3D Racing (Arcade)
| Game | Genre | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Burnout Paradise Remastered | Open-World Arcade Racing | A- |
tl;drBurnout Paradise Remastered is a solid port to the Nintendo Switch of an excellent Open-World Arcade-style Racing Game, though the game does show its age somewhat, and the open-world elements detract from some elements of the series like the crash mode and multiplayer. At its new price point of $30, it’s still more expensive than other versions of the game, but this price tag is far more palatable, and Burnout Paradise is such a fantastic racing game that Nintendo Switch racing fans should consider it a must-have. | ||
| Asphalt 9: Legends | Arcade Racing | B+ |
tl;drAsphalt 9: Legends is a Free-To-Play Arcade Racer that’s bogged down by all sorts of nasty microtransactions, which is a shame because the game underneath all of that is one of the best racing games on the Switch. I’d argue that the microtransactions can be worked around, and since the game is free to play, you should definitely at least give it a try – on balance, I’d argue that the game is definitely worth the hassle. | ||
| Cruis’n Blast | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drCruis’n Blast is a family-friendly Arcade-style Racing game that plays like a roller coaster ride, with every second of gameplay packed with thrills and eye-popping sights to see, but with extremely shallow gameplay. This is still a magnificently fun experience to play, and perhaps the perfect game for younger racing game fans, but not everyone will appreciate this game’s dedication to magnificent spectacle above all else. | ||
| Horizon Chase 2 | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drHorizon Chase 2 is an Arcade-style Racing game that once again aims to capture the spirit of classic games in the genre like Out Run, and this time around the game drops some of the frustrating elements from its predecessor to make for a polished, well-crafted experience that plays well, but doesn’t do much to distinguish itself or leave much of a lasting impression. Still, if you’re craving old-school Arcade racing fun, I do not think this game will disappoint. | ||
| Hot Wheels Unleashed | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drHot Wheels Unleashed is an Arcade-style racing game featuring cars and tracks based on the well-known toy franchise. The game is content-poor, includes some concerning monetization, and the track builder is frustratingly difficult to work with, but the core racing gameplay is fun, and both online and local multiplayer are excellent. If you’re looking to add a fun, fast-paced racer to your Nintendo Switch collection, this is a good choice. | ||
| Hotshot Racing | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drHotshot Racing is a retro-styled Arcade Racer that’s designed to evoke classics like Daytona USA, and it largely succeeds, with excellent gameplay and wonderful multiplayer play. Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent nostalgia piece is harmed by a lack of variety in its tracks, as well as some atrocious rubber-banding. It’s still fun, but these flaws keep it from true retro greatness. | ||
| New Star GP | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drNew Star GP is a Racing game that combines Arcade-style gameplay with Simulation-style elements like managing a racing team and using pit stops during a race. The retro 3D look with smooth framerates combines with wonderful controls and some inspired use of a few Simulation-style elements to make this game a wonderful mix of new and old, Arcade and Sim. I wish there were more variety in courses, and the multiplayer options are depressingly slim, but overall this is a superb Racing game. | ||
| Wreckfest | Arcade Racing | B |
tl;drWreckfest is an Arcade-style Racing game with a focus on destruction, whether it’s fending off aggressive racers in more traditional races, or aiming to smash the competition in destruction derby. The game looks fantastic on Switch, though the framerates can noticeably take a hit at times. Also, the game only supports multiplayer if you take it online, and you won’t find many players there if you do. Still, despite its flaws, this is a superb racing game well worth adding to your collection. | ||
| Horizon Chase Turbo | Arcade Racing | B- |
tl;drHorizon Chase Turbo is a modernization of classic arcade-style Racing games like Outrun, and it delivers a fantastic modern retro experience that does justice to those old classics. That said, it retains much of the gameplay of those old games as well, and that gameplay hasn’t aged as well as the nostalgia surrounding these games. | ||
| Hot Lap League: Deluxe Edition | Arcade Racing | B- |
tl;drHot Lap League is an Arcade-style Racing game where players race on crazy twisting, looping, gravity-defying tracks while trying to shave every millisecond you can off of your time. This game looks and sounds fantastic, but it’s overpriced compared to other versions, and lacking multiple features you’d expect from this sort of game. Case in point: This is essentially a single-player only game that you need to be online to play. Now, while this game may have some reason to force that requirement on players, all of the compromises and limitations will be enough to drive most players away to a version of this game on another platform, or to one of multiple other better options for Arcade-style Racing games on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered | Arcade Racing | B- |
tl;drNeed For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered is an HD remaster of the 2010 Arcade Racing game that has you playing as either a street racer or a cop hunting the others down. This game looks good, plays well, and has good online play, but is lacking depth and variety in its content, and has no local multiplayer play. Still, if you’re looking for fast-paced racing on the Nintendo Switch, this is well worth checking out. | ||
| Sega Ages Virtua Racing | Arcade Racing | B- |
tl;drSega Ages Virtua Racing gives us the definitive version of the classic Arcade-Style racer, with newly-improved framerates, resolution, and draw distance, and 8-player splitscreen play. It’s still archaic in some ways, but this port has revitalized the game to still be relevant today. | ||
| Adrenaline Rush – Miami Drive | Arcade Racing | C+ |
tl;drAdrenaline Rush – Miami Drive is an Arcade-style Racing game where players speed down an endless highway being chased by cops and trying to avoid obstacles. It’s simple and repetitive, but still fun in short bursts. With its tiny $4 price tag, it’s worth a look if you’re craving a distraction. | ||
| Gear.Club Unlimited | Arcade Racing | C+ |
tl;drGear.Club Unlimited may look like a Simulation-style Racing game, but at its heart it’s an Arcade-style Racing game. This game has its fair share of issues, such as a frustrating interface and lack on true online multiplayer, but the core gameplay is enjoyable, and the low $15 price is enticing enough that Racing fans on a budget may want to give it a try. | ||
| Gear.Club Unlimited 2 | Arcade Racing | C+ |
tl;drGear.Club Unlimited 2 is an Arcade-style Racing game that improves on its predecessor in some ways, but is noticeably worse in others, with ugly graphics, bad load times, and still no actual online multiplayer. This is still an enjoyable Racing game, but it doesn’t have its predecessor’s benefit of being a budget title to make this worth considering over other far better games on Nintendo Switch. You might still want to get this when it gets a good sale, but it’s still disappointing how this game’s creators dropped the ball. | ||
| Offroad Racing – Buggy X ATV X Moto | Arcade Racing | C+ |
tl;drOffroad Racing takes the same basic gameplay (and courses) from ATV Drift and Tricks, adds in two more vehicle types, and improves the visuals. The result is an Arcade-style racing game that’s surprisingly fun, but sadly still lacking multiplayer. However, if you’re looking for an off-road racing game to play on your own, you’ll find this to be a good one. | ||
| Road Redemption | Arcade Racing / Action / Roguelike | C+ |
tl;drRoad Redemption is a modern re-imagining of the classic game Road Rash, with players racing a motorcycle down a freeway and fighting off other bikers along the way. It’s a unique formula that’s made even better with modern visuals and Roguelike elements, but the way players are asked to multitask racing and fighting feels like it’s far too demanding for most players. As a result, this game is sure to have its appeal, but only to the narrow target audience of players who can manage this game’s balancing act. | ||
| ATV Drift & Tricks | Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drATV Drift & Tricks is an Arcade-Style ATV Racing game with a unique trick-boost system. The core gameplay here is fantastic, and I love the track design, but the short campaign, lack of multiplayer, and awful graphics result in a game that fails to live up to its potential. | ||
| Formula Bit Racing DX | Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drFormula Bit Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game that’s fairly decent, but it lacks content, options, and multiplayer. Some of this can be forgiven due to the low $5 price, but even so this is far from a noteworthy or memorable entry in the genre. | ||
| Moto Rush GT | Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drMoto Rush GT is a fast-paced Arcade Racing game that has players tilting their controller to steer their motorcycle through traffic at high speeds. The motion controls actually work very well, and the fast pace of the game can be really thrilling, but that thrill dies down as the repetitive nature of the game sets in. As a result, this is a fun distraction, but not one you’ll likely play for long. | ||
| Neon Drive | Music-Rhythm / Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drNeon Drive is a Music-Rhythm game with Arcade Racing elements that has players driving a car on an abstract 80s-inspired freeway avoiding obstacles. The presentation here is phenomenal, with stunning neon-soaked visuals and a delightful electronica soundtrack. Unfortunately, the difficulty curve spikes so hard and so early that only the most skilled and masochistic Music-Rhythm players will enjoy it. If you love the 80s aesthetic and enjoy an intense challenge, this game is a must-have for you. Otherwise, you’re better off watching videos of the game being played and saving yourself from the frustration. | ||
| Rally Rock ‘N Racing | Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drRally Rock ‘N Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game that’s only partly a rally-style Racing game. This is largely a decent but unspectacular entry in the genre – it’s flawed, but not in any way that outright ruins the game, and the gameplay is okay, but doesn’t really stand out in any way. | ||
| Sega Ages Out Run | Arcade Racing | C |
tl;drOut Run is a classic Arcade-Style Racing game that’s a bit archaic, and absurdly difficult, but still fun to play even today. | ||
| ACA NEOGEO Riding Hero | Faux 3D Motorbike Racing | C- |
tl;drRiding Hero is a Faux 3D Motorbike Racing Game that is a bit more accessible than Faux 3D Racing games tend to be, but it’s still not quite on par with what we’ve come to expect by today’s standards, especially for this game’s $8 price tag. This game may appeal to some players, but most are better off skipping it. | ||
| Buggy Off-Road Racing | Arcade Racing | C- |
tl;drBuggy Off-Road Racing is a family-friendly Arcade-style Racing game that plays well enough and looks decent enough, but is so shallow and lacking in content that you can see everything it has to offer in 15 minutes. Even at its low $5 price, it’s just not worth the bother. | ||
| Neodori Forever | Arcade Racing | C- |
tl;drNeodori Forever is a retro Arcade-style Racing game that aims to imitate classic games in the genre like Sega’s Out Run, complete with simple pixelated 3D visuals. Unfortunately, the controls in this game are pretty terrible, and it’s hard to recommend this game when you have multiple better options on the Nintendo Switch, including Out Run itself. | ||
| Power Racing Bundle | Compilation / Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drPower Racing Bundle is a compilation of Speedway Racing and WildTrax Racing, two Arcade Racing games that have a lot of shared art assets, but also both have some terrible framerate issues and game design flaws. There are a few good points here and there, but overall neither of these games is worth getting. | ||
| Power Racing Bundle 2 | Compilation / Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drPower Racing Bundle 2 is a compilation of Speed Truck Racing and WildTrax Racing, two Arcade Racing games that have a lot of shared art assets, but also both have some terrible framerate issues and game design flaws. There are a few good points here and there, but overall neither of these games is worth getting. | ||
| Power Racing Bundle 3 | Compilation / Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drPower Racing Bundle 3 is a compilation of Speedway Racing, Speed Truck Racing, and WildTrax Racing, three Arcade Racing games that have a lot of shared art assets, but also all have some terrible framerate issues and game design flaws. There are a few good points here and there, but overall none of these games is worth getting, and the bundle does little to change that. | ||
| Speed Truck Racing | Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drSpeed Truck Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game that has players racing trucks on a strange combination of Nascar-style tracks and dirt-covered tracks. This game isn’t without its positive points, and it does make improvements over its predecessor, Speedway Racing, but the core gameplay here is still terribly broken, and this combined with the game’s aggressive checkpoint system sap all the fun out of the experience. | ||
| Speedway Bundle Stock & Truck | Compilation / Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drSpeedway Bundle Stock & Truck is a compilation of Speedway Racing and its direct successor Speed Truck Racing, two Arcade Racing games that have a lot of shared art assets, but also both have some terrible framerate issues and game design flaws. There are a few good points here and there, but overall neither of these games is worth getting. | ||
| Speedway Racing | Arcade Racing | D+ |
tl;drSpeedway Racing is an Arcade Racing game with NASCAR-style racing events. The game mixes some surprisingly good presentation elements with some bad ones and some that are outright bizarre. However, even the good elements here are hard to appreciate with this game’s terrible framerates, bad collision physics, and some really inexplicably awful design choices that make this game an ordeal to play. | ||
| Arcade Archives Pole Position | Faux 3D Racing | D |
tl;drPole Position is a landmark Faux 3D Racing Game that is an important piece of videogame history. It is also a game that plays terribly by today’s standards, and its $8 price tag seems horribly high. Unless you’re a collector and money is no object for you, don’t buy this one. | ||
| Arcade Archives Pole Position II | Faux 3D Racing | D |
tl;drPole Position II is a Faux 3D Racing Game that takes the gameplay of its predecessor and adds four tracks to race on. It is also a game that plays terribly by today’s standards, and its $8 price tag seems horribly high. Even though it’s an improvement over the first game, it’s still not actually good, and I don’t recommend it. | ||
| Pocket Races | Arcade Racing | D |
tl;drPocket Races is an Arcade-style Racing game in the Hot Wheels vein of toy racers that is low-effort asset flip. This game is absolutely loaded with problems, both in its shoddy gameplay and its lacking content. Do not be fooled into buying it at any price. | ||
| Rock ‘N Racing Bundle Off Road & Rally | Compilation / Racing | D |
tl;drRock ‘N Racing Bundle Off Road & Rally is a Compilation of two Racing games, the decent but unspectacular Rally Rock ‘N Racing, and the absolutely terrible Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX, all for the value price of… a penny more than it costs to get the games separately. In other words, don’t bother with this bundle – it’s not worth it. | ||
| WildTrax Racing | Arcade Racing | D |
tl;drWildTrax Racing is an Arcade Racing game where players take 4×4 vehicles out on off-road courses. Unfortunately, the game has a serious lack of content, the single-player gameplay isn’t very compelling, and the multiplayer mode is crippled by horrendous graphical issues. I struggle to see any reason to play this game at all. | ||
| Project Drift Japan Challenge | Arcade Racing | D- |
tl;drProject Drift is an Arcade Racing game that has players in one-on-one races set in Japan, but this game’s visuals are absolutely terrible and its drifting controls are a bad joke. I’d tell you to avoid this game, but since it’s already been removed from the eShop it appears that someone else has taken steps to ensure that you won’t have to. | ||
| Kart Crazy Race Simulator Game | Arcade Racing | F |
tl;drKart Crazy is an Arcade-style Racing game (regardless of what the title says) that fails miserably in every possible way. Horrible physics that strip all fun out of the game, a lack of content, repetitive ugly visuals, no multiplayer, and one terrible song on repeat. Even for $5, this game is absolutely not worth it. Heck, they could give this game away for free and I’d tell you to skip it. Do not waste any amount of money on this game. | ||
| Pocket Circuit | Racing | F |
tl;drPocket Circuit is a Racing Game that plays in a manner similar to Top-Down Racing gams, though it isn’t technically Top-Down. However, this distinction hardly matters because no matter what it is, Pocket Circuit is absolutely terrible. Ugly visuals, annoying sound, bad menu design, bad game design, and controls that try to fight you as you attempt to steer your vehicle. Do not play this terrible Racing Game. | ||
| Xtreme Club Racing | Arcade Racing | F |
tl;drXtreme Club Racing is an Arcade-style Racing game with absolutely terrible graphics, poor controls, and has pretty much no redeeming qualities. Do not get this horrendously awful game. | ||
3D Racing (Futuristic)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Fast RMX | Futuristic Racing | A |
tl;drFast RMX is a futuristic racing game that isn’t quite on par with F-Zero, but it comes damn close. It looks absolutely fantastic at blazing speeds, plays well, and although it has a few minor issues, it’s still a spectacular game that every racing game fan with a Switch should own. | ||
| Riptide GP Renegade | Futuristic Racing | A- |
tl;drRiptide GP: Renegade is a futuristic racing game that’s like someone took F-Zero, Wave Race, SSX, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and threw them into a blender. The result is an intense high-speed racing game that, while light on the number of tracks it offers, is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, well worth getting. | ||
| F-Zero 99 | Futuristic Racing | B- |
tl;drF-Zero 99 is a fun take on the Futuristic Racing series that takes inspiration from the original Super Nintendo game, but expands on it by having 99 online players racing against each other on the same track. It’s extremely frenetic, and the crowded tracks can make for some frustration, but it’s also pretty fun and unique. Plus, since it is available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, anyone who enjoys Racing games and already pays for the service would do well to give this game a try. | ||
| Overlanders | Futuristic Racing | B- |
tl;drOverlanders is a futuristic racing game that plays a bit like the Star Wars: Podracer series. The core gameplay here is good, with an inspired “Monster Hunt” mode that does something refreshingly new for the genre. unfortunately, the game has a serious lack of polish, and the lacking multiplayer options really hurt this game’s longevity. | ||
| Redout | Futuristic Racing | B- |
tl;drRedout is a futuristic racing game like F-Zero and Wipeout with solid high-speed racing. Unfortunately, the transition from other platforms to the Switch stripped this game of local multiplayer, dropped the visuals and framerate, and left an overly-difficult racing game that pales in comparison to Fast RMX. It’s still a decent racing game, but it’s hard to recommend given the circumstances. | ||
| Star Wars Episode I Racer | Futuristic Racing | C+ |
tl;drStar Wars Episode I Racer is a port (not a remake) of the classic N64 podracing game, although taking off the nostalgia goggles reveals a racing game that’s visually ugly by today’s standards and doesn’t have too much going on in the gameplay department to set it apart. It’s decent, but not the great racing game many remember. | ||
| #RaceDieRun | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;dr#RaceDieRun is a Futuristic Racing game with slick graphics that has you racing against the clock… and dying many, many, many times as you attempt to speed through its levels. This is a grueling, punishing game, and only the most patient of racing game fans will enjoy it. | ||
| Flashout 3 | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;drFlashout 3 is a Futuristic Racing game that suffers from ugly visuals, a terrible sense of speed, and tedious combat. While not an absolutely horrible game, it’s so terribly lacking in so many areas that I can’t imagine why anyone would play this over the multiple better options on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Future Aero Racing S Ultra | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;drFuture Aero Racing S Ultra is a Futuristic Racing game. The game has a great feeling of speed, but otherwise the graphics are pretty bad, the controls aren’t great, and the game is absurdly difficult to the point of just not being all that fun. Even for the low $7 price, this game just isn’t worth it. | ||
| Mercury Race | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;drMercury Race is a futuristic racing game where players must aim and shoot at obstacles in the way as they race. It’s not without its bad qualities, but in far too many ways the game just feels unfinished. | ||
| Smugglecraft | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;drSmuggleCraft is a futuristic racing game that gets the core racing down, but not much else. And since the Switch has Fast RMX, there doesn’t seem much reason to get this game. | ||
| Space Ribbon | Futuristic Racing | C- |
tl;drSpace Ribbon is a futuristic racing game where you’re racing generic cars in space on a track spewed out by a giant animal head. It’s… um, unique, but a lot of the original elements here are flawed and the game just doesn’t come together as a whole. | ||
| Orbitblazers | Futuristic Racing / Auto-Runner | D |
tl;drOrbitblazers is a Futuristic Racing Game that plays more like an Auto-Runner, and while it delivers a clean presentation with a great sense of speed, it’s lacking in multiple areas, the worst being its unresponsive controls. The result is a game that’s not worth playing. | ||
| Party Crashers | Futuristic Racing / Party Game | F |
tl;drParty Crashers is a Racing/Party Game with a great look, a ton of options, and procedurally-generated maps. It is also damn near unplayable, with a horrible camera and menus that just seem broken. | ||
3D Racing (Kart Racing)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Kart Racer | A++ |
tl;drMario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just a Kart Racing game, it is the Kart Racing game, removing the few flaws the Wii U version had and adding even more content to an already content-rich game, making this arguably the best-playing, best-looking and all-around best period when it comes to this type of racing game. If you have a Switch, get this game. | ||
| Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled | Kart Racer | B- |
tl;drCrash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled takes the PSOne classic Kart Racer and brings it into the modern day with expanded content and absolutely gorgeous visuals. It’s just a shame that this game is so infuriatingly hard to play that most players won’t be able to enjoy it. | ||
| Disney Speedstorm | Kart Racing | B- |
tl;drDisney Speedstorm is a free-to-play Kart Racing game featuring high-tech races with courses and racers inspired by classic Disney franchises. I have some issues with the microtransactions here, the lack of courses, the rubber-banding, and the Nintendo Switch version definitely suffers a graphical downgrade from other versions of the game… but despite those numerous flaws, this is still a wonderfully fun, fast-paced racing game with an outstanding presentation and a great soundtrack. As long as you can tolerate this game’s flaws, I think you’ll find it to be a great addition to your Racing game collection. | ||
| Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit | Kart Racing / Hardware | B- |
tl;drMario Kart Live takes Nintendo’s classic Kart Racer series into the world of AR games with an actual physical RC car that interacts with the game on Nintendo Switch using a camera. It’s a wonderful and unique experience, but one that comes with a lot of requirements, has a fair number of flaws, and has a pretty high expense. If you don’t mind these issues, this is something truly unlike anything else out there, and it is definitely fun, but be warned that this fun does come with a hefty number of issues too. | ||
| Team Sonic Racing | Kart Racer | B- |
tl;drTeam Sonic Racing is a Kart Racer with a focus on its team dynamics, and it’s a solid entry in the genre. However, it’s not without its flaws, and it is largely overshadowed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is simply an all-around better game. If you want a second kart racer though, Team Sonic Racing is a good choice. | ||
| Beach Buggy Racing | Kart Racing | C+ |
tl;drBeach Buggy Racing is a family-friendly Kart Racing game that’s pretty generic, but still does the basics of the genre fairly well. It is absolutely not going to be a replacement for Mario Kart, but it is a sufficient budget-priced alternative. | ||
| Chocobo GP | Kart Racing | C+ |
tl;drChocobo GP is a Kart Racing game that has players controlling various chibi-esque Final Fantasy characters on colorful race tracks. The visuals and core gameplay here is excellent, but the volatile nature of the races, the terrible controls, and the absurd microtransactions really sour the experience, and the childish presentation isn’t likely to appeal to most players either. This isn’t a terrible game, but it’s hard to recommend when there are multiple better choices. | ||
| Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure | Kart Racing | C |
tl;drBeach Buggy Racing 2 is a family-friendly Kart Racing game that more or less has all the same good and bad qualities as the first game, at twice the price. And at $20, it’s harder to forgive the lack of depth or overall generic presentation, especially when this game is on a platform with so many better alternatives. | ||
| Formula Legends | Kart Racing | C- |
tl;drFormula Legends is a Simulation-style Racing game that optionally simulates multiple ways your vehicle can act up, but the core racing gameplay doesn’t feel responsive enough for how demanding this game is, and the graphics are pretty poor for a game that’s attempting to be realistic. But more than this, this game simply isn’t very fun to play, with poor controls and a poor sense of speed. Get your racing thrills elsewhere, because this is just going to disappoint. | ||
| Retro Kart Rush | Kart Racer | D+ |
tl;drRetro Kart Rush is a Kart Racer that imitates the style of the classic Super Nintendo entry in the Mario Kart series. Unfortunately, this game suffers from nasty slowdown issues, as well as some atrocious rubber-banding. As a result, there’s just no reason to play this game instead of one of the Mario Kart games already available on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Go Kart Mania | Kart Racing | D |
tl;drGo Kart Mania is a Kart Racing game with no depth, no personality, and no multiplayer. And with so many better options in the genre on Nintendo Switch, there is no reason to play it. | ||
3D Racing (Simulation)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| GRID Autosport | Racing Simulation | B+ |
tl;drGRID Autosport is a port of a 2014 Racing Sim that improves the graphics over the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, as well as adding a huge variety of options and different ways to play. This was already a solid Racing Sim before, and the improvements almost make this the definitive version, although the lack of analog triggers on most Nintendo Switch controllers are one noteworthy flaw (though one you can address with a GameCube controller if you have the adapter). Otherwise, this is an all-around excellent Racing Sim, and currently the best game in the genre on the Switch, a deserving honor even if there’s not much competition for that honor right now. | ||
| Rush Rally 3 | Rally Racing | B- |
tl;drRush Rally 3 is a Rally Racing game that is a solid entry in the genre that manages to rise above its value pricing and mobile-centric development to be worthy of competing with games from bigger developers. The graphics could do with brushing up in some areas, the lack of multiplayer options is unfortunate, and the menus are terrible, but despite these flaws, this is a game that is nevertheless an excellent entry in the genre. | ||
| WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship | Rally Racing | C+ |
tl;drWRC 8 is a Rally Racing Simulation-style game where players manage their crew and schedule and race in various conditions. The core game here is a solid but highly challenging entry in the genre, but it has clearly suffered massive downgrades in its transition to the Nintendo Switch, particularly in its graphical fidelity and clarity. If you’re a fan of this genre and Nintendo Switch is your only gaming platform you will still likely find this to be sufficient, but if you wan play it on any other platform you should absolutely do that instead. | ||
| WRC 9 The Official Game | Rally Racing | C+ |
tl;drWRC 9, like its predecessor, is a Rally Racing Simulation-style game where players manage their crew and schedule and race in various conditions. The core game here is a solid but highly challenging entry in the genre, but it has clearly suffered massive downgrades in its transition to the Nintendo Switch, particularly in its graphical fidelity and clarity, and the changes and improvements from WRC 8 seem minimal. Overall, this is still a decent game, but its appeal is limited and those who enjoy this niche genre are better off playing this game on any other platform. | ||
| WRC Generations | Rally Racing | C+ |
tl;drWRC Generations, like its predecessors, is a Rally Racing Simulation-style game where players manage their crew and schedule and race in various conditions. The core game here is a solid but highly challenging entry in the genre, but the game has still clearly suffered massive downgrades in its transition to the Nintendo Switch, particularly with the absurd amounts of pop-in the game suffers from. Overall, this is still a decent game, and overall I think this is the best game in the series on Nintendo Switch so far, but its appeal is limited and those who enjoy this niche genre are better off playing this game on any other platform. | ||
| NASCAR Heat Ultimate Edition+ | Racing Simulation | C |
tl;drNASCAR Heat Ultimate Edition+ is a Racing Simulation that is neither an exceptional version of the event nor is it a terrible one. NASCAR fans are likely to find what they’re looking for here, but probably not much more than that. And Non-NASCAR fans aren’t likely to have their minds changed by this game. | ||
| Formula Legends | Racing Simulation | C- |
tl;drFormula Legends is a Simulation-style Racing game that optionally simulates multiple ways your vehicle can act up, but the core racing gameplay doesn’t feel responsive enough for how demanding this game is, and the graphics are pretty poor for a game that’s attempting to be realistic. But more than this, this game simply isn’t very fun to play, with poor controls and a poor sense of speed. Get your racing thrills elsewhere, because this is just going to disappoint. | ||
| WRC 10 FIA World Rally Championship | Rally Racing | C- |
tl;drWRC 10, like its predecessors, is a Rally Racing Simulation-style game where players manage their crew and schedule and race in various conditions. The core game here is a solid but highly challenging entry in the genre, but it has clearly suffered massive downgrades in its transition to the Nintendo Switch, and seems even worse off than the prior game in the series, with little to nothing in the way of improvements. Skip this one. | ||
| WRC Collection (8, 9, & 10) | Compilation / Rally Racing | D+ |
tl;drWRC Collection (8, 9, & 10) is a Compilation containing the three named Rally Racing games. These are already a somewhat niche sort of game, and they are so similar that the average player would have difficulty telling them apart. However, they’re made worse by terrible ports to Nintendo Switch, and a bundle that’s absurdly overpriced given what’s on offer. You don’t need three of these bad ports, most Nintendo Switch players don’t even need one. Don’t waste your money on this bundle. | ||
3D Racing (Biking / Motorbike Simulation)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Descenders | Offroad Bike Racing / Extreme Sports (Offroad Biking) | B |
tl;drDescenders is an Offroad Bike Racing game with Extreme Sports elements that has players speeding through randomly-generated environments and performing tricks, with gameplay that incorporates Roguelike elements to challenge the player to push themselves without taking too many risks. It’s a fantastic game, but the Nintendo Switch version has visuals that are heavily crippled in numerous ways. This version is still playable, but if you can get this game on any other platform, I recommend doing that instead. | ||
| Lonely Mountains: Downhill | Isometric Bike Racing | B |
tl;drLonely Mountains: Downhill is a difficult Bike Racing game with a fixed isometric viewpoint that challenges players to race down treacherous terrain without crashing. This game has a great aesthetic that really makes these off-road areas quite beautiful in their simplicity, and there’s some good open-ended gameplay here, but far too often the game shackles the player to doing what it wants the player to do rather than freeing them to blaze their own trail. The result is a game that’s still fun, but frustrating because it could have been much better. | ||
| Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 2 | Motorbike Racing | B- |
tl;drMonster Energy Supercross 2 is a motorbike racing game with surprisingly deep mechanics and a really good feature set, but it’s let down by poor, muddy graphics and glitchy sound problems. | ||
| Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 3 | Motorbike Racing | B- |
tl;drMonster Energy Supercross 3 is a motorbike Racing simulation that is a marked improvement over its predecessor, with much-improved visuals and expanded features. Unfortunately, it’s still lacking local multiplayer, and the terrible tutorial will do little to prepare more casual players for the game’s simulation-style approach to the genre. It’s still on the whole a solid Racing game, but as the Nintendo Switch continues to get more quality Racing games in its library, this series is starting to feel like it’s behind the curve. | ||
| MotoGP 20 | Motorcycle Racing | B- |
tl;drMotoGP 20 is a Motorcycle Racing Simulation, and there’s a heavy emphasis on the “Simulation” – this game provides players with a lot of assistance options, but even playing with what amounts to training wheels still makes for an extremely challenging game that won’t be something most players will enjoy. What’s more, the multiplayer options here are pathetic, so expect to only play this game solo. Having said that, the graphics here are very good, and if you really are looking for a simulation-style game to play solo, this game does that very, very well. | ||
| MotoGP 21 | Motorcycle Racing | C+ |
tl;drMotoGP 21 is yet another excellent Motorcycle Racing Simulation for fans of the series… and an absolutely miserable “Falling Off Your Bike Simulator” for everyone else. The grade I give this game doesn’t even really matter – either this is your sorta’ game, in which case it’s perfect, or it’s not, in which case it’s a nightmarish exercise in frustration. However, even those who think it’s perfect will have to admit the changes in this entry are relatively minor, the visuals are less impressive than last year’s, and the lack of significant multiplayer options is still disappointing. | ||
| Motorbikes Pro 2025 | Motorbike Racing | C+ |
tl;drMotorbikes Pro 2025 is a very simple Arcade-style Motorcycle Racing game, and it’s lacking content and multiplayer. Yet despite these flaws, this is still an enjoyable entry in the genre. Just don’t buy this at full price – it may be worth getting when it goes on sale, but not for the standard $13 price it normally sells for. | ||
| TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 | Motorcycle Racing | C+ |
tl;drTT 3 is a Simulation-style Motorcycle Racing Game that’s extremely niche and not accessible to newcomers due to its difficult and unforgiving gameplay, but for those who enjoy the series this is clearly the best entry yet, with an ambitious open-ended world design, improved load times, and more reasonable pricing on Nintendo Switch. If you’re not a fan of this genre, this game won’t change that. But if these games appeal to you, you may find this is worth a look. | ||
| TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2 | Motorcycle Racing | C |
tl;drTT 2 is a Simulation-style Motorcycle Racing Game that’s extremely niche and not accessible to newcomers due to its difficult and unforgiving gameplay, but at the very least this release greatly improves on the horrible visuals that plagued the first game, though this still isn’t especially great. Overall, this is a game that may appeal to fans of this specific genre, but everyone else is best off leaving this alone. | ||
| TT Collection | Compilation / Motorcycle Racing | C |
tl;drTT Collection is a Compilation containing the first three games in the TT Isle of Man series of Simulation-style Motorcycle Racing games. These games are extremely niche and punishing in a way that most players won’t enjoy, the series isn’t as polished as the MotoGP games, and as a bundle the savings here is moderate at best. A select few players may find this bundle worth getting, but the overwhelming majority of players are better off skipping it. | ||
| MXGP3 – The Official Motocross Videogame | Motorbike Racing | C- |
tl;drMXGP3 is a motorbike racing game that looks terrible, doesn’t play especially well, and has had all sorts of features stripped out of it from other versions of the game, including multiplayer. If you want motorbike racing on the Switch, you have better options. | ||
| Extreme Bike X | Motorbike Racing | D+ |
tl;drExtreme Bike X is a Motorbike Racing game with extremely ugly, dated visuals and extremely simple, boring gameplay. Even the low $7 price tag seems far too overpriced for this. | ||
| TT Isle of Man | Motorcycle Racing | D+ |
tl;drTT Isle of Man is a Simulation-style Motorcycle Racing Game that’s already extremely niche and not accessible to newcomers due to its difficult and unforgiving gameplay, but then makes things worse with blurry, muddy visuals on Nintendo Switch that make the game even harder to play. The result is an absolute mess that only the most dedicated fans of the genre on Nintendo Switch will want to mess with. | ||
| RMX Real Motocross | Motorbike Racing | D |
tl;drRMX Real Motocross is an inexpensive off-road Motorbike Racing game that lacks any sort of nuance, has broken physics, and has no multiplayer. Skip it. | ||
| Dirt Bike Insanity | Motorbike Racing | D- |
tl;drDirt Bike Insanity is a Motorbike Racing game that gets nearly nothing right. Laughably bad visuals, terrible controls, and boring gameplay that lacks any sort of nuance. And despite this, the game is still normally priced at $8 and takes up over 2GB of space. Trust me – it’s not worth your time, money, or the memory it would take to house this game on your Nintendo Switch. Skip it. | ||
| Offroad Masters: Motocross Races | Motorbike Racing | F |
tl;drOffroad Masters is an offroad Motorbike Racing game, albeit one that finds astounding new ways to be absolutely terrible, from the eye-wateringly bad graphics to the ridiculous unplayable gameplay. My jaw literally dropped while playing this at the sheer audacity that anyone would expect players to pay for this. Please, don’t. | ||
3D Racing (Misc.)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Faaast Penguin | Racing Game / 3D Platformer | B |
tl;drFaaast Penguin is a family-friendly free-to-play online-only multiplayer-focused Racing Game with 3D Platformer elements that has players sliding down courses as a penguin. The gameplay here is both deep and accessible, with a good sense of speed and frenetic fun, monetization that isn’t overly-burdensome, and the performance on Nintendo Switch is decent. I would have liked more track variety, but overall this is a Racing Game that’s definitely worth downloading and trying out. | ||
| Super Impossible Road | Racing Game | B |
tl;drSuper Impossible Road is a Racing Game that has players racing futuristic-looking balls on narrow pathways suspended in space. This game looks great, plays great, has a fantastic risk/reward element involving jumping off the track as a shortcut, and the multiplayer is excellent too. The standard price seems a tad high for what you’re getting, but this is a must-have when the game goes on sale. | ||
| Aqua Moto Racing Utopia | Watercraft Racing | C+ |
tl;drAqua Moto Racing Utopia is a Jetski Racing game that visually looks good and has a healthy amount of content, but is undone by frustrating control issues and a price tag that’s an insult to Switch owners. This may be worth looking into if you can catch it in a very good sale, but otherwise it isn’t worth your time. | ||
| Mindball Play | Racing | C |
tl;drMindball Play is a Racing game where players try to roll their marble to the finish line first. The visuals in this game are fantastic, but beyond this the game is completely lacking in personality, and the physics are extremely unforgiving. It’s not terrible, but it definitely could have used more work. | ||
| Drone Fight | Racing Flight Sim | C- |
tl;drDrone Fight is a Racing Flight Sim that has players piloting drones in a race through a series of rings. While there was potential here, just about every part of this game suffers from amateurish flaws that leave it not worth bothering with. | ||
| Om Nom: Run 2 | Auto-Runner / Racing | C- |
tl;drOm Nom: Run 2 is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner starring the little green creature from the Cut the Rope series. This game adds a lot more variety over the first game, but forces you into three-round races making for required repetition against cheating AI opponents. This largely outweighs all the improvements this game features, and makes this game an overall worse experience. | ||
| Tray Racers! | Racing Game | C- |
tl;drTray Racers! is a free-to-play downhill Racing Game where players sled down a desert landscape in a colorful post-apocalyptic setting. While not a bad Racing game, this game does have some control issues, problems with having to constantly wait before you can actually get to the racing, and an overall lack of polish that make this far less enjoyable than it could’ve been. Since it’s free, players may want to give it a try, but with all the frustrations present I suspect that most will move on to other, better games soon enough. | ||
| Aquapark io | Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drAquapark io is a Racing Game where in theory players race on a long, twisty water slide to get to the pool at the bottom, but in reality most will end up jumping off the sides to take the more direct route and fall there instead. However, no matter which way you play the game, it’s frustrating, controls poorly, features ugly and at times broken graphics, and has rubber-banding so bad I’m not even sure it qualifies as rubber-banding anymore instead of just straight-up cheating. There are a few real moments of joy to be found here, but for the most part this is a ride that should be condemned for its severe safety violations… and I’m not talking about how you can jump off of the slides. | ||
| Jet Ski Mania Aqua Rush | Watercraft Racing | D |
tl;drJet Ski Mania is a Watercraft Racing game that appears to be infringing on a trademark with its name, features a Nintendo.com page with screenshots that look nothing like the actual game, has all sorts of graphical and presentation issues, and features dull, simple gameplay that provides absolutely no challenge whatsoever. Even with so few options for Watercraft Racing games on Nintendo Switch, you have better alternatives than this. | ||
| Snow Moto Racing Freedom | Snowmobile Racing | D- |
tl;drSnow Moto Racing Freedom is a Snowmobile Racing game that has players doing stunts to fuel a boost meter, with some races in open areas that require going through gates, while others are on a closed track. It’s mostly pretty average, other than the fact that the framerates in this game are some of the worst I’ve seen in any game on the Switch. And the price gouging in the Nintendo Switch version is simply inexcusable. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. | ||
2D Stunt Racing
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| FutureGrind | Futuristic 2D Stunt Racing | B+ |
tl;drFutureGrind is a Futuristic 2D Stunt Racing game where you race a futuristic vehicle on a series of rails, matching the rails you ride to the color of the wheel. It’s a wonderful concept that’s fun to play. I just wish there were more options here. | ||
| Draw Rider Remake | 2D Stunt Racing | B |
tl;drDraw Rider Remake is a 2D Stunt Racing game that’s extremely tough and features low-quality visuals, but it is nevertheless surprisingly compelling. This is not a game for everyone, and even those who enjoy it will find it suffers from a few frustrating issues, but overall this is a must-play for anyone who enjoys this sort of game and doesn’t mind a challenge. | ||
| Trials Rising | 2D Stunt Racing | B |
tl;drTrials Rising is a 2D Stunt Racing game where you race a motorcycle on an obstacle course. The game really pushes microtransactions at you, and is clearly inferior to other versions of the game, but it still offers solid experience with a lot of options for players. | ||
| Gravity Rider Zero | 2D Stunt Racing | B- |
tl;drGravity Rider Zero is a 2D Stunt Racing game in the same vein as the Trials series, with a futuristic look that’s surprisingly slick for its tiny 98MB file size. However, despite this accomplishment, the frustrating track design, poor controls, and terrible sound design wreck the potential this game would have had to be a good low-cost alternative to Trials. | ||
| Urban Trial Playground | 2D Stunt Racing | B- |
tl;drUrban Trial Playground is a 2D Stunt Racing game where you race a motorcycle on an obstacle course. It doesn’t have the microtransactions of Trials Rising, but it’s missing that game’s wealth of features too. It’s still a fun game, but it feels a bit empty by comparison. | ||
| Funtasia | 2D Stunt Racing | C+ |
tl;drFuntasia is a 2D Stunt Racing game with a colorful hand-drawn art style that’s really distinctive, but with gameplay that’s too unforgiving and frustrating. This isn’t a bad game, but you have better options for a game in this genre on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| MX Nitro: Unleashed | 2D Stunt Racing | C+ |
tl;drMX Nitro: Unleashed is a 2D Stunt Racing game that has some good ideas for the genre, but those ideas are overshadowed by an absurdly steep difficulty curve that makes this a game that’s unlikely to appeal to anyone other than the more sadistic fans of this genre. | ||
| Doodle Derby | Racing / Platformer | C |
tl;drDoodle Derby is a side-scrolling Racing game with a hand-drawn look that uses a track-building mechanic to make for some fun and inventive gameplay. Unfortunately, the game is really rough and suffers from a slew of problems, such as various parts of the game not working properly, overly-tough progression, and some really terrible sound. There’s a lot to love here, but the many flaws make loving this game difficult. | ||
| Old School Musical | 2D Stunt Racing | C- |
tl;drOld School Racer 2 is a 2D Stunt Racing that’s loosely similar to the Trials series, and it offers a somewhat unique land deformation mechanic. Unfortunately, this mechanic and other game design issues combine to make this a tedious, frustrating experience where players will repeatedly crash due to circumstances out of their control. Skip this game unless you’re a huge fan of the genre. | ||
| Hero Express | 2D Stunt Racing | D+ |
tl;drHero Express is a 2D Stunt Racing game. The game’s backstory is cute, and the presentation is great, but the gameplay is tedious, frustrating, and artificially difficult. Skip this one. | ||
Top-Down Racing
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Rush Rally Origins | Top-Down Racing | B |
tl;drRush Rally Origins draws from the gameplay and visuals of its predecessor, Rush Rally 3, while taking the game into the Top-Down Racing genre. This is a less-ambitious game than its predecessor, and as such less impressive, but it manages to fix most of the problems of the prior game while retaining the great gameplay and nice visuals. It’s a shame this game still lacks any multiplayer gameplay of note, but despite this flaw, this is still one of the best games this genre has ever seen. If you enjoy the genre, do not miss it. | ||
| Super Arcade Racing | Top-Down Racing | C+ |
tl;drSuper Arcade Racing is a Top-Down Racing game with a wonderful retro aesthetic, and an RPG-style mechanic that had a lot of potential… but unfortunately, that potential is ruined by the game’s refusal to allow players to upgrade their vehicle how they want, instead drip-feeding them upgrades to control their progress. Add in deserted online multiplayer and you have a game that is still a decent old-school Racing game, but in so many ways it feels like it had potential to be something more. | ||
| Super Pixel Racers | Top-Down Racing | C |
tl;drSuper Pixel Racers is a Top-Down Racing game with a retro aesthetic. The presentation is mostly quite good, and there’s a decent amount of content here. Unfortunately, the controls have issues, the online play doesn’t work, and the cars animate poorly in a way that clashes with the rest of the game. In the end, it’s not a terrible game by any means, but it’s definitely one that fails to meet its potential. | ||
| Tiny World Racing | Top-Down Racing | C |
tl;drTiny World Racing is a family-friendly Top-Down Racing game similar to classics like R.C. Pro-Am. It’s simple and unambitious, doing nothing noteworthy for the genre, but it’s got a decent amount of content for its $4 asking price and should make for a little fun with four players, though it’s nothing you’ll want to spend a ton of time with. | ||
| ACA NEOGEO Thrash Rally | Top-Down Racing | C- |
tl;drThrash Rally is a Top-Down Racing Game that has some good visuals and decent controls, but the zoomed-in view makes it too difficult to anticipate upcoming turns and hazards. Players looking for a good game in this genre have better options on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Circuit Superstars | Top-Down Racing | C- |
tl;drCircuit Superstars is a Top-Down Racing Game with a wonderful presentation that makes its races look like toys competing in a scale model race track, but the gameplay feels like a grueling experience of struggling to get the controls to behave how you want, with gameplay mechanics far too interested in simulating realism for a game with such a simplistic look and simple controls. In the end, racing in this game feels more like an ordeal than a fun time, and as such I can’t really recommend it. | ||
| Retro Pixel Racers | Top-Down Racing | C- |
tl;drRetro Pixel Racers is a Top-Down Racing game with a retro aesthetic. The core gameplay here is decent, if a bit on the tough side. However, a terrible lack of content, repetitive visuals and sound, a lack of multiplayer, and bloated price tag all make this a game you should skip. | ||
| Speedway Heroes | Top-Down Motorbike Racing | C- |
tl;drSpeedway Heroes is a Top-Down Motorbike Racing game with a cartoony look and simple controls that are both surprisingly appealing. Unfortunately, this game has a depressing lack of variety in its tracks, and the remnants of annoyances inserted into the game to push microtransactions in other versions still sap away the fun here. | ||
| The Next Penelope | Top-Down Racing | C- |
tl;drThe Next Penelope is a Top-Down Racing Game that has players doing a variety of things using a high-speed vehicle that’s always moving forward. There’s a good amount of variety here, but the difficulty level is absurdly high, and the game feels designed to artificially inflate that challenge level. Unless you’re looking for a punishing Top-Down Racer, this game is not for you. | ||
| Fire Race | Top-Down Racing | D+ |
tl;drFire Race is a Top-Down Racing Game where players control a car with a blazing fire coming out of its rear. Controlling your car can be fun, but in every other way this game is a flaming wreck, with shallow gameplay, lacking difficulty, no multiplayer, and absurdly bad performance issues. Don’t waste your money on this. | ||
| Gotcha Racing 2nd | Top-Down Racing | D+ |
tl;drGotcha Racing 2nd is a Top-Down Racing game that has players constructing their vehicles from parts from a “gacha” machine. Unfortunately, nothing this game does works well – the “gacha” parts aren’t varied enough and are poorly-balanced, the vehicle construction doesn’t provide enough options, the core racing gameplay is lacking, and the AI-controlled racers are mindless. This game has potential to offer something different and enticing, but opening this capsule only leads to disappointment. | ||
| Grand Prix Rock ‘N Racing | Top-Down Racing | D+ |
tl;drGrand Prix Rock ‘N Racing is a Top-Down Racing game that has players racing F1 cars with a visual style that looks a lot like a scale model. While the presentation here is charming, the gameplay is so stiff and unforgiving that it’s hard to enjoy this game. I recommend you skip it and save yourself the trouble. | ||
| Little Racer | Top-Down Slot Car Racing | D |
tl;drLittle Racer seeks to reproduce the fun of competing on a slot racing track, and it has a good sense of style and a lot of content, including a superb track creator. Unfortunately, none of this matters as the gameplay is absolutely horrible, with crash after unavoidable crash making races less about skill and more about who has the patience not to drop the controller and never play this game again. Don’t bother with this one. | ||
| Micro Pico Racers | Top-Down Racing | D |
tl;drMicro Pico Racers is a Top-Down Racing Game with a retro-style look, but terrible controls, absurdly unbalanced AI, poor game design, and a lack of multiplayer all add up to make this an absolutely miserable experience. Do not buy this. | ||
| Offroad Mini Racing | Top-Down Racing | D- |
tl;drOffroad Mini Racing is a Top-Down Racing game with underwhelming visuals, bad controls, messed-up physics, no multiplayer, no track selection… so much about this game is shoddy or broken that I can’t think of any reason why you should bother with it. | ||
| Rock ‘N Racing Bundle Off Road & Grand Prix | Compilation / Top-Down Racing | F |
tl;drRock ‘N Racing Bundle Off Road & Grand Prix is a Compilation of two Top-Down Racing games, both of them terrible, with unwieldy controls that players will struggle with. And to top it off, this bundle presents zero value – it’s actually slightly more expensive than buying both games separately. So save yourself some money and headache, and stay far away from these games. | ||
| Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX | Top-Down Racing | F |
tl;drRock ‘N Racing Off Road DX is a Top-Down Racing game in the same vein as Super Off-Road. Unfortunately, the controls here are broken beyond recognition, making it less a race against other vehicles and more of a struggle with your own vehicle. Do not buy this game. | ||
Driving/Racing (Misc.)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket League | Racing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.) | A |
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Nintendo LABO Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit | Accessory / Minigame Collection / Party Game / Racing / Open World / Misc. | B+ |
tl;drNintendo LABO Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit is a really unique hybrid of a Minigame Collection, an Open-World Exploration game, a Party game, a series of Accessories you create yourself using the included pieces of custom-made cardboard, and a misc. tool you can use to explore the features of the Nintendo Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, this game is much better than the previous two in terms of the actual gameplay content it offers, thanks to its Open-World Adventure mode and its overall more cohesive theme. This is definitely one of the better Nintendo LABO kits. | ||
| Minit Fun Racer | Auto-Runner | B |
tl;drMinit Fun Racer is an old-fashioned Arcade-style Auto-Runner that plays out like an obstacle course with some “Roguelite” elements. You likely won’t get more than an hour or so out of this game, but for the low price of $3 it manages to be enjoyable enough while it lasts to worth the price, and the pledge that all earnings from the game will go to charity makes it that much easier to give it a try. | ||
| Expeditions: A MudRunner Game | Driving Simulation | B- |
tl;drExpeditions is a Simulation-style Driving Game that is a sequel to MudRunner and SnowRunner, and eases up ever so slightly on the series’ punishing gameplay. That said, it’s still a challenging and at times frustrating game, and the lack of SnowRunner’s better-constructed Open-World elements make this a slight step down in my opinion. And as with the prior games, the absolutely beautiful environments are made less so on Nintendo Switch, which gives the game a huge graphical downgrade over other versions. Despite its flaws, this is still an enjoyable game, but it’s not for everyone, and if at all possible you’ll want to play it on another platform. | ||
| REKT! High Octane Stunts | Stunt Driving | B- |
tl;drREKT! is a Stunt Driving game that plays like a Tony Hawk game with cars. It has some good multiplayer support and surprisingly smooth visuals, but the levels are too bland and the game overall is lacking in content. Still a fun time, but this could have been so much better. | ||
| SnowRunner | Open-World Driving Simulation | B- |
tl;drSnowRunner is an Open-World Simulation-style Driving Game that is a sequel to MudRunner, and improves on it quite a bit with its Open-World elements making the game’s punishing, slow-paced gameplay more rewarding. And while this game definitely received a visual downgrade on Nintendo Switch, it remains gorgeous despite the graphical issues this version has. Overall, SnowRunner is still an extremely niche game that not everyone will enjoy, but it is much-improved over its predecessor, and those who this game speaks to will surely be delighted. | ||
| Car Quest | Driving Adventure | C+ |
tl;drCar Quest has you exploring a surreal low-poly environment using a car… although “explore” is maybe not the best word for it since the game is extremely linear and keeps telling you where you need to go with its annoying narration from a literal talking head. Despite this game’s extremely frustrating elements, it still has a nice zen-like quality that makes it enjoyable if you can tolerate its flaws. | ||
| MudRunner: American Wilds | Driving Simulation | C+ |
tl;drMudRunner: American Wilds is a Driving Simulation that has you driving multiple real-life vehicles to deliver hauls in rugged environments. It is a game that does an amazing job simulating the difficulty of driving in the wild, and a lot of the graphical touches are phenomenal, but between the awkward controls and the frustrating difficulty, this is a game that’s going to have a very narrow appeal. | ||
| 4×4 Offroad Driver | Off-Road Racing Game | C |
tl;dr4×4 Offroad Driver is a Simulation-style Off-Road Racing Game that has players navigating off-road obstacle courses. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and the game is far too lacking in options and content for its price. This game may be a decent time-waster if you get it on sale, but definitely don’t buy it at full-price. | ||
| 4×4 Offroad Driver 2 | Off-Road Racing Game | C |
tl;dr4×4 Offroad Driver 2, like this game’s predecessor, is a Simulation-style Off-Road Racing Game that has players navigating off-road obstacle courses. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and the game is far too lacking in options and content for its price. This game may be a decent time-waster if you get it on sale, but definitely don’t buy it at full-price. | ||
| 4×4 OffRoad Collection | Compilation / Off-Road Racing Game | C |
tl;dr4×4 OffRoad Collection is a Compilation of two Simulation-style Off-Road Racing Games – 4×4 Offroad Driver and 4×4 Offroad Driver 2. Both of these games reuse the same core gameplay and share assets, but both also suffer from gameplay and graphical issues. At the very least, this bundle is a decent value, but only if you get it on sale. No one is going to mistake these games for anything high-quality, but if you get this bundle cheap, you may find it a worthwhile time-waster. | ||
| Emergency Driver Simulator | Driving / Racing Game | C |
tl;drEmergency Driver Simulator is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the vehicles here do not handle well, it is far too lacking in options and content for its price, and while it has more variety than most other games from this developer, it’s still overall severely lacking. I do not recommend this. | ||
| New York City Driver | Driving / Racing Game | C |
tl;drNew York City Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. And color me shocked, after countless times seeing this same gameplay template copy-pasted, this time the developer actually made something pretty enjoyable with it. It’s still graphically-ugly, loaded with issues, and the $13 price tag is an insult, but if you’re looking for a Driving Simulation game and not a Racing game, and can catch this game on sale, I think you’ll find it to be a fun but highly flawed experience. | ||
| Snakeybus | Driving / Arcade / Misc. | C |
tl;drSnakeybus is a game that takes the basic idea of the classic game Snake and re-imagines it as a game where you’re picking up and dropping off fares in a constantly-growing bus. It’s a silly but compelling concept, and it occasionally manages to be fun, but it is frequently brought down here by a huge laundry list of flaws that mar the experience and make it far less fun than it should be. | ||
| ACA NEOGEO Over Top | Isometric Racing | C- |
tl;drOver Top is an Isometric Racing game that follows up Thrash Rally and improves the visuals tremendously while doing absolutely nothing to address the gameplay issues and even making them worse. In short, these vehicles are too large on-screen and going too fast to turn on time. Plus, no multiplayer. It all adds up to a game that you shouldn’t bother with. | ||
| Arcade Archives Excitebike | Side-Scrolling Motorcycle Racing | C- |
tl;drExcitebike is a Side-Scrolling Motorcycle Racing game that’s a classic from Nintendo’s earliest days as a game developer, but one that has aged significantly, and the lack of multiplayer really hurts this one. On top of this, the price seems far too steep, especially with multiple NES versions of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app, both of them improved over this version. As a result, it’s difficult to give this game a recommendation. | ||
| Car Driver Ultimate | Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drCar Driver Ultimate is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, the game is highly repetitive, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. This is a better game than both other games in the series, Sports Car Driver and Super Car Driver, but that’s nor saying much. | ||
| City’s Hero Collection | Compilation / Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drCity’s Hero Collection is a Compilation of two Driving Simulation games with Racing game elements – Construction Site Driver, and Emergency Driver Simulator. Both games reuse the same core gameplay and share assets, and both have major gameplay and graphical issues. At the very least, this bundle is a decent value, but only if you get it on sale. Even then, I wouldn’t recommend this. | ||
| Construction Site Driver | Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drConstruction Site Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the vehicles here do not handle well, it is far too lacking in options and content for its price, and it makes poor use of its construction vehicle theme. Skip it. | ||
| CyberTaxi | Driving Action | C- |
tl;drCyberTaxi is a post-apocalyptic Driving Action game that’s a spiritual successor to the 1994 game Quarantine. Unfortunately, this is an extremely dated experience with far too many issues to be worth putting up with now, in particular an interface that takes up most of the screen and an unhelpful map. Unless you’re a fan of Quarantine looking for a successor that hasn’t advanced much in the last 27 years, skip this one. | ||
| Driving World: Aspen | Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drDriving World: Aspen is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. This is one of the better takes on this formula, but that’s not saying much. | ||
| Driving World: Italian Job | Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drDriving World: Italian Job is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. This is one of the better takes on this formula, adding a fair amount of variety in different mission types and vehicles, but it’s still terribly lacking. | ||
| Driving World: Nordic Challenge | Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drDriving World: Nordic Challenge is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. This is one of the better takes on this formula, but that’s not saying much. | ||
| Driving World Collection | Compilation / Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drDriving World: Nordic Challenge is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. This is one of the better takes on this formula, but that’s not saying much. | ||
| Rock ‘N Racing Bundle Grand Prix & Rally | Compilation / Racing | C- |
tl;drRock ‘N Racing Bundle Grand Prix & Rally is a Compilation of two Racing games, the decent but unspectacular Rally Rock ‘N Racing, and the terrible Grand Prix Rock ‘N Racing, all for the value price of… a penny more than it costs to get the games separately. In other words, don’t bother with this bundle – it’s not worth it. | ||
| Speedster’s Collection | Compilation / Driving / Racing Game | C- |
tl;drSpeedster’s Collection is a Compilation of three Driving Simulation games with Racing game elements – Car Driver Ultimate, Sports Car Driver, and Super Car Driver. All three games are basically the same thing on a different map with only minor changes between them, and all three have control issues and are far too repetitive. At the very least, this bundle is a decent value, but only if you get it on sale. Just to be clear, this is a niche trio of games, and highly-flawed as well. There’s some enjoyment to be had here, but players looking for an inexpensive Racing game have much better options on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Super Box Delivery: Beyond the Horizon | Auto-Runner | C- |
tl;drSuper Box Delivery is a behind-the-character Auto-Runner where players drive a vehicle collecting and dropping off packages. The graphics in this game are surprisingly good, but the music is absolutely terrible, and the terrible turning controls ruin any fun this game could provide. You have better options than this on the Nintendo Switch. | ||
| City Traffic Driver | Driving / Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drCity Traffic Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. Don’t buy this game. | ||
| Overdelivery – Delivery Simulator | Isometric Driving | D+ |
tl;drOverdelivery is an Isometric Driving game where players race to deliver things in an open-ended city. This game has a great relaxed presentation, and the core concept is sound, but the terrible controls and uncooperative vehicles, as well as absolutely ridiculous traffic pile-ups, make this far too much of an ordeal to enjoy its good qualities. | ||
| Rock ‘N Racing Bundle 3 in 1 | Compilation / Racing | D+ |
tl;drRock ‘N Racing 3 in 1 Bundle is a Compilation of three Racing games, the decent but unspectacular Rally Rock ‘N Racing, the terrible Grand Prix Rock ‘N Racing, and the atrociously bad Rock ‘N Racing Off Road DX. None of these games is especially worthwhile on their own, and bundling them together doesn’t make them any better, even if you save $5 by buying them as a package. Do yourself a favor and save $25 by not buying them at all. | ||
| Rush Hours Collection | Compilation / Driving / Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drRush Hours Collection is a Compilation of two Driving Simulation games with Racing game elements – Drift & Drive, and New York City Driving. Both games reuse the same core gameplay and share assets, but New York City Driving at least recontextualizes those elements into something interesting, while Drift & Drive seems to bring the worst parts of this template to the forefront. At the very least, this bundle is a decent value, but only if you get it on sale. However, I feel like you’re better off just getting New York City Driving on its own, if you get either game at all. Why spend more for a good deal just to get a bad game? | ||
| Sports Car Driver | Driving / Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drSports Car Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, the game is highly repetitive, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. | ||
| Super Car Driver | Driving / Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drSuper Car Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, the game is highly repetitive, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. | ||
| Traffic Master Collection | Compilation / Driving / Racing Game | D+ |
tl;drTraffic Master Collection is a Compilation of three Driving Simulation games with Racing game elements – Multilevel Parking Driver, Driving World: Italian Job, and City Traffic Driver. All three games reuse the same core gameplay and share assets, with varying degrees of success, but all three suffer from gameplay and graphical issues. At the very least, this bundle is a decent value, but only if you get it on sale. But it’s a better value for three games that are mediocre at best. | ||
| Drift & Drive | Driving / Racing Game | D |
tl;drDrift & Drive is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, the game is highly repetitive, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. And even compared to other games using this same template, this one seems to combine some of the worst elements of all of them, making it one of the worst of the bunch. Do not buy this game. | ||
| Racing Xtreme 2 | Arcade / Racing | D |
tl;drRacing Xtreme 2 is a Racing Game with Mobile-style Two-Button Arcade-style mechanics where players tap a button in time with an on-screen prompt. The presentation here is pretty good, but the gameplay is so brain-dead that I can’t imagine anyone wanting to play this game for more than a few minutes before losing all interest. | ||
| Real Drift Racing | Stunt Racing | D |
tl;drReal Drift Racing is a Stunt Racing game where your focus is less on racing and more on having your car drifting as much as possible without spinning out or crashing. Unfortunately, it’s lacking in content, with no other racers onscreen, and the racing itself is terrible. Do not buy. | ||
| Top Speed: Drag & Fast Racing | Drag Racing | D |
tl;drTop Speed: Drag & Fast Racing is a Drag Racing game that’s simple to the point of boredom, and on top of that it’s a shoddy port of a 5 year-old mobile game. Don’t waste your time with this. | ||
| Trax – Build It Race It | Slot Car Racing | D |
tl;drTrax is a Slot Car Racing game that fails in just about every way – the presentation is terrible, the gameplay can’t even manage to get Slot Car Racing’s one-button simplicity right, and the track builder is extremely limited. Don’t waste your time and money on this mess. | ||
| Battle & Crash | Car Combat | D- |
tl;drBattle & Crash is an isometric Car Combat game that’s just terrible. Ugly graphics, mindless gameplay, bad AI, and a serious lack of options are some of the more notable flaws in a game that seems like it was amateurishly put together. Do not buy this game. | ||
| Drift Legacy | Driving Game | D- |
tl;drDrift Legacy is a Driving Game where players must drift as much as possible in the game’s four tracks. Unfortunately, the gameplay is bad, the controls are even worse, the menus are terrible and the graphics are unimpressive. Just about the only thing this game does right is its soundtrack, and that one positive is not enough reason to play this terrible game. | ||
| High Cars | Stunt Driving / Arcade | D- |
tl;drHigh Cars is an Arcade-style Driving Game where players try to drive their car through a stunt course suspended high in the air. The concept is good, and the $1 price tag is tempting, but the game seems cheaply slapped-together and the driving controls are terrible. Even at this low price, this game is not worth it. | ||
| Multilevel Parking Driver | Driving / Racing Game | D- |
tl;drMultilevel Parking Driver is a game that mixes elements of Driving Simulation and Racing games, with a focus mainly on the Driving Simulation side of things. Unfortunately, the cars here do not handle well, and it is far too lacking in options and contents for its price. Even worse, this game forces things to be even more repetitive than the already-repetitive formula by forcing players to replay the same levels multiple times for completion. Even among a pretty bad series of games, this is particularly terrible. | ||
| Tiny Derby | Arcade / Racing (Misc.) / Puzzle | D- |
tl;drTiny Derby is a mobile-style Arcade game with Racing and Puzzle elements that has players trying to help their yellow square win a foot race against other squares by placing power-up and power-down items on the track. It’s an interesting idea made mediocre by a lack of depth and variety, then made outright bad due to terrible game design and controls. Don’t bother with this one. | ||
| Racing Champions | Racing Game | F |
tl;drRacing Champions is a Racing Game with terrible framerates and a horrendously bad camera that’s a bigger opponent than any racer you’ll face off against in-game. I could go on to complain about the shallow gameplay and lack of content, but the camera itself makes this a Racing Game you’ll never want to play. | ||
