| Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze | Platformer | A+ |
tl;drDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is about as good as 2D platformers can get – it plays well, it looks great, and the level design is some of the best that’s ever been seen in a videogame. This is a game that should be in every Switch owner’s collection. |
| Super Mario Maker 2 | Platformer | A |
tl;drSuper Mario Maker 2, like its predecessor, is a Mario level creator that’s a creative gamer’s dream, and those who aren’t creative will have a huge wealth of content to enjoy. Even a half a year later the online play is still terrible, and it feels like for every two improvements this game makes it loses one feature from the first game, but overall this is still an excellent game every Mario fan should get. |
| Steamworld Dig 2 | Platformer | A |
tl;drSteamworld Dig 2, like the first game, is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mine shaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. However, this sequel improves on the first game in just about every way, with more player options, more varied environments, and a longer campaign with a more interesting story. This is a must-have for fans of Platformers, and a no-brainer for anyone who enjoyed the first game. |
| Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair | Platformer | A |
tl;drYooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a family-friendly 2D Platformer in the style of the Donkey Kong Country games. While it never quite reaches the excellence of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, it is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, with amazing graphics and sound, and solid gameplay. It even adds a few original ideas of its own, such as a wonderful overworld area with lots of puzzles and exploration, and alternate versions of every level that provide a completely different experience. While it’s not without its faults, it is still one of the best Platforming experiences on the Switch, and well worth playing. |
| Yoshi’s Crafted World | Platformer | A |
tl;drYoshi’s Crafted World is a family-friendly Platformer that takes the series’ gameplay into a world made of cardboard and other crafting materials, making the entire game look like you’re playing through a child’s diorama. The game really explores this idea well, using it for all sorts of interesting surprises and twists on the gameplay, with some good co-op play and a low challenge level making it ideal for youngsters while still giving more seasoned players challenges to pursue. It’s not perfect, but even so it’s the best game in the Yoshi series since Yoshi’s Island, and a must-have for fans of Platformers. |
| Gris + Neva Bundle | Compilation / Platformer | A- |
tl;dr
Gris + Neva Bundle is a Compilation of the two named games, a Platformer and Action-Platformer that are both incredible must-have audiovisual experiences. This bundle is a decent deal if you’re not going to wait for a sale, too… but if you can wait, then just get the games separately, as their sale prices are better than this package’s sale price. |
| Horace | Platformer | A- |
tl;drHorace is a Platformer where players take the role of a robot trying to make sense of the world, help others, and clean up junk. This is a wonderful Platformer with a surprisingly moving and funny story and great characters. It can’t fully seem to decide if it wants to be a Metroidvania or a more straightforward Platformer, but either way this game is a phenomenal Platformer well worth playing. |
| Kirby Star Allies | Platformer | A- |
tl;drKirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the Kirby series that largely stays true to the series’ roots, with the main difference being the new “ally” mechanic that has you making helper characters. It’s an audiovisual treat, and an absolute must-have game for those looking for a great kid-friendly co-op experience on the Switch. However, more skilled players looking for a challenge aren’t likely to find it here. |
| Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe | Platformer | A- |
tl;drKirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a re-release of a family-friendly Platformer that was originally released on the Wii. Multiple elements have been remade or expanded on here, including redone visuals, expanded features, and a really enjoyable new “Magolor Epilogue”. This combines with the original game’s excellent gameplay and great multiplayer to make for a truly excellent game. Unfortunately, the added content here doesn’t quite seem to justify the $60 price tag for a game that’s over a decade old, but if you’re a Platformer fan who never played the original, consider this a must-have. |
| Promenade | Platformer / Puzzle-Platformer | A- |
tl;dr
Promenade is a Platformer with Puzzle-Platformer elements that takes the goal-oriented level design of some 3D Platformers and brings it into a 2D game with plenty of creativity and a solid presentation. This game is absolutely one that Platformer fans should play. |
| Remnants of Naezith | Platformer | A- |
tl;drRemnants of Naezith is a challenging Platformer where players must use a grappling hook and the game’s fun physics system to swing their way to the end of every level. The gameplay here is great, fast-paced, and gives players a lot they can do despite having a limited move set. If you’re down for a tough but fair Platformer, this is a great choice. |
| Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog remains a classic platformer, and this release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. |
| Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog 2 is a classic Platformer originally released on the Sega Genesis, and it has aged pretty well. This release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. This is one of the highlights of the series, and well worth grabbing for any fan of Platformers. |
| Shovel Knight Dig | Platformer / Roguelike | A- |
tl;drShovel Knight Dig is a Platformer with strong Roguelike elements, tweaking the excellent Platformer gameplay of the original Shovel Knight and using it to have the player digging down into the earth in a Roguelike-style structure. This game captures much of what worked so well in the original Shovel Knight but recontextualizes it into a Roguelike experience, and for the most part this works brilliantly, though the high challenge level may put off fans of the original game. Still, if you’re not intimidated by a challenge, this is a superb game well worth playing. |
| Super Mega Zero | Platformer / Shmup | A- |
tl;drSuper Mega Zero is a challenging Platformer with some Shmup sections where players control a zero who can’t jump, but who can touch numbers to jump or dash that many times. This is one of many creative gameplay mechanics that this game is constantly adding into the mix, and combined with excellent level design, a fantastic soundtrack, and some really fun (if a bit overly-easy) Shmup levels all make for a game that’s a lot of fun, and should be a no-brainer for fans of challenging Platformers. |
| Ultimate Chicken Horse | Platformer / Party Game | A- |
tl;drUltimate Chicken Horse is a family-friendly Platformer with a robust creation tool set and a focus on multiplayer gameplay that challenges players to create levels that they can beat but the other players can’t. It’s a tremendously good time, and while the presentation and core gameplay aren’t on par with Super Mario Maker 2, the multiplayer in this game is clearly superior, making this a fantastic party game. If you’re looking for a good supplement to Mario Maker or a fun game to bring out at a party, Ultimate Chicken Horse is a must-have. |
| Light Fall | Platformer | A- |
tl;drLight Fall is a platformer with excellent physics and a really great “magic box” mechanic that makes it really fun to move around, and the game’s presentation is superb… that is, except for the throwaway story and the annoying narration. However, while this game isn’t without its problems, fans of platformers should still give it a try, as it’s still a blast to play. |
| Mutant Mudds Collection | Compilation / Platformer / Falling Block Puzzle | A- |
tl;drMutant Mudds Collection is a compilation of the two Mutant Mudds Platformer games and a new Puzzle game, with all three being good entries in their respective genres, and the collection overall being a fantastic value. |
| Octahedron: Transfixed Edition | Platformer | A- |
tl;drOctahedron is a Platformer with some unique mechanics that have you creating your own platforms and surfing on them in a neon-infused presentation with a rocking chiptune soundtrack. This game is a delight that fans of Platformers should absolutely play. |
| Sonic Mania | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSonic Mania is a Platformer that mixes classic throwback levels with newer, remixed stage design to create something unique and refreshing that stands as the best the series has ever been. It may not top Mario in my book, but it’s a must-have game regardless. |
| Steamworld Dig | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSteamworld Dig is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mineshaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. This is a game well worth getting. |
| Super Cable Boy | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSuper Cable Boy is a challenging Platformer where players control a Game Boy-like device in a digital world. The visual presentation is striking and fits the game’s themes well, but what really stands out here is the excellent gameplay, which challenges players to swap between different “cartridges” (abilities) to perform some great acrobatic feats. There’s even a solid 2-player co-op mode here as well. In short, if you enjoy challenging Platformers, consider Super Cable Boy a must-have. |
| Super Mario Bros. Wonder | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. Wonder is a family-friendly Platformer that brings Mario back to 2D with brand new “wonder effects” that transform every level in the game in creative, inventive ways that infuse this game with tons of variety and personality. What’s more, this game has plenty of new multiplayer features and accessibility options to make this game ideal for younger and less-experienced players. This game is far more inspired than the New Super Mario Bros. games that preceded it… just don’t expect something as incredible as the classic games of Mario’s 8-bit and 16-bit eras or you’ll be disappointed. However, while this game doesn’t reach the same heights as Mario’s classic adventures, it is nevertheless a truly excellent Platformer that any fan of the genre should absolutely play. |
| Super Meat Boy | Platformer | A- |
tl;drSuper Meat Boy is a challenging platformer with a great physics engine, superb gameplay, and a generally great presentation, and the Switch version even adds in a nice 2-player mode. But it also doesn’t have the original game’s fantastic soundtrack, and that’s a big loss for an otherwise incredible game. |
| VVVVVV | Platformer | A- |
tl;drVVVVVV is a gravity-changing Platformer designed to look like an old-school Commodore 64 game, but its simple exterior hides an extremely well-designed game underneath, with a memorable soundtrack, excellent level design, and a really good challenge level. Also, the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with more features and a better framerate than other versions. It’s just a shame that the game is still too damn short. Still, it’s amazing while it lasts. |
| Adventures of Chris | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drAdventures of Chris is a Platformer about a dumpy kid turned into a balloon by a vampire and ultimately using this ability to become a hero. It’s a whimsical game that uses its balloon-like mechanics to make for some clever level design, as well as Mega Man-esque game progression that makes for an overall fun experience. It may not look like much, but if you can get past the lacking presentation, Adventures of Chris is a unique delight of a Platformer. |
| Adventures of Pip | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drAdventures of Pip is a Platformer where players play as the titular Pip, who can power up and down into different versions of himself with different amounts of detail in how many pixels he has, each with a different set of abilities. The concept is clever, the level design is strong, and the presentation is fantastic. I wish there were a bit more freedom to tackle the levels the way you want, but overall this is an excellent entry in the genre. |
| Antonblast | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drAntonblast is a Platformer that channels the frenetic energy of the classic Wario Land games and delivers a delightful whirlwind of destructive energy, one that is so viscerally delightful it feels like it crashes to a halt when you actually need to take a moment to be more careful. While these moments may perhaps be necessary, they slow down the flow of what is otherwise a delightful game that Platformer fans should absolutely get their hands on. |
| Downwell | Arcade /Platformer | B+ |
tl;drDownwell is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are dropping at high speeds down a well while avoiding enemies. Its simple visuals keep the focus on the fast-paced, addictive gameplay, and even though it’s punishingly difficult, you’ll still want to keep coming back for another attempt. |
| Evergate | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drEvergate is a Platformer where players take the role of a spirit using a “soulflame” beam to activate floating gems in each level to unleash their abilities and reach that level’s exit. This game’s mechanics and level design are superb, and the presentation is excellent. While I do feel that this game’s mechanics could have been even better if they weren’t so restrictive, overall I think this is a superb Platformer that fans of the genre should absolutely play. |
| Freedom Planet 2 | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drFreedom Planet 2 once again delivers its great take on the core Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay, and this time improves on multiple elements in the gameplay and presentation. The result is an outstanding Platformer that any fan of Sonic-style games should absolutely get their hands on. |
| Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams – Owltimate Edition | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drGiana Sisters is a family-friendly Platformer that has players swapping between two different versions of the world to use different abilities and get past obstacles. This game feels similar to Donkey Kong Country, but its mechanics are all its own. This is a beautiful game with fun mechanics that’s absolutely a must-play for fans of the genre, even if it suffers a bit of sameyness throughout. |
| Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition | Puzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Party Game | B+ |
tl;drHome Sheep Home is a family-friendly co-op Puzzle-Platformer and Party Game based on the Shaun the Sheep animated series and films. This game manages to do a great job with all of its disparate elements – the license is scaled-down somewhat, but what’s here does justice to the franchise. The Puzzle-Platformer content is smartly well-crafted, and the Party Game content is fun and varied enough to keep players entertained for a good while. I have some issues with the core Platformer mechanics here, but overall this is an excellent package that does its best to please everyone, and largely succeeds. |
| Kaze and the Wild Masks | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drKaze and the Wild Masks is a Family-Friendly Platformer that is clearly directly based on the Donkey Kong Country games, and while it may not be very original, the gameplay here is excellent, the level design and enemy design is great, there’s good pacing and variety. This is a superb Platformer, and a must-have for Donkey Kong Country fans. |
| Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series | Compilation / Platformer | B+ |
tl;drKlonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a Compilation of modern remakes of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil, a pair of charming family-friendly Platformers that both do a superb job of combining 2D gameplay with 3D elements, all wrapped in a presentation that’s absolutely wonderful, if a tad quaint and outdated. There are a few places here or there where I feel like these games could be further improved, and the selling of bonus content for an additional $20 seems unnecessarily greedy, but overall it’s hard to see this Compilation as anything but a wonderful package that any Platformer fan should absolutely snatch up. |
| Lair of the Clockwork God | Graphic Adventure / Platformer | B+ |
tl;drLair of the Clockwork God is a game that has players swapping between one protagonist who plays like a Graphic Adventure, and one who plays like a traditional Platformer. The platforming here kinda’ gets the short end of the stick, but this is easily forgiven with how absolutely fantastic the game’s writing is, with a hilarious wit and sense of humor that makes it one of the funniest games on the Nintendo Switch. If you’re looking for a blending of genres, this game may disappoint you, but if you want a solid Graphic Adventure that’ll have you laughing, you should definitely give this game a try. |
| MO:Astray | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drMO:Astray is a Platformer that has you flinging a little blue blob around a destroyed research facility. The gameplay here is clever and original, and the compelling story does a good job propelling you to keep moving forward. There are a few small frustrations here, but overall this is an excellent, thoughful Platformer well worth playing. |
| Ms. Splosion Man | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drMs. Splosion Man is a solid Platformer with good co-op and an amusing presentation, although that presentation can wear a bit thin before long. Still, this is definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. |
| Mutant Mudds Collection + Xeodrifter | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drMutant Mudds Collection + Xeodrifter is a Compilation of the two named titles, and while these are all excellent Platformers of one kind or another, and this bundle is currently less expensive than getting the games separately, that’s only because the individual games have had their prices raised, meaning you’re still overall getting a bad deal. If you don’t have these games yet, this bundle is still well worth getting, but I can’t give it the same high recommendation I would without all the gross trickery at play here. |
| N++ | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drN++ is a challenging Platformer with extremely simple graphics that has you as a ninja in single-screen levels trying to hit a switch and reach the exit before time runs out. The way movement works in this game is the real star of the show here, making for some truly excellent gameplay, and this game is absolutely loaded with content and game modes, including a stage builder and online community to download stages from. However, this is a challenging game that won’t appeal to everyone, and the game’s menus and stage builder aren’t very user-friendly. Still, if you’re looking for pure Platforming challenge, this game is a must-have. |
| Polyroll | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drPolyroll is a family-friendly Platformer that plays like a midway point between a Sonic game and a Mario game, and the result is something that’s actually pretty enjoyable. It’s definitely not going to win any prizes for originality, but what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for with well-crafted gameplay and quality level design. Add to that an appealing $5 price tag and you have a game that Platformer fans should definitely check out. |
| Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drRayman Legends: Definitive Edition is a platformer that doesn’t do anything especially new with the genre, but what it does do is bring quality gameplay, tons of content, and a gorgeous presentation. If you’re a fan of 2D platformers, this game is for you. |
| Runbow | Platformer / Party Game | B+ |
tl;drRunbow is a Platformer with Party Game sensibilities, where as many as 8 or 9 players are racing to a goal or duking it out to remain king of the hill, and it makes for some good frantic fun. It’s not especially deep and is missing a few features you’d want in this sort of thing, but on the whole this is a great game to bust out at a party. |
| SpeedRunners | Platformer / Party Game | B+ |
tl;drSpeedRunners is a multiplayer-focused Platformer that has up to four players racing through levels and trying to outpace the others. The gameplay here is well-designed and fun to play, and although I wish the game had more features and a more significant single-player mode, it’s overall an excellent entry in the genre. |
| Splasher | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drSplasher is a challenging platformer with some excellent physics and good use of the central concept of various fluids that get sloshed around the environment to change those physics. It’s a solid game that’s fun to play, but the levels feel a bit repetitive and there’s room for improvement. |
| The Adventure Pals | Platformer | B+ |
tl;drThe Adventure Pals is a family-friendly Platformer with a wacky theme that seems reminiscent of Adventure Time, with wacky, cartoony hijinks. The platforming here is excellent, even if it’s not as original as the presentation, and broken up by mediocre button-mashy combat. Fans of the genre would do well to give this one a try. |
| Underhero | Platformer / RPG | B+ |
tl;drUnderhero is a game that combines RPG and Platformer elements with a story that casts you as a minion who manages to kill the story’s hero and must now scramble to secretly become the new hero. This game has a fun story, excellent characters, a great sense of humor and a good soundtrack, and the excellent RPG combat takes a few ideas from the Paper Mario games. Unfortunately, the platforming isn’t so great, but everything else here is so good I’d still highly recommend it to RPG fans. |
| BZZZT | Platformer | B |
tl;drBZZZT is a challenging Platformer where players try to get through obstacle course-style levels as a robot. This game doesn’t do anything especially new or original, but nevertheless the quality of the gameplay, level design, and presentation shines through, making this well worth a look. |
| Celeste | Platformer | B |
tl;drCeleste is a challenging Platformer, with the emphasis on “challenge”. If that’s your jam, this game is for you. But it really wore on me toward the end. |
| Circa Infinity | Platformer / Arcade | B |
tl;drCirca Infinity is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players jumping further and further into concentric circles while avoiding enemies. The simple but hypnotic visuals are striking, and the simple but surprisingly varied and clever gameplay is engaging. It’s just a shame that the way the game messes with perspective causes control issues. Still, this is an excellent and unique game that does a lot with a little, and fans of Platformers should definitely give it a try. |
| Daggerhood | Platformer | B |
tl;drDaggerhood is a challenging Platformer where players take the role of the titular thief, who has a dagger he can throw and then teleport himself to. I would have preferred a few tweaks to the controls here, but overall this is an excellent Platformer with a clever central mechanic and great level design, well worth the low $5 price tag. |
| Dig Dog | Platformer / Roguelike | B |
tl;drDig Dog is a simple Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you playing as a dog digging through the Earth to get to a bone, avoiding enemies along the way. The game is fairly unforgiving, but still well worth playing thanks to how good the core gameplay is. |
| Donkey Kong Country Returns HD | Platformer | B |
tl;drDonkey Kong Country Returns HD is a solid remaster of an excellent Platformer from Wii and Nintendo 3DS, but this release doesn’t add much, and overall does little to justify its $60 price tag, especially when Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is also on Nintendo Switch and an overall superior game. By comparison, this feels a bit like taking a step backwards at this point. |
| Elliot Quest | Action-RPG / Platformer | B |
tl;drElliot Quest is an Action-RPG Platformer that’s clearly inspired by Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and it does a good job presenting a new quest with a similar sort of gameplay, thanks to solid level design. It’s not very deep or original, but if you’re a fan of this sort of game, Elliot Quest is worth a look. |
| Flat Heroes | Platformer / Arcade | B |
tl;drFlat Heroes is a challenging Platformer with a simple presentation that has you playing as a square dodging the attacks of various geometric shape enemies. While the presentation could have made a few elements of the game clearer, and the game doesn’t do anything particularly new or revolutionary, overall this is a solid entry in the genre well worth a look. |
| Flipping Death | Graphic Adventure / Platformer | B |
tl;drFlipping Death is a Graphic Adventure about a young woman who meets her untimely demise and finds herself temping for Death, solving puzzles by possessing the living. This is a clever, funny take on the genre that fixes many of the problems present in the developer’s former work, though the game does suffer a little from its greater focus on Platforming, despite not being a very good Platformer. |
| Freedom Planet | Platformer | B |
tl;drFreedom Planet is a Platformer that looks, feels, and plays like a Sonic game without the high speeds, while bringing some unique things to the table as well. Fans of Platformers and especially fans of Sonic games should definitely give this one a look. |
| Grapple Dog | Platformer | B |
tl;drGrapple Dog is a family-friendly Platformer where players take the role of a cartoony anthropomorphic dog named Pablo and use a grappling hook to swing through the game’s levels. While there are some issues with the game’s physics, overall this is a delightful entry in the genre, well worth playing. |
| Hayfever | Platformer | B |
tl;drHayfever is a challenging Platformer that has you playing a mailman propelling himself through the game’s levels with explosive sneezes. The game’s endearing presentation, inventive gameplay, good variety, and strong pacing outweigh the at times unfair difficulty caused by the game’s out of control mechanics. Fans of challenging Platformers should absolutely give this game a try. |
| Heave Ho | Platformer / Party Game | B |
tl;drHeave Ho is a Platformer that has players controlling a character’s two hands to try to grasp and grapple their way to an exit. It’s fun in single-player, but this game truly shines in multiplayer. It’s not perfect, but if you have four people who can maybe-sorta’ work together, this is a really fun time. |
| In-Vert | Platformer | B |
tl;drIn-Vert is a challenging Platformer that has you swapping between two parallel realities to get past obstacles and reach the exit. It’s a game that doesn’t do anything especially original or extraordinary, but it’s solid enough to be worth the low price tag. |
| Inside My Radio | Platformer / Music-Rhythm | B |
tl;drInside My Radio is a Platformer where every action you take has to fit the game’s beats. This works pretty well, thanks in part to a great soundtrack and colorful presentation, but it’s not especially deep and the story bogs down the experience somewhat. |
| Jet Kave Adventure | Platformer | B |
tl;drJet Kave Adventure is a family-friendly Platformer that has players taking the role of a caveman with a jet pack. Beautiful visuals, great level design, and solid Platforming all make this a superb entry in the genre, though I wish the framerates were better and I could do without the hang gliding levels. Despite those issues, I do recommend this game to Platforming fans – it’s a pretty good take on the genre. |
| Little Bug | Platformer | B |
tl;drLittle Bug is a Platformer that has really nice visuals, lots of personality, and unique gameplay that has players controlling both a young girl and a ball of light that tethers to her to swing her around the environment. This is an extremely challenging Platformer, and it will only last you a few hours, but if you fancy a challenge, this game’s joyous movement and great atmosphere is well worth experiencing while it lasts. |
| Mike Dies | Platformer | B |
tl;drMike Dies is a challenging Platformer where players need to exit each level by finding a way to get their entire body in a teleportation portal (or else suffer the fate in the game’s title). It doesn’t look very impressive, but this game’s superb level design and insanely good $1 price tag make this a must-have game for Platformer fans looking for something tough, fun, and cheap. |
| Milli & Greg | Platformer | B |
tl;drMilli & Greg is a challenging Platformer about a young girl trying to get to her pet cat. The presentation here is full of outstanding old-school charm, and the gameplay is very well-crafted, feeling vaguely similar to Celeste (albeit without that game’s inventive late-game mechanics and deep story). If you’re a fan of Platformers, this one is well worth the $4 price tag. |
| Move or Die: Unleashed | Platformer / Party Game | B |
tl;drMove or Die: Unleashed is a Platformer and Party Game built around a simple concept – your character must constantly keep moving along the ground or lose health. However, what makes this really special is the huge wealth of fun game modes and unlockables, the wonderfully fast pace, the killer soundtrack and the hilarious announcer. It has a few issues with its online, but overall, if you’re looking to add a game to your Party Game list, definitely give this one a look. |
| Never Give Up | Platformer | B |
tl;drNever Give Up is a challenging Platformer where players navigate through multiple progressively more difficult versions of each of the game’s levels. The core gameplay and level design here is excellent, but the repetitive game structure and incessant jabbering of the main character both detract from what is otherwise a fun take on the genre. |
| New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe | Platformer | B |
tl;drNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port of a family-friendly 2012 Wii U Platformer, along with its standalone sequel. This game is absurdly overpriced and horribly unoriginal, and many players will be better off getting Super Mario Maker 2. Having said that, there’s no denying that the gameplay here is still excellent, and the presentation is absolutely polished. If you’re a fan of Platformers or just looking for a simple, straightforward Mario game, you should be more than satisfied with this game. |
| Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | B |
tl;drNickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a game that combines Fighting Game, Platformer, and Party Game elements much like the Super Smash Bros. series, but featuring Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Ninja Turtles. The gameplay and presentation is overall decent, but also feels lacking in some areas, has nasty loading times, and some odd choices have been made with the art direction. Overall this is still a solid entry in the genre, and well worth picking up when the game goes on sale for $5. |
| Onion Assault | Platformer | B |
tl;drOnion Assault is a Platformer where players play as a shirtless hunk (or his mom) fighting off an invading army by tossing vegetables at them. The gameplay here combines elements of Super Mario Bros. 2 with Donkey Kong Country, and the result is fantastic, and held back only by a somewhat loose controls and a lack of Donkey Kong Country’s depth. Still, as a solid mash-up of those two titles, this is an excellent Platformer well worth playing. |
| Pinkman+ | Platformer | B |
tl;drPinkman+ is a challenging Platformer with a simple retro-style look and a catchy soundtrack. It’s a short game without much in the way of features, but the gameplay and level design are excellent, and I’d argue that it’s definitely worth the small $5 price tag. |
| PixelJunk Eden 2 | Platformer | B |
tl;drPixelJunk Eden 2 is a Platformer that has players using silk ziplines to swing their flea-like creature from plant to plant collecting pollen, with a striking electronica soundtrack and abstract light show visuals. Although there are still multiple parts of the game’s design that could do with improvement, overall this is a better game than its predecessor, and a truly unique Platforming experience. |
| Putty Pals | Platformer | B |
tl;drPutty Pals is a Platformer where players control two characters at the same time, or split up the characters between two players. It’s a decent game that’s worth a look, even if it doesn’t do anything especially significant to push the genre forward. |
| Shu | Platformer | B |
tl;drShu is a Platformer where players take the role of a stranded villager fleeing a malevolent storm and joining up with other villagers who briefly grant him new abilities. This isn’t a very long game, and nothing it does is truly groundbreaking, but it’s enjoyable while it lasts. If you like Platformers, this may be worth a look. |
| Sonic Origins | Compilation / Platformer | B |
tl;drSonic Origins is a Compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. All versions of the included games here are arguably the best versions of these games ever made, and this Compilation includes a pretty healthy selection of extra features too. Unfortunately, the price tag is outrageous, the multiple versions of Sonic Origins and the microtransactions are sleazy, and the fact that the target audience already owns half of these games on Nintendo Switch makes its value even more suspect. What’s here is very good, but these questions of value really harm this otherwise great Compilation. |
| Super Magbot | Platformer | B |
tl;drSuper Magbot is a challenging platformer that has players using magnets to attract and repel their way through levels. The presentation here is pure old-school nostalgia, and the gameplay is inventive, but it’s also pretty challenging and difficult to make this game’s mechanics feel like second nature. Not for everyone, but if you enjoy a challenge, you should give it a look. |
| Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack | Platformer | B |
tl;drMutant Blobs Attack is a Platformer that puts players in the role of one of the mutant blobs escaping a research facility. This is a fun and lighthearted Platformer that infuses the genre with a good variety of fun mechanics. The actual platforming itself isn’t very good, but the game has such a fun variety of other distracting mechanics that it more than makes up for this flaw. |
| The Big Journey | Platformer | B |
tl;drThe Big Journey is a family-friendly Platformer with gameaply and a presentation that seem directly inspired by Loco Roco. And while this game doesn’t quite match Loco Roco’s creativity, it is nevertheless an absolute delight that’s worth seeking out if you’re a fan of that franchise, or if you’re looking for an easier Platformer for younger players. |
| The Lost Light of Sisu | Platformer | B |
tl;drThe Lost Light of Sisu is a Platformer where players take the role of a square-shaped alien searching for energy cubes to power their spaceship. This game doesn’t do anything truly groundbreaking, but it is nevertheless a solid Platformer with some good level design and a generally good challenge level. If you’re a fan of the genre, this game is well worth a look. |
| The Tenth Line Special Edition | Action-RPG / Platformer | B |
tl;drThe Tenth Line is an RPG with action-based elements that are somewhat comparable to the Mario & Luigi series, but builds on that with layers upon layers of complex game systems. This may be a bit too much for many players, but those willing to bear with it will find a deep and rewarding game with an excellent, well-written story. |
| Tiny Barbarian DX | Platformer | B |
tl;drTiny Barbarian DX is an action-packed Platformer that’s simple and straightforward, and at times a bit repetitive, but it boasts quality gameplay and is well worth trying out. |
| Wrestledunk Sports | Sports (Various) / Platformer / Party Game | B |
tl;dr
Wrestledunk Sports is a family-friendly Sports-themed multiplayer-focused Platformer and Party Game with five simplified “sports” (both real and fictional): Wrestling, fencing, volleyball, “smashball”, and “megatonk”. These are all fairly simple, yet a surprising amount of fun. This collection could have used even more games, and it has less potential now that the online lobbies are empty, but this is still an excellent Party Game worth adding to your party game playlist. |
| A Highland Song | Platformer | B- |
tl;drA Highland Song is a Platformer that has players helping a young girl to navigate the treacherous Scottish countryside. The game’s presentation is beautiful, with a gorgeous soundtrack and absolutely superb voice acting. And the game’s approach to the Platforming genre is unique and inspired. Unfortunately, the multi-layered scenery makes it a real pain to move to the part of the scenery you want to interact with, creating other problems as a result. There’s still a lot of great elements here, but you have to put up with a fair amount of frustration to get to it. |
| Annalynn | Platformer / Arcade | B- |
tl;drAnnalynn is an Arcade-style Platformer about a miner grabbing up gold while fleeing hostile snakes that pulls gameplay elements from Pac-Man, City Connection, and Donkey Kong Jr. , to name a few. It’s a solid tribute to classics of the genre, though like the games it imitates it can be a bit simple and repetitive. |
| Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros. | Platformer | B- |
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. is an absolute classic Platformer, and VS. Super Mario Bros. is a version of the game that’s altered just enough to be frustrating without changing enough to make it feel truly new. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of Super Mario Bros. being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still a great game, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying. |
| Chalk Dash Carnival | Auto-Runner / Platformer / Party Game | B- |
tl;drChalk Dash Carnival is a game that’s basically two different games in one. There’s one game that uses traditional controls, and it’s terrible, with sluggish movement and gameplay that has you dying a lot to unavoidable obstacles. However, when using the touchscreen in portable mode, this becomes a surprisingly decent, if a bit simple, game that has you drawing platforms and barriers to protect a character and guide them to an exit. For that mode alone, this game is worth a try. |
| Donut Dodo | Platformer / Arcade | B- |
tl;drDonut Dodo succeeds at doing exactly what it aims for – being a fun but challenging retro Arcade-style Platformer in the vein of the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. infused with more modern sensibilities. This game’s short length and high challenge mean not everyone will appreciate it, but for only $5 this is a solid pickup for anyone with a fondness for those classic Arcade games. |
| Embers of Mirrim | Platformer | B- |
tl;drEmbers of Mirrim is an absolutely beautiful game with a fun mechanic that has you separating your cat-dragon creature into two glowy ethereal “embers” to get past obstacles. It’s an interesting mechanic, though the game does at times get a bit tedious and repetitive. |
| Goblin Sword | Platformer | B- |
tl;drGoblin Sword is an old-school family-friendly Platformer that’s completely lacking in originality, but it makes up for this with good mechanics, good level design, and good value. This game doesn’t push any boundaries or do anything especially noteworthy for the genre, but for a mere $5 it’s a solid purchase for fans of the genre. |
| Golf Zero | Platformer | B- |
tl;drGolf Zero is a challenging Platformer only loosely inspired by the sport, but its unique mechanics make it surprisingly compelling and original. Do not get this game if you want a good Golf game. But if you want a challenging and original Platformer for cheap, Golf Zero is definitely worth a look. |
| Kraken Smash: Volleyball | Sports (Volleyball) / Platformer / Party Game | B- |
tl;drKraken Smash: Volleyball is a family-friendly side-view Volleyball game that’s simple and fun in multiplayer. It’s sorely lacking in game modes and options, but for only $5 that’s somewhat forgivable. This is a good addition to your Party Game rotation, though you might want to consider spending more to get the similar and much more varied Wrestledunk Sports. |
| No Heroes Here | Platformer / Tower Defense / Party Game | B- |
tl;dr
No Heroes Here is a Platformer Tower Defense game with strong Party Game elements with a focus on co-op as you and your friends work to defend a castle by crafting the ammunition needed to supply the cannons defending the structure. The co-op play here is solid, but the single-player play really leaves something to be desired. So long as it’s the co-op you’re looking for, I think you’ll be satisfied. |
| Origamihero Games 2D Platformer Collection | Compilation / Platformer / Metroidvania | B- |
tl;drOrigamihero Games 2D Platformer Collection includes the Platformer Smash Star, along with the Metroidvania games Treasure Hunter Man 2 and Unstrong Legacy. The Metroidvania games are pretty good, but what’s really special about this package is its outstanding price. For just over $4, this is a solid collection of content well worth getting. |
| Pepper Grinder | Platformer | B- |
tl;drPepper Grinder is a Platformer that puts players in the role of a woman with a powerful drill. This core mechanic makes for some delightfully visceral gameplay, but it’s also unfortunately pretty unwieldy in ways that can be frustrating. The result is a game that won’t be for everyone, but those who enjoy it will find its better qualities to be delightful. |
| Pizza Tower | Platformer | B- |
tl;drPizza Tower is a Platformer where players take the role of a crazed chef racing his way through stages in an ominous and bizarre tower. The presentation here is absolutely phenomenal, with a truly unique and eye-catching art style. The fast-paced gameplay is appealing too… until you get your hands on it and find the controls to be pretty unwieldy. While still a good game, I feel like these control issues prevent Pizza Tower from being a great one. |
| Rivals of Aether | Fighting Game / Platformer | B- |
tl;drRivals of Aether is a game that combines Fighting games with Platformers in a stlye very much like Super Smash Bros. So much so, in fact, that it’s hard not to compare the two, and that’s a comparison where Rivals comes up very, very short. Still, players looking for something like Smash but a little different may find Rivals of Aether to be worth a look. |
| Slime-San | Platformer | B- |
tl;drSlime-San is a challenging Platformer, with the emphasis on “challenge”, where you’re running, dodging, wall-jumping, and “sliming” your way to the exit. I had mixed feelings about the presentation, but the gameplay is strong in any case. |
| Songbird Symphony | Platformer / Music-Rhythm | B- |
tl;drSongbird Symphony is a family-friendly Platformer with strong Music-Rhythm elements, with a story that follows a young bird searching for his parents. This game is absolutely adorable, and loaded with charm, but it’s not very difficult. Younger players may find this to be a delight, but more experienced gamers are likely to find this to be little more than a brief distraction. |
| Sonic Superstars | Platformer | B- |
tl;drSonic Superstars is a 2D Platformer that seeks to recapture what was great about the early Sonic games with a modern presentation and some fun new mechanics, and it largely succeeds, although not without annoyances like overly-prevalent bonus levels that quickly wear out their welcome, an inexplicably low resolution in docked mode, and outright terrible multiplayer. This is still a fun game, but it can’t compare to Sonic Mania. |
| The End is Nigh | Platformer | B- |
tl;drThe End is Nigh is a challenging Platformer where players take the role of an oddly optimistic survivor of the apocalypse who journeys into the wasteland to find a friend. The level design here is very good and the gameplay is decent, but this game lacks the fun physics and color of its predecessor, Super Meat Boy |
| 6180 The Moon | Platformer | C+ |
tl;dr6180 The Moon is a simple Platformer with the gimmick of players jumping super-high on screens that wrap vertically. The game is graphically as simple as it gets, and only lasts for a few hours, but the gameplay is decent and it’s only $4. On the whole this is probably worth a look for fans of the genre. |
| A Ch’ti Bundle | Puzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Music-Rhythm | C+ |
tl;drThis bundle contains Ethan: Meteor Hunter and Inside My Radio. Ethan: Meteor Hunter is a mediocre Puzzle-Platformer, but Inside My Radio is a decent Platformer with Music-Rhythm elements. However, since you can get Inside My Radio separately, you’re probably better off just doing that. |
| Blood Will Be Spilled | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drBlood Will Be Spilled is a game that combines the sort of side-scrolling Turn-Based Strategy-RPG gameplay we’ve seen in Steamworld Heist, along with Platforming gameplay, all in a Western-themed world with anthropomorphic bug characters. The core Strategy-RPG gameplay is still good here, but not quite on par with what we saw in the Steamworld game. Unfortunately, all of the other added elements here are ineffectual at best, where they don’t actively make this game worse. The Strategy-RPG gameplay is still solid and worth playing, but you’re much better off sticking with Steamworld Heist. |
| Cash Cow DX | Platformer / Arcade | C+ |
tl;drCash Cow DX is a retro-style Arcade-style Platformer where players taking the role of a cow trying to reclaim moooney taken from him by a gang of pigs. This game has some wonderful old-school charm, but it also has an old-school challenge level, which is to say this is so challenging it’s not going to be a game that will appeal to everyone, particularly those attracted by the game’s cute presentation. |
| Castle of Heart + Jet Kave Adventure Bundle | Compilation / Platformer | C+ |
tl;dr
Castle of Heart + Jet Kave Adventure Bundle is a Compilation containing the two named games, each a different type of Platformer. However, of the two only Jet Kave Adventure is really worth bothering with. To its credit, when this bundle goes on sale it may be worth picking up despite this, since it won’t cost much more than Jet Kave Adventure on its own, possibly even the same price. However, I definitely don’t recommend you to get this at full price. |
| Dadish | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drDadish is a family-friendly Platformer about a dad radish on a journey to collect his errant kids. It has an adorable, colorful presentation, but everything else about the game is fairly by-the-book. Not bad, but there’s very little here to set it apart. |
| Dadish 2 | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drDadish 2, like the first game, is a family-friendly Platformer about a dad radish on a journey to collect his errant kids. It continues to have an adorable, colorful presentation, but everything else about the game is still fairly by-the-book. Not bad, but there’s still very little here to set it apart. |
| Dadish 3 | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drDadish 3, like the first two games, is a Platformer about a dad radish on a journey to collect his errant kids. It continues to have an adorable, colorful presentation, but everything else about the game is still fairly by-the-book, and even at times a bit overly-difficult. Not bad, but there’s still very little here to set it apart. |
| Digerati Indie Bundle: Ink & Hacky Zack | Compilation / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drDigerati Indie Bundle: Ink & Hacky Zack is a compilation of two challenging Platformers. Both games are very difficult, but if that’s your thing, this package is worth a look, especially if you get it on sale. |
| Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King | Compilation / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drAladdin and The Lion King are a pair of classic Platformers, each with visuals and animation that have aged extremely well, but the gameplay hasn’t been quite so lucky. They’re presented here in a package that includes multiple versions of each game (though you’ll likely only want to play one version of each), and with a huge assortment of options and extra features, but at a ridiculous price. This is a package that should please fans of the original games and those looking for insights into graphic design and animation, but everyone else is better off staying away from this one. |
| Dojoran | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drDojoran is a challenging Platformer where players take the role of a frog trying to get through a dangerous obstacle course. This is a tough but fair take on the genre with a monochrome retro aesthetic, and while it doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, players looking for a tough-as-nails retro Platformer for an inexpensive $5 will want to give this one a look. |
| Eggggg – The Platform Puker | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drEggggg is a Platformer that features a vomit-spewing protagonist and makes use of an odd, simplified control scheme to shake up an otherwise fairly standard Platformer. It’s definitely not a game for everyone, but if the description appeals to you, you might want to give it a try. |
| Electronic Super Joy | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drElectronic Super Joy is a challenging Platformer set in a world that’s like one massive rave. The gameplay here is punishingly difficult, and every time you pass a checkpoint or respawn, you’ll be treated to one of various sound clips of someone saying “ohhhhh yeahhhh” in a sexually evocative manner. Needless to say, the appeal of this sort of experience is going to be extremely niche, and most players will likely want to skip it. |
| Freedom Planet 1 + 2 Bundle | Compilation / 2D Space Shooter / Roguelike / Turn-Based Strategy | C+ |
tl;dr
Freedom Planet 1 + 2 Bundle is a Compilation containing the two named games, both Sonic the Hedgehog-style Platformers. The games are great, but this bundle’s price doesn’t really justify buying them together like this. Wait for the individual games to go on sale and buy them separately instead – you’ll save a lot more money. |
| Give It Up! Bouncy | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drGive It Up! Bouncy is a family-friendly Platformer where you play as a black blob that is constantly bouncing, with levels that are set up like obstacle courses. The gameplay here is good and varied while still being very accessible, and the presentation is pretty good too. The price tag seems a bit high for what’s on offer here, but overall this is a solid Platformer worth a try if you can catch it on a good sale. |
| Glam’s Incredible Run: Escape From Dukkha | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drGlam is a challenging Platformer that has players swinging and jumping through levels. This game is punishingly difficult, and while there is some clever level design here and a solid presentation, the game is held down by its awkward controls. Still, fans of the genre may want to give it a look. |
| Hacky Zack | Arcade/ Platformer | C+ |
tl;drHacky Zack is a challenging Platformer about kicking a hacky sack to a goal. It’s a solid Platformer with simple mechanics that are well-done, but the challenge level is so high that only those looking for something super-difficult should bother with this game. |
| HoPiKo | Arcade / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drHoPiKo is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are jumping directly from platform to platform within line of sight. The core gameplay here is fun, but the game is made frustrating and tedious by penalizing players’ mistakes by tossing them back multiple levels. Patient players may enjoy this, but everyone else is better off avoiding it. |
| Ink | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drInk is a challenging Platformer where players need to reveal the platforms by splashing colorful ink on them. This game is visually striking, and the premise is great, but the game doesn’t do enough with that premise. Also, the controls are a bit too loose for a game this difficult. Still, if you’re a fan of tougher Platformers, you may want to give this a look. |
| Journey of the Broken Circle | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drJourney of the Broken Circle is a story-focused Platformer that tells an abstract tale about relationships through its gameplay starring a circle missing a piece. This game has some good story dealing with its central topic, and uses gameplay mechanics in some clever ways to deliver that story, but both the story and the gameplay are uneven, with thoughtful examinations injected with cringe-worthy cliches, and good use of gameplay mechanics brought down by sections that are snoozefests and others with sharp difficulty spikes. Overall it’s still a good experience, but a very uneven one. |
| Kuso | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drKuso, like its predecessor LOVE, is a challenging Platformer with extremely simple graphics, a high difficulty level, and a short play time. It is not for everyone, but players looking for a smaller platformer to challenge themselves might find it to their liking. Plus, this game includes versions of all of LOVE’s 16 levels, so players considering this series can skip straight to this game. |
| LOVE | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drLOVE is a challenging Platformer with extremely simple graphics, a high difficulty level, and a short play time. It is not for everyone, but players looking for a smaller platformer to challenge themselves might find it to their liking. |
| Mad Rat Dead | Platformer / Music-Rhythm | C+ |
tl;drMad Rat Dead is a Platformer with Music-Rhythm elements that has you playing a dissected lab rat brought back from the dead to get revenge on the human who killed him. This would be a bog-standard Platformer if it wasn’t for the Music-Rhythm elements, which definitely add something interesting to the game, but it still feels like it’s lacking something truly compelling. |
| Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | C+ |
tl;dr
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is a game which, much like its predecessor, combines Fighting Game, Platformer, and Party Game elements much like the Super Smash Bros. series, but featuring Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Ninja Turtles. This game addresses many of the issues the first game had, and presents exciting new gameplay elements… but at the same time, it doesn’t expand the roster and instead cuts half of the first game’s characters to make room for new ones, drastically changes characters that are still here, and on Nintendo Switch has performance issues and massive loading times. For all this game gets right, it fails in ways that make it really difficult to recommend on Nintendo Switch. |
| Repit | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drRepit is a game that aims to make “Platform Hell”-style Platformers more accessible by letting players draw notes on the screen so they know where traps are when they replay a stage after dying. This is still a game that only more skilled players will enjoy, and the presentation is as simple and unimpressive as possible, but for those curious about the super-niche “Platform Hell” subgenre, this is a good way to try out this style of game. |
| Save Me Mr Tako: Definitive Edition | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drSave Me Mr Tako is a Platformer with a retro pixel art style reminiscent of the original Game Boy, where players take the role of an octopus trying to make peace between octopi and humans. Aside from the endearing presentation, this is a decent but unspectacular game, though at least in this release the challenge level is more reasonable. |
| Spiritfarer | Management Sim / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drSpiritfarer is a game that combines Management Sim and Platforming elements in a game about preparing the souls of the dead for their journey to the other side. The presentation here is absolutely gorgeous, but the gameplay itself is tedious, frustrating, and slow-paced. For some, this will be absolutely perfect, and blend right in with the game’s easygoing tone, but I suspect most will find this game to be far too slow-paced to be worthwhile. |
| Stick It To The Man | Graphic Adventure / Platformer | C+ |
tl;drStick It To The Man is a Graphic Adventure about a guy who gains the ability to use a hand coming out of his head to interact with objects and read minds. This game has a good sense of humor, but it’s made frustrating by annoying stealth elements and some control issues. Fans of the genre still may want to give it a try, but most are better off skipping it. |
| Super Mario Bros. 35 | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. 35 takes the original Super Mario Bros. and gives it a Tetris 99-style “battle royale” treatment by having players compete against 34 other players at once. It’s a fun concept, but it’s lacking in features and once you understand how the game works, it’s fairly easy to succeed by playing defensively. You might as well go ahead and play it before Nintendo yanks it away again at the end of March 2021, but expect this to be a mildly amusing distraction that you play for a little while before tiring of it and moving on to something with more substance. |
| Super Squidlit | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drSuper Squidlit is a retro-style Platformer where, much like the original Squidlit, players take the role of an adorable octopus creature. This is a huge improvement over the previous game, though the new First-Person Shooter sections are somewhat lacking and the $10 price tag seems a bit high for this game’s 3-4 hour length. Still, if you can get it on sale and look past the not-so-great parts, you may find this an enjoyable old-school take on the genre. |
| The Cub | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drThe Cub is a Platformer set in the same world as Golf Club Wasteland, taking place in the wake of that story and following a feral child surviving on a hostile post-apocalyptic Earth running from returning humans from Mars trying to hunt him down. The Platforming here is decent but has multiple baked-in frustrations, but the satire is excellent, albeit perhaps not quite as good as what we had in Golf Club Wasteland, and the game is relatively short. Still, overall this is a solid game with a powerful message, and worth a look if you enjoy good satire. |
| They Bleed Pixels | Platformer / Action-Platformer | C+ |
tl;drThey Bleed Pixels is a challenging Platformer with Action-Platformer elements that has players fighting through deadly blood-soaked spike and buzzsaw-filled levels as a girl with magically-transformed stabby-hands. The core gameplay here is great, but it’s sabotaged by combat controls that force a lot of different types of attack into just one button. Fans of the genre with patience for unusual control schemes may enjoy this, but everyone else may find this too frustrating to be worthwhile. |
| Wreckin’ Ball Adventure | Platformer | C+ |
tl;drWreckin’ Ball Adventure is a physics-based Platformer where you’re guiding a robotic ball through a facility, rolling, bouncing, and swinging your way through areas in search of secrets. The swinging is a blast, but the rolling and bouncing is frustrating and difficult to control, and the visuals feel monotonous. This one had potential, but dropped the… er, ball. |
| 10 Second Run Returns | Platformer | C |
tl;dr10 Second Run Returns is a simple but challenging Platformer with the premise that each level must be completed in 10 seconds. There’s nothing particularly special or interesting here beyond that premise, but I suppose some may find this to be a decent time-waster. |
| Arcade Archives Donkey Kong | Arcade / Platformer | C |
tl;drDonkey Kong is an absolute classic Arcade-style Platformer, albeit one that definitely shows its age, and most modern players won’t be eager to buy a game you can complete in five minutes. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still one of the most important videogames ever made, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying. |
| Bearnard | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG / Platformer | C |
tl;drBearnard is a side-scrolling Turn-Based Strategy-RPG with Platformer elements where players fight enemies with a bow and arrow, carefully considering their trajectory with each attack. Despite the adorable presentation, the challenge level in this game is vicious, and it’s such a nerve-wracking experience I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone other than genre fans seeking a challenge. |
| Beeny | Platformer / Arcade | C |
tl;drBeeny is an Arcade-style Platformer with a great presentation reminiscent of the classic Donkey Kong Country trilogy. However, the gameplay that has you jumping up tree branches as a round bee isn’t very noteworthy or memorable, and the game’s extremely short 15-minute length, while offset by its tiny $1 price, nevertheless results in this being a pretty unimpactful experience. |
| Belle Boomerang | Platformer | C |
tl;drBelle Boomerang is a retro-style Platformer where players take the role of the titular boomerang-tossing heroine. The presentation here is a delightful take on the Nintendo Entertainment System era, but beyond this nothing else here is particularly noteworthy. It’s fine, but unless the presentation appeals to you, there’s probably not much here for you. |
| Cosmonauta | Platformer | C |
tl;drCosmonauta is a challenging Platformer that’s pretty forgettable. If you’re someone who enjoys harder Platformers and you’re looking for something cheap and disposable, this may serve to distract you for a short while, but it’s not likely to do much more than that. |
| Dadish Collection | Compilation / Platformer | C |
tl;drDadish Collection is a Compilation of the original trilogy of Platformers, all decent but unspectacular games. Unfortunately the value this bundle adds is a bit iffy too, as you can easily snag all three games on sale for a sum total that’s less than half the cost of this package. If you’re going to get these games, do that instead. |
| Doodle Derby | Racing / Platformer | C |
tl;drDoodle Derby is a side-scrolling Racing game with a hand-drawn look that uses a track-building mechanic to make for some fun and inventive gameplay. Unfortunately, the game is really rough and suffers from a slew of problems, such as various parts of the game not working properly, overly-tough progression, and some really terrible sound. There’s a lot to love here, but the many flaws make loving this game difficult. |
| Duck Souls+ | Platformer | C |
tl;drDuck Souls is a challenging Platformer that doesn’t do anything particularly original or noteworthy, but what it does do, it does well enough. Its low asking price of $5 makes it something that genre fans may want to try, but everyone else should probably move along to something else. |
| Dunkadillo | Platformer | C |
tl;drDunkadillo is a Platformer where players control an armadillo that rolls up into a basketball and is always bouncing. This always bouncing gimmick is more frustrating than fun, and while this game has a great presentation, I think you have better options on Nintendo Switch. |
| Exception | Platformer | C |
tl;drException is a skill-based Platformer where players are jumping around on neon-infused levels that warp around as the player gets to certain points. Unfortunately, the presentation isn’t very memorable, and the otherwise good gameplay is broken by control issues. |
| Floogen | Platformer | C |
tl;drFloogen is a Platformer with a really adorable presentation that mirrors the look and sound of stop-motion animation. Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn’t elicit the same sort of joy, with sub-par platforming and poor hit detection. |
| Ginnung | Platformer | C |
tl;drGinnung is a challenging Platformer where players need to jump and air-dash to the exit as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the controls in this are far too unwieldy for a game that absolutely demands precision control, with the difficulty level spiking early. This game isn’t without its charms, but you have far too many better alternatives to bother with it. |
| Jack ‘N’ Hat | Platformer | C |
tl;drJack ‘N’ Hat is a Platformer with a protagonist who attacks enemies by throwing his hat. The presentation here is delightfully old-school, but the game itself isn’t particularly noteworthy, and even suffers from some frustrating elements, like stiff controls and tedious level design. It’s not terrible, but you have better options on the Nintendo Switch. |
| Kirby Fighters 2 | Fighting Game / Platformer / Party Game | C |
tl;drKirby Fighters 2 is a family-friendly game that combines Fighting Game, Platformer and Party Game elements much in the same way the Super Smash Bros. series does. The gameplay here is good albeit more shallow than Super Smash Bros. In fact, overall Kirby Fighters 2 doesn’t hold a candle to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in pretty much every area, and even its low $20 price tag can only do so much to make up for this game’s severe lack of variety. This is a decent game, but anyone interested in this game is much, much better off spending more to get Super Smash Bros. Ultimate |
| MagiCat | Platformer | C |
tl;drMagiCat is a Mario-style Platformer with simple graphics, decently varied gameplay, and nothing particularly noteworthy to say about it. |
| Miles & Kilo | Platformer | C |
tl;drMiles & Kilo is a Mario-style Platformer that’s oddly reminiscent of the original Adventure Island game. It’s cute, light, and aside from an occasional difficulty spike, it’s a decent but unspectacular platformer. |
| Muddledash | Platformer / Party Game | C |
tl;drMuddledash is a Platformer/Party game where 2-4 players race to be the first to reach the finish line while holding a gift they’re all squabbling over. It’s a decent idea, but multiple serious flaws really limit the fun you can have with this game. |
| Perils of Baking | Platformer | C |
tl;drPerils of Baking is a Platformer with a cute concept where your enemies are all based on confectionary treats, but that is is pretty much the only thing this game has going for it. Beyond that, this game is painfully mediocre, and there are countless other Platformers on Nintendo Switch you’re better off playing instead of this. |
| Retro Rollers Bundle | Compilation / Platformer | C |
tl;drRetro Rollers Bundle is a Compilation containing Panic Porcupine and Polyroll, two games that each try their own take on the Sonic the Hedgehog formula. Of the two, I think that only Polyroll succeeds at this, and while this bundle does offer some savings over getting the games separately, it doesn’t make much sense to buy this when only one of the games is good. |
| Rain World | Platformer | C |
tl;drRain World is a Platformer that has you playing as a cute rodent-like creature struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic landscape. The game’s beautiful presentation and unforgiving world drive home this game’s atmosphere very well, but the unreliable controls do nothing but frustrate the player and make the game’s unforgiving nature feel unfair and tedious. Only the most patient players wanting a challenge should bother with this one. |
| Smash Star | Platformer | C |
tl;drSmash Star is a Platformer where you play as a cat-man throwing a star-person to grab and throw enemies. This is a decent but not great retro-style Platformer and while it’s not bad, its biggest selling point is a price tag under $2. Beyond that, this is a fairly mediocre Platformer. |
| SpongeBob SquarePants: Bundle | Compilation / 3D Platformer | C |
tl;drSpongeBob SquarePants: Bundle is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. Both are solid 3D Platformers that fans of the SpongeBob franchise will likely enjoy, but unfortunately this bundle is simply not a good deal, and in fact you’re much better off getting the individual games when they go on sale. There’s no good reason to get this bundle instead. |
| Squeakers II | Arcade / Platformer | C |
tl;drSqueakers II, like its predecessor, is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players building up a structure to try and escape a rising water line. This sequel has a new 2-player competitive mode, more block types, and a more gradual difficulty curve, but it still suffers from the finicky block placement issue that marred the first game. |
| Super Perils of Baking | Platformer | C |
tl;drSuper Perils of Baking is a Platformer and remake of Perils of Baking, and while this remake adds adorable visuals to the cute concept of a game where your enemies are all based on confectionary treats, that is pretty much the only thing this game has going for it. Beyond that, this game is painfully mediocre, and there are countless other Platformers on Nintendo Switch you’re better off playing instead of this. |
| Super Zangyura | Platformer | C |
tl;drSuper Zangyura is a Platformer that’s clearly designed to parody the classic Castlevania games. Some elements of the game work very well – namely, the presentation and the boss design. Unfortunately, the level design here is awful, full of tedious backtracking and troll game-style traps. The end result is a game that’s frustrating about as often as it is fun. |
| Type:Rider | Platformer | C |
tl;drType:Rider is a physics-based Platformer where players control a colon (this thing –> : ) rolling through a history of the English language. The presentation here is stunning, but it falls short of being a true tour of the written word by not containing actual biographical information, and the platforming itself is woefully flawed due to the physics at its core being inconsistent and unreliable. Those fascinated by text and fonts may still find this game to be a visually-pleasing diversion, but it’s disappointing that this could have been something much greater than it is. |
| Arcade Archives Donkey Kong Jr. | Arcade / Platformer | C- |
tl;drDonkey Kong Jr. is a classic Arcade-style Platformer, albeit one that definitely shows its age, and most modern players won’t be eager to buy a game you can complete in fifteen minutes. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still a classic, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying. |
| Arcade Archives Mappy | Arcade / Platformer | C- |
tl;drMappy is an Arcade game with Platformer elements where you play as a mouse cop trying to evade criminal cats and steal back their stolen goods. The gameplay here takes some getting used to, and I ultimately think you’re better off playing the NES version in Namco Museum Archives Vol. 1, which at $20 for 11 games is a far better deal than the overpriced $8 for this one game is. |
| Arcade Archives Mario Bros. | Arcade / Platformer | C- |
tl;drMario Bros. is a classic Arcade-style Platformer where players must clear a sewer of an infestation of vermin. It’s a classic throwback game, albeit somewhat dated by today’s standards. However, the real issue here is that there are multiple versions of this game available on Nintendo Switch Online’s apps, and those other versions are all better. On top of this, the price seems too steep, making it difficult to give this game a recommendation. |
| Avenger Bird | Platformer | C- |
tl;drAvenger Bird is a Platformer where you control a bird that can’t fly and can barely jump well, with limited controls and frustrating game design. It’s not horrible, but it’s definitely not very good either. |
| Balthazar’s Dream | Platformer | C- |
tl;drBalthazar’s Dream is a Platformer with a lovely presentation that makes all sorts of clever references to the world of dogs. Unfortunately, none of that excuses the game’s 1.5GB file size, and even though the presentation is lovely, the gameplay is shoddy and simply not fun. Leave this puppy at the pound. |
| Croc’s World | Platformer | C- |
tl;drCroc’s World is a Platformer that is a lazy copycat of the original Super Mario Bros., and a poor one at that. It’s not worth your time. |
| Croc’s World 2 | Platformer | C- |
tl;drCroc’s World 2 is a Platformer that is a lazy copycat of the original Super Mario Bros., and a poor one at that. It makes a few tiny improvements over the first Croc’s World, but is still a mediocre game that isn’t worth your time. |
| Croc’s World 3 | Platformer | C- |
tl;drCroc’s World 3 is a Platformer that is a lazy copycat of the original Super Mario Bros., and a poor one at that. It makes a few tiny improvements over the first two Croc’s World games, but is still a mediocre game that isn’t worth your time. |
| Dark Burial | Platformer | C- |
tl;drDark Burial is a challenging Platformer that has players fending off enemies and navigating tricky environments using a crossbow. Unfortunately, neither platforming nor combat in this game is especially fun, and even with its low $4 price tag, it’s hard to see much reason for players to bother with this game over countless better options on Nintendo Switch. |
| Gift | Platformer | C- |
tl;drGift is a Platformer with Puzzle-Platformer elements that has players working their way through a sinking ship trying to escape. While the premise here is good, nothing the game does really delivers on it, with the poor Platforming being particularly disappointing. Skip this one. |
| Himno | Platformer | C- |
tl;drHimno is a Platformer where you’re exploring a series of dark ruins. The core gameplay and atmosphere in this game is quite good, but the game unfortunately does nothing with those elements, lacking a real challenge and very quickly becoming repetitive and boring. Despite its good qualities, Himno isn’t worth your time. |
| Job the Leprechaun | Platformer | C- |
tl;drJob the Leprechaun is a Platformer with simple graphics, uninteresting gameplay, and nothing particularly noteworthy to say about it. |
| Kentucky Robo Chicken | Platformer | C- |
tl;drKentucky Robo Chicken is a challenging Platformer that has you flapping your way through obstacle courses collecting cogs and avoiding obstacles. It’s not horrible, but it’s not very good either, and the challenge of the gameplay comes mostly from its terrible controls. Don’t bother with it. |
| Maddening Euphoria | Platformer | C- |
tl;drMaddening Euphoria is a simple Platformer with a unique presentation that’s both its best and worst quality. The game looks stylish and great, but the circular design of the game makes judging upcoming terrain difficult and creates too many blind jumps, and the colorful visuals at times makes distinguishing hazards more difficult than it needs to be. The result is a game with a lot of promise that just feels frustrating to play. |
| OkunoKA | Platformer | C- |
tl;drOkunoKA is a challenging Platformer in a colorful world. The gameplay here has a lot of similarities to Super Meat Boy, but unfortunately the controls are maddeningly bad, resulting in a game that feels like it could be fun, if it would just do what you actually tell it to when you try to control your character. |
| OkunoKA Madness | Platformer | C- |
tl;drOkunoKA Madness is a re-release of OkunoKA with more levels. Like OkunoKA, this is a challenging Platformer in a colorful world. The gameplay here has a lot of similarities to Super Meat Boy, but unfortunately the controls are maddeningly bad, resulting in a game that feels like it could be fun, if it would just do what you actually tell it to when you try to control your character. |
| PlataGo! Super Platform Game Maker | Content Creation Application / Platformer | C- |
tl;drPlataGo is a Game Design Application with a good variety of options, but it is crippled by its terrible menus, horrible controls, overall bugginess, and its core Platformer gameplay just isn’t very good. While there are some enticing features here for prospective game designers, you’re probably better off spending the extra to get Super Mario Maker 2. |
| Rafa’s World + Axolotl + .cat Milk | Compilation / Platformer | C- |
tl;drRafa’s World + Axolotl + .cat Milk is a Compilation including the three named games, all Platformers, and all pretty sub-par, with control and hit detection issues, as well as a lack of originality. However, what these games lack in quality, they make up for in value, at least in this collection, which sells for a mere $0.75. That’s an absolutely crazy discount since the cheapest of those games sells for $7 on its own. Does that low price mean that these games are any better? No. But it does mean that they’re priced here in a way that makes them more worth their asking price. Just don’t expect anything memorable or even particularly good here. |
| Rô | Platformer | C- |
tl;drRô is a Platformer that has you working your way through obstacle course-style levels while avoiding enemies that you can’t fight. This game features repetitive visuals, poor gameplay, and does nothing that’s particularly unique or original. But I suppose for only $0.50, some players may find this to be a time-waster worth the tiny price tag. |
| Splatter | Platformer | C- |
tl;drSplatter is a colorful Platformer where your movements spread paint that reveals the level and its platforms. Unfortunately, both the visuals and gameplay are very similar to another game, Ink, that simply does these things better. The lack of a jump and your limited ability to spread paint are the major culprits here, resulting in this game leaning far too heavily toward trial and error. Suffice it to say, if this game seems interesting to you, you’re better off getting Ink first. |
| Squeakers | Arcade / Platformer | C- |
tl;drSqueakers is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players building up a structure to try and escape a rising water line. Unfortunately, the finicky mechanics mean building that structure will be a frustrating process. This game has a great basic concept, but the execution is lacking. |
| Squidlit | Platformer | C- |
tl;drSquidlit is a retro-style Platformer with Game Boy-esque green monochrome visuals where players take the role of an adorable octopus creature. Even for players fond of the Game Boy look, this presentation is pretty terrible, the gameplay isn’t especially noteworthy, and the game can be completed in under an hour. Even at a price under $1, this game isn’t worth it, especially with multiple other highly-similar games available. |
| Swaps and Traps | Platformer | C- |
tl;drSwaps & Traps is a platformer that has you trying to get to the exit when sections of the screen have been switched around. It’s a good concept with terrible execution, that forces you to repeat levels after making a mistake, and keeps replaying the same annoying sound clips over and over. This game is just too frustrating to be enjoyable. |
| The Ultimate Sonic Bundle | Compilation / Platformer / 3D Platformer / Kart Racer | C- |
tl;dr
The Ultimate Sonic Bundle is a Compilation containing two great Sonic games (Sonic Mania, Team Sonic Racing) and one bad one (Sonic Forces). While these games all have their merits, this overpriced bundle does not – you can easily get everything included here and more in other bundles that will end up costing you less. Unless you get a really good sale price on this bundle, don’t bother with this rip-off. |
| Trip World DX | Platformer | C- |
tl;dr
Trip World DX is a remaster of an obscure Game Boy Platformer where players control a bunny-like creature. This release looks and sounds delightful, and has a good amount of extra content. However, the game itself has multiple gameplay issues that make for an experience that’s not nearly as fun as it looks. Unless you somehow have nostalgia for the original release, skip this game. |
| Unit 4 | Platformer | C- |
tl;drUnit 4 is a Platformer where players swap between four characters with different abilities. Unfortunately, the controls are horribly sluggish and unresponsive, and the gameplay is unforgiving, making this a recipe for frustration. |
| Barry the Bunny | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drBarry the Bunny is a Platformer about a construction worker bunny that has an inviting, cutesy exterior, and a cold, heartless interior. This game is not only unforgiving in its design, it suffers from nasty control issues that will end up killing you even more often than the challenging level design. Skip this game. |
| Borzoi Adventure | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drBorzoi Adventure is a challenging Platformer that has players jumping around levels as a dog collecting bones and then getting to an exit. While the game looks nice, the gameplay is sluggish and the level design is sadistic in a way that’s just not fun. Even for a budget game, you have many better options than this. |
| Bouncy Bob | Arcade / Platformer | D+ |
tl;drBouncy Bob is a game where players use a single button to make Bob jump around to avoid enemies. It’s a decent concept, but in practice it just isn’t very fun. |
| Bruxa | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drBruxa is a Platformer where players take the role of a young witch jumping on platforms and fighting bugs. The core gameplay here is bland and mediocre, but it’s made far worse due to unpolished game design and poor hit detection. Add to this an absurd $10 price and you have a game that’s absolutely not worth bothering with. |
| Copperbell | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drCopperbell is a Platformer that has you playing as an anthropomorphized bell. The game’s artwork is nice, but nothing else here has enough time to develop into anything more than the sub-standard and mediocre game that we’re presented with here, over in under an hour, at which point you’ll be left wondering why you spent money on this. The smart answer to that question, of course, is “I didn’t”. |
| Human Rocket Person | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drHuman Rocket Person is a Platformer with unique and difficult controls as they play a man on a pogo stick judging his angle to set up his jumps. Unfortunately, the game is far too difficult to be enjoyable, and everything about the game comes off as messy, unpolished, and amateurish. |
| Impossible Mission | Puzzle / Platformer | D+ |
tl;drImpossible Mission is a Platforming game with Puzzle elements that’s often seen as one of the classics of the Commodore 64 platform, but sadly it has not aged well, and while this release does add a few graphical enhancements and quality-of-life features, these additions do not justify the absurd $15 price tag for a 40 year-old game. Unless you’re wearing nostalgia goggles that can blind you to how poorly-aged and overpriced this game is, skip it. |
| JumpHead: Battle4Fun! | Platformer / Party Game | D+ |
tl;drJumpHead is a multiplayer-focused Platformer and Party Game where players try to score points by jumping on each others’ heads. Unfortunately, jumping in this game is inconsistent and unreliable to the point where it saps the fun out of the game. This game is broken and not worth playing. |
| Kitty Rainbow | Platformer / Arcade | D+ |
tl;drKitty Rainbow is an Arcade-style Platformer that is clearly copying the gameplay of the classic game Rainbow Islands, but it does so extremely poorly, with bad controls, some poorly-conceived gameplay elements, and a presentation that can make important gameplay elements harder to see. Even fans of Rainbow Islands probably shouldn’t bother with this. |
| Pandaty | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drPandaty is a Platformer where players double-jump through obstacle courses as a panda. The game’s retro-style pixel art presentation may be appealing, but the game itself is joyless and unoriginal. Skip this one. |
| Panic Porcupine | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drPanic Porcupine is a Platformer that’s clearly a tribute to the Sonic the Hedgehog series, albeit with sadistic level design. This high challenge level already makes the target audience for this game pretty narrow, and things get worse when you introduce scrolling problems that make the game difficult to look at. As a result, I cannot recommend this game, even to those who love Sonic and enjoy a challenge. |
| Rafa’s World | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drRafa’s World is a family-friendly Platformer where players control the titular Rafa as he jumps and punches his way through enemies and a lot of boxes. The gameplay here is seriously marred by poor hit detection. However, probably this game’s biggest problem is that its $10 price tag is too high, especially when the Rafa’s World + Axolotl + .cat Milk bundle that includes this game is only $0.75. With this being the case, absolutely no one should buy this game here, and those who think they can tolerate its flaws are better getting the bundle. |
| Save the Ninja Clan | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drSave the Ninja Clan is a Platformer where players play as a trio of ninjas racing through hazardous levels to save the people of their town. Unfortunately the ugly presentation, spotty gameplay, and frustrating control issues make this a ninja game that dishonors its ancestors. |
| Sega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World | Platformer | D+ |
tl;drSega Ages Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a great port of a terrible Platformer. The Sega Master System classic has aged incredibly poorly, and even the polish this release gives the game doesn’t change its frustrating, repetitive gameplay and atrociously bad hit detection. |
| .cat | Platformer | D |
tl;dr.cat is a Platformer with some endearing pixel art visuals and absolutely terrible platforming gameplay, with bad mechanics and shoddy level design. Do not buy it. |
| Arcade Archives Ice Climber | Platformer / Arcade | D |
tl;drWhile this game is probably best known these days for producing the pair of titular characters now featured in the Super Smash Bros. Series, this classic arcade game is stifled by the terrible horizontal movement while jumping that makes the game harder to control than it should be, and this release has an absurd $8 price tag. If you want to play this game, just play it on Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Entertainment System app. |
| Arcade Archives Vs. Balloon Fight | Arcade / Platformer | D |
tl;drThis game was clearly Nintendo’s attempt to copy the Atari classic Joust, but it has aged poorly, and this release is overpriced and lacks features found in other versions. Unless you need to own this game, just play the version on the Nintendo Switch Online app instead. |
| Axolotl | Platformer | D |
tl;drAxolotl is a challenging Platformer where players control a pink elephant, who must get to a watering hole before time runs out. This game plays much like the more popular challenging Platformer Celeste, but suffers due to poor difficulty progression and poorly-designed controls. However, probably this game’s biggest problem is that its $7 price tag is too high, especially when the Rafa’s World + Axolotl + .cat Milk bundle that includes this game is only $0.75. With this being the case, absolutely no one should buy this game here, and those who think they can tolerate its flaws are better getting the bundle. |
| BringIt to MOM | Platformer | D |
tl;drBringIt to MOM is a Platformer that has you swinging through levels as a black circle. Unfortunately, the controls are frustratingly difficult to work with and infuriatingly inconsistent. This game just isn’t fun to play. |
| Chop is Dish | Platformer | D |
tl;drChop is Dish is a Platformer that has you jumping on platforms and animals to gather up meat. It’s ugly, it’s uninspired, it’s poorly-made, and just about everything here seems like it was created by an amateur trying to copy better games without the skill to even come close to them. It’s not worth even its low asking price. |
| Crash Dummy | Platformer | D |
tl;drCrash Dummy is a Platformer where players play a Crash Test Dummy sent on a rescue mission. It’s also a terrible game with horrible controls, an ugly presentation, and all sorts of problems, and it’s not worth one tenth of its $30 price tag. Do not buy this game. |
| Hexagravity | Arcade / Platformer | D |
tl;drHexagravity is a simple Arcade-style Platformer where you’re jumping up an infinite tower of platforms. Unfortunately, movement in this game is frustrating for multiple reasons, and the way the platforms are displayed is unnecessarily confusing. This game isn’t worth even its low asking price. |
| Justin Danger | Platformer | D |
tl;drJustin Danger is a simple Platformer that’s almost like an Auto-Runner in its simplistic design. Unfortunately, the sluggish controls sap what little potential this game had as a fun distraction, and as a result, you’re better off looking elsewhere for a fun and inexpensive Platformer on Nintendo Switch. |
| Nicky – The Home Alone Golf Ball | Platformer | D |
tl;drNicky is a physics-based Platformer that has you trying to get through the game by hitting its ball-shaped protagonist much like a golf ball rather than jumping. However, the game’s presentation is horribly amateurish, and the gameplay is maddeningly frustrating at at times trollish. Skip this game. |
| Radical Rex (QUByte Classics) | Compilation / Platformer | D |
tl;dr
Radical Rex is a Compilation containing the SNES version of the Platformer Radical Rex as well as the Game Boy Platformer, Baby T-Rex (released as We’re Back: A Dinosaur’s Story in the US). Neither game is good, with the Game Boy game being especially awful. Skip these “classics”. |
| Run & Jump Guy | Platformer | D |
tl;drRun & Jump Guy is a Platformer that’s clearly copying Mario, and doing a terrible job of it. There’s no originality here, no fun gameplay, no variety, and absolutely no reason you’d want to play this over the countless Mario games already on the Nintendo Switch. Don’t waste money on this game – play one of those other games instead. |
| Run Box Run | Platformer | D |
tl;drRun Box Run is an online-only, multiplayer-focused Platformer, but it’s such a plain, boring, tedious, and feature-poor game that it’s no wonder the online lobbies are dead. The only way you’ll be able to play this game is to trick a friend into buying it to play with you. You have plenty of better games on Nintendo Switch, get one of those instead. |
| Sakura in Gameland | Platformer | D |
tl;drSakura in Gameland is a terrible Platformer with boring gameplay, terrible level design, repetitive visuals, mindless enemies, and which forces you to restart the entire mind-numbing level after taking just a few hits. Do not get this game. |
| Steal It | Platformer | D |
tl;drSteal It is a challenging Platformer that has you heading into each of the game’s single-screen levels to steal a treasure, then trying to make it back to the starting point. The gameplay here is uninventive and at times outright broken, and the presentation is bland and boring. Don’t waste your time with this game. |
| Super Jagger Bomb | Platformer / Arcade | D |
tl;drSuper Jagger Bomb is a family-friendly Arcade-style Platformer directly inspired by the Bomb Jack series, and as such it features many of that series’ problems, such as poor Platforming. Add to that an ugly, repetitive, cheap-looking presentation and you have a game that’s simply not worth playing. |
| To Leave | Platformer / Misc. | D |
tl;drTo Leave is a Platformer with a lot of… story… that’s nonsensical and drags down the pacing in a game with what was already some pretty poor gameplay. I don’t doubt that this was a very personal project to someone, and there are definitely elements of the presentation that make for an interesting spectacle, but they don’t make for a very enjoyable game. |
| Tower Climb | Platformer | D |
tl;drTower Climb is a Platformer that has you moving a dragon up a cylindrical tower. This is about as boring and uninteresting as Platformers get, with terrible graphics and nothing worthwhile to point to. |
| V.O.I.D. | Platformer | D |
tl;drV.O.I.D. is a Platformer that is absolutely loaded with problems. Shoddy gameplay, long load times, poor localization, sub-par graphics. This one isn’t worth your time. |
| Wira & Taksa: Against the Master of Gravity | Platformer | D |
tl;dr
Wira & Taksa is a Platformer with some Puzzle-Platformer elements that has players moving through dangerous levels by shifting gravity and swapping characters. Unfortunately, this game suffers from frustrating design issues that make the character-swapping feel pointlessly tedious, and that have you frequently making leaps of faith with unforgiving gameplay. And just to make things worse, the generic music and ear-piercing voices will make you want to play the entire thing on mute. You have multiple better options on Nintendo Switch for this sort of gameplay, don’t waste your time on this. |
| Commander Keen in Keen Dreams | Platformer | D- |
tl;drCommander Keen in Keen Dreams is the first console port of a Platformer released to PCs in 1991, the “lost episode” and second game in the series. However, it is an absolutely terrible platformer in multiple ways, and it has only gotten worse with time. Series fans nostalgic about the good ol’ days be warned – this is not the game you’re looking for. |
| Daily Dadish | Platformer | D- |
tl;drDaily Dadish, like the first three games in the series, is a Platformer about a dad radish on a journey to collect his errant kids. Unfortunately, this game copy-pastes the presentation of Dadish 3, and while its “one level per day” concept is intriguing, this ultimately results in a drip-feed of content that’s stifling, ruins the difficulty curve, and forces players to play the game online. Unless you are a die-hard fan of this series, this is a game to skip. In fact, even if you are a series fan, you’ll likely be disappointed with this game. |
| Pix Jungle Adventures | Platformer | D- |
tl;drPix Jungle Adventures is a Platformer that’s quite simply, a shameless Mario clone, but worse than that it’s a terrible Mario clone, with bad physics and shoddy level design. Play any Mario game and you’ll have a better time than this trash. |
| .cat Milk | Platformer | F |
tl;dr.cat Milk is a challenging Platformer where players control a cat… trying to get a saucer of milk and return it to their… er, doghouse. This game gives us completely disposable gameplay and level design, saddles it with poor controls, and then has the audacity to try to charge $10 for it. Even more bizarre, the Rafa’s World + Axolotl + .cat Milk bundle that includes this game is only $0.75. With this being the case, absolutely no one should buy this game here, and honestly even if you get that bundle I wouldn’t recommend playing this pointless, bad game. |
| Arcade Archives Pac-Land | Platformer | F |
tl;dr
Pac-Land is an absolutely abysmal Platformer whose most lasting legacy is being the basis for one of the worst stages in the Super Smash Bros. series. What’s worse, this release charging $8 for this game is an absolute rip-off when you get this game and 13 other much better games in Pac-Man Museum+. If you want this game, just get that bundle instead. |
| Growtopia | MMO / Platformer / Sandbox | F |
tl;drWARNING: THIS GAME HEAVILY PUSHES MICROTRANSACTIONS. Growtopia is a MMO Platforming Sandbox. It’s also a terrible mess, and the game puts you at the mercy of horrible other players before you’ve even made it through the full tutorial, and then demands your money to stop it, like some sort of digital protection racket. Do not download this game. |
| Robby’s Adventure | Platformer | F |
tl;drRobby’s Adventure is a challenging platformer where you control a robot escaping a factory. Even at $2, this game isn’t worth the price – it’s ugly, the controls are miserable, and the level design is repetitive. Even stripping down this thing for spare parts wouldn’t result in anything worthwhile. |
| Sector 98 | Platformer | F |
tl;drSector 98 is a Platformer that has a robot collecting remote controls and getting to an outlet. This would have been a mediocre Platformer, but it is rendered virtually unplayable by terrible, spotty, unreliable controls. Skip this one. |
| The Monty Mole Collection | Compilation / Platformer | F |
tl;dr
The Monty Mole Collection is a Compilation containing five games from the aforementioned series, and every last one of them is terrible. There are decent features and options here, but did you not see what I just wrote? All of the games here are bad. Move along. |
