and Volleyball, and a terrible version of Badminton. The game is colorful and polished, the sports are fun and accessible, and the online play works great. This game doesn’t do much to evolve this series, but it is a well-rounded and highly enjoyable entry in the series nonetheless. | |||
| Pang Adventures | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drPang Adventures is an Arcade-style game in the classic Buster Bros series, where you shoot bubbles while dodging them. The game doesn’t do anything to revolutionize the series, but what’s here is done well. | |||
| Patrick’s Parabox | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drPatrick’s Parabox is a family-friendly Sokoban-style Puzzle game with an extremely simple presentation and gameplay built around one clever mechanic, that the boxes you’re tasked with pushing around can themselves house Sokoban-style Puzzles. It’s a clever idea that this game makes use of extraordinarily well, with some truly excellent puzzle design. Don’t be discouraged by this game’s simple visuals – this is a game that Puzzle game fans will absolutely want to get ahold of. | |||
| Pianista | Music-Rhythm | B+ | |
tl;drPianista is a family-friendly Music-Rhythm game that has players playing solo piano themes based on the abridged works of legendary classical artists. This means the song list is much more recognizable than what was in the similar game Deemo, but that song list is also much shorter, and the Nintendo Switch version of Pianista unfortunately lacks Deemo’s great touchscreen gameplay. However, this is still absolutely worth picking up for Music-Rhythm fans on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Piczle Puzzle & Watch Collection | Compilation / Picross Puzzle / Puzzle / Simulation | B+ | |
tl;drPiczle Puzzle & Watch Collection is a Compilation of three Puzzle games presented as a Simulation of classic Game & Watch-style handheld LCD devices. The Puzzle games are solid, if a bit simple, and have a good amount of content for the $8 price tag. But what’s really surprising here is just how extensive a Simulation this is, going to some extraordinary lengths to make the LCD devices within the game as realistic as possible. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, this is a solid Compilation for you, but if you’re a fan of retro-style nostalgia, you should absolutely give this game a look. | |||
| Pikmin 2 | Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drPikmin 2 is a port of the second game in the Pikmin series, games loosely within the Real-Time Strategy genre that put the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat. This port has some very minor improvements that make this the definitive version of the game, but overall this is a bare-bones port. However, the core game is still excellent even by today’s standards, and well worth playing if you can overlook the dated visuals and bloated price tag. | |||
| PixelJunk Monsters 2 | Tower Defense | B+ | |
tl;drPixelJunk Monsters 2 takes the solid Tower Defense gameplay of the first game and gives it a wonderful graphical makeover. It’s a bit overly difficult and at times it feels like you don’t make as much headway against enemies as you’d like, but it’s a blast to play in co-op, and overall a solid entry in the genre. | |||
| Pizza Possum | Stealth | B+ | |
tl;drPizza Possum is a family-friendly Stealth game where players take the role of a hungry possum trying to gobble up all food in sight without being nabbed by the cops. The core mechanics here are simple but work well, with some inspired mechanics that put a new spin on the Stealth genre, and an absolutely adorable presentation. I do wish this game built on the core gameplay to give it longer legs, but the short length is easily excused by the low $7 price. Overall, this is an outstanding game well worth checking out for casual gamers and Stealth die-hards alike. | |||
| PlateUp! | Party Game / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drPlateUp! is a family-friendly Arcade-style Party Game with Roguelike elements that is basically an off-brand Overcooked Roguelike. However, while it’s a bit repetitive and its online lobbies are empty, this is still a phenomenal local co-op game, and one that gives players opportunities the Overcooked games lack, like designing your restaurant’s layout. In the end, if you’re looking for a great game to play with friends, this is an outstanding choice. | |||
| Polyroll | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drPolyroll is a family-friendly Platformer that plays like a midway point between a Sonic game and a Mario game, and the result is something that’s actually pretty enjoyable. It’s definitely not going to win any prizes for originality, but what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for with well-crafted gameplay and quality level design. Add to that an appealing $5 price tag and you have a game that Platformer fans should definitely check out. | |||
| Puddle Knights | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drPuddle Knights is a character-based Puzzle game that has you moving around knights so that nobles can step on their capes to avoid getting their feet dirty in puddles of mud. It’s a cute concept with an appealing presentation, and it makes for some really clever puzzles despite how simple it is to play and control. Puzzle fans, this is definitely a game you’ll want to take a look at. | |||
| Puyo Puyo Tetris | Match-4 Falling Block Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drPuyo Puyo Tetris is a Match-4 Falling Block Puzzle game that combines these two genre classics into one wonderful cohesive package that mixes the two in multiple interesting ways. While I wish there were improvements made in the way things are organized in menus and in the presentation, on the whole this is a fantastic Puzzle game that fans of the genre should definitely check out. | |||
| Radical Rabbit Stew | Arcade / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drRadical Rabbit Stew is a family-friendly top-down Arcade-style game with Puzzle elements where players need to knock rabbits into cooking pot-shaped spaceships. It’s a fun and refreshingly unique game with some great old-school sensibilities, and the competitive multiplayer here is a lot of fun too. Unfortunately, that multiplayer is lacking in content, and the limited use of a stage builder feels like a huge missed opportunity too. This is still overall an excellent game, but it feels like a bit of added content here would have made it an absolute must-have. | |||
| Rain on Your Parade | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drRain on Your Parade is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players use a mischievous raincloud to wreak havoc on the lives of “hoomans”. This adorable game has a great sense of humor, makes all sorts of clever cultural references, and has a lot of variety. It’s not especially challenging, but it’s still plenty of fun, especially for players who glee at being the cause of chaos. | |||
| Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drRayman Legends: Definitive Edition is a platformer that doesn’t do anything especially new with the genre, but what it does do is bring quality gameplay, tons of content, and a gorgeous presentation. If you’re a fan of 2D platformers, this game is for you. | |||
| Samba De Amigo: Party Central | Music-Rhythm / Exercise | B+ | |
tl;drSamba De Amigo: Party Central is a Music-Rhythm game with Exercise Game elements has players shaking the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons like maracas. The controls are a bit sloppy and lacking in precision, but they work well enough, and otherwise this is a truly joyous game with great music, great style, and fun gameplay that will have you sweating it out as you dance. Music-Rhythm fans with a Nintendo Switch will definitely want to grab this one. | |||
| Shantae and the Seven Sirens | Metroidvania | B+ | |
tl;drShantae and the Seven Sirens is the fifth game in this series, and this time the world design is a more standard Metroidvania, retaining the series’ signature great animation and colorful, cartoony art style. However, the game is a bit easy, and exploration isn’t as rewarding as some of the best games in the genre. That said, it’s still an excellent Metroidvania well worth checking out. | |||
| Sky Racket | Shmup / Arcade Brick Breaker | B+ | |
tl;drSky Racket is a family-friendly game that combines the Shmup and Brick Breaker genres into one fun, cohesive style of gameplay with a fantastic, colorful, expressive art style and some absolutely superb co-op play. There are a few frustrating flaws that may result in you taking a few unearned hits on occasion, but otherwise this game is a joy to play, especially if you have a friend to play it with. | |||
| Skylanders: Imaginators | Action-RPG / 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drSkylanders Imaginators is the sixth and currently final game in this Toys-to-Life series, a family-friendly Action-RPG with Platformer elements. This game doesn’t do anything truly major to shake up the formula, but rather refines it, making for the best game in the franchise. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch version is arguably the best game in the series thanks largely to the game not needing a “portal” device, and saving your Skylanders figurines so you don’t have to keep scanning them. Unfortunately, by 2022 this is also by far the most expensive version of the game, meaning that as fantastic as it is, you’re probably better off spending less to play any other version of the game. | |||
| Snipperclips – Cut It Out Together! | Puzzle-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drSnipperclips is a Puzzle-Platformer where up to four players control anthropomorphized Joycon controllers snipping off parts of one another to get into shape to solve puzzles. It’s a fun concept that’s well-executed, with a lot of great all-ages Co-Op gameplay. It’s nothing revolutionary or impressive, and there are a few rough edges, but overall this is a solid game worth playing. | |||
| Sonic X Shadow Generations | Compilation / Platformer / 3D Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drSonic X Shadow Generations is an excellent remaster of Sonic Generations, a solid Platformer/3D Platformer, paired with an entirely new Platformer/3D Platformer, Shadow Generations, which despite being short may possibly be the best 3D Sonic game ever made. The Nintendo Switch version suffers a bit from lower framerates than the version of the game on other modern platforms, but otherwise this is an outstanding release that should be considered a must-have for any Sonic fan. | |||
| Super Mario Party | Party Game / Minigame Collection | B+ | |
tl;drSuper Mario Party is the eleventh game in Nintendo’s family-friendly Party Game Minigame Collection series. This game has a ton of different game modes, and while some aren’t so great, others are fantastic. The minigames themselves are fun, varied, and make some clever use of the Joy-Con controller. On that note, you will need Joy-Cons to play this game, and don’t bother with the online play (it’s horrible). Likewise, this isn’t a game you’ll want to play in single-player. However, if you’re looking for a fun time in a party setting, this game does a fantastic job and is a must-have for casual multiplayer fans on the switch. | |||
| Super Mega Baseball 2: Ultimate Edition | Sports (Baseball) | B+ | |
tl;drSuper Mega Baseball 2 is a Baseball game with a cartoony appearance that hides robust gameplay that does a good job catering both to casual players as well as more serious fans of the sport, with good options and excellent support for multiplayer play both online and off. It doesn’t have the real-life license or teams, and you’re not likely to find strangers to play with online, but if you’re looking for a baseball game on the Nintendo Switch, this is the one to get. | |||
| Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble | Arcade / 3D Platformer / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drSuper Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is a fantastic entry in this family-friendly franchise of Arcade-style 3D Platformers about rolling monkeys in balls toward a goal. This release struggles with some performance issues, but its superb level design and excellent multiplayer both online and offline make for an absolutely delightful game well worth getting, and a must-have for fans of the series. | |||
| Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ Fun | Music-Rhythm | B+ | |
tl;drTaiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ Fun is the first Nintendo Switch entry in Namco’s family-friendly Japanese taiko drumming Music-Rhythm game series. Be warned that if you don’t by the taiko drum accessory, the motion controls are terrible, and the gamepad controls lack a soul, but the touchscreen controls are excellent and the “Party Game” mode makes for great gameplay in the same vein as Rhythm Heaven. This game’s cutesy, Japanesey presentation won’t be for everyone, but if you can work around its flaws, Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum ‘N’ Fun is a solid addition to your Nintendo Switch Music-Rhythm library. | |||
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection | Compilation / Arcade Brawler / Fighting Game / Action-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a Compilation of 13 of Konami’s classic Ninja Turtles games, with the highlights being 2 different versions of the original Arcade game, 2.5 versions of Turtles in Time, and the frequently overlooked NES game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. Add to this a massive collection of extras and behind-the-scenes content, and this is a must-have collection for Arcade Brawler enthusiasts… even if it’s padded out with a lot of non-Arcade Brawler games that range from mediocre to outright terrible. | |||
| Tetris Forever | Compilation / Falling-Block Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drTetris Forever is neither a comprehensive collection of Tetris games, nor does it contain the absolute best versions of Tetris among its 17 included games, some of which are very similar to each other, and nearly all of which are family-friendly Falling Block Puzzle games bearing the Tetris name, making this Compilation feel very one-note. However, what’s here is still a compelling mix of different takes on the classic Puzzle game, along with a truly excellent guided tour through the early history of Tetris’ rise to success. Puzzle Game fans and those with a fascination with videogame history should both consider this Compilation a must-have. | |||
| The Adventure Pals | Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drThe Adventure Pals is a family-friendly Platformer with a wacky theme that seems reminiscent of Adventure Time, with wacky, cartoony hijinks. The platforming here is excellent, even if it’s not as original as the presentation, and broken up by mediocre button-mashy combat. Fans of the genre would do well to give this one a try. | |||
| The Last Campfire | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drThe Last Campfire is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game that has players exploring a small but beautiful world filled with interesting characters. It’ doesn’t do anything to truly shake up the genre, and it has a frustrating issue with dropped frames, but it’s otherwise well-made and well worth playing. | |||
| The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening | Top-Down Action-RPG | B+ | |
tl;drThe Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is a remake of the classic Game Boy games that gives the game a new, memorable art style, but mostly leaves the gameplay of the original intact. Unfortunately, this release has numerous flaws, including disappointing framerate issues, control issues, and missed opportunities in what little new content there is. Plus, the $60 price tag is ridiculous. It’s still a great game, but in many ways it’s also a disappointing one. | |||
| Thomas Was Alone | Puzzle-Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drThomas Was Alone is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that uses simple visuals, simple gameplay, and outstanding writing and narration to tell a delightful story with wonderful characters. This game isn’t going to impress anyone with its graphics or wow them with some new gameplay mechanic, but it is a master class at telling a story using narration and mechanics in a videogame. If you have not yet played it on another platform, I highly recommend it. | |||
| Tricky Towers | Falling Block Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drTricky Towers is a family-friendly physics-based falling block puzzle game where players try to balance and stack blocks to accomplish a specific goal. While the game could have used more content and options, overall this is a good entry in the genre, especially in local multiplayer mode. | |||
| Underhero | Platformer / RPG | B+ | |
tl;drUnderhero is a game that combines RPG and Platformer elements with a story that casts you as a minion who manages to kill the story’s hero and must now scramble to secretly become the new hero. This game has a fun story, excellent characters, a great sense of humor and a good soundtrack, and the excellent RPG combat takes a few ideas from the Paper Mario games. Unfortunately, the platforming isn’t so great, but everything else here is so good I’d still highly recommend it to RPG fans. | |||
| Untitled Goose Game | Stealth / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drUntitled Goose Game is an odd combination of Stealth/Puzzle/Sandbox that delivers on its promise of making you a terrible goose who loves making people miserable. The game has a few issues with its controls, but on the whole it’s an all-around enjoyable experience | |||
| WarioWare: Get It Together! | Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drWarioWare: Get It Together! Is the Nintendo Switch entry in the family-friendly Arcade-style Party game that has players trying to complete over 200 “microgames” played in rapid-fire sequences. This game’s take on the formula has players interacting with the games using the varied cast of characters, and while not as ambitious as some entries in the series, it’s still a wonderfully fun time, especially when playing the game’s multiplayer features (most of which need to be unlocked through play). If you’re looking for a fun game to add to your Party Game rotation, WarioWare: Get It Together is an excellent choice. | |||
| WarioWare: Move It! | Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drWarioWare: Move It! Is the second game in Nintendo’s silly family-friendly WarioWare Arcade / Party Game franchise to hit the Nintendo Switch, and this is a much more traditional entry in the series than the first game was. In fact, it was clearly directly inspired by the Wii entry in the franchise, Smooth Moves. While I don’t think it quite measures up to that game, WarioWare: Move It! is still an incredibly creative, enjoyable, uproariously funny, and extremely accessible entry in the franchise, with some solid multiplayer potential. This game doesn’t do anything truly groundbreaking for this series, but fans of the franchise will find it to be an excellent game well worth picking up. | |||
| Wilmot’s Warehouse | Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drWilmot’s Warehouse is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players sorting boxes as they see fit, and then looking for specific boxes to fill customer orders. It’s a simple game with compelling puzzle gameplay that lets players decide the best way to go about doing things, and it’s even better in co-op. I wish the game had more gameplay modes that didn’t rush the player, but overall this is a solid entry in the genre, especially if you have a friend to play with. | |||
| Zumba Garden | Match-3 Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drZumba Garden is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle game which, like its predecessor, is clearly copying the Zuma formula, and like its predecessor it does a surprisingly good job of it. In fact, this time I would argue things are even better, with a solid presentation and an outstanding RPG-style upgrade system. There are a few options and game modes I wish this game had, and a few minor complaints here and there, but it’s hard to complain when for only $3, we’re getting a “copycat” game that’s nearly as good as the original. If you’re a Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch, this is definitely one to get. | |||
| Abzu | 3D Exploration | B | |
tl;drAbzu is a family-friendly audiovisual experience in the same vein as games like Journey and Flower, which makes sense as it was created by some of the same people. This game has you exploring a beautiful, diverse ocean teeming with life. While the gameplay is shallow and lacks any sort of challenge, and the game never reaches the emotional heights of Journey, this is still a beautiful and exhilarating experience well worth having. | |||
| Battleship | Strategy/Board Game | B | |
tl;drBattleship is a digital version of the classic family-friendly 2-player board game, and it does a very good job of bringing that classic gameplay to the Nintendo Switch, with a good selection of multiplayer modes. It also has a Commanders mode that livens things up some. I wish this game was even more inventive with its departure from the classic formula, and in particular I wish the game’s single-player mode wasn’t a slog, but overall this is a solid version of the classic board game. | |||
| Bug Academy | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drBug Academy is a family-friendly physics-based puzzle game where players command a swarm of bugs to complete various tasks. There’s a lot of variety here, and the silly presentation is wonderful. It’s not an especially deep game, and the lack of precision in the controls can be a bit frustrating at times, but overall this is a wonderful game well worth playing. | |||
| BurgerTime Party! | Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drBurgerTime Party! is a family-friendly reimagining of the classic arcade game that updates the visuals and adds some new stage mechanics, while keeping the core gameplay intact. However, the real joy here are the new multiplayer modes this game adds, that should make this a blast as both a co-op and competitive Party game. Either way, this is a wonderful new take on the original. | |||
| Castle on the Coast | 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drCastle on the Coast is a family-friendly 3D Platformer where you play as an anthropomorphic giraffe exploring the titular magic castle. This is a pretty short game, and it’s terribly unpolished, yet despite its issues it’s still really enjoyable to play with a fun character move set and some enjoyable level design. The result is a game that more than makes up for its flaws, and is well worth playing for Platformer fans. | |||
| Cat Quest | Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drCat Quest is a family-friendly Action-RPG that simplifies numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined, user-friendly, and… well, full of cat puns. It may not have the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre, but it is nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable game, and one fans of the genre would do well to give a look. | |||
| Cat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack | Compilation / Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drCat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack is a Compilation of two family-friendly Action-RPGs that simpliy numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined and user-friendly, albeit lacking the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre. This physical compilation is slightly pricier than buying the games separately in digital form, but if you’re looking for a solid pair of Action-RPGs on a cartridge, this Compilation is worth looking into. | |||
| Chess Ultra | Board Game | B | |
tl;drChess Ultra is a version of the classic Board Game with nice, realistic graphics and classy music, though I find myself wishing for more options when it comes to that presentation, which can even make it difficult to see the pieces sometimes. On the bright side, there’s a good amount of content here, and overall this is a solid game of chess, despite these issues. | |||
| Color Zen | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drColor Zen is a Free-To-Play puzzle game that’s the best kind of Free-To-Play. It’s a simple, straightforward puzzle game with a clean design and you get a lot of content without being hounded by microtransactions. It’s just a pity it doesn’t play as well in docked mode as it does in portable mode. | |||
| Conduct Together! | Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drConduct Together! is a family-friendly Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that has players using simple controls to manage multiple trains and switches. It’s a fun, challenging task of multitasking with some excellent co-op play baked right into the game design. The game’s controls never quite feel intuitive, and I wish the game expanded on its potential, but overall this is a solid “easy to learn, tough to master”-style game, and one that fans of co-op games should absolutely try. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! | Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! is an Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. It’s more like a food version of Simon Says, with multiple steps for some items. The game does a good job keeping things interesting by having you manage multiple things at once, and it makes for a good co-op experience, although it’s frustrating that it doesn’t do a better job to make important information immediately accessible to players in the chaos. | |||
| Cruis’n Blast | Arcade Racing | B | |
tl;drCruis’n Blast is a family-friendly Arcade-style Racing game that plays like a roller coaster ride, with every second of gameplay packed with thrills and eye-popping sights to see, but with extremely shallow gameplay. This is still a magnificently fun experience to play, and perhaps the perfect game for younger racing game fans, but not everyone will appreciate this game’s dedication to magnificent spectacle above all else. | |||
| Donkey Kong Country Returns HD | Platformer | B | |
tl;drDonkey Kong Country Returns HD is a solid remaster of an excellent Platformer from Wii and Nintendo 3DS, but this release doesn’t add much, and overall does little to justify its $60 price tag, especially when Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is also on Nintendo Switch and an overall superior game. By comparison, this feels a bit like taking a step backwards at this point. | |||
| Faaast Penguin | Racing Game / 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drFaaast Penguin is a family-friendly free-to-play online-only multiplayer-focused Racing Game with 3D Platformer elements that has players sliding down courses as a penguin. The gameplay here is both deep and accessible, with a good sense of speed and frenetic fun, monetization that isn’t overly-burdensome, and the performance on Nintendo Switch is decent. I would have liked more track variety, but overall this is a Racing Game that’s definitely worth downloading and trying out. | |||
| Filament | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drFilament is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has you returning power to a derelict spacecraft by solving puzzles involving wrapping a powered cord around a series of pillars. While there’s nothing truly extraordinary about it, this is an all-around solid Puzzle game with some well-crafted puzzles and a unique premise. Fans of the genre would do well to give it a try. | |||
| Fishing Star World Tour | Sports (Fishing) | B | |
tl;drFishing Star World Tour is a Fishing game that takes a cartoony, arcadey approach to the genre. The visuals here are gorgeous, the game’s use of motion controls are superb, and the arcadey gameplay infuses catching and reeling in a fish with enough variety to keep it from getting stale too quickly. The only problem here (beyond the annoying sax music when reeling in a fish) is frustrating progression. Still, this is one of the best Fishing games on the Nintendo Switch, and well worth a look for anyone wanting a good Fishing game. | |||
| Freedom Planet | Platformer | B | |
tl;drFreedom Planet is a Platformer that looks, feels, and plays like a Sonic game without the high speeds, while bringing some unique things to the table as well. Fans of platformers and especially fans of Sonic games should definitely give this one a look. | |||
| Heave Ho | Platformer / Party Game | B | |
tl;drHeave Ho is a Platformer that has players controlling a character’s two hands to try to grasp and grapple their way to an exit. It’s fun in single-player, but this game truly shines in multiplayer. It’s not perfect, but if you have four people who can maybe-sorta’ work together, this is a really fun time. | |||
| Hidden Through Time | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drHidden Through Time is a hidden objects-style Puzzle game that’s reminiscent of Where’s Waldo, with a few clever additions to the formula, including the ability to create and share your own puzzles. There are definitely areas where even more could have been done to make this game even better, but overall this game succeeds very well at what it’s aiming to do. | |||
| Hotshot Racing | Arcade Racing | B | |
tl;drHotshot Racing is a retro-styled Arcade Racer that’s designed to evoke classics like Daytona USA, and it largely succeeds, with excellent gameplay and wonderful multiplayer play. Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent nostalgia piece is harmed by a lack of variety in its tracks, as well as some atrocious rubber-banding. It’s still fun, but these flaws keep it from true retro greatness. | |||
| Ibb & Obb | Puzzle-Platformer | B | |
tl;drIbb & Obb is a co-op focused Puzzle-Platformer that requires two players to play. However, if you do have a friend to play with, this is a solid entry in the genre that makes good use of its simple mechanics to deliver some great co-op gameplay. | |||
| Inbento | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drInbento is a Puzzle game that has players placing items in a bento box to recreate a photo of a finished layout. This game doesn’t do anything particularly extraordinary to push the genre forward, but what it does do it does very well, with well-designed puzzles and a great presentation. Puzzle fans will find this game well worth its low asking price. | |||
| Instant Tennis | Sports (Tennis) | B | |
tl;drInstant Tennis is a cartoony, family-friendly Tennis game that offers multiple ways to play – both with traditional and motion-control, and surprisingly they’re all pretty good. The presentation is a bit plain and the game is bare-bones when it comes to content, but if you’re looking for solid Tennis gameplay well-suited to all types of players, Instant Tennis absolutely delivers. | |||
| Jet Kave Adventure | Platformer | B | |
tl;drJet Kave Adventure is a family-friendly Platformer that has players taking the role of a caveman with a jet pack. Beautiful visuals, great level design, and solid Platforming all make this a superb entry in the genre, though I wish the framerates were better and I could do without the hang gliding levels. Despite those issues, I do recommend this game to Platforming fans – it’s a pretty good take on the genre. | |||
| Kemono Friends Picross | Picross Puzzle | B | |
tl;drKemono Friends Picross is a Picross game with 150 traditional Picross puzzles, 150 Mega Picross puzzles, and 110 unlockable Clip Picross levels, with a clean and colorful presentation and plenty of game options. As with Jupiter’s other games in the genre, it lacks touchscreen controls, but on the other hand its tutorial is perhaps the best I’ve encountered at teaching new players how to play. If you’re a fan of the genre or looking to try your first Picross game, this game is well worth a look. | |||
| Laser Kitty Pow Pow | Arcade | B | |
tl;drLaser Kitty Pow Pow is an Arcade-style game where one or two players play as giant cats on clouds shooting armies using laser eyes. It’s silly, fast and frenetic, and surprisingly fun. For the tiny price tag, this is a surprisingly good simple game. | |||
| LEGO The Incredibles | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | B | |
tl;drLEGO The Incredibles is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, this time with its focus on Pixar’s superhero franchise. This game doesn’t dramatically change the usual Traveller’s Tales formula, but it gets a lot of things right, such as its custom character creator, its early access to the game’s Open-World, and its useful new co-op abilities. I don’t think this game will win over anyone who’s sick of the LEGO franchise at this point, but I do think it’s one of the more underrated games in that franchise. | |||
| Locomotion | 3D Puzzle | B | |
tl;drLocomotion is a family-friendly 3D Puzzle game that has players navigating self-contained 3D stages using a locomotive, looking over how each stage works and determining the best path and order to approach its challenges. The presentation here is absolutely adorable, and the puzzles themselves are often very clever, though the game could do with more control options. Fans of Puzzle games and Captain Toad in particular will definitely want to give this game a look. | |||
| Lost Sphear | Turn-Based JRPG | B | |
tl;drLost Sphear, like its spiritual predecessor I Am Setsuna, is a Turn-Based JRPG inspired by the Super Nintendo-era classics of the genre. It’s a solid family-friendly entry in the genre that gets a lot right, but doesn’t do anything truly noteworthy like the games it seeks to imitate. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll likely find this to be a solid addition to your game library, but not a memorable one. | |||
| Mario Strikers: Battle League | Sports (Soccer) | B | |
tl;drMario Strikers: Battle League is a Soccer game starring Mario and friends that has a wild presentation, a fantastic metal-infused soundtrack, and solid gameplay. Underneath all the flash and substance is somewhat lacking variety, but other than that this is an excellent game of Soccer. | |||
| Mario Vs. Donkey Kong | Puzzle-Platformer | B | |
tl;drMario Vs. Donkey Kong is a remake of a Game Boy Advance Puzzle-Platformer that not only completely recreates the visuals and sound from scratch, but adds multiple new features and a bunch of new levels as well. This is an all-around solid remake of a solid game, which is why it’s disappointing that the price seems overly high for what’s on offer here. Still, if you’re a fan of Puzzle-Platformers this is a game you’d be advised to give it a chance if you can snag it on sale. | |||
| Max: The Curse of Brotherhood | Puzzle-Platformer | B | |
tl;drMax: The Curse of Brotherhood is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing a young kid on a quest to rescue his brother after unwittingly wishing him away. The presentation here is good, despite an unlikeable protagonist, and the gameplay here is solid, if a bit limited. There definitely are areas here where the game feels lacking, but overall this is a worthwhile entry in the genre. | |||
| Motif | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drMotif is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players recreate snowflake-like geometric shapes. This game has an elegant simplicity to it, and while simple both in graphics and gameplay, it is still surprisingly compelling. | Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid | Open-World Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drNatsu-Mon is a family-friendly Open-World Action-RPG where players take the role of a young kid running free in a rural Japanese community and filling his summer days with whatever activities players choose to partake in. This game has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere and pulls elements from Animal Crossing and Zelda games while still retaining its own sense of identity. While this game doesn’t reach the same heights of those franchises, it’s still an enjoyable game well worth a look for anyone wanting something low-key and chill. | |||
| New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe | Platformer | B | |
tl;drNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port of a family-friendly 2012 Wii U Platformer, along with its standalone sequel. This game is absurdly overpriced and horribly unoriginal, and many players will be better off getting Super Mario Maker 2. Having said that, there’s no denying that the gameplay here is still excellent, and the presentation is absolutely polished. If you’re a fan of Platformers or just looking for a simple, straightforward Mario game, you should be more than satisfied with this game. | |||
| Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | B | |
tl;drNickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a game that combines Fighting Game, Platformer, and Party Game elements much like the Super Smash Bros. series, but featuring Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Ninja Turtles. The gameplay and presentation is overall decent, but also feels lacking in some areas, has nasty loading times, and some odd choices have been made with the art direction. Overall this is still a solid entry in the genre, and well worth picking up when the game goes on sale for $5. | |||
| Ninjin: Clash of Carrots | Arcade Brawler | B | |
tl;drNinjin: Clash of Carrots is a refreshingly unique arcade brawler hidden under a cutesy exterior. While the presentation leaves something to be desired, the gameplay is original and the sense of humor here is amusing. Fans of the genre, don’t let yourself be fooled by the game’s fluffy visuals, it’s well worth your time. | |||
| Persephone | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPersephone is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game where players must use the bodies from their previous deaths to solve the game’s puzzles. It’s a clever gimmick that’s used well here, and although this game doesn’t do anything truly extraordinary, it’s a solid entry in its genre that’s well worth playing. | |||

However, like the first game, this nearly-ideal version of Picross falls short of perfection due to a lack of touchscreen controls. | |||

tl;drPicross S4 is a Picross game with 150 traditional Picross puzzles, 150 Mega Picross puzzles, 30 Color Picross puzzles, 150 Clip Picross puzzles comprised of multiple smaller puzzles, and five “Extra” puzzles. Like previous games in the series, this one has a superb presentation and it is otherwise a marginal improvement over the third game due to the expanded number of puzzles. However, this nearly-ideal version of Picross shares the main flaw of its predecessors – a lack of touchscreen controls. | |||
| Picross S5 | Picross Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPicross S5 is a Picross game with 150 traditional Picross puzzles, 150 Mega Picross puzzles, 30 Color Picross puzzles, 150 Clip Picross puzzles comprised of multiple smaller puzzles, and five “Extra” puzzles. Like previous games in the series, this one has a superb presentation and a solid array of features, but this nearly-ideal version of Picross shares the main flaw of its predecessors – a lack of touchscreen controls. | |||
| Piczle Cells | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPiczle Cells is a block-sliding Puzzle game where players combine microscopic blobs to make bigger blobs. The gameplay is decent but nothing revolutionary. However, the presentation is good and there’s a healthy amount of content here for the low $5 price tag. Puzzle game fans looking to pad out their collection should find this a worthwhile addition to their Nintendo Switch library. | |||
| Piczle Cross Adventure | Picross Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPiczle Cross Adventure is a solid Picross Puzzle game that doesn’t do anything extraordinary for the genre, but nevertheless features well-crafted gameplay for the genre, with the only major flaw here being the lack of touchscreen support. Otherwise, this is an excellent entry in the genre. | |||
| Piczle Lines DX | Numberlink Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPiczle Lines DX is a Puzzle game that has you connecting dots of the same color with lines of a specified length. It’s simple enough that it’s easy to pick up, and compelling enough to keep you going. Worth a look for puzzle fans. | |||
| Piczle Lines DX: 500 More Puzzles! | Numberlink Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPiczle Lines DX: 500 More Puzzles!, like Piczle Lines DX, is a Puzzle game that has you connecting dots of the same color with lines of a specified length. It’s simple enough that it’s easy to pick up, and compelling enough to keep you going. This game drops the first game’s story mode in favor of a lot more puzzles and some bonus material, giving it the edge in my book. Worth a look for puzzle fans. | |||
| Piczle Lines DX Bundle | Compilation / Numberlink Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPiczle Lines DX Bundle is a pair of Numberlink-style Puzzle games with a good amount of content and features, with each of its two games helping to fill in the gaps of the other. Fans of the genre should definitely give it a look. | |||
| Pikmin 1 | Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drPikmin 1 is a port of the first game in the Pikmin series, games loosely within the Real-Time Strategy genre that put the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat. This port has some very minor improvements that make this the definitive version of the game, but overall this is a bare-bones port of the worst game in the mainline series. It’s still well worth playing, but you’re probably better off playing this game’s sequels instead. | |||
| Pikmin 1 + 2 Bundle | Compilation / Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drPikmin 1 + 2 Bundle is a compilation of ports of the first and second games in the Pikmin series, games loosely within the Real-Time Strategy genre that put the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat. These ports have some very minor improvements that make this the definitive version of these games, but overall they’re both bare-bones ports. And while this package’s $50 price tag does save you $10 over the price of buying both games separately, it still feels overpriced considering how little effort was made to modernize these games. Make no mistake, the first two Pikmin games are still wonderful, but they deserved a better modern release than this, or at least a cheaper one. | |||
| Please, Touch the Artwork | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPlease, Touch the Artwork is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players solve puzzles in three distinct styles with a presentation inspired by abstract art and framed as an interactive art gallery. The puzzles here are decent, and the game’s $8 or 160 puzzles is a pretty good value, but the classy presentation elevates this game, making it a solid choice for Puzzle fans, and an especially good choice for art lovers. | |||
| Pode | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | B | |
tl;drPode is a nice little co-op Platforming-Puzzle game with endearing characters, pleasant music, and a challenge level that seems like it would be great for parents to play with their kids, or perhaps for a hardcore gamer to play with a casual gamer significant other. | |||
| Princess Peach: Showtime! | 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drPrincess Peach: Showtime! is mostly a 3D Platformer, though it plays very differently from other Mario franchise titles, mainly due to this game’s use of stage-specific costumes with context-sensitive abilities. The result is a game that’s varied and enjoyable, but also very shallow. This isn’t a great game, but it should be enough to satisfy fans of Mario’s favorite princess who have waited decades for her to star in her own game. | |||
| Puyo Puyo Champions | Match-4 Falling Block Puzzle | B | |
tl;drPuyo Puyo Champions is a Match-4 Falling Block Puzzle game in the long-running series that includes both Puyo Puyo 2 and Puyo Puyo Fever game modes. There’s an uneven selection of features, and there’s not much here for gamers who already own Puyo Puyo Tetris, but this is a solid Puzzle game, regardless. | |||
| Q-YO Blaster | Bullet Hell Shmup | B | |
tl;drQ-YO Blaster is a Bullet Hell Shmup. It’s a decent game that plays well, but the most memorable thing about it are its absurd heroes and oddball bug-themed enemies. Definitely a solid pick for fans of the genre. | |||
| Rubber Bandits | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drRubber Bandits is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players fighting one another as goofy bandits with rubbery appendages. The sloppy gameplay is both good and bad, but the excellent variety in levels and game modes make this a great game to bring out at parties. Just don’t expect to get the same experience from the game’s online play. | |||
| Rytmos | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drRytmos is a family-friendly Puzzle game with a heavy musical component, though it isn’t a Music-Rhythm game. Rather, this game gives players a stylish take on the classic sliding block puzzle, but one with clever puzzle design that combines with this game’s museum-like tour of different worldwide musical instruments and genres, resulting in an enjoyable Puzzle game that musically-inclined fans in particular will likely find appealing. | |||
| Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle | Collectable Card Game | B | |
tl;drShadowverse: Champion’s Battle is a family-friendly Collectable Card Game presented in a way comparable to a JRPG, complete with anime-style characters and story exclusive to this version of the game. If you’re a fan of Collectable Card Games, you should definitely give this game a look. | |||
| Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley | Top-Down Action-RPG | B | |
tl;drSnufkin is a family-friendly Top-Down Action-RPG featuring the characters and world of the Moomins franchise, giving players a brief little adventure filled with lovable characters. This game isn’t very long or deep, but it is charming and filled with variety. If that sounds appealing to you, this game may be worth a look. | |||
| Sokobond | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drSokobond is a family-friendly Puzzle Game where players push around blocks representing atomic elements with the goal of joining them all together to form a molecule. Don’t worry if your science is rusty, the gameplay here is simple and easy to pick up, but Sokobond does clever things with that simple and elegant concept. It’s nothing revolutionary, and the presentation is in no way impressive, but this game is nevertheless a superb Puzzle Game that fans of the genre should absolutely play. | |||
| Solas 128 | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drSolas 128 is a Family-Friendly Puzzle Game of the “using mirrors to redirect beams of light” variety. This game stands out a bit more than the average game of its kind with a catchy music-infused presentation, but otherwise it’s not doing anything too out of the norm for the genre. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, this game is worth a look. | |||
| Sonic Origins | Compilation / Platformer | B | |
tl;drSonic Origins is a Compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. All versions of the included games here are arguably the best versions of these games ever made, and this Compilation includes a pretty healthy selection of extra features too. Unfortunately, the price tag is outrageous, the multiple versions of Sonic Origins and the microtransactions are sleazy, and the fact that the target audience already owns half of these games on Nintendo Switch makes its value even more suspect. What’s here is very good, but these questions of value really harm this otherwise great Compilation. | |||
| Spark the Electric Jester 3 | 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drSpark the Electric Jester 3 is a 3D Platformer that’s blatantly copying the formula of 3D games in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, but it largely does a good job of it, even if the game absolutely feels like an unoriginal knockoff and a few of its original ideas fall flat. It also suffers from performance issues on Nintendo Switch. Yet despite all of this, the core is a very good 3D Platformer, and even if it doesn’t beat Sonic at his own game, Sonic fans are still going to thoroughly enjoy this. | |||
| Sparkle Unleashed | Match-3 Puzzle | B | |
tl;drSparkle Unleashed is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle in the style of genre classic Zuma, and it is mostly an excellent take on the formula, with a wonderful presentation and some nice RPG-style mechanics. Unfortunately, its lack of scores limits replay value, as does the lack of multiplayer. However, it is nevertheless one of the best games in this style to grace Nintendo Switch, and well worth picking up for any Puzzle fan. | |||
| SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake | 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drSpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a 3D Platformer that is a direct sequel to 2020’s remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom, and it improves on many of that game’s issues, making for an all-around solid game, though not one that does anything new or out of the norm for the genre. Still, if you’re a 3D Platformer fan or especially a SpongeBob fan, this is definitely a game you’ll want to get your hands on. | |||
| Sumire | Graphic Adventure | B | |
tl;drSumire is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure about a young girl who joins a magical flower on a quest to have the perfect day so she can see her late grandmother again. The seemingly silly and childish story is told in a somewhat abstract manner that conceals hidden depths, and while the Graphic Adventure elements are a mixed bag, the presentation here is so gorgeous that fans of the genre should definitely consider giving the game a look. | |||
| Super Crazy Rhythm Castle | Music-Rhythm / Party Game | B | |
tl;drSuper Crazy Rhythm Castle is a game that combines family-friendly Music-Rhythm gameplay with a variety of wacky and unpredictable Party Game elements to create something that aims to subvert the norms of the genre. The creativity and unpredictable nature of the game is delightful, but while it often creates fantastic gameplay, it also frequently becomes tedious or annoying, especially if you wanted to play a more traditional Music-Rhythm game. As such, this game won’t be for everyone, but those looking for something different will likely get a kick out of it. | |||
| Tempopo | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drTempopo is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has you placing commands for the titular walking flower creatures, the tempopo, to follow, with the goal of getting them to bring every flower in each of the game’s levels to that level’s exit. It’s a solid Puzzle game, though a bit limited because it doesn’t give players the freedom to find their own solutions. However, the outstanding presentation with beautiful animation and wonderful music really help to elevate this and make it a solid Puzzle game that’s well worth trying out. | |||
| The Big Journey | Platformer | B | |
tl;drThe Big Journey is a family-friendly Platformer with gameaply and a presentation that seem directly inspired by Loco Roco. And while this game doesn’t quite match Loco Roco’s creativity, it is nevertheless an absolute delight that’s worth seeking out if you’re a fan of that franchise, or if you’re looking for an easier Platformer for younger players. | |||
| The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | B | |
tl;drThe LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers. This entry in the franchise makes some strong additions to the combat that really bring this game into its own, making it one of the better games in the LEGO franchise, though not so different from prior games that it’s likely to attract those who grew sick of the series prior to this. | |||
| Vinebound: Tangled Together | Arcade / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drVinebound is a family-friendly Arcade-style Roguelike in roughly the same style as Vampire Survivors, but with a focus on co-op play. These co-op elements are well-crafted and really help to set the game apart from others in the genre, and while I do think the game is a tad content-poor and the single-player gameplay seems like an afterthought, this is well worth getting for players looking for a solid co-op experience, especially with this game only setting you back $5. | |||
| Words With Freds | Puzzle | B | |
tl;drWords With Freds is a $1 Puzzle Game that plays like a cross between Hangman and Mastermind, and while it’s a simple game, it’s surprisingly compelling and has a fair amount of presentation options. If you’re craving an inexpensive word Puzzle game, this will be a great choice. | |||
| Yooka-Laylee | 3D Platformer | B | |
tl;drYooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer that deliberately follows in the footsteps of the classic Banjo-Kazooie, and it definitely still has that same sort of magic, even if it’s a formula that feels like it’s aged poorly in some areas, and some of the changes made to it here are a mixed bag. | |||
| Zumania – Magic Casual Puzzle | Match-3 Puzzle | B | |
tl;drZumania is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle game that’s clearly a knockoff of Zuma, but it’s a good knockoff. It has the presentation of a cheap mobile game, but the actual gameplay here is solid. Since Nintendo Switch still doesn’t have an actual port of Zuma, this is the next best thing, and Puzzle game fans would do well to seek it out. | |||
